Del Norte County’s 24th annual Sea Cruise car show draws roughly 400 cars a year to Beach Front Park. This year instead of a dance to close out the show on Saturday evening, entrants will have a chance to show off their machines at a sanctioned cruise of downtown Crescent City while folks sample regional micro-

like to get out. They like to show off their car. They like people to hear their car. They like to wave. So that’s what we did this year.” Sea Cruise is often called Del Norte County’s last big event before the winter sets in. Past shows have attracted as many as 10,000 people to Beach Front Park, said Crescent City-Del Norte Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeff Parmer. Car enthusiasts will bring automobiles from as far away as Nevada, Southern California, Idaho and Washington, Petersen said. Although the flow of people in and out of the chamber’s visitor center after Labor Day hasn’t slowed, Parmer says Sea Cruise provides a much-needed boost for local businesses dependent on tourism. “I know that we survey the hotels, and with the exception of maybe one or two, they’re all full for that weekend,” he said, adding that Sea Cruise is about a third as big as Crescent City’s largest single-day event, the Fourth of July celebration. “In October, that’s a significant impact on the economy and that’s why hotels and restaurants support us and that’s why they love us.” The show will feature both stock and modified cars. Folks can wander among rows of Mustangs and Camaros and climb the unofficially designated Corvette Hill. There will be trucks dating

back to the 1930s or earlier with original parts, and there will be customized hot rods. Fifty-five classes of cars will be on display Saturday at Beach Front Park, Petersen said. Many will also be parked along 3rd Street in downtown Crescent City on Friday for the event’s annual Show & Shine. “It’s just a get-together,” Petersen said. “People come in for Sea Cruise, come in all during the day on Friday. Everybody gets together between 4 and 6 downtown, people walk around and look at the cars.” New this year will be an appearance by one of the most famous motorcycles in the world, “The World’s Fastest Indian.” Burt Munro, of Invercargill, New Zealand, brought his highly modified 1920 Indian Scout streamliner to the Bonneville Salt Flats in August 1967, where he claimed the world’s land speed record at 183.586 mph. Now owned by the Hensley family of Pasadena, the Munro Special #35 Streamliner took top honors at the August 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Tom Hensley said that whenever Munro returned to New Zealand he would bring the bike’s engine back with him so he could continue modifying it. Munro would leave the bike with an Indian dealership in Southern California. Munro shaped his motor-

cycle after the barramundi fish, which is common in New Zealand. “When you actually see the bike in person you’ll see how small it is,” Hensley said. “I can’t get in it comfortably even without the body on and with the body on I couldn’t even get my feet back to the back controls. You guys will have a real treat seeing it.” Probably the biggest change at this year’s Sea Cruise will be Blues, Brews and Cruise on Saturday. Held in lieu of a dance, Blues, Brews & Cruise will feature microbrews from local and regional breweries, including Crescent City’s own Port o’ Pints, Tight Lines Brewery in Brookings as well as Eel River Brewery and Six Rivers Brewery from Humboldt County. Folks will groove to the sounds of Brad Wilson and his Rollin’ Thunder Blues Band, a rock and blues band from Visalia, and enjoy good food. Parmer said he hopes to have Lil’ Keith’s BBQ, Beach Bumz Cantina and other local vendors. There will also be a showsanctioned cruise through downtown Crescent City. The cruise will only be open to registered participants in Sea Cruise, Petersen said. In addition to cruising up and down city streets, show participants will bring their vehicles through Tsunami Plaza, where the Blues and Brews event will be held. “It’s really underutilized,”

There will be a closed sanctioned cruise in downtown Crescent City, open to any vehicle that has registered for the show. The cruise will be from 6-8 pm Saturday night. Also new this year is “Blues, Brews & Cruise!” This event is from 5-9 pm Saturday night and takes the place of the 50’s – 60’s dance that we previously held at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. Live music by Brad Wilson and the Rollin’ Blues Thunder Band will have you dancing to their hot riffs from 7-9 pm. There will be eight different local and regional beers on tap for a brew tasting. Angry Orchard Hard Cider will be available for those preferring something other than beer. Commemorative beer glasses will be sold for $12 and will include 12 ounces of one beer brand of your choice. After that, 2 oz. tastings will be $1 each. There is a limited number of these glasses which are required for tasting. Glasses will be available during registration on the corner of 3rd & J Streets 10am - 6pm on Friday, at the park pavilion in Beachfront Park 8am – 3pm on Saturday, and in the Tsunami Plaza starting at 5 pm during the Blues, Brews & Cruise on Saturday night. See the full schedule of events in this program. So please join us and rekindle old memories as you look at all the classic cars and make new ones as you enjoy the sounds of the Brad Wilson Band. Finally, an event like this doesn’t happen on its own. I would like to thank the Northern Knights Car Club, the Sea Cruise Committee chaired by Lisa McKeown, and all the numerous volunteers. In addition, let me say thank you to: Crescent City Public Works & Crescent City Police Department, including the police, sheriff and fire explorers; our two major sponsors Lucky 7 Casino and Bernie Bishop Mazda; Cornerstone Youth Group; and the Crescent City Lions Club for clean up during the event. I personally want to say a big “thank you” to all of our fantastic sponsors whom you will see advertised in this program. Please support them. Another former Miss Sea Cruise was even a cancer survivor. The proceeds will go toward a local scholarship, Corpstein said. “We are taking signups now, all the way up through the Show & Shine on Friday,” she said. Local resident and writer Dave Cormack, seen posing with the Munro Special, rediscovered an old friend, Claudia Hoard, who now owns the streamliner with her husband. bers fishing and swimming with Hoard at Liberty Hole, which was literally in their backyard.

Cormack and his wife visited Hoard and Hensley this summer during a trip to Southern California, where

Cormack saw the Munro Special in person. “I have a picture of me faking riding it, where you can see the couch in the background,” he said. “It’s shaped like a cigar. There is an aluminum body over it that is shaped for streamlining. That was to get every possible mile-an-hour out of it.” The engine that’s currently in the Munro Special was built by Munro but isn’t the one that broke speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Hensley said. After visiting the Salt Flats, Munro would bring the engine back with him to New Zealand so he could continue to modify it. He left the bike itself in Southern California. Hensley pointed out that Munro, who was born in

1899, was into recycling before it was trendy, making his pistons and rods out of Ford tractor axles. “When you actually see the bike in person you’ll see how small it is,” Hensley said. “I can’t get in it comfortably even without the body on, and with the body on I couldn’t even get my feet back to the back controls. You guys will have a real treat seeing it.” The Munro Special is part of Dean Hensley’s Indian motorcycle collection. Since Dean Hensley’s death in 1992, the Hensley Family of Pasadena has preserved his motorcycle collection and has been sharing its history with others. said the film’s creators used a replica bike in place of the Munro Special. Dave Cormack, a local resident who has written several articles for classic car magazines, said he was browsing through Facebook in December 2014 when he stumbled upon a photo of Claudia Hoard, an old friend of his, with the World’s Fastest Indian. “I contacted her and I said, ‘Hey, what are you doing on the Burt Munro special?’” Cormack recalled. “She goes, ‘My husband and I own it.’ I hadn’t talked to her in 35 years.” Hoard and Cormack were part of the same circle of friends who lived on North Bank Road during the late 1970s. Hensley said the appearance at Sea Cruise will be the first since then. “That speaks for itself right there,” he said of the accolades the Munro Special won at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. “There are no replicas, fraudulent stuff. They do have the test chassis in New Zealand and parts of the record-running motor. We own the real thing; the most famous motorcycle in the world.” The story of Munro’s efforts to get to the Bonneville Salt Flats was made into a movie in 2005 starring Sir Anthony Hopkins. Hensley

urt Munro was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, in 1899. He began riding and racing motorcycles at the age of 15. The first bike Burt ever owned was an English-built Clyno. After selling that motorcycle in 1920 to a blacksmith, Burt bought his Indian Scout, which would later become the celebrated “World’s Fastest Indian.” In the 1920s, Burt began racing his Indian Scout in various forms of motorcycle racing in Australia. He even participated in an “Economy Run” where Burt managed to get 116 miles on one gallon of gas.

In the mid-1940s, Burt and his wife divorced. He wanted to build a home with a low ceiling to help with the New Zealand summer heat, but it was against the Invercargill building codes, so Burt got

around the codes by building a garage with a low roofline, which became his workshop, and also his living quarters. Burt quit working in the late See Indian / 9

1940s so he could devote all of his time to making his Indian Scout even faster. Because there were very few speed parts made for the Indian at that time, and the difficulty of obtaining what was available in New Zealand, Burt began to manufacture parts in his workshop. For example, he needed some connecting rods, and since none were available, he made his own out of an old Ford front axle. He converted his Indian to overhead valves from the original side-valve configuration. Burt had been racing his Indian since the 1940s and

set the New Zealand Open Road speed record at 120.8 miles per hour, a record that stood for 12 years. By the late 1950s, Burt’s Indian was so fast the he ran out of room on the New Zealand tracks. In 1957, he saw the Bonneville Salt Flats, and that was the impetus to get his Indian to America and run it on the vast, unlimited stretch of salt. Burt used his savings and additional money from his motorcycle friends to book passage on a cargo ship for him and his bike, working as the ship’s cook to pay for passage. Once in the United States, Burt bought an aging Nash Station Wagon for $90 dollars and used that and a Burt-Built trailer to haul his bike to Bonnev-

Upon arriving at the Bonneville Salt Flats, he was informed that because he hadn’t pre-registered, he wasn’t going to be able to run his Indian. After well-

an 850cc motorcycle, Burt shocked the racing community by running 178.97 miles per hour, a world record in that class. Burt continued to race that motorcycle until 1967, when the Southern California Timing Association, nervous about the build quality of the Indian and also the speeds it was attaining, changed the rules so that Burt could no longer race the bike legally. In 1967, Burt suffered a top-speed crash. He later said, “At the Salt in 1967, we were going like a bomb. Then, she got the wobbles over halfway through the run. To slow her down I sat up. By 1975, Burt’s failing health cost him his competition license. Doctors had said that Burt’s lifetime of crashes had taken its toll on his heart. In January of 1978, after Burt had returned from his daily walk, his heart did finally give out. The bike went through quite a few owners after Burt’s passing. He had always, every year, taken the engine back to New Zealand where he could experiment with it and install it in another Indian he acquired for just such a purpose while leaving

the actual race bike at various Indian Motorcycle dealerships throughout Southern California. From the early 1960s until 1981, the bike was maintained and stored by the Pierce family, who owned a chain of Indian Motorcycle stores in the Los Angeles area. In the early 1970s. Sammy Pierce purchased the Indian from Burt, after his racing days were over. In approximately 1981, Gordy Clark purchased the bike from Sammy, with Doug Clark taking actual possession of the bike, and stored it in Santa Paula, and then later, at Doug’s home in Santa Barbara. In 1984–1985, Dean Hensley, of Pasadena, pur-

chased it from Doug Clark. Over the next few years, a meticulous, time-consuming restoration was performed, the work overseen by Dean and completed by Steve Huntzinger. The lettering was done by Dean himself and Scott Bennett, and it was completed by 1987. In May of 1992, Dean unexpectedly passed away. The Hensley family of Pasadena has maintained the Streamliner since Dean’s passing and has made every effort to preserve the legacy of Dean Hensley and Burt Munro. Special thanks to Tom Hensley and Claudia Hoard for taking the time to bring the World’s Fastest Indian to Sea Cruise 2015.

But last year’s Best in Show winner didn’t sport a flashy paint job or blindingly bright chrome rims. Instead one needed to look closer to appreciate the subtle grain of the quilted maple Stan Hogberg used for his 1937 Ford woody station wagon. “We built it from scratch,” said Hogberg, who spent six years with his son Erik reconstructing the vintage car. “We had no templates or anything; we just took dimensions from other cars and pictures.” The quilted maple Hogberg chose in lieu of the

rock maple more commonly found on vintage woodies came from Joseph, Oregon, and is primarily used for violins and guitars. Early station wagons were used as commercial vehicles to show off produce and, on the East Coast, to convey clients to hunting and fishing lodges, Hogberg said. In the 1950s, wood-paneled station wagons became popular during the Southern California surf scene, Hogberg said. Hogberg said he wanted a challenge when he set out to build his station wagon, but

he also has an affinity for the year 1937 itself. Other cars he has worked on in the past include a 1937 Ford sedan. Hogberg and his son are currently reconstructing a 1937 pickup and will be working on a 1937 convertible. “They used to be considered the ugly duckling,” he said of cars from 1937. “There’s not very many. The coups, the sedans, all of them.” Hogberg has been tinkering with and rebuilding classic cars for much of his life, starting with a Model A Ford See Best / 15

before moving on to hot rods. When he moved to Del Norte County in 1990, he said he went back to Model As, sedans and other “slower” cars. Constructing his award-winning station wagon came with its own set of challenges. Hogberg had never before built a cowl —the front part of a car that supports the hood’s rear, windshield, dashboard, pedals and instrument panel. And he said it took him nearly three months to construct one door. Hogberg said he used two different kinds of woods, poplar wood and a man-made medium density fiberboard, before moving on to quilted maple.

cial cruise followed the Show & Shine event on Friday, but the cars that participated weren’t associated with the car show, Petersen said. Most Sea Cruise participants also weren’t going to the dance, so the Northern Knights surveyed Sea Cruise participants asking them how they would feel about a cruise instead of a dance, Petersen said. Saturday’s show-sanctioned cruise will only be open to registered participants in Sea Cruise. Jeff Parmer, executive director of the Crescent CityDel Norte County Chamber of Commerce, which co-

Show and Shine, held downtown annually on Sea Cruise Friday, offers a sneak preview of Saturday’s main event.

sponsors Sea Cruise with the Northern Knights, said he initially balked at the idea of a cruise. “I was dead set against it because of not seeing any revenue potential. People aren’t going to pay to watch cars cruise around,” he said, adding that even though the dance wasn’t hugely popular it was still profitable. “That’s when I started thinking about what we can do. That’s when I came up with the Blues and Brews idea.” To sell Parmer on the cruise, Petersen took him to Kool April Nites, a car show in Redding that attracted nearly 1,900 vehicles this year and included a sanctioned, closed, cruise. “It’s four-lanes wide going

SEA CRUISE 2015 in one direction,” Petersen said of Redding’s cruise. “It’s a big cruise. It was bumper to bumper in areas.” Parmer and Petersen also visited car cruises in Medford and Grants Pass where they studied the logistics of a sanctioned cruise, including how the streets are blocked off. “I think the important thing to him was the fact that there were so many people coming out and watching the cruise,” Petersen said. “He was surprised at how early they were going to the cruise route with their chairs and stuff. Over there in Redding people were setting up at 8 in the morning to watch a cruise that started at 6, but they were doing that in Grants Pass too.” As soon as he settled on Blues,

Brews & Cruise as an event, Parmer said his goal was to recruit 10 different microbreweries to promote their libations. The microbreweries that have agreed to participate include Tight Lines Brewery, of Brookings; Ninkasi Brewing, of Eugene, Oregon; Anderson Valley Brewing Company, of Booneville, and North Coast Brewing Company, of Fort Bragg. Eel River and Six Rivers breweries from Humboldt County will be there as will Crescent City’s own Port o’ Pints Brewery. “And then just for the fun of it we’re just going to throw in some Angry Orchard cider for those who don’t want to drink beer,” Parmer said. “It’s not really a microbrew, but it’s a nice alternative.”

Crescent City’s Port O’ Pints is one of 8 microbreweries that will be serving suds at Blues, Brews & Cruise.

Wilson also has been featured in several movies and on TV, including most recently on ‘The Young and the Restless.’ Most of the songs at the Blues, Brews & Cruise event will be from Wilson’s last two albums. “When the band starts to loosen up and have fun we start playing sing-along songs and have fun with the audience,” he said. “We’ve been known to do ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’ by Van Morrison. We’ll do some very well known songs toward the end of the night.” Blues, Brews & Cruise will be held 5–9 p.m. in the plaza by the Tsunami Memorial Fountain. One of the songs from his newest album, Blues Thunder, has been No. 1 on Europe’s Hit Tracks Top 100s and has recently debuted on America’s
