By John Crook “One of the great thrills of the show is that we have Jonathan Ames as our executive producer, show runner and principal writer, because he is such a smart guy and such an original thinker,” Stewart says. “Even in the little scenes, the ones that aren’t a major part of the story, he writes with such originality that all of us who get to say his lines are thrilled.”
Anyone who has seen Patrick Stewart in his guest appearances on “Frasier” or the Ricky Gervais sitcom “Extras” knows that the actor can be very funny, but at 75, Stewart is far better known for his iconic dramatic roles on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and in TV adaptations of “Macbeth,” “The Lion in Winter,” “Moby Dick” and many others.
While sophisticated, character-driven comedy is a hallmark of “Blunt Talk,” Ames also is more than willing to give his leading man an occasional chance to shine in more physical comedy, as in a screamingly funny scene set in an airport restroom, where an increasingly frantic Walter, running late for a flight, runs sadly afoul of the auto-flush function on one of the fixtures.
That may start to change with the Saturday, Aug. 22 premiere of the new Starz comedy series “Blunt Talk,” which casts Stewart as Walter Blunt, a passionate, opinionated and deeply neurotic British TV newscaster and pundit currently working in Los Angeles on the titular TV program. Playing a comedy series lead is a new experience for Stewart, but it’s one that he relishes. “We are having a blast,” he says. “One of my primary recollections from this past January, February, March and April were laughing, and not just laughing at stupid things we were doing, but finding the scenes themselves funny, and very interesting as well.” It was his friend Seth MacFarlane, for whom Stewart has done extensive voice work on the animated comedies “Family Guy” and “American Dad,” who first approached Stewart two years ago about starring in a live-action comedy series, but Jonathan Ames, creator of the underappreciated HBO sitcom “Bored to Death”, came up with the series premise, after catching British talking head Piers Morgan on CNN.
If Ames created the show’s concept, it was Stewart himself who came up with his character’s name. “Walter Blunt (in ‘Henry IV: Part One’) was the first speaking role that I ever played with the Royal Shakespeare Company back in 1966,” Stewart explains. “It meant that I had arrived at the place and the organization in my career that I had wanted to be for a long, long time. “When I came to Hollywood in 1987, my reputation became much more widely known, and I needed a pseudonym for checking into hotels. So I chose the name Walter Blunt and have been using that for many years. Now I have to come up with another name!”

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A
NicoleGale Anderson of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Thursday on The CW
For a while when you were doing “Beauty and the Beast,” you also were a regular on the nowfinished “Ravenswood.” How was that period for you? The characters were completely different. Miranda on “Ravenswood” was more of a dark and emotionally challenging role for me, whereas with Heather (on “Beauty and the Beast”), I get to be that bright and bubbly and fun person who just comes in and makes people laugh. I really do enjoy both sides of acting, but just because I started on the Disney Channel, comedy is my favorite. And I get to do both on “Beauty and the Beast.” I’ve found a really great balance, so it’s a lot of fun for me. Are you glad to be full-time on “Beauty and the Beast” for the first time this season? It really was interesting how one chapter came to a close and another door opened. It was sad that “Ravenswood” only ran for 10 episodes, but when “Beauty and the Beast” called me back to introduce me as more of a permanent resident in their family, I was really excited. I truly do enjoy the cast; everyone is so great and so much fun to work with. While you’re an Indiana native, you live in Toronto now. How do you like it there? I love Toronto! I love this city so much. Everyone here is so nice, and there’s so much to do – especially over the summer. I find myself in a pickle every single weekend, because I want to go and do three things at once. You just have to be OK with the one you’d the least bummed about missing out on. The winters have been hard, for sure, but I’m really happy to be here.

MichaelSymon on Food Network Has filming “Burgers, Brew & ‘Que” been fun to do? It actually was a blast, yeah. I had a lot of fun doing it. Like I tell everybody, these are my three favorite food groups so I get to travel around the country and eat them. That’s not a bad gig. What is your idea of the perfect burger? My ideal burger, it’s all about the burger to bun ratio. You know, I think that needs to be in sync. For me, a burger that’s about six ounces in size is probably about the perfect size. It has to have minimally 20 percent fat in the grind, preferably 25. And naturally, properly raised meat. So you’re not a fan of the 93-percent burger meat? No, that’s not a burger. I don’t know what that is (laughs). You need the fat. As the burger cooks, the fat melts away and bastes the meat. And about 80 percent of the taste in ground beef comes from the fat. You know, when it’s just straight beef, there’s absolutely no flavor. In checking out the craft beers in the cities you visited, what did you find? We’ve always tried to go local on the craft brews. We went to some great local breweries. Like in Cleveland, for instance, we went to Great Lakes Brewery, which is arguably the best microbrewery in the country. ... One of the ones we tried there was the one that really made them famous called the Dortmunder. It’s won like I think 15 gold medals in the brewing Olympics, so it’s like their signature beer. It’s in the lager style, you know has good floral to it, a little bit of hops, not a super giant alcohol content, like a middle-of-the-road alcohol content. But just a really good sipping beer and a good beer to put your elbows on the table and have a couple of them.

Barberie of ‘Funny or Die: America’s Next Weatherman’ Saturday on TBS You’re teamed in judging “Funny or Die: America’s Next Weatherman” with another veteran of local Los Angeles forecasting, Johnny Mountain. How well do the two of you mesh? Ironically, I had never met him before. He’s been here working in L.A. for 30 years and I’ve been here 25, and we’d never met. It’s been so much fun to get to know him and his personality. And the third judge slot is rotating, so each week, we have different people. It could be a stylist – and we didn’t have them when I was working (in TV weather), but it helps the contestants get their look and image, and curate how they want to be presented on the air. And we also have weathercasters from different markets come in, and it works out really well. How is it to work for executive producer Mark Burnett? I’m absolutely thrilled, of course, because the shows he’s done have been huge. I’m a huge fan of “The Voice,” though I don’t really watch “Survivor.” When this came up, I met with the people at Funny or Die, and we just clicked. Having been a professional weathercaster, how do you view the competition’s bemused take on the job? I feel like it’s not something I want to be doing again, but something like this is a great opportunity for me to have fun. The weather thing certainly launched a ton of opportunities for me, from sitcoms to commercials to dating shows. Local weather launched a whole career for me, and I’m so grateful for it ... but it’s time for the next chapter.

When did you get into cooking with fire? “I’ve always loved fire. I was obsessed with fire as a kid. I wouldn’t promote that for my own kids, of course, but I could sit for hours just looking at the fire, playing with it in the safest way possible.” Do you favor cooking over fire because of the flavor? “Partly, yes, but there is socially a difference when people are gathered around a fire. The conversation is different and the length of time that you sit around together is different. When you’re outside cooking at a barbecue, you have to tend to the fire and the flame.” What side dishes do you favor? “I almost never really cook the same thing twice. One day I might cook, like, sautéed dandelion greens on a skillet over a fire. Another day I might just do fingerling potatoes with olive oil and a spice mix.”

Any favorite cookbook authors? “Ted Reader, who writes many of the ‘Cooking for Dummies’ books, is a vault of information on barbecue. And Chef Ben Ford, the son of Harrison Ford, has a great book called ‘Taming the Feast.’ ”
‘Man Fire Food’ finds great barbecue on both sides of Mason-Dixon Line
Across North America, summertime is a season for cookouts, and for many families, that includes barbecue. Roger Mooking, host of Cooking Channel’s “Man Fire Food,” goes looking for lip-smacking ribs in two very different regions of the United States in an episode called “Rib-ALicious,” premiering Tuesday, Aug. 18. First, Mooking ventures into the Deep South of Hattiesburg, Miss., for a visit to Leatha’s Bar-B-Que, where thirdgeneration pit master Brian Jackson serves up Southernstyle pork ribs, continuing the legacy of his grandmother, after whom the popular restaurant is named. “They’re not doing competition barbecue, where with the ribs you want to see your teethmarks left in the rib and it’s lightly sauced with a lot of texture in the meat,” Mooking explains. “These ribs at Leatha’s just fall off the bone. The bone slides out clean as a whistle and the sauce honestly is one of the best I’ve ever had. People from all over that region – no matter their age, race or religion – come down to eat this food.”
Leatha’s also cooks its ribs in a vertical smoker standing about 15 feet tall, hanging the ribs near the top, over two lower trays of meat. “As the ribs rendered and cooked, they would drip down and fall onto the other meats on the racks below it, so it was basting the meats down below,” Mooking says. The episode also includes a stop at New York’s Hometown Bar-Q-Que, where Brooklyn native Billy Durney gives his ribs an ethnic spin. “(Billy) came from the personal security industry but he just fell in love with barbecue,” Mooking says. “I wouldn’t say it’s authentically Korean or Jamaican, but he’s honoring the mishmash of cultures in his community in the barbecue they serve. They also have classic Texas brisket and classic Southern ribs.”

Lifetime reopens
‘Full House’
in behind-the-scenes movie By Jay Bobbin
It‘s challenging enough to be convincing as an actor. Try being convincing as an actor playing a well-known actor. The task is faced by any star of a behind-the-scenes dramatization of the making of a movie or a television series, and it’s now faced by the entire cast of Lifetime’s “The Unauthorized Full House Story,” debuting Saturday, Aug. 22. Tracing the production of the popular 1987-95 ABC sitcom about a widower whose pals help him raise his daughters, the film precedes the forthcoming Netflix sequel series “Fuller House,” which will reunite many of the original cast members. Justin Gaston portrays John Stamos, who was “Uncle” Jesse Katsopolis on the original show, and he says the job was “tough, especially with such a beloved actor and beloved character. It can be nerve-racking, but I grew up loving the show and loving Uncle Jesse, so it was a pleasure to be able to play the character. I’ve probably seen every single episode.” Stamos is prominent again for Fox’s fall series “Grandfathered,” and Gaston met him once. “I ran into him at the Gibson Showroom (in Beverly Hills, Calif.) probably five or six years ago, and we talked for a minute. I got to see him play the drums (Stamos famously has toured with the Beach Boys), and it was pretty cool.” Gaston also has been mistaken for Stamos, especially during “a year or two when I only wore white T-shirts. All my friends would just call me ‘John Stamos.’ ” Among others in “The Unauthorized Full House Story” cast: Garrett Brawith as Bob Saget; Justin Mader as Dave Coulier; and Stephanie Bennett as Lori Loughlin. And in the case of the show’s Tanner children, each is represented by multiple actresses in younger and older
years: Shelby Armstrong and Brittney Wilson as Candace Cameron; Dakota Guppy and Jordyn Olson as Jodie Sweetin; and no less than three sets of look-alikes as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen ... Blaise and Kinslea Todd, Calla and Tyla Jones, and Kylie and Jordan Armstrong. Luckily for the actors impersonating them, the “Full House” cast members had mostly genial connections. “From everything I researched, and even seeing them now, it seems like they still have a great relationship,” says Gaston, who’s looking forward to the “Fuller House” update. “I’m excited to see that as well.” Married to Melissa Ordway of CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” Gaston has had a varied career. A “Nashville Star” contestant, he spent several months on NBC’s “Days of Our Lives,” co-starred in the online reality show “If I Can Dream” (with “Chicago Fire’s” Kara Killmer, among others), appeared in the pilot for Fox’s “Glee” and played Taylor Swift’s romantic interest in the music video for her hit “Love Story.” “I’ve been out here in L.A. for a while, going at it,” reflects Gaston, who also has some fame as an ex-boyfriend of Miley Cyrus. “It’s coming up on nine years here.” After a similar movie about “Saved by the Bell” last year, Lifetime has “Unauthorized” re-creations of the making of “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Melrose Place” slated for October. In the case of “Full House,” Gaston knows he and his co-stars are working against the fact that “people hold it so close. You grew up seeing it and seeing those characters, and you have such a good idea of what it is. I was one of those people myself, so you just do your best to honor and respect it.”

Alan Arkin
is among the summer’s stars on TCM By Jay Bobbin Relatively few actors get to experience their own “Summer Under the Stars” tribute day, and this year, Alan Arkin is pleased to be one of them. The Oscar winner for “Little Miss Sunshine” will be saluted by Turner Classic Movies during its annual August festival with a full day of his films Friday, Aug. 21 ... encompassing comedy (“The In-Laws”), drama (“The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter”) and suspense (“Wait Until Dark”), as well as one of Arkin’s ventures behind the scenes as a director (“Little Murders”). “It’s a shock, and it’s delightful,” the pleasant Arkin says of being a “Summer Under the Stars” honoree. “It gives me a chance to see some things I haven’t seen, or even thought about, in a long time.” The 1967 screen version of “Wait Until Dark,” in which Arkin plays a menacing criminal tormenting a blind woman (Audrey Hepburn) in her home, is a frequent TCM attraction. It remains an atypical role for Arkin, who reflects, ”I feel good about the work I did in it, in retrospect, but I had a difficult time doing it. I was so enamored of Audrey, and so in awe of her, I hated being – or even pretending to be – cruel to her. “One of the things that has excited me about it is to find out that Stephen King is a big fan of what I did with the character,” Arkin adds. “He feels that’s one of his favorite heavies, so I’m gratified by that. I’m glad I didn’t do a lot of other heavies, though. It’s not an arena I’m particularly fond of doing.” Arkin made an appearance in 1971’s “Little Murders,” but he largely focused on directing others including Elliott Gould, Donald Sutherland and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) in it. “It didn’t do well at the box office, but I’m very proud of that film,” he says.
Pictured: Alan Arkin The father of fellow actor-director Adam (“Fargo,” “Chicago Hope”) and actors Matthew and Anthony, Arkin – also a successful author of children’s stories who spent time on PBS’ “Sesame Street” very early in its run – earned an Oscar nomination for his first starring role in “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming” (1966). He’s had a solid relationship with TCM for some time, and he was interviewed by channel staple Robert Osborne for a “Live From the Classic Film Festival” special that will be shown again during his tribute day. “Popi,” “Freebie and the Bean,” “Hearts of the West” and “Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins” are among the other titles on TCM’s “Summer Under the Stars” roster of Arkin’s works. “I’ve got to admit, I don’t spend a lot of time examining my career or the arc of it,” he notes. “That much self-focus, I get self-conscious about.” Indeed, Arkin chooses to look forward instead. Following recent roles that included another Oscar-nominated turn in the Ben Affleck-directed “Argo,” he has the holiday tale “Love the Coopers” and a remake of the seniorcitizen heist comedy “Going in Style” with Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine coming up. “It’s kind of insane,” Arkin muses of the continuing pace of his half-century screen career. “If anybody had told me 50 years ago that my most successful years would be from (age) 75 on, I’d have told them they were crazy. But it seems to be what’s happening.”

HBO’s ‘Show Me a Hero’ recalls a heated desegregation case
Pictured: Oscar Isaac
By George Dickie A brown sedan pulls into a cemetery and parks. Its driver, a handsome young man in obvious distress, opens the glove box, pulls out a bottle of Maalox and takes a swig. After losing his lunch, he walks off into the distance, sits down by a grave and begins talking to its occupant, his father.
created the story from a book of the same name by Lisa Belkin, “in that whatever the American pathology is with race and class, it’s the same now as it was 25 years ago. ... I don’t want to suggest there hasn’t been some progress but that there’s still an awful lot of struggle left.”
That man portrayed in the opening scene of the six-part HBO miniseries “Show Me a Hero,” premiering Sunday, Aug. 16, is Nick Wasicsko, the former mayor of Yonkers, N.Y., who committed suicide in 1993, after his political career went into ruin following a particularly vitriolic desegregation case in his city.
The series was filmed in Yonkers, where Simon and his crew met with many of the people portrayed. Many, he says, were eager to participate but some would just as soon forget this sad episode in the city’s history.
Wasicsko, as played by Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis”), was at 28 the youngest mayor in Yonkers’ history, and he found himself in the middle of a firestorm in 1987 when a federal judge ordered the city to build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town. He had campaigned on resisting the order but changed his position after taking office when he was advised that the case was hopeless. Many of those who voted for him felt betrayed. Others in the cast include Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, LaTanya Richardson-Jackson, Bob Balaban and Jim Belushi. “The subject matter is kind of timeless, sadly,” says Emmywinning producer David Simon (“Treme,” “The Wire”), who
“We were touching on a lot of unhappy memories there,” Simons says. “It’s not easy because not everybody had their finest moments all the time. As in real life, there were moments that people wished weren’t in the film. And it’s necessary to give the context but it can’t be easy but that’s always the tradeoff when you’re going to speak to the real. But there’s power in the real, in a story that isn’t made up. “These things really happened,” he continues. “This was the fight. This was the cost. This was the benefit, and it’s allegorical for the question that remains for the rest of the country, which is, are there going to be two Americas? Or do we have some sense that we’re all part of the same shared future? That’s a question that’s being argued aggressively in every election cycle ... .”

By Dan Ladd There was a time when professional golf’s biggest rivalry was Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. While the media focuses on Woods and whether he can ever overcome the likes of Jordan Spieth and Rory McIroy, Phil Mickelson continues to go about his business. He’ll be doing just that at the 2015 PGA Championship which wraps up Sunday, August 16, on CBS. The tournament is taking place at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin where it was also held in 2004, and 2010. While Mickelson is certainly not among top-ranked golfers as he once was, the lefty is always a force to be reckoned with. No stranger to the pressure of playing in Majors, you never know when he’s going to contend as he did last month at the Open Championship in Scotland. He was within two shots of the lead late in the final round before sending a 17th hole drive out of bounds to a hotel balcony at the Old Course at St Andrews. He finished tied for second at the Masters in April but was a non factor at the U.S. Open in June. In 2014, he finished second behind McIlroy at the PGA Championship. At Whistling Straits he finished tied for second in 2004, and also tied for 12th in 2010. His most recent Major win was The Open Championship in 2013.
PhilMickelson
Mickelson has shown that when his game is on he’s as good as anyone. Quite often, he shines in Majors.

MOVIES JAY BOBBIN's Theatrical movie review
review
‘Ant-Man’ supplies Marvel-ous movie escapism nt-Man” is a marvel, in more ways than one. In recent years, so many movie adventures have sprung from the pages of Marvel Comics, it’s getting harder to fight off a “been there, seen that” feel even while the special effects remain expectedly impressive. Leave it to one of the franchise’s smallest hero to supply some of its biggest surprises of recent times. With a good dose of knowing humor that goes a very long way, “Ant-Man” supplies the tiny-character-in-a-big-world element that it must, but it does so with a spirit that’s hard to resist. That’s thanks partially to the direction by Peyton Reed (“Bring It On”), partially to the script that includes the ever-subversive Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead”) and Adam McKay (“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”) – and star Paul Rudd – among the writers, and partially to actor Rudd and the well-chosen cast around him. Just as it was a kick to see Robert Redford in a Marvel movie (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), so it is with Michael Douglas as a scientist who develops a particle that can shrink objects. You know what’s coming, but the ex-con played by Rudd has a rival for the process, the villain and former Douglas colleague played by Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”).

The world isn’t really in peril in “Ant-Man,” and that’s another refreshing twist. It’s more the story of how Rudd’s character operates among the people in his world – sometimes at a much smaller scale in his case – and they also include his ex-wife (Judy Greer), some of his prison pals (one played by Michael Pena, in what clearly is the movie’s most winning performance) and the scientist’s daughter (“Lost” alum Evangeline Lilly). The effects team has lots of fun with the visual trickery in “Ant-Man,” and as much as features such as “The Incredible Shrinking Man” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” have kept that idea alive in movies over time, the game gets upped here by switching often between the hero’s perspective and that of normal-sized people. And frequently, there’s real wit attached. At a time when the Marvel-superhero genre needed a fresh breath in theaters, “Ant-Man” comes through. The very little guy furnishes very big entertainment.
