David Duchovny finds mystery in the age of ‘Aquarius’

By Jay Bobbin

David Duchovny

Before he opens “The X-Files” again, David Duchovny will spend the summer tackling a reality-based mystery. Returning to series drama after his seven-season run on Showtime’s seriocomic “Californication,” the actor also is an executive producer of NBC’s late-1960s-set “Aquarius,” which has a two-hour premiere Thursday, May 28. He plays a World War II veteran and Los Angeles homicide detective struggling to cope with the rapidly changing times as he seeks an ex-girlfriend’s missing daughter (Emma Dumont), helped by an undercover peer (Grey Damon, “Twisted”) whose look fits the era’s youth culture. Eventually, their paths cross that of someone headed for infamy: Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony, “Game of Thrones”). “What was interesting to me was less the actual period and more what the world was like when my character, Sam Hodiak, grew up,” Duchovny says. “Like my father, he would have been born in the ‘20s, and he came of age in the ‘30s and early ‘40s. That’s a very different person from somebody who came of age in the ‘60s or, like me, in the ‘70s ... and to bring that guy into the ‘60s, with the hippies and the black power movement and all that, what did it look like to him?” Though “Aquarius” surely evokes a certain era, Duchovny likes the timeless quality of his new alter ego: “We looked at ‘Point Blank’ and some of the movies we liked from the ‘70s, and that was the kind of guy I was

drawn to and talked about with John McNamara (the show’s creator and another of its executive producers), to make him that kind of cool character.” Expectedly, “Aquarius” is packed with references to its period, from Hodiak’s car to the tunes on the soundtrack, which include Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and the Monkees’ “Daydream Believer.” Duchovny notes, “You run out of your budget pretty quickly going for those songs, because (the rights are) so expensive, then it’s really finding the hidden gems that manage to transport you to that time even if you don’t know them. That’s when the real digging occurs. We’re not a cheap show, but the sky wasn’t the limit.” The vintage vehicles also had their limitations, since Duchovny reports the one he was assigned “had no air conditioning, and the brakes were not good. We were shooting in L.A. last summer and at one point, I said, ‘OK. I guess my guy sweats.’ I just made the decision that he sweats a lot, because there was nothing else to be done. The weird thing is that all the cars that exist from that time are really nice now, and not everybody had a ‘cherry’ vehicle.” In a rare broadcast-network move, on the same night “Aquarius” has its on-air premiere, NBC will make the entire series available on its website and on on-demand platforms for a four-week period. For Duchovny, the show is something of a prelude to his much-anticipated reunion with Gillian Anderson and creator-producer Chris Carter on Fox’s continuation of “The X-Files,” being planned for a six-episode run starting in January. “I like to work, and this year has been interesting,” Duchovny confirms. “The schedule with ‘Californication’ was good because it gave me a lot of free time, not only for family stuff but to think about what else I wanted to do; I had time to write fiction and to look into music as well. It seems like I’m busy right now, but it’s more like I was busy a year ago.”

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

Kellan Lutz

of ‘Bullseye’ on Fox If some people are surprised by your move into hosting a competition series such as “Bullseye” (premiering Wednesday, May 27) after starring in such movies as the “Twilight” series and “Hercules,” what’s your feeling about that? In our industry nowadays, there’s no “right way” or “wrong way,” you just do it your way. People are going from movies to TV, from movies to hosting shows like I am, from blockbusters to indies ... the doors are open, and it’s just really nice to do what feels right. I’m very happy and very blessed. With your strong worldwide identity as Emmett Cullen in “Twilight,” has that prompted any funny moments with contestants on the “Bullseye” set? Yeah. Oh, yeah! The producers warn me when the contestants are fans, and there have been a couple of girls – and one guy – who have kind of jumped on me and wrapped their legs and arms around me, and they’re like, “I’m good. I don’t care about the money. I got what I came for.” It just warms my heart. It really is endearing to chat with these fans and have this personal time with them and take photos with them and sign autographs. “Twilight” will always be near and dear to my heart; that helped me get to where I’m at and I’ll always be grateful, so it’s just really special to see fans on the show who are still fans. We had a guy named Steve who said, “Kellan, I’m the black Hercules! I can be your stunt double!” I love it that he saw my movie, because I love to play roles that mean something to me. And now, it’s just great to interact with people.

C

Richard Quest

of ‘500 Questions’ on ABC

While “500 Questions” relies on the contestants’ knowledge, might your home network – CNN – have had more of a problem with your hosting it if it was a game show of a different nature? There is no question this would have been turned down by CNN if I’d had to wear a funny hat, have a skateboarding dog and sing “Waltzing Matilda.” It was the credibility of what I was doing, and the way I was doing it, that allowed this to go forward. As part of the opening, we say, “No helps, no saves, no multiple choices.” There’s a finite number of questions, and they are hard. And as you watch the contestants, you see them visibly wilt in front of you as they go through it. They’re on Question No. 20 that they’ve answered successfully, and I just look at them and say, “Very well done! You do realize that you’ve answered only four percent of the questions you’ve got to answer?” That is where you start to seem them go, “What have I gotten myself into?” What’s the impact of doing “500 Questions” on your regular schedule, including your weekday CNN International program “Quest Means Business”? You always know when something’s right, because you don’t have to work that hard to make it happen. As pure luck had it, I was going to take a few days off anyway, so this fit in rather well. Because this is an event that’s very tightly broadcast over nine nights, it’s not as if it rolls on and on, which would have impacted “Quest Means Business.” We get it done, then it’s “back on the road.”

CELEBRITY John Crook’s Q&A

Haylie Duff

of ‘The Real Girl’s Kitchen’ on Cooking Channel How do you describe the “Real Girl” of your show title? I get that question a lot, and there’s not an easy answer, except that in my mind the “Real Girl” is someone who embraces life, likes to have fun and be inspired by the things around her. She’s also someone who is not too hard on herself. She’s not a health nut but she doesn’t binge on junk food all the time, and she’s OK with making mistakes in the kitchen. Who taught you to cook? In my family, where we gathered was in the kitchen, as with any Southern family. My earliest memories are cooking with my grandmother, who was very Southern. She could never use enough black pepper or salt and she put butter in everything. My mother is a really great cook and my dad is the meanest barbecuer around. I grew up in a family that was food focused. But my learning was mainly trial and error. How did you get into the world of food TV? I’m a very go-with-the-flow person. I had started this blog while I was making a movie in Canada and I thought it might just be a fun little hobby. This was like three years ago when everybody was really getting into social media. Now it has turned into this amazing creative outlet. This TV show was really just kind of a natural progression from blog to book to TV show.

Daniel Holzman Making a mean meatball on CNBC’s ‘Consumed’

Daniel Holzman, chef and co-owner of the New York eatery The Meatball Shop, loves meatballs because they’re easy, inexpensive and they allow him to be passionate about something without taking it too seriously. And they transcend cultures. “I think one of the greatest parts about a meatball is that they are celebrated all over the world and every culture has meatballs,” says Holzman, whose business is one of five restaurants profiled on CNBC’s Wednesday docu-series “Consumed: The Real Restaurant Business.” “When we first had our first investor meeting, there was an Indian guy from India, a guy from China and like an Irish-Catholic American guy. And all three of them were talking about remembering their grandma’s homemade meatballs and it really struck me in that moment like, wow. I always thought of the Italian grandma rolling meatballs because that’s what I’ve got in my head, my image of living in New York. But everybody has a fond memory of their grandma rolling meatballs, which speaks to something.” As the name suggests, The Meatball Shop, which has six locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, is all about the tasty little spheres, serving them alone or in sandwiches, sliders or entrees, using beef, pork, chicken and vegetarian mixes as well as a “special,” which could be one of the 70 or so rotating recipes they’ve come up with over their five years in business. In fact, walk in at the right time and you might be able to order yourself what Holzman calls his most unusual recipe, the Reuben meatball. “There was a chef who worked for us,” Holzman says, “... and he said, ‘I would love to make this sandwich meatball. I’ve got this idea – it will be delicious – a Reuben sandwich with Swiss cheese and corned beef and sauerkraut.’ “And I thought, ‘That sounds really disgusting.’ But I didn’t want to stifle his creativity so I said, ‘Well shucks, why don’t we make a small batch and we’ll taste it and see how it goes?’ And it’s so delicious. I don’t know how he did it but – I do know how he did it, actually. It’s amazing. The meatball is one of my absolute favorites. ... So I’m happy I didn’t stifle their creativity in that case.”

What book are you currently reading? “I’m currently reading ‘Onward.’ It’s the Howard Schultz autobiography.” What did you have for dinner last night?

When was the last vacation you took, where and why? “My mother celebrated a big birthday this year and we went to India. It was a lifelong dream of hers to travel and we took a couple of weeks and traveled around the north.”

“I had hot wings in a bar with a Budweiser.” What’s your next project? “Well, we have a manager meeting at 2 p.m. At this point, looking at the agenda, it looks like a project to me.”

Jeff Foxworthy

Jeff Foxworthy admits that if “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” had been relaunched without him, he “would be offended if anybody else hosted it. It’s my baby.” After two previous runs with the Mark Burnett-produced game show – on Fox (2007-09) and in syndication (2009-11) – the country-flavored comedian takes it out for another Fox spin starting Tuesday, May 26. The premise remains the same: An adult contestant has to answer grade-school-level questions en route to a possible $1 million prize, with available assistance from several smart youngsters – and also with frequent musings from amiable host Foxworthy. “Out of everything I’ve ever done in television,” he says, “people would come up to me every week in the grocery store or somewhere and go, ‘They need to bring the “5th Grader” show back.’ You smile and say, ‘Thank you,’ but you don’t say, ‘That doesn’t really happen. People don’t bring shows back once they’ve taken them away.’ And then they called me toward the end of last year and said, ‘If we brought this back, would you be interested in hosting?’ ” Foxworthy says he and Burnett had tossed the idea around even earlier: “He would say to me, or I would say to him, ‘We need to bring “5th Grader” back.’ It was such a great little, simple premise.” Initially, Foxworthy scoffed at that premise, until Burnett fully described it ... and the comic replied that it was “brilliant. Everybody’s going to think they can do it, and as we found out pretty quickly, not everybody can.” “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” also gave Foxworthy a game show-hosting career that he parlayed into “The Great Bible Challenge” and “The American Baking Competition.” He reasons, “I enjoy ‘Jeopardy!,’ but there are some categories like art or literature where I don’t have a chance. Everybody’s got a chance in the ‘5th Grader’ stuff, and that’s what I think makes it fun to play along with at home.” Birthdate: Sept. 6, 1958 Birthplace and current residence: Atlanta Marital status: Married; has two daughters Comedy albums include: “The Idiots: Whirled Tour,” “Have Your Loved Ones Spayed or Neutered,” “Big Funny,” “Totally Committed,” “Crank It Up: The Music Album,” “Games Rednecks Play,” “You Might Be a Redneck If ...” Books include: “You Might Be a Redneck If ... ,” “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem!,” “The Redneck Grill,” “Redneck Extreme Mobile Home Makeover,” “Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck Dictionary: Words You Thought You Knew the Meaning Of,” “Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck Dictionary II: More Words You Thought You Knew the Meaning Of,” “Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck Dictionary III: Learning to Talk More Gooder Fastly,” “Rednecks in College,” “Dirt on My Shirt,” “Silly Street,” “Hide!!!,” “How to Really Stink at Golf,” “How to Really Stink at Work: A Guide to Making Yourself Fire-Proof While Having the Most Fun Possible”

David Oyelowo goes solo on HBO By Jay Bobbin

Just before he filmed his widely acclaimed “Selma” performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., David Oyelowo tackled another giant challenge. The British actor holds the screen alone for nearly 90 minutes in “Nightingale,” a drama that – like “Selma” – counts Brad Pitt among its executive producers. Shown at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, the story of a war veteran’s psychological descent gets its biggest exposure thus far when HBO presents it Friday, May 29. The script by debuting writer Frederick Mensch was found on The Black List, a website for unproduced screenplays. “People will start to think I’m a pretty intense dude,” the pleasant Oyelowo muses of his recent work, “but I’m actually very silly in real life. Maybe this is where I get all my serious stuff out, in the roles I take.” “Nightingale’s” clearly troubled Peter Snowden became one of those roles for Oyelowo almost immediately after his agent sent him the script. “I just couldn’t quite believe what I was reading,” he recalls, “the audacity of it, the bravery of it, the singular nature of it. I’d had the privilege of doing not necessarily one-man shows, but shows where I was the primary character, so I’d had that kind of experience on stage but never on film.” That made it a key intrigue for Oyelowo, also an executive producer of “Nightingale,” to team with director Elliott

Lester and test holding “the audience’s attention for that long, and to see if it actually would work cinematically. It was kind of a dare to myself to just jump in ... plus it was a complex, interesting and intricate character to play. At the end of the day, as an actor, that’s what you’re looking for. All of those elements made this a no-brainer for me, really.” The Oscar-winning, Ava DuVernay-directed “Selma” has been available on home video since the beginning of the month. “ ‘Nightingale’ was the first time I had immersed myself in a character that way,” Oyelowo reflects, “and I knew that to play someone of Dr. King’s magnitude, I would have to go that route again. “I’ve always been one to look for roles that speak about the human spirit, and I have to tell you that playing those two back-to-back put a dent in my actorly energy, but I’m so glad for the opportunity. You could go through a prolonged and rich career and not get to play one character of that magnitude, let alone two – let alone back-to-back. That was a great period for me.”

Mexico messes with Texas – and loses – in History’s ‘Texas Rising’ Bill Paxton stars in the five-night, 10-hour miniseries “Texas Rising,” premiering Monday on History. Story on next page

‘Rising’ for independence By George Dickie

Ray Liotta

The series was shot over five months last summer and fall in the desert of northwest Mexico near Durango.

To say that Bill Paxton was an obvious choice to play Gen. Sam Houston in the new History miniseries “Texas Rising” is somewhat of an understatement. After all, the 60-year-old star of such Westerns as “Tombstone,” “Frank & Jesse” and “Hatfields & McCoys” shares a state and a bloodline with the 19th century war hero and statesman.

In creating a historical figure such as Houston, Paxton went with what was on the page. “You’re trying to get at the essence of a guy,” he says, “and this man had just unbelievable integrity and a great sense to believe in himself even when others around him were doubting him. He learned something from the Indians there and he was a great, great student of human nature and had kind of a very contemporary kind of, I think a little bit of a liberal view about people and how they should be treated.”

“We share common grandparents six generations back on my father’s side,” the Fort Worth native explains. “His mother would have been a great aunt of mine and he’s my second cousin I think four or five times removed.” “A very remarkable American ... ,” he continues. “President of a country. Probably could have been president of the United States but he abdicated the governorship going into his second term because of the breakup with his first wife, which he never spoke about, took it to his grave. He had great chivalry, a romantic character who loved his dad and loved reading the Homeric tales that his dad had in his library ... and was a very game guy.”

“And he was very commanding, that’s for sure. So you know, it’s too tall an order but if you can get an essence or a spirit or a sense of the integrity or the compassion or the empathy that this man had, then you’re doing OK.” All the actors had to ride horses and use weapons, which Liotta – who plays Lorca, a man whose family was slain in front of him by Mexican soldiers – says was fun.

The five-night, 10-hour production, which premieres Monday, May 25, stars Paxton as Houston, who against insurmountable odds led his ragtag band of Texas Rangers to victory over the well-armed Mexican armadas of the brutal Gen. Santa Anna (Olivier Martinez) in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, thus paving the way for Texas’ independence from Mexico. Others in the large all-star cast include Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Magic City”), Ray Liotta (“GoodFellas”), Thomas Jane (“Hung”), Brendan Fraser (“The Mummy”), Max Thieriot (“Bates Motel”), Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill”) and Kris Kristofferson (“Blade”).

“They wanted us to look comfortable on a horse but I wanted to do as many – and pretty much did – all the stunts that I could,” he explains. “And then I just became so infatuated with horses. I didn’t know much about it, and this guy Dale Gibson, who’s a stuntman ..., has such a love for the animal that he just really taught me a lot about horses in general. And you do see they all have different personalities. They’re so gentle and loving, I went all in. I went in for a penny, in for a pound.”

Hosts maintain Memorial Day tradition Gloria Estefan

By Jay Bobbin The National Memorial Day Concert always is a special occasion for its hosts, but it has added significance for them this year. Ten years ago, longtime friends – and fellow Chicagoans, and avid military supporters – Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise presided over the event together for the first time, assuming the role from the late actor Ossie Davis, who had succeeded E.G. Marshall. Though both had participated in the concert as guests previously, Sinise and Mantegna mark their 10th anniversary as its cohosts when PBS gives executive producer Jerry Colbert’s program its 26th annual broadcast Sunday, May 24 (check local listings). “Charles Durning did that for me,” Mantegna recalls of first being brought into the concert. “I had no idea it existed. It wasn’t on my radar, and when I arrived in Washington and took in the scope of just what this was, it changed my life in many ways. It really did. Doing the piece I had to do about 9/11, with the National Symphony Orchestra behind me playing Mozart’s Requiem and the parents of four firemen who were killed in front of me, it transcended show business. It transcended everything.” Emmy winner and former “CSI: NY” star Sinise was affected similarly when he made his National Memorial Day Concert debut with his much-traveled Lt. Dan Band, named for his war-veteran character in the Oscar-winning 1993 movie “Forrest Gump.” “Joe was the one who reached out to me initially about it,” he says. “They were going to do a USO segment, and he knew I was doing a lot of traveling with the USO. I had never seen the concert, and we were on a tour of Germany, the Netherlands and the U.K. We did about

six or seven shows on military bases there, then flew straight to Washington, D.C. It was a great ending to a great tour, to be performing in front of that many people, so I was hooked on the concert from the get-go.” Staged as usual on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, this year’s concert includes such other returnees as retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell and singers Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson. Joining the event are “The Voice” Season 5 winner Tessanne Chin and music star Gloria Estefan, whose father was a Vietnam War veteran. Estefan takes part in a tribute to disabled veterans, a main theme of the concert along with Gold Star Children (youngsters who have lost a parent to war) and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. For as long as they’ve known each other, Mantegna and Sinise acted together for the first time only recently, in an episode of Mantegna’s CBS series “Criminal Minds” that doubled as the pilot for next season’s Sinisestarring spinoff “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.” The two friends enjoyed getting to share screen time on the parent show, which will be back for its 11th year. They also have an unspoken agreement that as long as one of them hosts the National Memorial Day Concert, the other one will be there, too. “If Joe called me and said he wasn’t doing it anymore, it wouldn’t feel the same,” Sinise reflects. “We’re such good buddies, and we both have so much the same spirit in regard to supporting and honoring our military, this is just one of the favorite things either of us does every year.”

By Dan Ladd Not since 2002 has the Indianapolis 500 seen a backto-back champion. Nobody in the IndyCar series, however, would doubt Ryan HunterReay’s potential of reaching that accomplishment when the Indy 500 airs Sunday, May 24, on ABC. Still, one of the most captivating auto races and sporting events, the 500 showcases the world’s best drivers annually on Memorial Day weekend. Hunter-Reay will be defending his 2014 title, one that not only found him in Victory Lane, but is also where he established the second fastest time in race history with 2:40:48.2305 (hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds) and an average speed of 186.563 mph. Hunter-Reay hasn’t claimed an IndyCar win so far this season. He did, however, have the fastest lap in the first practice session at the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama in April and will be hoping to crank things up again on the 2.5-mile oval known as “The Brickyard.” Hunter-Reay’s career has been a storied one. He was the Indy Racing League Rookie of the Year in 2007 and won the IndyCar championship in 2012. Thus, he is the first American driver to win the Indy 500 and the series title since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006. Hunter-Reay drives the No. 28 to honor his mother, who passed away from colon cancer in 2009, and in support of an estimated 28 million people living with cancer worldwide. MOVIES JAY BOBBIN's Theatrical movie review Luckily for “The Age of Adaline,” Blake Lively has timeless beauty. That’s precisely what the movie needs at its most basic point, since it casts television’s former “Gossip Girl” as a woman whose age is frozen, thanks to one of those you-heardit-in-a story metaphysical phenomena she encounters early in the 20th century. From that point on, the picture’s makeup artists need not worry about making Lively look anything but her own age. The same goes for her co-stars in the film, given the story conceit. Put it this way: Ellen Burstyn plays Lively’s daughter. Questions? Clearly, there’s an emotional impact to staying the same age for eternity – and though Lively certainly pulls off the concept physically, looking like a total fashion plate in every era the tale covers, she doesn’t quite have the acting heft to convey the eternal conflict of essentially staying the same while watching decades and people pass. Particularly exemplifying that is Adaline’s effort to keep an especially ardent suitor (Michiel Huisman, “Game of Thrones”) at bay in modern times, though that scenario sets up a good role for Harrison Ford as the man’s father. Much of the fun of “The Age of Adaline” comes from watching Lively interact with such pros as Ford and Burstyn, but that also has the extra edge of showing how much more accomplished they are.

That said, it’s quite possible that most moviegoers will accept “Adaline” simply for the glossy romance it is. The cinematography certainly is lovely, and for however facile the script seems, there’s always the question of how a story like this ends ... since the main character’s life appears to have no end. Ever. In terms of telling a relationship story, director Lee Toland Krieger had more success overall with “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” but that movie also has the benefit of considerably more humor. “The Age of Adaline” plays it much straighter, but at least it can be said that at any given moment, it does indeed act its age.

MOVIES JAY BOBBIN's movie review movies to watch “SEVENTH SON” When a witch’s (Julianne Moore) power grows and threatens the world at large, the last (Jeff Bridges) of a group of defenders against the supernatural needs fresh help in this decidedly odd but interestingly cast fantasy. Ben Barnes (“Sons of Liberty”) plays the novice who enters the scene as the path to stopping the sorceress becomes more perilous ... and more special-effects-infused. Based on Joseph Delaney’s novel “The Spook’s Apprentice,” the film also features Alicia Vikander (of the upcoming movie version of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”), Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”) and Djimon Hounsou. ››› (PG-13: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
