‘The Whispers’

sound off in new ABC suspense series By Jay Bobbin The next time you hear a child claim he or she has an imaginary friend, it might be worth believing. That’s one of the lessons of “The Whispers,” an ABC suspense series whose executive producers include someone who often gives lots of credit to young characters, Steven Spielberg. Premiering Monday, June 1, the show doesn’t choose just any locale to spin its tale: The kids in question reside in Washington, D.C., so their alleged new buddy knows where to strike if gaining power and influence is the aim. As the youngsters allegedly are guided into increasingly alarming actions by their unseen pal, known as Drill, an FBI agent (played by “American Horror Story” veteran Lily Rabe) who specializes in child behavior is drawn in. She doesn’t know it, but she has even more of a link to the situation: Her hearing-impaired son (Kyle Harrison Breitkopf) also is communicating with Drill. In “The Whispers” as originally constructed, Drill was an alien intelligence, but series creator and co-executive producer Soo Hugh explains the show’s makers decided to “pull back on some of the story and change some of the reveals. The question of what is Drill, who is Drill, plays a bigger part in the series now. We wanted to make that question more of a season-long question. There’s people making conjectures of what and who Drill is, and some people may jump to the gun of ‘alien,’ whether or not we bear that out.”

S

Among others in the “Whispers” cast: Barry Sloane (“Revenge”) as a Defense Department agent seeking related answers in the Sahara; Kristen Connolly (“House of Cards”) as the wife he cheated on with the widowed Rabe character; and “Heroes” alum Milo Ventimiglia – seen recently on Fox’s “Gotham” as the sinister ogre – as an enigmatic character appropriately named John Doe. Is John Doe supposed to be the embodiment of Drill? “You can’t make out exactly what he’s there for,” Ventimiglia says, “but you know it’s ominous, and you know that it’s dangerous, and you know that it’s something you’ve got to follow closely and watch because it’s got to relate to the greater picture.” For Rabe – the daughter of playwright David Rabe (“Hurlyburly”) and the late actress Jill Clayburgh (“An Unmarried Woman”) – “The Whispers” means working frequently with much younger co-stars. She deems that “one of the greatest joys I had doing this show. “I think all children are pretty extraordinary, and getting to work with children is always so much fun, because it’s exactly what you’re chasing all the time in a scene partner ... which is someone who just wants to play and who is completely, wholly present. And it’s different every time. And all the things that excite me as an actor, you get that in spades with kids. And these kids were very special.” Even if the creative path of “The Whispers” has been altered a bit, the series still ends up where it always was intended to, Hugh maintains: “We always knew the last scene of the show, having had experience on shows whose finales may have disappointed some fans. I’m part of those fan circles, in terms of watching TV shows. I don’t want to be disappointed when I watch my favorite shows, and we really took that to heart when we were in the writers’ room.”

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

MattDillon of ‘Wayward Pines’ on Fox Do you like the fact that “Wayward Pines” isn’t as straightforward in its storytelling as other series might be, with all its twists and turns? This show is particularly tricky because you have different levels of reality. My character stumbles into this town early on, and he really doesn’t know ... he’s discovering stuff. It’s kind of a subjective piece of storytelling in the beginning, from his standpoint. He’s sort of with the audience, discovering things. But it’s interesting because I would talk to the other actors, and they have a whole other reality. He runs into the woman that he’s come there to look for, his ex-partner, and she’d been living there for 12 years – but he saw her two weeks ago, so things like that really don’t make sense. Right? So there are different realities. Are you a big television watcher? To be honest with you, I don’t go home and go, “I’ve got to watch that show.” I’m being honest. That’s me. I like good storytelling, and I am drawn to the creative potential that television has. And you have the ability to tell a story over a long period of time. And, then, character development – the thing about television, really, is it is all about characters. What do you find to be the biggest difference between doing movies and doing television? Most of my career has been in three-actstructured movies. I got to a point where you start to actually think that’s the only type of structure there is. But, then (with) television, there really is no ending in a way. There really is no beginning. It’s all the middle part, you know. That’s what’s kind of fun about it.

RayLiotta of ‘Texas Rising’ on History

How does it feel to be a part of two enduring classics: “GoodFellas” and “Field of Dreams”? We just had the 25th anniversary last weekend. It was great to see – just Bob (DeNiro), Lorraine (Bracco), Paul Sorvino and a couple of the other people showed up. But it was really a great night and people really responded to it. So it was just so nice that after 25 years that a movie (endures). Same thing with “Field of Dreams.” I’ve been really, really lucky. Out of the first four movies I did, two of them are movies that to this day people still watch. I have kids coming up to me 10, 11, 12 years old, believe it or not, saying that they saw “GoodFellas,” which makes me wonder about their parents. But definitely with “Field of Dreams.” You looked like a very competent ballplayer in “Field of Dreams.” How much playing experience had you had prior to that? I played Little League and junior high school. No high school. I started to get afraid of the ball after getting hit a couple of times. ... I was under the tutelage of Rod Dedeaux, who ... won like more national titles than any other (coach), definitely in baseball, at USC. And he and Donnie Buford, who used to play for the Orioles, he was there, too. So I would go four or five times a week. See, the problem was ... Shoeless Joe batted left-handed and threw righty and I throw lefthanded and bat right-handed. They said that they were going to switch it. That was only my third movie so I just kind of like didn’t really hold them at their word because I didn’t have that kind of power to do that.

Are you still doing a vegan regimen? That was actually just kind of like a detox phase that I went through. I was a vegan for about a year and it was a great experience. And I became vegan not because of animal rights. I became vegan for a year for health purposes. ... It was just kind of a detox that I was going through. So you were resetting your body? Exactly, yeah. And my mom does that, my dad does that. My husband does that. Some people like my mom, she does it for a month. Like she won’t eat red meat or meat at all for a month, just to kind of do a little bit of a detox and a cleanse and to reset your body. And some people do it for six months or a year or some people are vegans for the rest of their lives. But for me, it was just that. So what does meat taste like when you do go off one of those diets? (Laughs) Oh my God, are you serious? It tastes delicious. The problem is is that I also grew up in Texas, so that’s where a lot of the barbecue comes from as well. And when you’ve grown up around that and when you’re smelling it, it’s kind of hard to steer away from because it smells delicious. It’s great, but again it’s not like I’ve gone way off the deep end. I mean, I’m not chowing down on pork. The meat that I choose to feed my family, it’s healthy meats such as lamb, which is very low in cholesterol and saturated fat. And then turkey, we eat a lot of turkey. We don’t eat loads of beef. ... It’s a healthier alternative.

David and AndrewFung

YouTube foodies go in search of cheap eats on FYI’s ‘What the Fung?!’ For the past four years, Andrew and David Fung have been sharing their worldwide culinary adventures and offbeat wit with fans via their YouTube videos. Now, with their FYI Saturday series “What the Fung?!” they’re hoping the move to the small screen exposes them to a larger audience. “We’ve always wanted to do a food and travel show,” Andrew Fung says, “so we were like, ‘Cool, let’s do it.’ ” In the half-hour series, which premiered two weeks ago, the Fung brothers go on a comic culinary journey as they attempt to eat their way across the United States on a budget of only $50 per day per brother. In the process, they sample everything from iconic regional dishes to more imaginative and innovative fare in locales such as New Orleans, Tampa, Fla., and Asheville, N.C. “We picked cities that had an emerging food scene,” Andrew Fung explains. Along the way, they also gain access to the kitchens and the people behind the food they eat and learn how to make signature dishes from restaurant owners and chefs. And according to Andrew Fung, there was a lot to like. “(We liked) the masala dosa in Denver, the foie gras peanut butter burger in San Antonio, banana rum milkshake in Philly, regional Chinese dumplings in L.A., Burmese curry and prata in Philly and shrimp and grits in Charleston,” he says. “Those were all delicious and made with a lot of love and care. A shout out to those spots.” And they also met their fans, which according to Andrew have a lot more in common than just a love of food. “According to Google analytics and our own observational evidence,” he says, “they’re mostly Asian-Americans between the ages of 18 and 26. But we have plenty of fans from all types of backgrounds and all over the world. A commonality is that they’re all interested in Asian culture or like basketball and sneakers.”

What book are you currently reading? “ ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ by Eddie Huang and ‘Audacity of Hope’ by Barack Obama.” What did you have for dinner last night? “We had Vietnamese seven course beef with spring rolls and a broken rice plate. It was delicious in every way possible.” What is your next project? “We’re constantly pumping out YouTube videos that we hope add value to people’s lives in a cool and entertaining way.”

When was the last vacation you took, where and why? “To be honest, we haven’t taken an official vacation in four years. When your job is to create YouTube videos, you end up taking your work with you wherever you go, whether it be Singapore, Hong Kong, Asheville, North Carolina, or Chicago. And that’s cool, because we love making videos.”

Jason Derulo doesn’t just think he can dance. He knows he can. The singer has proven it in elaborately staged videos and in live performances, and instead of spending the summer touring on the strength of his recent string of hits – including “Trumpets,” “Wiggle” and “Talk Dirty” – he’ll be joining veteran choreographer and “American Idol” alum Paula Abdul as newcomers to the judges’ table beside returnee Nigel Lythgoe on “So You Think You Can Dance.” Cat Deeley also will be back as host as the Fox competition starts its 12th season Monday, June 1. “I was a little afraid to do this,” Derulo admits. “It was a lot to take on, but it’s a positive show. There’s so much give-and-take, and I’ve learned so much from being with the show already. I’m able to show much of what I’ve learned through my career and give the contestants little tidbits.” New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Detroit and Memphis, Tenn., were the audition cities for the new round of “So You Think,” which is based on the theme of stage dancers vs. street dancers. A stint Derulo did on “American Idol” gave him a taste for what he’ll do on “Dance,” since he explains, “I got to mentor, so this is in the same family, being able to share with people what I’ve been doing for a very long time. And I think people want to know that from somebody who’s actually in it ... not someone who’s done it, but who’s actually in it right now.” Derulo has been back on the charts lately with the single “Want to Want Me,” from “Everything Is 4,” which debuts the day after the “Dance” season premiere and boasts guest artists Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Meghan Trainor. He explains the “Dance” gig is perfectly timed for him, since “people don’t know the new album yet, and this will give them a chance to sink their teeth into it. Then I’ll get on the road when they actually know the songs.” Birthdate: Sept. 21, 1989 Birthplace: Miami Current residence: Los Angeles Marital status: Single Albums include: “Everything Is 4,” “Tattoos,” “Talk Dirty,” “Future History,” “Jason Derulo” Singles include: “Want to Want Me,” “Trumpets,” “Wiggle,” “Talk Dirty,” “The Page 8 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote May 31 - June 6, 2015

I’m not the kind of person who wants to listen to an album with the same song over and over again. I like to listen to an album that takes me on a journey, and that’s the kind that I hope to create.”

‘Hot in Cleveland’ signs off with series finale By Jay Bobbin When “Hot in Cleveland” began, Betty White was supposed to be only a guest star, but it didn’t work out that way. The indefatigable seven-time Emmy winner – who recently added a Daytime Emmy for lifetime achievement – became one of the continuous calling cards of the TV Land comedy, which ends its six-season run with an hourlong finale Wednesday, June 3. White’s saucy Elka has her swan song with the Los Angeles transplants whose Ohio house she’s tended to, Melanie, Victoria and Joy (Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves). “Oh, it was a very emotional, loving farewell,” White says of filming the last episode, which deals largely with Joy’s wedding plans and related complications. “We all got carried away, but to end a six-year series with everybody still adoring each other so much is a privilege.” White is amused that her “Cleveland” stint ended up lasting that long, following her earlier runs on the classics “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls.” She recalls, “I said, ‘I’ll do the pilot, but if the pilot gets picked up’ – and how few pilots get picked up, so we weren’t worried about that – ‘I can’t do it.’ Because of the schedule, I couldn’t attach myself to it. And now, years later ... .”

TV Land’s first original scripted series, “Hot in Cleveland” abided by the network’s founding credo of being a haven for familiar television faces, with numerous guest stars from White‘s former series comrades Moore and Edward Asner to Carol Burnett and Bob Newhart. The show also offered a couple of live episodes and incorporated animated segments into one story. “I still think we had a few more years left in us, but it wasn’t meant to be, unfortunately,” Bertinelli says of the sitcom that has counted Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace”) among its executive producers. “They wrote such a beautiful ending, I don’t think anybody will be disappointed. It’s crazy and wacky, like we can be, but then it ends with such a really sweet heart. The great thing about our show is that we had a lot of love in there, and you’ll see that.” Bertinelli also will be seeing her “Cleveland” cronies again, since she reports they made off-camera reunion plans before they left the show’s set. “There are not as many roles of women of our age out there,” notes the “One Day at a Time” alum. “There just aren’t, and it’s a shame, because I think we’re all still very funny and we have a lot to say. I think there’s room for everybody.”

who love reality shows. Are they going to be scared and sad that this is really what’s going on, or do we all know in our heart of hearts that’s it’s not real, and we just like to watch for the drama?”

If you watch ABC’s “The Bachelorette” this week and switch to Lifetime immediately afterward, you might think you’ve stumbled onto a new round of “The Bachelor.” After a minute or so, though, you’ll realize you haven’t. That second show actually is “UnReal,” dramatizing the off-camera world of such allegedly unscripted programs ... which some may contend is already dramatic enough. Starring familiar television faces Shiri Appleby (“Life Unexpected”) and Constance Zimmer (“House of Cards”) amid a sea of actresses playing contenders for the heart of the fictional bachelor, “UnReal” premieres Monday, June 1. Based on the short film “Sequin Raze” by Sarah Gertrude Shapiro – who’s overseeing the Lifetime series with TV veteran Marti Noxon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) – “UnReal” casts Appleby as Rachel, a sympathetic producer on a show called “Everlasting,” which is ruled with an iron fist and sharp tongue by demanding executive producer Quinn (played by Zimmer). “When I read the (pilot) script,” Appleby reflects, “it wasn’t like anything I’ve ever been a part of, or have ever seen on television. Sarah and Marti really emphasize that the show is not a satire of another show. They’ve created their own world, and it’s really more about exploring the characters, the people who make reality television and their own personal struggles with it, as opposed to taking down any specific show.” Still, Zimmer says “UnReal’s” peek behind the curtain of reality programs was “one of the many reasons I was so excited to do the show. I don’t really watch reality television, but it was fun to be able to play this character who embodies what supposedly is going on behind-thescenes. I’m so curious about how it’s going to be for those

Those familiar with Appleby and Zimmer’s work are likely to see their “UnReal” roles as crystallizations of the kinds of characters they’re known for: in Appleby’s case, the person who always wants to do the right thing despite opposing circumstances ... and in Zimmer’s, the high-powered “Type A” who won’t let emotions get in the way of sheer ambition. “I definitely felt there was a lot I could relate to in this character,” confirms Lifetime-movie staple Appleby, “but at the same time, she’s really challenging. She’s good at manipulating people to do what she needs, but it makes her feel ugly and dirty about herself.” Zimmer adds the hope that the audience “loves to hate or hates to love” her own character: “She’s doing a job and she has to get the job done, come hell or high water. I love these powerful women who are making such a resurgence on television.” Also featured in USA Network’s soon-to-debut “Complications,” Zimmer won’t be watching the “UnReal” debut since she’ll be occupied that night with her other big project of the week, attending the premiere of the movie version of the former HBO series “Entourage” (which opens Wednesday, June 3, and in which she reprises her role as studio executive Dana Gordon). “I’m going to be looking at every camera on the red carpet and saying, ‘All of you had better be going home and watching “UnReal,” ’ ” she vows with a chuckle. “You could never plan it better.”

‘Hannibal’ dines Italian as Season 3 opens By George Dickie Given the bloodbath that laid four characters’ lives to varying degrees of waste in the Season 2 closer of NBC’s psychological thriller “Hannibal,” it might seem fitting to open Season 3 with, well, dinner. And while that’s not exactly the case with the third season premiere on Thursday, June 4, there are sumptuous shots of red wine, steak tartare and blood-red drippings in its first five minutes. And with the first three episodes titled “Antipasto,” “Primavera” and “Secondo,” Lecter fans should know they’ll be dining Italian this season. Buono. As Season 3 opens, the psychopathic psychiatrist (Mads Mikkelsen) is on the run in Italy sporting a new identity but servicing the same cannibalistic appetites. He’s accompanied by his psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) and being tailed by two of his victims from the Season 2 finale, FBI agents Jack Crawford and Will Graham (Laurence Fishburne, Hugh Dancy). “I’m sure we can’t dance around the bush too long,” Mikkelsen says of his character’s ongoing bromance with Dancy’s. “Eventually we will have to meet but the circumstances, the question is always, who is going to decide the circumstances? And knowing Hannibal, he’s always a couple of steps ahead. I would be surprised if he’s not the one wearing the pants there. “But obviously if he wanted to kill Will Graham,” the 49-yearold Danish actor continues, “he would have done it. He can’t let go of the idea that there might be a future. I mean, the future that he planned is gone, cannot happen. Him, Will and Abigail (Kacey Rohl) is not happening. But there might be something else out there so he’s willing to give it another chance.”

Hugh Dancy Meanwhile, Hannibal is enjoying the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the picturesque Tuscan city of Florence with Du Maurier, whom he introduces to others as his wife, though Mikkelsen indicates it’s not that kind of relationship. “I guess that when Hannibal is enjoying himself,” he says, “he does really like to share it with someone. And in this case it’s Bedelia, someone he likes tremendously. He’s not obsessed with Bedelia the way he is with Will Graham but he likes to share his experience in Europe and he knows something about Bedelia and she knows something about Hannibal, and that makes it so much more interesting for Hannibal to have her around.” And as for Florence, Mikkelsen says it is every bit as beautiful as it appears on screen. “I think it was fantastic for all of us,” he says. “We loved Toronto (the series’ home base); it’s a fantastic city but it’s also very, very cold. So that’s where we’ve been spending three years, and all of a sudden we’re in this fantastic place that was beautiful, it was springtime and lovely food. And it was almost like going away to summer camp with the school. And all the characters went out and ate every night. We didn’t go home and it was fantastic.”

By Dan Ladd Maria Sharapova is more than a pretty face gracing the tennis courts. The ultracompetive Russian, who came up short earlier in the season at the Australian Open, will be seeking her third French Open win this week as she defends her 2014 title on the red clay of Roland Garros Stadium in Paris. The 2015 French Open resumes play Sunday, May 31, on NBC with the Round of 16, which concludes Monday, June 1, on ESPN2. The tournament will continue to air throughout the week on both networks with the quarterfinals taking place Tuesday and Wednesday, the women’s semifinals on Thursday and finally the women’s final on Saturday, June 6. The men’s final wraps up the tournament on June 7. Sharapova, who throughout her career has overcome a series of shoulder injuries, among other woes, was ranked third at this writing. She opened the year with a victory in Australia at the Brisbane International. A couple of weeks later she fell to Serena Williams in the Australian Open final. Most recently she went out in the second round in both the Miami Open in March and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany in April. An early exit in Paris would surely be an upset for Sharapova, who has five Grand Slam singles titles, including two French Opens. She made it to at least the Round of 16 in all four of her Slams in 2014. In the French Open she has a 50-10 record and a winning percentage of 83.33.

MOVIES JAY BOBBIN's Theatrical movie review

review

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” Avengers assemble anew against enemy Ultron

Perhaps you’ve heard there’s a new movie about the Avengers. Perhaps you’ve also heard there’s a country called America (yes, as in “Captain America”). Both facts are pretty impossible to miss, especially given the anticipation and hype surrounding “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” It’s colossal in the way an early-summer blockbuster should be, in the tradition of other Marvel movies that have launched previous warm-weather seasons, even if it’s more of the same by definition. It’s certainly a kick to see so many of the Marvel superheroes united again, from Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to Captain America (Chris Evans) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). And let us not forget Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), as if anyone could, thanks to her slinky modus operandi. Add Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Nick Fury (franchise staple Samuel L. Jackson), and all the major players get their moments, but It’s Iron Man who really sets the story in motion. His alter ego Tony Stark gets the idea to create a whole brigade of Iron Men to protect the world, but when things go haywire, the result is the sinister Ultron – who boasts the alternately soothing and threatening voice of James Spader, a master of such talent as he also confirms weekly on NBC’s “The Blacklist.” In the hands of writer-director Joss Whedon, who has shown through “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and (appropriately enough) “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” how capable he is of adding personal touches to the characters amid the expected mayhem, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” pretty much hits every level it can and should. It also offers other new figures in the creepily super Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen). The only drawback of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is one that really isn’t its own fault ... the feeling that you’ve seen a lot of it before. By the time a series hits this point, factoring in all the movies that have featured the main characters individually, it’s an enormous challenge not to be repetitive. The newest chapter does what it does as well as it should, but there’s one thing it can’t be: completely new. But will “Avengers” fans still have fun with it? Absolutely.
