STORY
By George Dickie So you went the extra mile last year decorating the house, buying plenty of candy and even getting yourself in the spirit of Halloween. Everyone loved what you did and all your trick-or-treaters seemed to go away happy. And still, your house got egged.
Pictured: Jason Hawes stars in “Ghost Hunters” Wednesday on Syfy.
actual exorcism is performed at the suburban St. Louis house that inspired the 1973 horror classic.
That’ll teach you.
Also live is A&E Network’s “Fear: Buried Alive” on Monday, Oct. 26, in which – yep – three people are buried in coffins, where they endure, as the press release says, “a series of escalating horrors designed to test the strength of their psyches.” As if being buried alive wasn’t test enough.
This year, instead of wasting your time trying to please a bunch of ingrates and miscreants, why not draw the curtains, shut off all the lights and do something constructive like watch TV? And since it is, after all, Halloween, why not tune in to the fine holiday fare being offered by the broadcast and cable networks this week?
For sheer quantity, you can’t beat Syfy, which has the final week of its eighth annual “31 Days of Halloween,” featuring Halloween-themed episodes of series including “Ghost Hunters,” featuring Jason Hawes and the TAPS team, and “Paranormal Witness” (Wednesday, Oct. 28) and wall-to-wall spooky flicks such as “Cabin in the Woods,” “The Omen,” “The Fog” and “Zombie Apocalypse” – airing multiple times. Boo!
Probably the most noteworthy is on Fox with the “Bones”/ “Sleepy Hollow” crossover on Thursday, Oct. 29, which finds Brennan and Booth (Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz) crossing paths with Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills (Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie) as they seek clues related to the discovery of grisly human remains. Over on NBC, it’s the Season 5 premiere of “Grimm” on Friday, Oct. 30, which picks up where Season 4 left off, with Nick (David Giuntoli) going rogue following the deaths of his mother and girlfriend. In a more humorous vein is the new Starz horror/comedy series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” on Halloween night Saturday, Oct. 31, in which Bruce Campbell resurrects his monsterhunter character from his B-movies of the 1980s. Also that night on Sundance Channel is the second-season opener of the award-winning international hit “The Returned,” about inhabitants of an idyllic French mountain town who are unaware they’re dead. Destination America on Friday takes a page from “The Exorcist” in presenting “Exorcism: Live!” in which an

Foodies will also have a smorgasbord of themed programming from which to choose on Food Network, including finales of “Halloween Wars” (Sunday, Oct. 25) and “Halloween Baking Championship” (Monday) and holiday editions of “Southern at Heart (Sunday) and “Beat Bobby Flay” (Monday). The network also offers up recipes throughout the day on Sunday. And over on sister network Cooking Channel,”Ro’s Tasty Treats” shows how to throw a spook-tastic Halloween party. Finally, it’s not officially Halloween without the annual “Treehouse of Horrors” episode of “The Simpsons” on Sunday, in which Bart dies and radiation exposure gives Lisa, Bart and Milhouse superpowers. CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A
RachelBloom of ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Monday on The CW
Where did you develop the sensibility that goes into your acting, writing and composing on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”? I always felt like a neurotic little New Yorker who wanted to be on Broadway, living in Southern California. And kids were pretty mean about it. And I went through a period of, basically, pretty bad depression and OCD right around puberty. It was also around the time that I was wearing sweatpants to school and cutting my own hair. Long story short, it culminated in seventh grade with the popular kids paying the most popular kid to ask me out as a prank. I was happy, but everyone was like, “You’re a dork for being happy.” It was a lot of that type of stuff, so I think my sense of humor has always tended towards either really, really dark or really, really happy. Since your Rebecca’s devotion to Vincent Rodriguez’s Josh is pivotal to the series, what was your role in casting him? It’s interesting because – I don’t know how interesting this is, but I was in Germany for my friend’s wedding, so I was watching a lot of these tapes while I was in Germany. That makes me sound way more cosmopolitan and interesting than I usually am, but I remember using any cell-phone minutes to talk about how amazing Vince was. I was like, “Oh, Vince is it. Can we just stop auditioning people now? He’s it.” A lot of what’s in the pilot was stuff that he came up with in his audition scene that we just kept. He just ... he blew it out of the water. It was amazing.

DR.DavidEagleman of ‘The Brain With David Eagleman’ Wednesday on PBS
We keep hearing that there will one day be software that will enable writing to be done by computer. Is that a real possibility? We’re a long way off from that. ... So far, it hasn’t gotten far at all partially because our computational power isn’t near what the brain is but it will be. The other thing is a lot of (artificial intelligence), I think, tries to take short cuts and put in kluges to try and make something work real quick and so it ends up being nothing like a human. I think probably the right way to make AI is to have it grow up and have an entire childhood, childhood experiences and suffering and longing and joy and love and all the experiences that one has. That’s what makes a writer. I mean, in order to write like a human, you have to essentially have to have lived the life of a human, and that’s what I think AI is going to eventually look like but it’ll be way past our lifetime ... . How can one maintain brain fitness as they age? Social life is, in my opinion, the most important piece of it because people are unpredictable and it takes a lot of work to deal with other people. So I think socializing is the fastest, easiest way to go there. There are all these things about doing puzzles and Sudoku and crosswords and all that, that’s probably useful, too. It’s probably not as much of a challenge. It doesn’t keep you as fit. But you know, these nuns that I went to and talked to in this convent, they’re in their 80s, some of them in their 90s and they’re very busy. They have chores everyday. They get up, they have to drive each other places. They have to deal with each other all day long. I mean, they’re really keeping active lives. It’s not like they’re solving physics equations. They don’t need to do that. You just have to be (relating to someone else).

CELEBRITY George Dickie’s Q&A
David Krumholtz ‘Gigi Does It’ Thursday on IFC
You mentioned your grandmother would sometimes flash the grandkids. Was she aware she was screwing with you when she was doing that?
To get into your character on “Gigi Does It,” you’re drawing on memories of your grandmother, imagining what it’s like to be a 77-year-old Jewish grandmother from ...? New York. She is from New York originally. Lives in Boca Raton (Fla.). But yeah, I’m trying to kind of interpret what a lot of these older women are like. After 40 years of marriage, kids, raising kids, or potentially working out in a male-dominated business world, because that generation of women were “Mad Men”-type secretaries, and so they get to a certain point, it seems – the archetype, that character – they get to a certain point where they just kind of say, “F... it.” And they live life to the fullest, no inner monolog, no filter, just the real thing. ... It’s kind of what “Mama’s Family” got away with back in the day – Vicki Lawrence – is just that bawdy, brassy grandmother who tells it like it is, who likes being in charge, who relishes the role of people waiting on her hand and foot. Page 6 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote October 25 - 31, 2015
Oh, my grandmother was one of the most devilish, mischievous people I’ve ever met in my life. She loved to create a stir. And absolutely, she knew what she was doing. She would just kind of flash you and laugh. She liked to do a lot of things. She particularly loved messing with my father, torturing him. He was the foil to all her comedy, and he was perfect because he never saw it coming, even though it was constant. He always was unassuming in assuming – you know, it’s his mother – that she wouldn’t do that to him. But she wouldn’t ridicule him.

F
explores common food myths and origins on ‘Food: Fact or Fiction’ Anyone who has ever wondered why fries are French or whether chicken soup can really cure what ails you will want to take note of a new series debuting this week on Cooking Channel. In “Food: Fact or Fiction,” premiering Monday, Oct. 26, host Michael McKean (“Better Call Saul,” “This Is Spinal Tap”) explores longstanding adages about food and seeks to debunk or prove some of the most common food myths. Along the way, he delves into the history of some common comestibles and reveals fascinating stories about them. “It’s a lot of stuff I didn’t know,” he says. “And the more we talked about it (in creating the six episode, half-hour series) and the more we went through it, the more we realized just axiomatic things about food have entered the language but we don’t know where they came from.”
Click or tap here for more!
One popular food legend explored is how fried potatoes became known as French fries. McKean explains it actually dates back to an 18th century conflict between France and Germany. “There was a Frenchman who was captured by the Germans,” he says. “And when he was thrown into military prison, he was being fed potatoes, and at first he wouldn’t eat them because it’s pig food. ... But he developed a taste for it and he came back to Paris with this idea of, ‘We can do all these things with potatoes. Look at this stuff. We can chop them up and fry them.’ And nobody would put it on the menu because it was pig food. Everybody knew what a potato was. “But the French street peddlers got ahold of the idea,” he continues, “(and) they started making French fries, basically fried potatoes, and it became a huge hit. And it was kind of a street-level food, kind of a popular food. Rather than cordon bleu, it was just good. It was just throw a little salt on there – Jesus, c’mon, I could go for a stack of fries right now. “So anyway, (the show is) not just mythology,” McKean says, “it’s stuff that you just plain didn’t know.”
What book are you currently reading?
What did you have for dinner last night?
“I’m reading two books right now, kind of juggling them depending on my mood. I’m reading a 1970 novel by R.F. Delderfield. ... And the book is called, ‘God Is an Englishman,’ and it’s kind of a wonderful Dickensian novel. ... And I’m also reading a book of science fiction stories by Paolo Bacigalupi ... who’s this very good science fiction writer.”
“For dinner last night, my daughter made a rice and bean and green salad with some kind of Asian dressing on it. All my gals cook like crazy. It’s great. My wife (actress Annette O’Toole) is a very good cook, both the girls are. But yeah, she fed me good last night.”
What is your next project? “I’m going to take a little time off, unless something comes up, and just do some writing at home and kind of take care of some business. And we’re going to do a family vacation this Christmas and we don’t know quite what we’re going to do but we’re going to have some fun.”
When was your last vacation, where and why? “We went to Hawaii a year ago – in December of 2014, and it was the six of us and we had a real blast. ...”

CELEBRITY By Jay Bobbin’s Q&A
Checking in! Given last winter’s post-Super Bowl episode, and now a 90-minute airing after the “Supergirl” premiere, Elyes Gabel knows how much CBS is behind “Scorpion.”
Elyes Gabel Birthdate: May 8, 1983 Birthplace: London
The top-billed actor on the Monday adventure-drama series is pleased about the expanded Oct. 26 story that locks genius Walter O’Brien (Gabel) and his comrades inside a “smart” building that becomes a potential death trap. “I suppose the hope is for it to be translated past the 90-minute special as a two-parter,” Gabel says, “so we’ve filmed enough footage for it to be cut into two (hour-long) episodes.”
Current residence: Los Angeles Marital status: Single (but reportedly dating his “Scorpion” co-star Katharine McPhee)
A big factor in the ratings success “Scorpion” has found since its premiere last year, Gabel believes, is the humor that underscores the action. “In another world, this would be a comedy,” the native Englishman reasons. “With things like, ‘Are they going to get out of that cruise ship?,’ there are so many possible comic story lines ... but the audience likes the jeopardy plus the slight wink that’s trying to be a trademark of the show. The energy is always up, but there’s always some kind of funny bit they might expect. And often, they get it.” The real Walter O’Brien is among the executive producers of “Scorpion,” and Gabel consults with him often on portraying him. “Rudimentarily, it’s his story,” the actor notes, “but I suppose the thing the producers try to instill in me, in having a relationship and dialogue with him, is that this is a hybrid. We’re creating a fictionalized interpretation of his life.” Among Gabel’s main joys in making “Scorpion” are the Walter-and-Paige scenes with co-star Katharine McPhee, with whom he’s reportedly involved with off-camera. “You shoot a lot of scenes just because they’re there,” he says, “and that doesn’t mean you’re not trying your hardest to imbue them with character and meet your objectives – but certain things are just easier to shoot, and that’s definitely what I experience with Katharine. She does a very good job with me about keeping a natural tone to it.”
Other television work includes: “Game of Thrones,” “The Messengers,” “Body of Proof,” “The Borgias,” “Silent Witness,” “Psychoville,” “Identity,” “Waterloo Road,” “Casualty” Movie work includes: “M-5” (aka “Spooks: The Greater Good”), “A Most Violent Year,” “Interstellar,” “World War Z,” “Welcome to the Punch,” “Widow Detective,” “Exit Strategy,” “Everywhere and Nowhere,” “Kingdom of Dust,” “Boogeyman 3” On his ongoing recognition from “Game of Thrones” fans: “The show is a huge beast, and as peripheral a character as I was on it (as Dothraki Rakharo the first two seasons), there’s still a huge attachment. (Viewers) have been in a relationship with it for so long, it doesn’t matter where you were in the show, you’re always a part of it. I’ll get, ‘I know you, man! I saw you once, man!’ It’s a great feeling.”

‘Wicked City’
in new ABC drama series By Jay Bobbin You can tell just from its title that “Wicked City” isn’t going to paint early-1980s Los Angeles in a particularly pretty way. Premiering Tuesday, Oct. 27, the ABC melodrama has a moody look and tone befitting the series’ theme. As two homicide detectives (played by Jeremy Sisto, who represented that career previously on “Law & Order,” and Gabriel Luna) pursue a serial killer (“Gossip Girl” veteran Ed Westwick and his new cohort (Erika Christensen, in a huge departure from her recent “Parenthood” role) along the Sunset Strip, journalists (Evan Ross and “American Horror Story” alum Taissa Farmiga) and others become involved in the pursuit. The actual Sunset Strip is a major filming location for “Wicked City,” and creator and executive producer Steven Baigelman reports that more than 30 years later, “There’s a lot of the strip that does look the same, actually. We have to be very, very careful about how we shoot things, and we have great visual effects working for us, so we are able to really re-create the era pretty much down to the way it was. “I think you are going to find that when you watch the show, you are not going to watch it from a place of nostalgia,” Baigelman adds. “You are actually going to feel like you are there,” in an era the producer cites as a time when L.A. was “the murder capital of the country and also the serial-killer capital of the country.” In having a pivotal role in “Wicked City,” Christensen notes she’s grateful to have “found a good variety” in moving out of “Parenthood” mode. “What really struck me about (playing) Ms. Betty Beaumont,” the actress reflects, “is how quickly she might change from the
PIictured: Ed Westwick
outset to the end of the pilot. Right away, you get the sense that she’s all in for whatever this is with Kent (played by Westwick). I’m betting she goes down the rabbit hole with him, and I find that really interesting from where she starts ... a nurse and single mom, kind of a cowed person, not super-confident, not super-comfortable in her own skin. And she may blossom.” A relative of Westwick has been “a great resource” for his “Wicked City” work, he reveals: “My mother is a psychologist, so I was able to have some quite interesting conversations with her. I think there is an individual here who is living multiple personalities. It’s one of the ways we see him manipulate so easily, and so well, the people that he interacts with. “I did research into the serial killers that we all know. Ted Bundy, his charm was notorious. For me, that kind of resonates when thinking about how Kent would be, so there was all of that that came into my thinking and my process. And as the story develops and as I learn more as the scripts come in, I will be informed more, and that journey will continue for me.” Music also has a big role (and “a very healthy budget,” Baigelman confirms) in “Wicked City,” to the extent that such talents as Joe Walsh, Ratt’s Stephen Pearcy and the All-American Rejects’ Tyson Ritter have guest spots. “I have two older brothers,” Westwick says, “so they kind of grew up in that era, although not in Los Angeles (but) in the U.K. I feel like we were flooded with images of Los Angeles and the music of that time and everything like that. It didn’t work out for me being a rock star; I would have liked to have done that, but I’ll watch it on TV instead.”

‘Supergirl’ comes to Earth ... and to CBS
Click or tap on icon for more! Back in the day, CBS was the home of “The Incredible Hulk” and the original version of “The Flash.” It’s been a while, but the network now driven largely by crime procedurals is welcoming another superhero ... or, more accurately, a superheroine. “Supergirl” lands Monday, Oct. 26, with “Glee” alum Melissa Benoist in the plum part of the Man of Steel’s cousin from Krypton, also known as Kara Zor-El or (in her earthly life) Kara Danvers. The character also fueled a 1984 movie starring Helen Slater; in a nice move, that actress will recur as Supergirl’s adoptive mother, with former television “Superman” Dean Cain as Dad. “I auditioned the day after Halloween last year,” Benoist recalls of her initial brush with the much-pursued title role, “and it was a Saturday morning. And I think the second that I saw in my email inbox the title ‘Supergirl,’ I just knew automatically that it was something important and it was something exciting and rare that I wanted to be a part of.” Still, Benoist notes she’s been undergoing a considerable physical education for the part. “I’m terrible at sports,” she allows. “I’m not coordinated in that way. I would have moments where I felt confident and where I felt strong and brave and like I could do anything. But then, like everyone else, I have really, really awkward horribly awkward – moments.” Also in the impressive “Supergirl” cast: Calista Flockhart (“Ally McBeal”) as Kara’s high-powered media-mogul boss, Cat Grant, who also employs former Daily Planet photographer James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks); Jeremy Jordan (“Smash”) as a tech-expert co-worker and
confidant; Chyler Leigh (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as Kara’s foster sibling, Alex Danvers; Jenna Dewan Tatum (“Witches of East End”) as Lois Lane’s sister Lucy; Laura Benanti (“Nashville”) as Kara’s birth mother; Peter Facinelli (“Twilight”) as the enigmatic Maxwell Lord; and David Harewood (“Homeland”) as an ex-CIA man with a keen interest in Kara. If “Supergirl” seems more suited to sister network The CW, where its executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg have the current version of “The Flash” and “Arrow” (plus the forthcoming “Legends of Tomorrow”), soon-to-exit CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler says she was sold from the start on acquiring it: “The journey that they were taking the character on, we felt, just spoke to sort of where today’s generation is. “We also really responded to the fact that it had a very broad appeal,” Tassler adds, “so we felt that we could have genre fans, but we also felt the relationship of this young woman to the people at work ... it was a great workplace comedy. And, more importantly, we thought that this was a genre and this was a franchise that would certainly open up and bring in new viewers.” Benoist instantly becomes one of the new television season’s most prominent stars, a position Flockhart knows more than a bit about from her “McBeal” days. However, not a lot of advice is being shared there, apparently. “She knows what she’s doing,” Flockhart says of Benoist. “She’s very confident. I have a little bit of insight, I guess, that I could probably provide for her – but she’s got it all together. She’s got it going on.”

NatGeo brings viewers
into the operating room on ‘Brain Surgery Live’ By George Dickie Pictured: Bryant Gumbel
If you’ve ever found yourself complaining that much of what’s on television these days isn’t exactly brain surgery, you might want to check out a new special on National Geographic Channel that literally is. “Brain Surgery Live With Mental Floss,” airing live in Eastern and Central time zones on Sunday, Oct. 25, brings viewers into the cutting-edge surgical theater at Cleveland’s UH Case Medical Center to watch an actual procedure. Bryant Gumbel is the host of the two-hour special that’s creatively guided by Mental Floss magazine, and neurosurgeon Dr. Rahul Jandial will provide expert commentary. The surgery being performed is known as Deep Brain Stimulation surgery – or DBS – a delicate though low-risk procedure used to treat essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. Here, an incision is made in the skull and the patient, who is fully awake and able to speak throughout, helps guide the surgeons to the affected area where electrodes are then implanted. A battery of tests then determine whether they’ve pinpointed the problem area. “(Neurosurgeons) use this surgery almost like a (what) pacemaker does for the heart, to try to adjust the brain to correct whatever the physical ailment is,” explains David
George, executive producer and president of Leftfield Pictures, which produced the special. “Some people, from what I understand, they can show very significant improvement in some of these physical ailments if they can find the part of the brain (that is afflicted).” Along the way, viewers will see exactly what the neurosurgical team sees – live images of the brain – and they’ll get lessons on the brain and how it functions, the latest technologies used in cranial surgery and how virtual reality is changing medicine. They’ll also get a background of the patient, who at this writing had not yet been identified. “My hope is that people walk away with a deeper fascination and education on the brain, understanding how it works” George says. “And really (it’s) the greatest computer ever invented and there is such little known about it. I think if people can walk away with a deeper understanding of how the brain works, no matter if they watch for five minutes or they watch for the two hours, I think that really is the goal of everybody involved – really, really understanding how complex (the brain is) and how far we’ve come with understanding the brain and how far we have to go.”

Campbell resurrects
B-movie monster hunter in Starz’s ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ By George Dickie Pictured: Bruce Campbell
It’s been more than two decades since Bruce Campbell last inhabited his over-the-top monster hunter character of Ash Williams from three 1980s and ‘90s B-movies. So while bringing him back for the new horror comedy series “Ash vs Evil Dead,” premiering Halloween night Saturday, Oct. 31, on Starz, didn’t seem all that alien to him, it did hurt.
past; Jill Marie Jones (“Sleepy Hollow”) as Amanda, a disgraced Michigan state trooper determined to prove Ash was behind the murder of her partner; and Lucy Lawless (“Xena: Warrior Princess”) as Ruby, a mysterious figure who thinks Ash is behind the outbreaks.
“You know, Ash has always been playing in front of me,” explains the 57-year-old actor, who is also an executive producer with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert (who also return from the original movies). “I sign Ash’s face every time I go to a convention, so that character is not that far removed. But the physical act of it, it’s been a long time since I’ve been covered in crap and thrown to the ground by Deadites and attacked and all the usual stuff that comes with it. So that was a big eye opener, of getting back into the daily grind of being attacked by dolls and Sam Raimi throwing things at my face. You know, that’s definitely eye opening to go, ‘Wow, I’m in my 50s now. Is this really still going to work?’ But it’s good; I do a lot more stretching now.”
“She is obsessive and antagonistic toward Ash,” Lawless says of her character. “Unforgiving, remorseless, maybe criminally insane. I don’t know. I’m waiting to see what happens in the second season because the character, by the end of the season you really know who she is and what she’s about. And you know that the crap is going to hit the fan.”
As the series opens, Ash is 30 years older – physically but clearly not emotionally. Still a stock boy at the local discount store, the aging lothario has spent the last three decades avoiding responsibility and the terrors of the Evil Dead. But when a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of humanity, the chainsaw-handed Ash must face his own demons and answer the call. Also in the cast are Ray Santiago (“Touch”) as Pablo, Ash’s sidekick; Dana DeLorenzo (“A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”) as Kelly, a wild child trying to outrun her
While fans of the original movies will be in their glory with “Ash,” newbies might want to know there is considerable violence, blood and gore – but the overall camp and silliness of the show’s tone neutralizes much of it. And viewers of a certain age will want to take note of the soundtrack of 1970s rock. “This is a TV show that’s perfect for all the B-side songs,” Campbell says, “not the ones you’re immediately familiar with that you’ve heard 100 million times but ones that you have not heard in awhile. ... I just know that Ash being who he is living his low-budget life, it’s the kind of rock and roll that’s got to go with him, that’s got to be there. So I think we’re going to make a lot of old rock bands pretty happy.”

By George Dickie When the subject of elite quarterbacks in the NFL comes up, very seldom do you hear Carson Palmer’s name, but that appears to be changing. The 35-year-old quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals got off to another great start this season, and hopefully it continues as Palmer and the Cardinals host Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, Oct. 26, on ESPN. Palmer’s NFL career has been a roller coaster ride over the years. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted him with top overall pick in 2003, having great expectations for the 2002 Heisman Trophy winner out of USC. Palmer held the clipboard his first season and took over in 2004. His best year was 2005, when he led the Bengals to the playoffs but was injured early on in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who went on to win the Super Bowl. The Bengals made the post-season again in 2009, but relations between them and Palmer were souring, which eventually led to Palmer signing with the Oakland Raiders for two seasons. He was traded to the Cardinals for a sixth-round draft pick in 2013, which is now looking like a great deal for the Cards.
CarsonPalmer
In 2014, Palmer started only six games before tearing an ACL just days after signing a contract extension with the Cards. By the time Arizona reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team, they were on their third-string quarterback and their offense was unproductive in a loss to the Carolina Panthers. If Palmer can stay upright and their defense remains solid, the Cards could be a major contender in the NFC.

Robert De Niro appeals as Anne Hathaway’s
‘Intern’ The idea of a movie that casts Robert De Niro as Often echoing “Baby Boom,” on which Meyers also was someone known as “The Intern” is amusing to begin with. a major creative factor, “The Intern” makes a lot of points about the differences between generations. If those seem Add to that the fact that it’s written and directed by Nancy a little heavy-handed at times, Meyers absolutely has hedged her bets by making an extremely agreeable team Meyers – who has been meeting the needs of such of De Niro and Hathaway. There’s no question the two veteran talents as Meryl Streep (in “It’s Complicated”) Oscar-winners will “bring it,” and they appear to have a and Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton (in “Something’s true joy in working together that transcends their roles Gotta Give”) – and you know you’re not going to get and the plot. something hard-hitting. Which is OK, since no one does this kind of middle-age or post-middle-age fantasy better than Meyers does. By casting Anne Hathaway as De Niro’s boss in “The Intern,” the filmmaker also services a younger demographic, as she did in the entertaining “The Holiday” ... and it’s a very pleasant blend. The Hathaway character oversees a fashion-oriented Web site, and since it’s a new venture, the heat is very much on her. She resists getting too familiar with De Niro, who’s part of the firm’s senior internship program, but he eventually proves invaluable to her – not only for his own background in the business world, but also for the sympathetic and reliable ear and shoulder he is.
Frankly, it’s the kind of magic you for to the movies for ... and it works so well, the film seems to lose some of it mojo any time the camera is off the two of them, though it’s nice to see Rene Russo as an intended love match for De Niro. There also are subplots involving Hathaway’s home life and De Niro’s exchanges with younger male co-workers, and while they’re meant to flesh out the story, De Niro and Hathaway together remains the main event here. The two-hour running time of “The Intern” happily supplies a lot of that. It’s a nice addition to the resumes of both stars, and it lets Nancy Meyers keep her crown as the queen of the kind of movie she does so well.

“PIXELS” Fans of video games of the 1980s are likely to get the biggest kick out of this effectscrammed fantasy directed by Chris Columbus ... no slouch in the fantasy department, as the first two “Harry Potter” movies proved. Adam Sandler plays a champ of such games, summoned to help his childhood friend – the U.S. president (Kevin James ... yes, the “King of Queens” as president) – counter an attack by aliens that take the form of the games’ characters. Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), Josh Gad and Sean Bean also appear, but the top stars here clearly are the visual wizards behind the scenes. In another tale, Homer (voice of Dan Castellaneta) wakes up with short-term memory loss, then, finally, radiation exposure bestows superpowers on Lisa (voice of Yeardley Smith), Bart and Milhouse (voice of Pamela Hayden). Previous “Treehouse of Horror’’ episodes can been seen in primetime on Sunday through Friday on FXX. MONDAY 10 p.m A&E Cursed: The Bell Witch This new five-episode docu-series
explores one of America’s most enduring ghost stories, which started in early 19th-century Tennessee when, as legend has it, a landowner named John Bell was cursed from beyond the grave by a woman he had killed. The spell she supposedly cast doomed the first-born male in each generation of Bell’s descendants. Now, contemporary descendant John Ceallach seeks to break the curse so his oldest son will be spared. WEDNESDAY 9 p.m SYFY Ghost Hunters In a special new Halloween-themed episode called “Darker Learning,’’ Jason Hawes and the TAPS team are on location at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vt., where they try to determine whether -- as local legend would have it -- a mysterious, doomed love triangle and suicides could be

responsible for paranormal activity in the area. 10 p.m SYFY Paranormal Witness As the title suggests, a new Halloweenthemed episode called “The Real Conjuring’’ explores the true details in the story that inspired the 2013 horror movie blockbuster “The Conjuring.’’ The case involves a Rhode Island family that is forced into a terrifying battle with the relentless spirit of a murderous witch in their home. Syfy also will air “The Conjuring’’ on Halloween night. THURSDAY 8 p.m FOX Bones Crossover alert! Season 2 opens with the arrival of a new character, Berg (Laurent Lucas), an engineer who has come to the town seeking answers to its myriad mysteries. Anne Consigny and Yara Pilartz, who respectively play Claire and Camille, are among the returning cast members. By Jay Bobbin and John Crook
9 p.m ANIMAL PLANET Monsters Inside Me “There’s Something Living in My Knee’’ sounds like a misguided horror movie, but it’s actually the episode title of this new season premiere, built around the case of a 7-year-old who scrapes his knee on an Orange County, Calif., beach. As the joint swells to the size of a big orange and the wound turns black, doctors suspect the lad has a MRSA infection. When the mom investigates on her own, however, she finds something that’s both shocking and horrifying. 9 p.m DESTINATION AMERICA Exorcism: Live! The Tennessee Wraith Chasers from the Destination America series “Ghost Asylum’’ are part of the team exploring the St. Louis house that was the site of a 1949 exorcism that inspired the hit book and movie “The Exorcist.’’ According to producers of this new two-hour special, no one subsequently ever attempted to cleanse the house of any lingering demonic entities, so the TWC team, joined with medium Chip Coffey (“Paranormal State’’), hope to connect with any troubled spirits there. Boris Karloff Frankenstein’s monster. ’Nuff said? Bela Lugosi Like Karloff, all it takes is the mention of one role – Count Dracula – to justify Lugosi’s place on this list. Elsa Lanchester The get-up has been much mocked ever since, but British acting veteran Lanchester became an immediate icon as the “Bride of Frankenstein.” Lon Chaney Jr. Terror stayed in the family, thanks to Junior’s portrayal of the Wolf Man, a part that his natural appearance made him ideally suited for. Peter Lorre Lorre’s unusual look made him a natural for the horror genre, but he even could be scary on a more subtle level, evidenced by his haunting portrayal of a child-killer in the classic “M.” Vincent Price He became a caricature of himself in later years, as in “Theater of Blood” ... but in his prime (“House of Wax,” etc.), the refined Price could be quite a frightening fellow. John Carradine Though he also made many other types of films, the presence of the craggy-faced father of fellow actors David, Keith and Robert often signaled something scary was on the way. Anthony Perkins Here’s a case of an actor whose horror cred comes down to one role (all together, now) – Norman Bates in “Psycho.” If the film’s very last shot doesn’t creep you out, nothing will.
Boris Karloff
John Hurt While he isn’t only a horror actor, Hurt can lay claim to one of the knock-your-socks-off scare sequences in all of movie history, given what happens to him in the pivotal scene of “Alien.” Heather O’Rourke Sometimes innocents can be terrifying, demonstrated by young O’Rourke as the target of specters (“They’re he-e-e-ere!”) in “Poltergeist.” Robert Englund “A Nightmare on Elm Street” might have yielded a few too many chapters – even extending to the television series “Freddy’s Nightmares” – but the sharp-fingered Mr. Krueger was good for some solid screams early on. Tobin Bell So effective as the lethally clever Jigsaw in the “Saw” movies that the series just won’t let him die, though the character technically is dead, Bell is back yet again in the current “Saw 3D.”

Make Halloween Candy Bark Basically all you need to do to make Halloween Candy Bark is chop up some Halloween candy, melt some chocolate, spread it on foil and top it with the chopped candy. You can use assorted candy- made with Snickers, M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces and candy corn - or select a combination of your favorites. In the picture is Reese’s Pieces, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Reese’s Fast Break Bars and Butterfingers to make a peanut butter lovers’ bark.
Ingredients
Assorted Halloween candy, about 15 pieces or packs (you want the equivalent of 1 to 1 1/2 cups chopped candy)
Directions
Line a baking sheet with foil, shiny-side up; smooth out the creases. Cut the candy bars into pieces. If you’re using candies like M&Ms or Reese’s Pieces, crush them if you’d like or leave them whole. (They crush easily if you put them in a resealable plastic bag and smack them against the counter, or use a coffee mug to crush them in the bag.) Create a double boiler by putting a glass or metal bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Add the chocolate and stir until melted and smooth. Do not overheat the chocolate or it will seize. Remove the bowl from the pan and wipe the condensation from the bottom. Pour the melted chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet; use the rubber spatula to spread it into a 10-to-12-inch circle, about 1/4-inch thick. Press the candy pieces into the chocolate, arranging them so each bite has a mix of flavors, colors and textures. Refrigerate the chocolate for 1 hour to completely set before breaking it into large pieces. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks.
