Familiar faces get

new NFL addresses in 2015 By George Dickie

The Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said that “change is the only constant in life.” Surely he could have made that observation about the NFL, too. Player movement in the league has been brisk since the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX in February. And a lot of it has happened to the defending champs themselves. They’ll be on display when they open the 2015 season at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, Sept. 10, on NBC. As the Pats come into the 2015 season, they’ll be without the services of their two-time MVP quarterback Tom Brady, suspended for the season’s first four games after failing to cooperate with investigators probing the deflation of footballs during last season’s AFC Championship game. While the loss of the 38-year-old Brady is tough, what could prove disastrous for the Pats are the departures of key defensive cogs Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, Kyle Arrington and Vince Wilfork. Their dominance of the AFC East may be over. The obvious beneficiaries of any Pats’ backslide would be the New York Jets, who signed Revis and former Arizona Cardinal Antonio Cromartie to form what could be the league’s best defensive backfield; and the Buffalo Bills, whose myriad offseason moves – among them the addition of Pro Bowl RB LeSean McCoy – make them a very interesting team.

The St. Louis Rams may have made the steal of the year when they swapped injury-prone, underachieving QB Sam Bradford and a draft pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for Pro Bowl QB Nick Foles and two picks. Foles may have fallen off some last season from his impressive 2013, but he’s certainly worth more than a QB who has had two torn ACLs in two years. Score a few GM of the Year votes for the Rams’ Les Snead. Also very active over the past eight months have been the New Orleans Saints, who missed the postseason in 2014 with a 7-9 record. With QB Drew Brees entering his late 30s, the Saints needed to switch to a more run-oriented offense, so they traded away All-Pro TE Jimmie Graham, Pro Bowl G Ben Grubbs and WR Kenny Stills and brought in All-Pro C Max Unger, Pro Bowl RB C.J. Spiller and Pro Bowl CB Brandon Browner. These moves could be a revelation or a disaster. Only time will tell. As if he didn’t have enough weapons, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck gets another in bruising five-time Pro Bowl RB Frank Gore. We pity the defenses that have to try to contain this attack. Other noteworthy names in new cities include DT Ndamukong Suh (Miami Dolphins), WR Brandon Marshall (Jets), S Dashon Goldson (Washington Redskins), RB DeMarco Murray (Eagles), LB Keith Rivers (Dallas Cowboys), WR Michael Crabtree (Oakland Raiders), WR Andre Johnson (Colts), RB DeAngelo Williams (Steelers) and WR Dwayne Bowe (Cleveland Browns).

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

DaniellePanabaker of ‘The Flash’ Tuesday on The CW

How does it feel to be back on the set for Season 2 of “The Flash” (which begins airing Oct. 6)? Oh, it’s been wonderful! In some ways, it feels like we never left; we were back shooting at some locations where we were just three months prior. And it feels like we’re all a little bit more well-rested than we were at the end of last season, but otherwise, it feels great. There’s also a sort of unspoken inner confidence in all of us as we’re coming back for Season 2. We worked really hard on Season 1 and people really responded to it, so it’s great now that we’re getting the opportunity to do it again. Certain things have to change by necessity for Season 2, based on how Season 1 ended, plus you’re adding Shantel VanSanten and Teddy Sears as cast regulars. Does that process feel natural to you? That’s what’s exciting. Our writers are so wonderful and so talented, they knew we couldn’t do the same thing all over again. We’re just trying to top it and do everything a little bit better. You’ve done fantasy and horror acting before, in such movies as “The Crazies” and the “Friday the 13th” remake, but how has your current genre work been different for you? It’s been so rewarding. That’s what’s great about being on TV – you’re in front of an audience on a consistent basis. People come up to me all the time, no matter where I am, and talk about the show. Even the guy at TSA, when I’m getting on an airplane, wants to know if I can tell him about Season 2. My favorite thing is when parents come up and say, “We watch it as a family. We all watch it together.” I think that’s something that’s really special.

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

C

KatieLeClerc of ‘Switched at Birth’ Monday on ABC Family With ABC Family now repositioning itself as the network for “Becomers,” how do you think “Switched at Birth” fits in? If the network’s brand is “growing up,” we are the show that its audience right now has grown up with. We seem to be the perfect transition show for them, because now, Daphne (played by LeClerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) are in college ... and what is that going to look like for them? And what is it like to grow up? When I was 15, I wanted to be 20. And at a certain age, you go, “Wait a minute! I don’t want to get older. I want to go backward.” For a long time, you want to hurry up to the next step, so it’s kind of nice to show characters on television who are embracing that next step, but doing so in a series environment that’s real. College is messy for a lot of people, and I love our show because it’s not afraid to talk about that experience. Earlier this season, a story line about whether an intimate night between Bay and her ex-boyfriend was consensual stirred controversy. How did you feel about the way that plot was handled? We didn’t tell the story in a very clean way. There’s no “winner” in that scenario – and there shouldn’t be. I have to say I’m very proud of ABC Family for saying, “We don’t have to have a direct ending to this.” This will affect these characters for the rest of their lives, whether we see that on the air or it’s in their minds.

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

of ‘Kevin From Work’ Wednesday on ABC Family How do things continue for your character Kevin and his co-worker Amy (Paige Spara), now that the whole office knows of his love for her, on “Kevin From Work”? I think those are situations you dread, and once you’re in them, you realize that life is continuing anyway and you have to find a way through it. You kind of hope everything will be OK, and there are moments of that being true ... and moments of, “Oh, this is the worst thing. I’ve made a terrible, terrible mistake.” I think for both of them, having that lid lifted of the box opens possibilities. I’ve certainly had it in my own life where there’s that “maybe,” and that’s the place where we sit now (on the series). And it’s very fickle, that not knowing. Everybody’s trying to feel totally cool about it, and that lends itself to some great comedy. Do you consider Kevin and his co-worker Brian (Matt Murray) to be true friends? They’re a bit of an odd-couple tag team, one of those friendships that comes out of geographical convenience and the lack of another friend. They’ve found a way to be what each other needs. Brian is just 100 percent who he is, with no apologies, and I love how Kevin is with him. He’s forgiving of these strange ideas and turns of phrase. How is it to have Amy Sedaris as a recurring regular on the show? I think all of us wish that Amy was with us a little more often. She’s such a unique performer and such a brilliant energy to be around ... you never know what’s going to come out of her. She’s a wild card, and I think she enjoys shocking all of us kids. It’s so amazing to see that kind of boundless risk-taking. It’s very cool.

FOOD John Crook’s What's for Dinner

F

Your book “Blood, Bones & Butter” is revered in the food world. What other chefs’ memoirs do you admire? “(Anthony Bourdain’s) ‘Kitchen Confidential’ is the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance of line cooks the world over. I also love ‘The Apprentice’ by Jacques Pepin, so fine and elegantly written. And Madeleine Kamman’s ‘When French Women Cook’ is a perfect combination of food, story, sensuality and practicality all in one book.” What’s your favorite ingredient to kick up a dish? “I put a lot of raw garlic in a lot of dishes that don’t usually get that, and that’s what usually lights things up for me.” What is your favorite comfort food? “I never eat for any other reason than I am very hungry. The real answer, of course, is gin and tonic is what I’m going to have if I need to cheer up!” What kind of music plays in your kitchen at work? “It’s so eclectic. When a new cook pops in their iPod, it can give you a sense of whether that person will work out. If it’s all pop girl crap, that’s going to be tough, or if it’s all heavy, heavy metal, that’s not going to work, either.”

imitates life, they say, and that extends to the culinary arts as well for Gabrielle Hamilton, the New York restaurateur featured in the first eight episodes of this season’s “Mind of a Chef.” Currently airing Saturdays on PBS (check local listings), each episode of this revelatory series takes viewers inside the world of a gifted chef. Hamilton, who opened her East Village restaurant Prune in 1999, takes an autobiographical approach to her menu choices. “The food that I cook largely comes directly from deep experience with whatever the item and rarely if ever from a magazine or cookbook or another restaurant,” she explains. “Usually the dishes have some profound or just pleasurable connection to a time and place in my life when I would eat these things: this lamb chop from a family party when I was a kid or this Greek salad from the time I was a backpacker in Greece and ate a salad like that every day.”

She prides herself on being practical and pragmatic, buying ingredients at her neighborhood grocery store. “You just have to know how to pick, how to select, then decide what you’re going to do with it,” Hamilton says. “I really stand by the pragmatism and realistic-ness of making do with what is in front of you, what you can afford and what you have the time for. It’s very possible to eat very well without the pursuit of the finest grain of wheat or the most perfect tomato.” And if you want to make her nuts, just throw away stuff that could still be used. “It’s a work ethic issue for me,” she says. “If you work a little harder, you can find a way to use the whole creature or the whole vegetable.”

Pascal As he prepared for his role as undercover DEA agent Javier Pena in the Netflix original series “Narcos,” Pedro Pascal at first found himself intimidated at meeting the real Pena. “I’m like, ‘I’m just an actor. You were there. You lived it,’ ” the 40-year-old Chilean-born, U.S.-reared actor says. “I’m like taking off a costume and putting on some cool fighter pilot glasses. ... There was something very new about meeting the person you’re playing and knowing that he experienced the story that we’re telling. There is something very intimidating about that. And ... he is not an intimidating person at all – he’s kind and generous and friendly, easy going, just wants to have a beer and hang out kind of guy.” To familiarize himself with the story of Pablo Escobar and the 1980s Colombian drug trade for “Narcos,” Pascal picked the recently retired Pena’s brain, read books and underwent training with cast mate Boyd Holbrook at the DEA’s training academy in Quantico, Va. Also helpful was filming in Colombia, where Pascal reports he regularly met people who lived the story. “I was certainly given complete freedom in terms of how I wanted to interpret this person,” says Pascal, who also has extensive stage experience as an actor and a director. “And Javier was just sort of like positioning himself at my disposal in terms of anything that I wanted to know in terms of what he went through. And what we ended up doing was just hanging out. All we did was hang out and drink beers and talk, and he told me stories, which I will never share.”

Here comes Colbert:

S

Stephen takes over CBS’ ‘Late Show’ By Jay Bobbin

After more than a year of buildup, Stephen Colbert is ready to just get going. The former “Colbert Report” anchor assumes the seat David Letterman had for almost 22 years when CBS debuts “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” Tuesday, Sept. 8. With the program’s new host dropping what he labels the “character” he played on Comedy Central, he’ll welcome Stay Human’s Jon Batiste as his bandleader and George Clooney and Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush among his inaugural guests in New York’s freshly renovated Ed Sullivan Theater. “CBS has asked nothing of me other than (that) I fill an hour every night Monday through Friday,” a still-droll yet sincere Colbert says, “so the format hasn’t changed. There are certain things that happen perforce. There are six commercial breaks. There are seven acts. “I love the grind of a daily show. I love a live audience. I like meeting the guests, and I like telling jokes ... but that’s it. They haven’t asked me to change or do anything. They like the show I used to do, and they said, ‘Would you mind adding another 120 hours a year?’ ” For the bountiful comedy he did on “The Colbert Report,” Colbert believes the exchanges with guests will help make his “Late Show” transition easy and pleasurable: “I’m a comedian, but I have to say very quickly that my favorite thing on the (former) show became doing the interviews because I got into comedy through improvisation. And when we’re doing the jokes, which I love writing, and I love producing, I can only get those wrong. “But when you’re interviewing people, you don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s much closer to how I learned my craft. And you can have big stars or important politicians or impressive thinkers, but it’s sometimes the people you don’t expect to impress you who can be your best guests.” Indeed, Colbert notes that “all I really want from a guest is somebody who has something to say so I can play with them. We have

some common topic to be talking about. My character was actively ignorant about them.” That “character” Colbert exuded on “The Colbert Report” had reached the end of the line, he believes, when the “Late Show” offer came. “I felt I had done everything I could with him or everything I could do with that show ... other than have my honest interest in my guest, which is almost constant. And so now, I feel actually more freed up. That was in some ways the most energetic, the most exciting part of the show to me. And now, I don’t have to hold back at all.” For advice on taking over “The Late Show,” Colbert went to the most logical source ... Letterman. “I asked him questions (for) about a half an hour, and at one point I said, ‘Do you mind me asking you these questions?’ And he said, ‘I don’t mind at all. No one’s ever asked me these questions.’ And I said, ‘Really? No one’s ever asked you these questions?’ And he goes, ‘Who would know to ask, and who would care what the answer was?’ And that felt great. That was a very gracious way for him to say, you know, ‘Only the person sitting behind that chair cares about the conversation we’re having right now.’ ” Actually, a couple of others might, both named Jimmy: Fallon on NBC and Kimmel on ABC. Colbert’s arrival only can stoke the competition among late night shows, but he maintains he’s staying focused on his own task. “I have my own hopes for the kind of show that I want to do, but I won’t know until I’m on my wave,” he says. “All I can feel right now is the swell behind me, and I’m paddling as fast as I can, but I do know that the idea of war between hosts makes no sense to me. It’s not like my success takes away from anybody else, and fighting amongst each other doesn’t sound funny. There’s no joke there, so I’m not interested.”

‘Longmire’

S

gets a second chance on Netflix By George Dickie

Even after A&E Network canceled “Longmire,” title star Robert Taylor didn’t believe his three-season-old series was history. “I thought it was a joke,” the 52-year-old Australian actor says. “... It took me a week or so and I reconciled myself to not doing it again, but I always believed we weren’t finished. I just felt it in my bones that we weren’t done.” And his feelings were proven correct when nearly three months after its Aug. 2014 termination, Netflix picked up the hourlong drama for a fourth season, which drops with 10 episodes on Thursday, Sept. 10. The story picks up where the third-season finale left off, with Absaroka (Wyo.) County Sheriff Walt Longmire (Taylor), having found out who was behind his wife’s murder, succumbs to his darker impulses and takes off with revenge in mind. What happens next and whether he follows through are questions that are answered in the new season. “I think he feels things very deeply, especially since the death of his wife,” says Taylor, who is joined in Season 4 by fellow cast returnees Lou Diamond Phillips, Katee Sackhoff, Cassidy Freeman and Bailey Chase. “I think that kind of destroyed his universe and nothing seems to make sense anymore. And as much as a guy his age and with his background can be searching for something, he would never admit it in polite company – or impolite company, for that matter. ... I mean, he does resolve to do something about it but ultimately that may not be the right decision.” When it comes to details on Season 4, Taylor is understandably tight-lipped lest he give away spoilers but a trailer says it will be about second chances. And for Walt, that means how he moves forward now that he thinks he’s found his wife’s killer. “Obviously, it’s all about the writing,” Taylor says of how he connects to Walt’s moods. “... You bring your soul, or

Pictured: Lou Diamond Phillips a version of your soul, with your spirit and you have to render that and deliver that, and nobody gives you any notes on that. That comes entirely from the actor.” Phillips, who plays Longmire’s best friend, Henry Standing Bear, agrees. “I think it’s part and parcel of playing characters who are our age,” he says. “I mean, I’ve been around a long time – we both have – and to finally be able to play characters who are mature men who have life experience, who have baggage and history and mileage – the scripts are all fantastic but they do rely on us to bring that sense of gravitas to it. “And I’ve always said as an actor we’re very fortunate because the longer we live, hopefully the more we learn, the more our minds are open, the more we are able to apply having kids, having our ups and downs, having challenges in life to our work that enriches our work. And our writers have blessed us by not giving us superficial characters. They put us in these situations where we have to draw on our experiences, our empathy, our compassion as mature human beings, to round out who these characters are and how they deal with their choices.”

STORY

Not only did the Civil War have enormous significance to history, it eventually had huge meaning to the history of Ken Burns. The much-honored documentary maker had made films before 1990 – “Brooklyn Bridge” and “The Statue of Liberty” among them – but his profile of the critical mid-19th-century battle cemented his career and helped enable him to tackle such projects as “Baseball,” “Jazz,” “The War” (World War II) and “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History” later. In a newly remastered version, “The Civil War” marks its 25th anniversary by returning to PBS in nightly telecasts Monday through Friday, Sept. 7-11 (check local listings). “It’s really a goosebump moment for me,” the ever-pleasant Burns confirms, “because it was such a central part of my professional life. To have this new life given to these images ... I’ve said it many times, but what I saw through the lens was not what came out on a tiny 16mm film image about the size of my thumb. And what we lost to grain and the fact of film, we’ve now been able to recapture as we’ve gone frame by frame through 11-1/2 hours and restored it. “All of a sudden, the iconic cannon in silhouette on the mountain is not just a smear of orange, but this complex thing,” adds Burns. “The images look as sharp and clear as I saw them through the viewfinder. I think this removes a few veils between the audience, including myself, and the subject of the Civil War that I would argue is still the most important event in American history. We live out every day the issues that came about because of the Civil War, and that have been consequences of since.” “The Civil War” set down the Burns technique that also employs a large voice cast as pivotal players. Sam Waterston and Jason Robards are heard as Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant respectively, with Julie Harris, Morgan Freeman, Garrison Keillor, Jeremy Irons, Colleen Dewhurst, Derek Jacobi, Studs Terkel, Arthur Miller, Kurt Vonnegut and Horton Foote among other notables who lent their vocal talents. “I had worked on a short film about Emily Dickinson, and Julie was the narrator and host,” Burns recalls of landing her participation in “Brooklyn Bridge” as “a first-person voice, this thing I’d been experimenting with. She did it, then when I told everybody else who’d been turning me down, they’d say, ‘Julie Harris? The five-time Tony Award-winning actress?’ I’d go, ‘Yes,’ then they’d say, ‘Well, OK. I guess we can spare a half-hour or an hour.’ Then ‘The Civil War’ came along, and people wanted to be involved.” Burns notes the “Civil War” upgrade “wouldn’t have happened” without the financial support of Bank of America, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS itself. He says securing such funding is “still hard, it’s still crazy, it’s still tenuous, it’s still anxiety-producing – but I think the validation is that we’re hungry for content. We’re also hungry for meaning, and all meaning accrues over duration. The work you’re proudest of, and the relationships you care most about, are the ones that have benefited from sustained attention.” Page 16 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote September 6 - 12, 2015

Ferrell takes one

for the teams on HBO

By George Dickie

Click or tap on icon for more! But when he showed up in first thing in the morning in the A’s clubhouse, not everyone knew what to think.

Ten teams, 10 positions, one very tired comedian. That’s the scenario Will Ferrell lived this past March 12, when for charity he took the field in five Arizona preseason games to play all nine on-field positions plus designated hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners, Oakland A’s and San Diego Padres. His head-spinning journey is chronicled in the documentary “Ferrell Takes the Field,” airing Saturday, Sept. 12, on HBO. Produced by a partnership between Major League Baseball and the humor website Funny or Die, the presentation is dedicated to helping Cancer for College, which provides scholarships for young people who have had the disease. In each of the five games, the then-47-year-old former “Saturday Night Live” star suited up with men half his age, played for half an inning, then went across the field to the other clubhouse, changed uniforms and played another halfinning. When done, he hopped into a waiting helicopter that took him to the next ballpark, where he repeated the routine. Along the way, he changed in bathrooms, ate lunch in a trainer’s room and did everything on the fly. On the field, he was vintage Ferrell – irreverent, goofy and clueless.

“Some of (the players) found out that morning,” explains Joe Farrell, an executive producer of the film. “I think some players were thrilled. Some players had costumes dressed as Will in his movies and some dressed up as Burt Reynolds from his ‘SNL’ ‘Jeopardy!’ days to sort of be with Will. So some players were really into it, and we were super respectful because other players, they’re trying to make a team. You know, we made some jokes about how two weeks from now, a lot of you guys might not be on the team. But that was true, and so we were super respectful to guys taking at-bats.” When the day, which lasted from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., was done, Farrell and the crew marveled at how Ferrell was able to rise to the occasion – and how everything seemed to fall into place. “I said to one of the cameramen who’d been a cameraman out of New York for I think 27 years, ‘How does this rank?’ ” Farrell says. “He’s like, ‘That was the most intense day of my life.’ Especially for the camera guys. They never stopped, so it was like, on the field, running, then in the van and then in a helicopter. And you have this pressure of like, ‘I can’t miss it,’ because there’s no going back; there’s no ‘Let’s take that again.’ You just have to capture it.”

MOVIES JAY BOBBIN's Theatrical movie review

review By now, it’s no surprise that Meryl Streep can do virtually anything ... and often, she’s proven that during the summer movie season. “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Julie & Julia” are among the notable examples, and she ensures there’s thoughtful entertainment during the warm-weather months again with “Ricki and the Flash,” another brave change of pace for the iconic actress who’s been playing prime ministers and witches lately. Now, she‘s a rock star – literally – getting big assists from director Jonathan Demme (“The Silence of the Lambs”) and writer Diablo Cody (“Juno”) as she portrays a cover band’s lead singer who left her family to pursue her musical dreams. She hasn’t reached the heights she’d hoped for, but she makes an OK living that includes personal involvement with the band’s guitar genius (actual pop-rock veteran Rick Springfield). The balance in her life is up-ended when her well-todo ex-husband (Kevin Kline, Streep’s leading man in “Sophie’s Choice”) summons her home to deal with family crises that include the emotional unraveling of her daughter (actual Streep offspring Mamie Gummer) and strain with her sons (Sebastian Stan, Nick Westrate). That’s a lot for one character to handle, but when the one character is played by Streep? No problem! She’s ever-watchable as the rough-around-the-edges Ricki, and it’s even more fun when you stack it up against such other recent Streep roles as Margaret Thatcher. Even when the script veers toward hitting potential potholes, the star spins gold from it, just by doing what she does so expertly. Among her co-stars, Springfield is especially good, dramatizing the habitation of a world he knows so well. His image is burned into so many minds from his younger years when he wished that he had “Jessie’s Girl,” seeing him redefine that with his work here – particularly opposite Streep – is another of the picture’s pleasures. “Ricki and the Flash” may not hit every note perfectly, but even when it doesn’t, it stays true to its tune. And that, and its solid use of Streep, are something to sing about. Page 18 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote September 6 - 12, 2015

“THE AGE OF ADALINE” Some have referred to former “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively as a timeless beauty, and that’s never been more true than in her title performance in this fantasy-drama, which draws fresh pathos from a familiar premise. She plays a woman whose aging is halted by an accident, leaving her to appear eternally young ... a dilemma for her as those around her grow older. The situation becomes especially dicey when she finds her true love (Michiel Huisman, “Game of Thrones”) and becomes acquainted with his parents (Harrison Ford, particularly good here, and Kathy Baker). Ellen Burstyn also stars, and Lively holds her own impressively against such high-caliber colleagues. By Dan Ladd They say that backup quarterbacks are the most popular guys on the football team. With New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady serving a suspension (appeal pending), backup Jimmy Garoppolo could surely get a lot of attention this week when the Pats host the Pittsburgh Steelers to open the 2015 NFL season, Thursday, Sept. 10, on NBC. With the outcome of any appeal unknown, Garoppolo was working in the pre-season with the starters under coach Bill Belichick’s guidance. Let’s not forget that when Brady went down with a knee injury in 2008 that Belichick coached then backup Matt Cassel to a 10-5 record as a starter. At the most, Garoppolo would be under center for four games, which beyond the Steelers include Buffalo and Jacksonville before heading to Dallas to face Tony Romo and the Cowboys in Week 5. That game follows a bye week for New England. Garoppolo, a rookie last season, was considered one of the better quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft. He came out of Eastern Illinois University – also Romo’s alma mater – where he had been the starter since halfway through his freshman year in 2010. He put up respectable numbers, including breaking Romo’s school record for pass completions. In 2014, Garoppolo completed 19 of 27 passes with a touchdown and no interceptions in the six games that he played in for the Pats. A reversal of fortunes for Brady could demote Garoppolo back to clipboard duties, but if it doesn’t happen, he’ll be the most popular guy in New England’s locker room.

A bigger issue for the Pats may be their defense. During the offseason, the secondary lost star defenders Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner and Kyle Arrington, while the line saw the departure of Vince Wilfork, thus turning what was a strength into a potential Achilles heel.

By George Dickie This week’s NFL Kickoff 2015 not only ushers in this year’s regular season but could also serve as a preview of the AFC Championship game. That is, if both participants can resolve a few question marks. The Thursday, Sept. 10, opener on NBC, pits Jimmy Garoppolo and the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots against Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

“I think a lot of pressure is now put on (defensive end) Chandler Jones and some of those guys to really go after the quarterback to help an inexperienced secondary,” Ward says. “You lose both Browner and Revis, I mean, these guys are known to be lockdown guys that were very disruptive in the passing game. Now you’ve got guys who are unproven ... . So it’ll be real interesting to see coach Belichick and how he handles (things).” As for Pittsburgh’s chances this season, the retired Steeler great is excited – but with one qualifier.

Of course, the big question on many observers’ minds is how the Pats will fare without star quarterback Tom Brady, who is suspended for the season’s first four games after failing to cooperate with investigators probing the deflation of footballs during last season’s AFC title game. But while the temporary loss of their offensive leader is difficult, the Pats have done without him before. In 2008, Matt Cassel led the Pats to an 11-5 record after Brady went down for the season with torn knee ligaments.

“They probably have the most experience coming back – as well as the Green Bay Packers – on the offensive side of the ball than any other team in the league,” Ward says. “Defensively, they’re a huge question mark. They drafted all these linebackers high in the draft. No Troy Polamalu (their newly retired star safety), no veteran guys like (retired cornerback) Ike Taylor in the secondary. (Defensive coordinator) Keith Butler takes over now, so it’ll be real interesting to see what they do.

“When you lose a superstar player, sometimes a team rallies around each other and becomes closer,” says Hines Ward, a studio analyst for NBC Sports and a former Steelers wide receiver. “You know, there’s more attention to detail because the other guys have to step up their games. So I’m pretty sure, even though Brady won’t be there, coach (Bill) Belichick is going to get those guys riled up.”

“But it always starts with the front seven on the defensive side of the ball with (defensive end) Cam Heyward and some of those guys,” he continues. “If they can put pressure and allow those linebackers to just play scot free and run sideline to sideline and make plays, maybe I look for Pittsburgh to have a pretty good year.”
