Lehman’s Flynn

has a new job but the same ‘Motive’ in Season 3 By Michael Korb It’s difficult to say if we’re truly in the golden age of strong female characters on television, but one thing is for certain – Kristin Lehman’s portrayal of Detective Angie Flynn is one of the most authentic of the current power players. And viewers can see just how terrific Lehman is as Season 3 of “Motive” premieres Sunday, March 8, on CTV. When Season 2 of the unique procedural “whydunit” ended, Det. Vega (Louis Ferreira) saved Flynn during a fatal shooting and the experience left her doubting her ability to continue to work in homicide. As Season 3 opens a full six months later, viewers find Flynn in a new role within the Metro Police Department – back in uniform as a member of the recruiting department – a self-exile from homicide. But news concerning Vega lures her back to help investigate a case involving his father and the death of a beautiful young socialite, London Montgomery (Jessica Lowndes). However, when she returns, she finds the dynamics of the department have shifted – Det. Lucas (Brendan Penny) is now calling the shots. That’s where Flynn differs from some of the other current female characters dominating shows such as “Scandal” or “How To Get Away With Murder.” “Angie is a fallible character who drives stories,” says Lehman. “She’s real, she eats, she doesn’t pretend to be meek or suffer fools lightly. So I’m proud audiences can experience storytelling with a woman who isn’t trying to be a man. “It’s a pleasure to be me, to be mentioned amongst those other fine female driven shows, actresses and characters,” adds Lehman. “However, unlike many female

driven shows, the main relationship in her life, her partnership with Vega, is not romantic and will not become romantic. That’s an important and meaningful distinction to me.” In fact, at its core, this season’s theme is about Angie and Vega’s ongoing codependency and their intermittent desire to understand their partnership better and understand just what it means to have boundaries. “Louis and I tried to explore where the two characters diverge and where they merge. Ah, the inner lives of workaholics,” says Lehman, with a laugh. “We also have a ‘whydunit’ that carries us all the way from our premiere episode to our finale. It weaves its way through everyone’s work lives.” That’s a new wrinkle for the series, which has prided itself on its stand-alone episodic structure. Regardless, it looks like Flynn will have gained some perspective on her life and partnership with Vega after her time away from homicide. “I love all the places and directions Angie goes,” says Lehman. And this season where she goes she’ll be joined by a cavalcade of outstanding guest stars lined up for this season: Victor Garber, Alexis Bledel, Dylan Walsh, Ally Sheedy, C. Thomas Howell, Chris Kline and Bonnie Somerville, just to name a few.

Can’t live without your phone? There’s a doc(umentary) for that By Michael Korb

We’ve all been there – enjoying a romantic dinner or a sunny day at the beach, just finding the tipping point of happiness and relaxation, when the urge to check our cell phone overcomes us. We’ll just read a few emails. And maybe update our Facebook status. You know, after we tweet and Pin something. Yup, we’ve officially killed our nice day. If that sounds like you – and you know it does – better tune in to “Deluged By Data” premiering as part of “Doc Zone,” Thursday, March 12, on CBC Television. The one-hour documentary by Montreal filmmaker Josh Freed (“The Trouble With Experts,” “Life Below Zero”) exposes our current reality of devouring data at an everincreasing rate, to a point of saturation. The result is a film that is a light-hearted but intelligent look at a group of individuals called “datasexuals,” who are obsessed with raw data. They will stop at nothing to collect as much as possible in what they believe to be righteous attempts to improve their lives through algorithms. But Freed also talks to former data freaks who’ve learned to take regular digital Sabbaths – and even go to special retreats for a digital detox: a summer camp that teaches adults how to reconnect with being disconnected. Yes, it’s gotten that bad. “Some psychologists, especially in California, are now using the word addiction,” says Freed, “though most just say our compulsive data habit has ‘addictive-like qualities.’ But a surprising number of ordinary people we interviewed in their 20s and 30s casually mentioned they

feel ‘addicted’ to their phone – because they get anxious when its not in their pocket or purse. And they like to hold it and fondle it – and even sleep with it.” Chances are you’re not as shocked as you’d like to be. We are a culture of technology and we crave the instant knowledge that comes from our ability to check our phone, our laptops or the devices strapped to our wrists. And Freed deftly dances both sides of the equation by introducing us to people who ask the question: “Will these new devices help crack a formula for success or drive us to distraction?” Along the way we meet people such as Lolly Luck, a Toronto-native who is a self-confessed selfie and Twitter junkie who spends more time on her virtual life than her real life; University of Toronto professor and inventor Steve Mann who might just become the first human cyborg; and Quantified Self member Bob Troia who constantly wears devices to check everything from his blood pressure to his trans-cranial brain wave activity. Each is fascinating in their own way. It’s this type of behavior that has caused some restaurants to actually ban cell phones. The truth is we are spending more time documenting our lives than living them. At least “Deluged By Data” helps us realize we’re not alone in this. Which reminds us, we should send Freed a friend request.

A town deals with its ‘Returned’ in A&E series

By Jay Bobbin What if those you thought were gone weren’t really gone? Several television projects have posed that notion lately, one being ABC’s “Resurrection” ... and another being “The Returned,” a French series based on the movie “Les Revenants” and shown in America by SundanceTV. That story gets its third screen iteration as A&E Network’s Americanization of “The Returned” debuts Monday, March 9, exploring what happens to a town when the victims of a school-bus tragedy start reappearing several years later.

“The Returned” Jeremy Sisto stars in A&E Network’s version of the suspense series “The Returned,” premiering Monday. Story on next page

Executive-produced by “Lost” alum Carlton Cuse – whose “Bates Motel” has its third-season premiere right before “The Returned” begins – and Raelle Tucker (“True Blood”), the new show’s ensemble cast includes Jeremy Sisto (“Law & Order,” “Suburgatory”) as a psychologist who leads a support group for the victims’ survivors. Mark Pellegrino (“Lost”), Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sandrine Holt (“Hostages”), Kevin Alejandro (“True Blood”), Agnes Bruckner, Tandi Wright, Carl Lumbly (“Cagney & Lacey”) and Sophie Lowe (“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland”) also are among the stars. “I love genre things where the characters are way out in front,” Cuse says of giving ”The Returned” a revision. “When Damon (Lindelof) and I were doing ‘Lost,’ people said a lot about the mythology, but we spent far more time in the writers’ room talking about the characters and their journeys. Had it just been a show about mythology, I don’t think it would have been as big a success as it was.” Along those lines, Cuse adds he appreciated the original “Returned” series for its “very high-pulp-concept idea that

Page 6 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote March 8 - 14, 2015

people inexplicably come back from the dead, but the way it was handled was very nuanced. To me, it was sort of the perfect format for doing a character-forward drama, but something that had an eeriness and a mystery that would really compel the audience to see what happens next.” The premise also attracted Sisto, returning to dramatic TV work after three seasons on the ABC sitcom “Suburgatory.” He allows his character has “hidden layers that will be revealed as the show progresses,” which he deems a nice change from his norm of playing someone basically spelled out from the start. “A lot of the shows I’ve been on made it much more clear – a.) what my job was as an actor, and b.) who the character was. This is a kind of experience I haven’t had for a while, since ‘Six Feet Under’ or ‘Kidnapped.’ ” If Sisto is kept guessing about what’s coming next in “The Returned,” Cuse hopes the effect will be the same on viewers – even those familiar with the earlier versions. “In a lot of the ways, it follows the trajectory of the French show for the first five or six episodes,” the producer reports, “then it veers off into its own territory. The French show turns left at Episode 6, and we go right at that same juncture. We’re in virgin territory, charting our own course, and that’s exciting.”

Kevin Bacon keeps

‘Following’ his TV path By Jay Bobbin His character in it may not be having the best of times – as usual – but Kevin Bacon is glad his series still has a following.

Kevin Bacon still has a

‘Following’

Kevin Bacon stars in “The Following” Mondays on Fox.

Story on next page

The actor has just started his third season as exFBI man Ryan Hardy, whose life remains colored by nemeses including serial killer and cult leader Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) in Fox’s Monday suspense drama “The Following.” However, Hardy also has a dose of happiness, thanks to the doctor (played by Zuleikha Robinson) who is his new love interest. “I think he’s trying,” a relaxed Bacon says of Hardy’s stab at joy during a chat at a hotel in Pasadena, Calif. “I like to say that you actually see my teeth this season. He’s in law enforcement, so there are threats and people are going to die. Personally, though, he has convinced himself that he’s moved past Joe Carroll. In a strange way, there’s a kind of love triangle that forms in (Hardy’s) life. There’s this new woman, but it’s almost like Joe is the ex we try not to talk about. “He starts working his way back into Ryan’s life,” Bacon adds, “and the new girlfriend is trying to keep Ryan grounded and with her and present. That doesn’t last for long, though.” Other characters have returned, including Hardy’s copturned-FBI-agent niece Max (Jessica Stroup) and their FBI colleague Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore). Creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson left to focus on his CBS series “Stalker,” and he’s been succeeded in running “The Following” by two of his “really creative

and really smart” hires, says Bacon ... whose wife, “The Closer” Emmy winner Kyra Sedgwick, also is a Fox presence now through her recurring role on the police comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Known for such movies as “Footloose” and “Apollo 13,” Bacon’s pre-“Following” TV experience was sparse, encompassing the daytime serials “Search for Tomorrow” and “Guiding Light” – plus “Taking Chance,” the 2009 HBO movie that earned him a Golden Globe Award. “I didn’t go into this thinking, ‘Well, here I am! I know this is going to be a smash,’ ” he reflects. “We’re just trying to put one foot in front of the other. The first season, having people come to the show and enjoy it was fantastic; being able to get a second, and now a third, I’ve got a lot of gratitude for it. And if it doesn’t work this year, I’ll do something else. My whole career doesn’t depend on it. “On the flip side, I do feel a tremendous amount of responsibility. Every week, you hope people are watching. And if they aren’t right then, maybe they will be in three days or seven days (on their DVRs). There’s constant motion and, like they say, your face is on the poster. I go to work with a lot of optimism, enthusiasm and involvement – and I think we’re making something that’s as good as, if not better than, anything I’ve ever done.”

how he is dealing with the knowledge of who he actually is himself, this internal fight, this struggle that’s always there with the two sides of him. And to view Norman more from that perspective as opposed to his external interactions with other characters, perhaps.”

By George Dickie It’s a dark, rainy day on the set of A&E Network’s “Bates Motel,” an atmosphere that series star Freddie Highmore considers most appropriate for Season 3.

Channeling

the inner Norman Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore star in “Bates Motel,” which begins its third season Monday on A&E Network. Story on next page

“That’s what (the series’ makers) wanted with this third season,” says Highmore, calling in from Vancouver, where the series is shot, “because the second season of ‘Bates,’ I guess, had a slightly cheerier note at the beginning where things seemed to be going well. And then they all switched to return in the winter this year as the darkness has really set in to Norma’s and Norman’s lives.” Season 3, which kicks off Monday, March 9, finds Norman Bates (Highmore) struggling to gain control of his fragile psyche and coming to the realization of what really happened with teacher Blaire Watson. Norma (Vera Farmiga), too, is questioning what is going on with her son’s mental state, which isn’t helped when she becomes closer to her son and his half-brother Dylan (Max Thieriot). The return of her estranged brother Caleb (Kenny Johnson) adds further stresses to the Bateses, as do the arrival of newcomers played by Kevin Rahm (“Mad Men”), Tracy Spiridakos (“Revolution”) and Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”). “I’d say the third season for Norman is a very insular one,” Highmore says. “He starts to home school. He stays back in the hotel, back in the house, doesn’t really move too far away from that as his immediate surroundings. And so we, I guess, get the opportunity to see what’s going on more inside of Norman’s head and his internal processes and

Page 10 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote March 8 - 14, 2015

Still, one character who could set things off internally for Norman is the character of Annika Johnson (Spiridakos), a hooker who checks into the Bates Motel and immediately gets the disturbed teen’s attention. “I think certainly we see her awakening this sexual side of Norman through which a lot of his potential danger comes from,” Highmore says. “And I think that there’s a certain link, not only with the way that Norman sees his mother but the way that he sees other women and how that sexual attraction can then very quickly turn into something a lot more dangerous. And manipulative as well. “I’ve always said that he’s this nice guy and someone that we feel sympathy for and support to some extent and just hope he won’t go down this path that he has to go down,” Highmore continues. “But perhaps in this third season we start to challenge our support for him for the first time and pull back at certain moments. Even if it’s not exactly what we’re wanting to do, you start to think, ‘Well is there a side to Norman that’s doing this on purpose? Or at what point have we gone too far in Norman’s journey that we can’t support him anymore, even if we might want to?’ ”

By George Dickie If there is a theme to the Toronto Raptors’ opponents this week, it might be summed up in one word: danger. DeMar DeRozan and the Raptors face two teams on the playoff bubble and the defending champions in games airing nationally. Sunday, March 8, on TSN2, the Dinos go on the road to Oklahoma City, where they’ll face Kevin Durant and the Thunder, a team picking itself up after being without its two stars, forward Durant and point guard Russell Westbrook, early in the season. The Raptors took advantage of that when they faced the Thunder back on Nov. 4, defeating them, 100-88, at Air Canada Centre. The Raps then head south to San Antonio on Tuesday, March 10, when they drop in on Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs in a game airing on TSN2. The Dinos took it to the reigning champs when these teams met in Toronto on Feb. 8, when James Johnson scored 20 points and DeRozan added another 18 in leading Toronto to an 87-82 victory.

Raptors Story on next page

The Raptors then come home to Air Canada Centre on Friday, March 13, when they face old friend Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat on Sportsnet One. Even without LeBron James, the Heat still managed to find a way to beat the Raptors, defeating them in Miami, 107-102, behind Bosh’s 21 points and 11 rebounds. Japan is the host country this week and next as the world’s top teams come to Sapporo to compete in the 2015 World Women’s Curling Championships. TSN will have coverage of the nine-day tournament from Tsukisamu Gymnasium beginning Saturday, March 14. Twelve teams, including Canada, the United States, Germany, China, Sweden and defending champion Switzerland, will compete in a round-robin format in pursuit of the world title. Last year, Binia Feltscher’s Swiss rink defeated the Canadian squad skipped by Orleans, Ont., native Rachel Homan in the final, 9-5. As the calendar moves toward spring, another auto-racing series, Formula One, comes online this week with the Australian Grand Prix. TSN airs the action late Saturday. A field including Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel, defending race champion Nico Rosberg and 2014 World Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton will take to the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, a relatively flat 16-turn, 5.303-km course encircling Albert Park Lake that drivers find easy to negotiate but difficult to overtake on because of its dearth of straights.

With the caliber of the talent involved, you’d hope “Seventh Son” would yield something better than it ever comes close Actually, the fact that the farmer can see the future is a to doing. plus in his favor, though that still doesn’t mean he’ll be up to the task of fighting the literal femme fatale played by It puts us back on that now-very-familiar fantasy turf where Moore ... who brings her typical conviction to the part, but a novice demon fighter runs up against an ancient demon, she’s nearly upstaged by the CGI around her, and more with the sound and the fury ultimately being too overblown than once. for you to care much about anyone in the film – and with Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore and special-effects veteran There’s a sort of perverse humor to Bridges’ performance, John Dykstra (“Star Wars”) involved, that’s not a happy but it’s likely that’s accidental rather than intentional.
