nother year is in the record books for the athletic programs at Del Norte High School. From football in the fall to track and field in the spring, Warrior athletes and teams gave fans a host of memories. The gridiron squad made the playoffs and earned a dramatic double-overtime win over rival Eureka. Senior slot receiver Brandon Kakitsuka was named Big 3 Conference offensive MVP. In the winter, the boys basketball team earned a share of the Big 5 Conference title and had a playoff win, led by high-scoring Nick McBride, the Big 5 MVP. In track and field, junior shot putter Morgan Laney earned a berth at state. Here is a recap of the 20102011 seasons.
FALL SPORTS FOOTBALL

VOLLEYBALL The Del Norte High volleyball squad may have had an incredible streak snapped, but finished the year on a high note. For 21 straight seasons the squad won or shared a conference title. The streak ended as the Warriors finished second in the Big 5 Conference to McKinleyville with a 5-3 league record, 10-12 overall. In the last game of the season against McKinleyville, the Warriors earned a gritty five-match win at home. The team was coached by Pablo and Debbie Lorenzi, who had coached off and on since the early 1980s and were a crucial part of the Warriors’ remarkable streak. “I’m just happy with ending the season like this,” Debbie Lorenzi said after the McKinleyville game. “We went out with a bang.” The Lorenzis decided to step down after the season ended. Junior Keirstyn Anderson and senior Vanessa Alexandre earned first-team White Star honors for the Warriors. Honorable mention honors went to seniors Kristyn Rook and Brilynn Welch.
Del Norte’s varsity football team bounced back from three early losses to earn a berth in the Northcoast Section playoffs, as well as a huge upset of conference rival Eureka. YEARBOOK GIRLS GOLF
On May 13 in Crescent City at the HumboldtDel Norte Conference Championships, the Warrior girls took the top spot with 131.5 points, while the boys came in third. Robyn Parker, in her first year, led the squad as head coach.
Junior Sydney Benson shot under 100 for the first time in her career in the final regular season match and earned a berth in the Northcoast Section Division 1 Golf Qualifier. Benson placed eighth overall in the HumboldtDel Norte Conference, one place away from qualifying for a White Star. As a team, Del Norte earned its best score of the season in the final match of the year, finishing with a score of 587. The head girls golf coach was Cris Rice.
BASEBALL A promising start did not end the way the baseball team had hoped for this season. Weather played havoc as rain delayed or canceled about 10 games. The rain was so bad that Del Norte was able to go outside only about once a week the first month of practices. Still, the Warriors were playing well when they did play. They were 7-4 overall after a 4-3 home win in nine innings against McKinleyville on May 2. Two days later they downed Fortuna to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference and were only a game out of first place. But things did not go well the rest of the way as Del Norte lost its last seven games, ending the season 4-8 in the Big 5 and 8-11 overall. Senior Layton O’Reilley earned first-team White Star honors. Warriors receiving honorable mention honors were Barrett McClaflin, Nathan Porter and Travis Stacey, The squad was coached by Pablo Lorenzi.
BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER The boys varsity soccer team finished the season 8-7-1 under first-year head coach David Sanyaolu. The JV boys team finished the season 7-0-1, which bodes well for the future. Jamie Ramirez and Zach Bloyd received Big 4 Conference White Star first-team honors. Honorable mention honors went to Moises Molina, Mark Standring, Martin Ramirez, Tanner Walker, Ian Roy and Colby Japp. The Warrior girls soccer squad ended the season 1-15. Senior Lindsey Olson and junior Molly Lambert both earned first-team Big 4 White Star honors. Lydsay Veerkamp, Hannah Dykes and Hailey Hulse all earned honorable mention accolades. The head coach was Clar Byers.

WINTER SPORTS BOYS BASKETBALL The boys basketball team burned up the court. After finishing the prior season with a losing record, the Warriors bounced back and earned a co-chare of the Big 5 title and finished the season with a 216 record. Del Norte also earned a Northcoast Section basketball win at home and played tough against one of the best teams in the state before falling in a home playoff matchup. The Warriors looked strong before Big 5 play began, losing only two games. They faced a challenge in the conference from defending champion Arcata, who defeated them twice in the regular season, including the regular season finale to cause a tie in the Big 5. The teams met again the next night in Arcata for a tiebreaker rematch that would decide the top seed in the Dick Nicali postseason tournament and who would earn the automatic berth in the NCS playoffs. With the Tigers clinging to a 2-point lead after three quarters, Del Norte clamped down on defense, allowing Arcata only 5 fourth-quarter points to come away with a 41-36 win on Feb. 14. While the Warriors lost the Nicali title game to the Tigers, they bounced back in the division III NCS playoffs. Earning the No. 8 seed, they faced No. 9 seed Moreau Catholic of Hayward at home Feb, 23. The Warriors played well from the start and downed the Mariners 64-57. “This is an historic win,” head coach Scott Alexander said after the game. Del Norte faced a tough opponent in the second round in Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, the defending Division III NCS champ, which made it all the way to the state title game and featured two highly regarded Division 1 prospects. The contest was played in Crescent City, and Del Norte took a quick 5-0 lead before the Dragons roared to a 66-44 victory. Leading the way this season was senior shooting guard Nick McBride, who could score from anywhere on the court. He averaged about 21 points per game and nearly 24 per contest in the Big 5, including a 41-point effort Jan. 30 at home against McKinleyville. McBride was named Big 5 MVP. Joining him on the first team was senior point guard Layton O’Reilley, an excellent defender and a team leader

who could find the open man and keep things humming. He averaged nearly 6 assists per game. Jalen Coney, a senior post player who did not even play basketball the prior season, gave the Warriors a key presence inside. He averaged nearly 10 rebounds and 10 points per game and also earned White Star honors. Senior Brandon Kakitsuka and junior Collin Taylor received honorable mention honors. McBride and Coney recently accepted offers to play basketball at College of the Redwoods in Eureka. Alexander, who led the Warriors for three years, moved to Redding after the season.
WRESTLING With a young team featuring five freshmen starters, the wrestling team had a solid season. Del Norte went a perfect 8-0 in the HumboldtDel Norte Conference, ending the regular season by defeating previously undefeated Eureka at home 58-23. At the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference Championships, which Del Norte hosted, the Warriors took second overall. A total of eight grapplers qualified for the Northcoast Section Championships by placing third or higher. Jordan Lacy (135 pounds), Barrick Sala (215) and Isaac Terry at heavyweight all came in first and earned White Star honors. Sala and Terry won all their matches by fall. This was the second HDN title for Sala, who won one as a freshman. Despite missing several matches this season due to illness, Sala dominated when healthy. At the NCS, he made it to the seventh-place match, but had to forfeit due to an injury. He had hyperextended his shoulder the week before. “He wrestled five matches and was hurting pretty good by the finals,” head coach Aaron Schaad said. “He wasn’t at 100 percent. Taking eighth place was a good showing when you’re injured.” Lacy, who came into the NCS ranked third, lost his first match and came back to win four straight matches and made it to the final day. The next day he lost in his first contest to miss placing in the NCS by one match.
GIRLS BASKETBALL It was a rebuilding season for the girls basketball
team. Del Norte finished 6-15 overall and 1-7 in the Big 5 Conference with an inexperienced squad that showed potential. In the last home game of the season the Warriors upset Big 5 rival Fortuna. The Warriors had only three seniors. Two of them were starters in Kristyn Rook and Casey Walch. Sophomore Brittany Maready led the charge for the younger players as she led the team in scoring with about 12 points per game. She earned Big 5 Conference first-team White Star honors. Rook and Walch earned honorable mention honors. The head coach was Buzz McCulloch.
SPRING SPORTS TRACK AND FIELD It was a successful season for the track and field team. The girls squad won the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference and eight athletes made it to the Northcoast Section Meet of Champions in Berkeley, one step away from qualifying for state. Junior Morgan Laney threw a personal best shot put mark in Berkeley on May 27 to take second overall and earn a berth at the state championship in Clovis. On her last attempt, Laney had a throw of 39-08.50. At state, Laney finished 16th out of 24 participants. The Warriors brought a total of eight participants to Berkeley, the most in a few years. Senior Brandon Kakitsuka earned a berth in the 300-meter hurdles. He took sixth on the first day in Berkeley to qualify for the finals the next day. Kakitsuka finished fifth and narrowly missed earning a berth at state. Other Warriors who made it to Berkeley included Kylee Bruder in the high jump and Nichole Fugate in the 100-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay team. Zara Gastineau was also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team. Jennifer Goacher qualified for three events, the 100-meter dash the 200-meter dash and the 4x400meter relay team. Adan Rodriguez earned a berth in the pole vault. Katelynn Rowe qualified in the 400-meter dash and as a member of the 4x400-meter team.
With a young team, it was a learning season for the Warriors softball squad, which finished 3-8 in the Big 5 and 6-15 overall. Weather also caused major problems for the softball team, with about 10 games delayed or canceled. A highlight was a victory over Arcata in the second game of a home doubleheader 5-4 on May 14. Down 4-3 in the seventh inning, the Warriors came back for the victory. Senior Kristyn Rook earned first-team White Star honors. Chandler Davis, Sarah Weiser, Lindsey Olson and Keirstyn Anderson earned honorable mentions accolades. The team was led by head coach Jackie Heuberger.
BOYS GOLF The Del Norte boys golf team had one of its best performances in several years, taking second in the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference and having two golfers qualify for the Northcoast Section Tournament of Champions in Contra Costa On May 16. Senior James Morrow finished with a 77 while fellow senior Luke Polidore shot a 90 in Contra Costa. To get to this point both qualified at the Northcoast Section Division I qualifier at the Sunol Valley Golf Club in the Bay Area. Polidore shot a 78 and Morrow finished with a score of 80. Head coach Kirk Burrows said at the time that this was the first time in his 10 years as golf coach that two Warriors qualified for the NCS championship in the same year. “We’re pleased for these two,” Burrows said. Polidore finished the year in second place overall in the HDN and was only two shots behind the top placer.
BOYS TENNIS The boys tennis team finished the regular season in second place in the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference with a 9-3 record. Oscar Ko won the No. 5 singles title. He defeated Jeff Ahao of St. Bernard’s 6-1, 6-6, (10) in his third match of the day. “Oscar had a long day of match play and I thought he held his game together very well,” Del Norte head coach Sara Miller said.
