By Jay Bobbin Pictured:David Hasselhoff

Los Angeles had one, then New York. Now, the warning is up for Washington, D.C.: A “Sharknado” is in the forecast. You could insert your own joke here, but Syfy likely has it covered as its campy, popular horror-movie franchise continues with “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” Wednesday, July 22. Not only will America get to see sharks drop from the sky onto U.S. landmarks (and eventually onto Florida, as the crisis moves along the East Coast), so will much of the rest of the world, since the picture will premiere that night on Syfy channels in 86 countries. “It kind of just makes sense now,” says Ian Ziering, the “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum who has found renewed television fame as chainsaw-wielding shark-fighter Fin. “Syfy is rolling out a new way to present what’s almost a series. It’s become a summer event for them. Based on ratings, of course – like everything else – if this continues to do well, I’m pretty sure they’ll continue this summer tradition of ‘Sharknados.’ ” Noting the worldwide debut of “Sharknado 3,” recent “Celebrity Apprentice” player Ziering hopes future chapters take him to foreign shores. “If I’m going to spend 15 (filming) days running and gunning,” he reasons, “it would be nice to do it in a location that’s somewhat exotic. This was made popular by the people, so I think it would only get better if we started bringing it to the people out there. There’s global anticipation for this.” The latest “Sharknado” introduces Fin’s father, an astronaut played by someone with quite a following overseas: “Baywatch” and “Knight Rider” veteran David Hasselhoff, who’s pleased to add a battle against sharks

to “Piranha” and “Anaconda” sequels he’s made. He says he worried he’d have to turn it down due to aftereffects of a knee operation, “and I could hardly walk. And they said, “ ‘It’s OK. You can still do the show, because you’re going to be in outer space!’ ” Hasselhoff had to refuse the offer of a “Sharknado 2” cameo earlier because of another commitment that ultimately evaporated. “Then, boom! I get the call again” for a role in “Sharknado” No. 3. “And I said, ‘You know what? I’m not really interested in doing a cameo.’ They called me back and said, ‘We have this really cool idea of you playing Fin’s father.’ And they were going to pay me some money, so I went, ‘Great!’ ” Tara Reid and Cassie Scerbo also reprise their roles from earlier “Sharknados,” with “10” icon Bo Derek as Reid’s mother – and, as with “Sharknado 2,” an army of familiar faces in cameos. Among them: Penn & Teller, Jerry Springer, “Today” co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, former “Incredible Hulk” Lou Ferrigno, Frankie Muniz (“Malcolm in the Middle”), wrestler Chris Jericho, and expoliticians Michele Bachmann and Anthony Weiner. And, as the U.S. president and vice president, Mark Cuban (of the appropriately titled “Shark Tank”) and political commentator Ann Coulter. Director Anthony C. Ferrante and writer Thunder Levin also are back for “Sharknado 3,” and Ziering muses that by now, “Everybody gets it. Everybody but the actors, and that’s what the fun is. Everyone is in on the joke but the people in the movie, and you enjoy it for what it is.”

CELEBRITY Jay Bobbin’s Q&A

JeffreyDeanMorgan of ‘Extant’ on CBS

“Extant” is only one of your television projects this year, since you also were seen recently in “Texas Rising” and “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe.” Do you have to turn down a lot of work because of scheduling? Yeah, I say “no” to a lot. I recently had four offers within seven days. I don’t even read the scripts sometimes. I’ve had such a crazy run. The last yearand-half has been all jobs away from home, and when you have a family – especially a five-year-old boy – it’s time to take a break. If I’m going to do a television show, it’s important that I stay closer to home or figure out a way to get home more often. When I took “Extant,” the deal was, “We’ll get you home as much as possible.” That just hasn’t worked out, mostly because I’ve also had press obligations ... but Hilarie (Burton, Morgan’s fiancee and the mother of their son) got a job on “Extant,” which was great. Early on, you were part of the mythology built by “Supernatural.” Do you have thoughts of returning to that show? That’s a show I haven’t done in 10 years, but my hope and their hope is that before it comes to an end, John Winchester will make an appearance. I would love to do it not only for the fans, but because I love those two kids (series stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki); I call them “kids,” though they’re obviously not. I’m in contact with them quite a bit and they’ve become very good friends, and I would love to be there before that show takes its final bow and do my part to say goodbye.

CELEBRITY George Dickie’s Q&A

C

KitHarington of ‘7 Days in Hell’ on HBO “7 Days in Hell” looks hilarious. Was it fun to make? Yeah (laughs). When I got it, it was a very kind of quick thing. I got it when I was in L.A. and I read it and it just made me crack up on paper. And they said, “Look, we’ve got a very short amount of time to shoot this and we’d love you to come be a part of it and we’d love for you to consider it.” And I said, “Yes” because it was a no-brainer for me. It was really funny. So did shooting this take fewer than seven days? Yeah (laughs), my whole part of this. I think in total it was probably shot over longer because of all the talking heads that they had to get. But the actual bulk of the action was shot in three days, which is really farcical if you think about it. How would you describe your character of dimwitted tennis champion Charles Poole? He’s more than dimwitted; he’s like really, really stupid. He just doesn’t function on a basic level. And I think the idea behind it is he’s been brought up by this overcontrolling mother – sort of slight comparisons to be made to Andy Murray. And he just sort of grew up with tennis and has no idea about anything else. He had no formal education. So he’s an idiot, really. And they’ve kind of nicely opposed the two characters. He’s very polite – overly polite and sweet and I think you should like him. And Andy’s character is just the biggest a... . I think roughly Andy’s character is like based on John McEnroe, just very boisterous and angry on the court. And mine’s slightly – not really Andy Murray, because he’s not, but with the overcontrolling mother he might be.

CELEBRITY George Dickie’s Q&A

of ‘BOOM!’ on Fox For someone who makes his living thinking on his feet, “BOOM!” had to be a gold mine of comic possibilities, no? That’s a good observation. When I’m looking to do these shows, it’s basically, “Can I make these things funny? Can I be funny doing it?” And the idea that there’s going to be all this tension of somebody trying to win this money and then the possibility of them standing there on national TV covered in slime (laughs), something like Wile E. Coyote’s slime bomb exploding, I knew we didn’t have to go very far to make that funny. ... There’s a reason why great comedians like Steve Harvey and Drew Carey and Howie Mandel end up hosting these shows because it kind of calls on all your skills as a comic. ... And those moments, when you can just be off the cuff and just ripping and letting things happen, in a lot of ways it becomes the most electric part of the set. And that’s where these hosting jobs – the whole thing is at. When these slime bombs go off, do you get hit? I do my best to get out of the way but I literally heard in my earpiece the producers going, “We’ve got to make these bombs bigger. We’ve got to hit Papa.” And from that point on, it really became a game between myself and the producer and the crew who were making these big devices – they were always trying to get me, I was trying to leave. I was successful part of the time but I literally went through 20 suits in the filming of the show. Were they washable? There were a lot of suits that were just bagged up and thrown in the trash. These bombs are huge and they stain. They’re filled with disgusting mashed-potatoes stuff and guacamole.

FOOD George Dickie’s What's for Dinner

F

JJ Johnson

What book are you currently reading? “I’m actually reading (Sean Brock’s cookbook) ‘Heritage.’ ”

I

What did you have for dinner last night? “I was in the line at the restaurant. I had our panroasted halibut with our citrus jerk, fonio and celery root puree.”

What is your next project? “Cookingwise, it would be doing James Beard’s Chefs & Champagne in July. And the next project that I’ve been working on is I just became the chef at our sister restaurant Minton’s ... .”

When was the last vacation you took, where and why? “The last vacation I took, I went to Belize. The last culinary vacation I took I was cooking in Ghana ... .”

Esquire series goes in search of ‘The Next Great Burger’

n JJ Johnson’s mind, everyone believes they make a better burger than the next guy or gal, and that idea is behind Esquire Network’s new competition series “The Next Great Burger.” “The burger, we feel, kind of makes us who we are,” explains the New Yorkbased chef and restaurateur. “Anybody can make a burger but making a great burger is a different thing.” Premiering Tuesday, July 21, the series pits three contestants in what amounts to a burger-cooking contest. In the first round, hosts Johnson and Owen Benjamin sample the cuisine and eliminate one chef. The remaining two then square off against each other with the crowd sampling the fare and determining the outcome. The winner gets $25,000 and the distinction of having created “The Next Great Burger.”

And these burgers are not limited to just beef. Some contestants used ground pork, others ground chorizo (Portuguese sausage) and one drizzled a lobster bearnaise sauce over the top of his creation. And then, of course, there was something called “the energy burger,” which was based on an energy shake.

“You’ll see people forget to season their burger meat because this hot girl was standing in front of them and he’s trying to impress her,” Johnson says. “Or the crowds are chanting back and forth because the left side of the room really loves Marvin’s burger and the right side of the room is really loving this girl that’s killing it doing things that they never saw before. So you have “(The contestant) then created that and this effect of the crowd that also plays put it on the burger,” Johnson says, a major role in how people cook. “so he did like blueberry, mayonnaise, spinach – all these crazy ingredients “It’s like an arena,” he continues. that went in the blender that he would “The funniest part about it, you would drink after he worked out, he then see this nerdy guy behind there just threw that on top of his burger.” cooking a burger and this hot blond chick with blue eyes talking to him and Factoring into the action is the beerhe would just lose track. And I would fired crowd, which not only judges the say to Owen, ‘You see? I told you the creations and determines the winners crowd’s a factor.’ ” but also interacts with the chefs and hosts on stage. And that can prove distracting.

James Wolk

It’s a safe bet James Wolk will leave this summer with a deeper respect for animals. The owner of a Shepherd-Rottweiler mix, the “Mad Men” and “The Crazy Ones” alum is dealing instead with lions and tigers – and he’d be the first to add, “Oh, my” – in “Zoo,” CBS’ weekly Tuesday adaptation of the suspense novel co-written by mystery icon James Patterson. The actor admits to being somewhat amazed at landing the role of Jackson Oz, a zoologist turned African tour guide whose expertise on other creatures puts him at the forefront of probing why they’re suddenly attacking humans. “The show has actually taken that seed and gone in a lot of different directions under (Patterson’s) go-ahead and blessing,” the friendly Wolk says. “A TV show does have that opportunity. I started with the book and then read the script, and there’s an amazing group of writers and producers on this (including Patterson himself). I jumped at the chance to be a part of it.” Praising the handlers and trainers who work on “Zoo” for ensuring the safety of the show’s cast and crew, Wolk muses, “You literally can’t get any more animals in one project. It takes patience with them ... and respect for them. And they’re amazing; whatever we need them to do, they do. I mean, they’re not actors. They’re animals.” Much of “Zoo” has been shot in New Orleans, a big bonus for Wolk: “It’s a beautiful city, with culture and restaurants and tons of great watering holes. When you’re not shooting, there’s plenty to do, and the people are just very kind. There’s a Southern hospitality there. It’s a great place to hang your hat and shoot a series or a film.” Page 8 YOUR TV LINK Courtesy of Gracenote July 19 - 25, 2015

This year, I was able to spend some time with Jensen (Ackles) and Jared (Padalecki) and some of the gang; I went and did my very first convention, and I had no idea how crazy their fan base is! And it’s literally still growing.”

– Jeff Foxworthy of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” on Fox, about getting feedback on his stand-up comedy “The audience is always right, so I would just go to local clubs with my note cards and say, ‘Hey, I need your help. Is this funny or not funny?’ Thankfully, I’ve been doing it long enough where I would say, ‘Is it just not funny, or was it that you didn’t understand what I was talking about?’ ”

– Kyra Sedgwick, executive producer of “Proof” on TNT, about why she isn’t also starring in the new series “I really didn’t want to go back to doing an hour show, and that’s why doing ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ has been so much fun. It’s in-and-out and it’s a half-hour and it’s light. STORY

Ryan Seacrest

is ‘a little bit nervous’ about knocking on doors for new Fox show By Jay Bobbin The next knock on your door could represent someone who wants to fulfill your greatest wish: Ryan Seacrest. As he readies for the final season of “American Idol,’’ the multimedia host and producer is supplying Fox with a new franchise as the series “Knock Knock Live’’ premieres Tuesday, July 21. While Seacrest remains based in Los Angeles, several co-hosts -- including “Idol” alum Kellie Pickler and former “Tonight Show” correspondent Ross Mathews -- fan out across the U.S. to surprise various people by giving each exactly what they’ve been hoping for. In some cases, that involves meeting celebrities such as Lea Michele (“Glee”) and music stars Luke Bryan and Meghan Trainor. “It’s about celebrating great, exceptional people with amazing prizes,” Seacrest explains. “It could be cash, it could be a car, it could be a house. We want to find some couple, some person, some kid and change their life ... and we have the opportunity to do that with largescale prizes, but to me, the show is about the story of the person. It could be a small ask that could turn into a large payoff.” People are able to nominate wish recipients, or apply for themselves, via the show’s social media and at the website www.knocknocklive.com. Of the submissions he’s seen, Seacrest says they represent “a total cross-section from east to west. We’re looking for the best stories that make great TV, and the fact that it’s live will add to the excitement.”

S

It also will add to another emotion, since Seacrest allows, “I’m a little bit nervous about this. You don’t know quite what will happen when you knock on that door.” Admittedly, Seacrest will be removed from the actual sites, “but the idea is to toss back to the studio so we can tell the stories together, and to have amazing spontaneous moments. Hopefully, there are tears of joy.” “Knock Knock Live” was inspired, Seacrest notes, by something he’s long been doing on his nationally syndicated weekday “On Air” radio show. “People give somebody a hundred bucks, and it changes their lives. Five hundred bucks definitely does ... and $10,000 really does. The idea is just to do great things for people who deserve it.” A corollary idea behind “Knock Knock Live” is for Seacrest to stay in business with Fox. Very active on the producing side of television with such other shows as E!’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and NBC’s upcoming drama “Shades of Blue” – starring “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez – Seacrest admits he’s still trying to wrap his mind around the 15-season run of “Idol,” the venture that brought him widespread fame, ending next year. “I knew it was coming at some point,” he says, “but after the announcement, I was emotional about it. It’s been such a part of my life for so many years. The idea was to do ‘Knock Knock Live’ between (the last two) ‘Idols’ so that if it takes off, we’ve got a job. And if not, it hopefully will have been a fun summer show that did a lot of good things for cool people.”

Spike’s ‘Tut’ spins a

S

tale of jealousy, duplicity and heroism By George Dickie

His life lasted only 19 years but Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun lived one fuller than men who lived four times as long. Spike TV’s three-night, six-hour miniseries “Tut” gives epic treatment to the life of the boy king who lived 3,300 years ago. Premiering Sunday, July 19, it tells the story of the slight, sickly boy who became ruler at age 9 following the murder of his father, was forced to marry his sister to maintain the bloodline and dynasty, fell for a commoner in a romance he tried to conceal from the jealous queen, determined who within his regime were his allies and who weren’t, and led his countrymen to victory over invading Mitanni forces. Avan Jogia (“Victorious,” “Twisted”) stars as Tut, with Oscar winner Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi”) as his manipulative close adviser Vizier Ay, Nonso Anozie (“The Grey”) as the formidable and duplicitous Gen. Horemheb, Sibylla Deen (“Tyrant”) as Queen Ankhe and Kylie Bunbury as Tut’s lover, Suhad.

Pictured: Ben Kingsley “And (he was) more ruthless than most,” he continues, “and I think that kind of ruthlessness germinates slowly and he starts to slowly kind of build into the kind of leader that he ends up being at the end of it, which is cold, calculating, ruthless but still all of it out of this kind of need to free his people from subjugation from this kind of like polytheistic priesthood. It’s the story of this boy becoming a man but also the story of someone’s resounding will moving forward.” The story was filmed in Morocco between August and December of last year, and Kingsley credits the African nation’s stark desert landscape with helping everyone get into their characters.

The production paints a picture of someone who was far wiser than his limited years, and Jogia says for him that started with Tut’s extraordinary will.

“There is you and the sky in the desert,” he says, “so it’s quite good not to go back to city clutter and distractions of city life, wherever the studio might be.”

“His will to not be forgotten by time, his will to conquer enemies outside of his borders and to solidify his throne by conquering his enemies within ...,” the 23-year-old Canadian actor explains. “He was not born into a world that I was born into, of two loving parents and all these opportunities and all this choice to do what I wanted to. He was born to responsibility and blood. He grew up in a very violent era ... and a lot of responsibilities have been thrust upon him. And so yeah, by 19 years old he’s lived a larger life.”

“But to drive through a landscape that probably hasn’t changed much in 2,000 years and be with the kinds of people over whom the pharaohs ruled, who haven’t changed a lot in many years, it’s a wonderful, intact and proud culture and I like being with those people. You feel secure amongst people who are proud and dignified and strong. It’s a lovely feeling, a great place to film, certainly.”

STORY

By George Dickie Take nine couples with no construction skills, stick them in the pea soup-like heat and humidity of Atlanta, and watch as they attempt to renovate what could become their dream home – all under tutelage of expert contractor Mike Holmes. That’s the formula of the latest Fox competition series “Home Free,” premiering Wednesday, July 22. In each of the eight hourlong episodes, Holmes (“Holmes on Homes”) mentors these do-it-yourselfers as he challenges them with various construction projects at different homes around the city. Those with the best work advance in the competition while those who didn’t perform up to code are eliminated. And in a surprising twist, all must live 24/7 on the job site. “They are completely just working on the house all day and sometimes up until 2 in the morning,” Holmes explains from the 100-degree heat of the Georgia capital. “They drop in the trailer, they get up and do it again. Every five days we complete a house, give it to a deserving family, one couple is eliminated and we move on to the next build.”

All of the eight homes chosen for the first season are in good neighborhoods but were in varying degrees of disrepair. All had been abandoned and sold on the cheap, some had foundation and roof issues, while nearly all needed new kitchens and bathrooms. “This house here,” Holmes says from a job site, “was falling apart inside and out and it appeared that a house of hoarders lived in it. That’s what it appears anyway. There was so much crap left inside that one of their drill-down challenges from the beginning was to clean the job site up ... . They had to pull out 750 pounds worth of stuff.” Coming in, none of the couples had much in the way of skills. The only requirement of them was to absorb Holmes’ instruction and correctly perform the tasks. Some, he says, were better than others and a few were inspired to try projects on their own. “Everyone, I think, is coachable,” Holmes says, “especially by me because I’m going to show them how to do something. If they pay attention, listen and watch, odds are they’re going to learn from it and grow.”

Joan Collins

picks a night’s worth of TCM movies By Jay Bobbin

If Joan Collins got to choose an evening of movies, it would include one of her own ... and it does. Featured lately on the E! series “The Royals,” the former “Dynasty” diva becomes Turner Classic Movies’ latest “Guest Programmer” as she joins channel staple Robert Osborne all night Wednesday, July 22. On her list: Rita Hayworth in “Gilda” (1946); Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy and Claudette Colbert in “Boom Town” (1940); a powerhouse female cast including Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell in the 1939 classic “The Women”; and “The Opposite Sex,” Collins’ own 1956 remake of “The Women,” also starring June Allyson and Ann Miller. “Early on, we had this idea” to feature guest co-hosts, Osborne explains. “The first one was Stephen Sondheim, but we couldn’t get him on camera. Then we had Bill Cosby, and he did it on camera and was great, so we’ve had everybody on camera since then.” However, Osborne admits, “It took us a little while to find a format. We started asking people to come on, and most were delighted and came up with really good suggestions. We asked them to pick their favorite movies, but also to pick

a couple they had discovered that maybe most people didn’t know. By their coming on, it would introduce people to those movies, and that worked out particularly well.” That is, until a couple of “very famous guests who shall go nameless” clearly hadn’t seen movies they picked, notes Osborne. “We realized we really couldn’t do this unless people let us know they wanted to. I was in a movie theater one time and Whoopi Goldberg came over and said, ‘I love that channel! I watch it all the time.’ We invited her on, and she was great. And that was how we first got to know Sally Field (Osborne’s current Saturday co-host on TCM’s ‘The Essentials’).” The same applies to Collins, a longtime personal friend of Osborne, though her husband made the pitch to him. “I find it fascinating that someone with such beauty and charisma would be so enamored of Rita Hayworth and (‘Boom Town’ co-star) Hedy Lamarr,” Osborne reflects. “And it threw me that she picked both ‘The Women’ and her version of it. I just think it’s terribly interesting to hear why they like, or don’t like, a movie and why it’s worth seeing.”

By Dan Ladd Jordan Spieth is on a roll, make no mistake about it. The winner of both the 2015 Masters Tournament and most recently, the U.S Open in June, the young golfer from Dallas will try for a third straight major title Sunday, July 19, on ESPN, in the final round of the 2015 Open Championship, which takes place at The Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland, where the tournament hasn’t been held since 2010. After a record-setting performance at Augusta in April, where he donned his first green jacket, Spieth added a U.S. Open victory to his short but growing list of titles a month ago. The victory landed him at the top of both the FedEx Cup points standings and the money list. His three wins were also the most up to that point of the 2015 PGA Tour. Spieth, who will turn 22 later this month, dropped out of college halfway through his sophomore year at the University of Texas in 2012 after winning a national championship there during his freshman year. He turned professional and took the 2013 Rookie of the Year honors.

Winning in Scotland will not be easy. The Old Course at St. Andrews is just that, one of the oldest in the history of golf. Still, one less challenge for Spieth will be the fact that defending champion Rory McIlroy will miss the tournament due to an injury. His growing rivalry with Spieth will have to wait.

Pixar turns growing up

‘Inside Out’ It isn’t hard to figure out why the Pixar animation studio has been so successful: It makes giant adventures out of the most common things.

The tale’s heroine is youngster Riley (voice of Kaitlyn Dias), who has moved to San Francisco with her parents (voices of Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan) and is having a tough time adjusting to her new environs. “WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS”

Top Pick

Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) is a triple threat as co-writer, co-director and co-star of this send-up of both documentaries and horror movies that also makes him something of a threat in another sense. He, Taika Waititi (the picture’s other writer-director) and Jonathan Brugh play vampires followed by cameras as they try to assimilate into ordinary daily life, which finds them experiencing roommate complications and being turned away at nightclub entrances. Amid such complications, it’s remarkable they have enough focus left to prey upon humans for their blood. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
