T
he personal side of cycling holidays.
Every year I am very fortunate and am able to join Wild Rock Travel’s cycling trips all over the world. As the years have passed, I have been privileged to witness and be a part of many formative experiences with some incredible personalities. Some of these experiences have been with some of the most humble cyclists. 10 years ago the middle aged wife of a very avid cyclist joined us on a cycling trip to Mallorca. She tentatively explored the island with us in pristine white sneakers on an entry level hybrid. Over the next decade she has come to multiple trips to Mallorca (Spain), Tuscany & Dolomites (Italy), French Alps and Spanish Pyrenees. I have shared at least 5,000km of my life with this fine couple and they are now both extremely accomplished and experienced cyclists in the mountains. It has been a fantastic experience to be part of. When it comes to inspiring stories I will always look up to a retired judge from Ottawa who joined us for a week. In her late sixties or early seventies she joined us for a cycling holiday. Holding her own on the shorter rides with cyclists 20 years younger on the last day she challenged my wife Kathy to take her on a ride. She wanted to do a ride where in her words “When we are done I want it to have been hard enough I don’t want to see my bike seat for at least a week!” The next day she and Kathy climbed to the LLuc Monastery in Mallorca, Spain. This 75km route had almost 1000m of vertical gain. People like this give me serious inspiration to keep moving and try new things.
Speaking of standout inspirations, I want a 70th birthday like the following. A gentleman on our French Alps trip a couple of year ago celebrated his 70th birthday by climbing the Croix de Fer and the Col de Glandon on his birthday! I would consider it a fabulous success to do half of this on my 70th. Enough of the riding. More than ½ of the drive to keep researching, organizing and leading trips comes from the time spent off the bike. The candid conversations at meals sharing stories, experiences challenges, tragedies and laughs keep me grounded and have added huge amounts of wisdom to my life. There is really no better way to unplug and hit the hard reset as a day spent exercising with stunning views and then sharing a great meal and wine with new friends. A bottle of wine during a Tuscan sunset is a “reboot” like no other. It gives you time to crystalizes your priorities and goals. For most people they return with the aim to do a better job at trying to do LESS! Of course it is not all roses and unicorns. Kieran and I have shared some pretty arduous adventures in the mountains. Rain, snow, wind and wicked routes have been endured and then edited before we take clients. These days of freezing in the snow pre-riding routes are memorable but for all the wrong reasons. Watching snow collect on your forearms and quads while climbing the Gavia is not a day you will forget.
Thankfully athletic amnesia makes you look back at moments like that with fondness. In hindsight the cycling adventures I am able to take part in are less about pure cycling and more about placing myself in an environment where there is better chance of deep experience. I have gained wisdom on how I want to live my next years through exposure to some extremely great people. I have learned to be more of an optimist and better planner by surviving epic rides in horrific conditions. I have developed deep friendships and grit while riding torturous routes in the company of new friends. Finally I have learned that life is short and the only way to make it longer is to slow down and enjoy the day. Nobody in their twilight years wished they had worked more, had a faster car or bigger house; they seem to have wished they travelled more and spent more time with family and friends. These are the lessons that Wild Rock Travel have taught me. I hope health and good decisions keep me in a position to share the cycling adventures we have on the plate for the next 20 years. Wild Rock is now a fully licensed travel retailer and wholesaler. Our trip offerings will expand a great deal in the next 24 months. Keep your eyes peeled for updates.
