Bathed in the soft glow of a setting sun, a striking adult Boreal Owl peers intently downward in search of an early evening meal. Measuring less than one foot in height, this diminutive resident of our northernmost coniferous forests is a fierce hunter thanks to specially-adapted wing feathers that are virtually silent in flight. While generally favoring a nocturnal lifestyle, the Boreal Owl is sometimes forced to hunt in twilight due to the Arctic’s short summertime nights. Talented Wild Wings artist Jim Rataczak beautifully portrays this rarely-seen raptor quietly perched among the evergreen branches of the remote boreal forest it calls home.
