I
No meatballs, capellini or Caeser salad at Gia, just fine Italian dining in a Tuscan atmosphere
must admit my downfall is Italian food. If I were to have that proverbial final meal it would be without question spaghetti and meatballs. That said, I was not disappointed that Gia Ristorante didn’t serve my favorite dish. The menu more than made up for the elusive meatball. Gia is the brainstorm of Beth and Vincent Chiarella and daughter Mia. You may remember Chiarella’s Ristorante on Taylor Avenue, now Dog Tooth Bar and Grill. That’s where chef Vincent made his last meatball after more than thirty years in business. Now that’s a lot of meatballs. I immediately felt the at home at Gia where I was warmly greeted by Beth who runs the front of the house. Her husband and daughter are co-chefs. The decor exudes that same warmth and I could tell those dining were truly enjoying themselves. The place simply felt happy. Beth knew a lot of them by name – it was obvious they were repeat customer – saying hello as she led myself and my dining partner whom I’ll call “Fred” to our table where we were greeted by Guido, our waiter, in fact, everybody’s waiter in the dining room. Guido has one of those great personalties that is irresistible. He told me he “loves being with people and kids” and gave up a corporate manager position to be a waiter. Fred considers himself a calamari connoisseur so of course he opted for the fried squid as an appetizer. Fred was wowed. Tender, crunchy, absolutely perfect, he managed to mouth between bites. I ordered the steamed clams, also cooked to perfection with a broth well worth taking a dip in. I asked Guido to suggest my entree and he immediately said the veal or chicken Parmigiana was one of the specialties of the house. I chose the veal. Many times I’ve had bad veal Parmigiana – either too tough or patties filled with God knows what. Not at Gia, the veal parm was perfection, and I must say, the best I’ve ever had. Fred ordered the New York strip steak sauteed in fresh garlic and peppercorns served over smashed potatoes. The menu states all beef is Black Angus and cut on premise. I believe it. An inch thick, char grilled and melt in your mouth tender. The garlic and peppercorns were obvious but not overpowering. By dessert, we could eat no more but Guido insisted we try the Tiramisu by in-house pastry chef Matthew Haven. It

was much worth the extra five pounds I must have gained that evening. All told, a most enjoyable and delicious experience – without a meatball in sight!

20 Random Jokes 1 I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn’t work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness. 2 Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. 3 I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather.. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car. 4 Sex is not the answer. Sex is the question. “Yes” is the answer. 5 The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it’s still on the list. 6 We live in a society where pizza gets to your house before the police. 7 Women might be able to fake orgasms. But men can fake a whole relationship. 8 Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 9 If I agreed with you we’d both be wrong. 10 Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. 11 Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich. 12 We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public. 13 War does not determine who is right - only who is left. 14 Children: You spend the first 2 years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next 16 years telling them to sit down and shut-up. 15 Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. 16 Having sex is like playing bridge. If you don’t have a good partner, you’d better have a good hand. 17 Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason. 18 My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch. 19 The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. 20 Evening news is where they begin with ‘Good evening’, and then proceed to tell you why it isn’t.

Man eats underwear to beat breathalyzer
The following is reprinted from an article by D’Arcy Rickard, “The Red Deer Advocate”, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada: “A Stettler man tried to eat his underwear in the hope that the cotton fabric would absorb alcohol before he took a breathalyzer test, provincial court heard this week. David Zurfluh was subsequently acquitted of a charge of impaired driving because he blew a .08, the legal limit.
highway.
While sitting in the back of the patrol car, Mr. Zurfluh tried to eat his shorts, Const. Robinson told the court. Mr. Zurfluh said he ripped the crotch out of his shorts, stuffed the fabric in his mouth, then spit it out.
But the testimony broke up people in Judge David MacNaughton’s provincial court here Thursday afternoon.
A class of law students from William E. Hay Composite High, in court as observers, was removed by the teacher when testimony enlivened the proceedings. The Grade 11 and 12 students had difficulty maintaining composure.
Mr. Zurfluh was collared by RCMP Const. Bill Robinson after he ran from his vehicle, which had been seen weaving down the
“People were leaving the courtroom with tears in their eyes, trying not to laugh,” said RCMP Const. Peter McFarlane.”
Police in Dortmund, Germany, arrested six Romanian men in June and charged them with stealing from trucks on the open highway. Allegedly, the thieves would drive their own truck carefully up behind a tractor-trailer at highway speed, and a man on the hood would reach out and open the back of the rig with a bolt cutter. He would climb in and loot the rig of computers and cell phones by passing them out to a partner sitting on the hood of the trailing truck. ---------------------------------------Motorist Michael Mills Jr., 38, who was making a getaway from police in Chesapeake, Va. (who wanted him on identitytheft charges), broke through a drawbridge warning arm and tried to jump (“Dukes of Hazzard”-style) onto the span that was being lowered (but which wouldn’t be completely down for another several minutes). He missed, and the car plunged into the Elizabeth River, where it sank (but Mills was rescued and arrested). ---------------------------------------A 30-year-old man appears to be the most recent person (according to the account of police in Woodland, Calif., in August) to attempt to throw burning fireworks at a target while traveling in a car, but having the toss fail to clear the window and thus explode inside the car. He was hospitalized. In another familiar scene, two 18-year-old
men spotted police approaching their trailer-park home in Salina, Kan., in August, panicked, and tossed illegal drugs out a window. However, police spotted the flying drugs, even though cops had originally intended only to serve warrants on two of their neighbors. The men were arrested. ---------------------------------------Police in Fort Myers, Fla., said Jonathon Guabello, 29, who was angry that his girlfriend had denied him sex when they came home from a bar in October, left the room, shot himself twice in the arm, fell, and hit his head on a kitchen appliance, knocking himself out. ---------------------------------------In Anderson Township, Ohio, in July, another frustrated lover, angry that his girlfriend kept falling asleep one night during sex, retaliated, according to police, by attempting to set fire to her van. (The 46-year-old man who couldn’t sustain his lover’s interest is Gregory Smallwood.) ---------------------------------------Australian Wool Innovation recently introduced, for the Japanese executives’ market, a washable business suit that can be cleaned in an ordinary shower and will dry overnight, virtually wrinkle-free (and, in a pinch, can even be worn in the shower). ---------------------------------------By a 2-1 vote, a Florida appeals court ruled in December that Andrew Craissati could stop paying alimony to his ex-
wife. The couple’s agreement called for alimony only until she remarried or was “cohabit(ing)” with another person for at least three months, and Craissati pointed out that his ex-wife, recently convicted of a serious DUI offense, is now “cohabiting” with a cellmate in prison. ---------------------------------------Robert Christianson, 64, was arrested in October upon his arrival at Tampa International Airport, based on a hold requested by Canadian customs officials. Christianson was being sought only on two warrants: allowing a dog to run at large and having no license for his dog. ---------------------------------------Joseph Goetz, 48, was charged with trying to rob the Susquehanna Bank in Springettsbury Township, Pa., in November, even though he had to leave emptyhanded. The bank had just opened for the day, and cash had not yet been delivered to tellers’ stations. Employees said that Goetz was highly irritated at having wasted his time, and that he threatened to file a “complaint” about the bank’s operations. ---------------------------------------And in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sydney Teerhuis, on trial for killing a man, claimed self-defense even though he admitted not only stabbing the man 68 times but having sex with the body during the spree. He was convicted.

CHLOE
Synopsis: When David (liaM NEESON) misses his flight home from New York and, as a result, the surprise party his wife Catherine (JUliaNNE MOORE) has planned for him, Catherine is forced to swallow her... When David (liaM NEESON) misses his flight home from New York and, as a result, the surprise party his wife Catherine (JUliaNNE MOORE) has planned for him, Catherine is forced to swallow her disappointment and any suspicions and return to the waiting guests. Reading a text message sent to David’s phone the following morning from one of his female students, Catherine’s fear grows. The successful couple, Catherine, a doctor, and David a professor of music, have a 17-year-old son, Michael (MaX THiERiOT), and to an outsider, they have everything. But their careers and raising a child have put strains on the marriage; their relationship is suffering greatly from loss of communication and intimacy. Two weeks after the surprise party, Catherine and David are at dinner with friends when Catherine excuses herself to use the restroom. There she meets an alluring young woman who, in those brief moments, connects with Catherine—it is Chloe (aMaNDa SEYFRiED). Returning to the table where they’re now playing, they spot the hooker, Catherine watches with interest as Chloe approaches an older businessman. On the drive home Catherine finally asks David if he intentionally missed his flight from New York to stay for drinks. When he claims he did not, she knows she has caught him in a lie. Now more suspicious than ever that David is having an affair, Catherine seeks out Chloe, an escort, hiring her to test David’s fidelity. Meeting regularly, Catherine absorbs the explicit details Chloe shares of her encounters with David, igniting Catherine’s jealousy and awakening long- dormant sensations. Soon caught in a web of sexual desire, Catherine finds herself on a journey that places her family in great danger—is it too late to stop Chloe? --© Sony Pictures Classics «« Wildwood Mag Rating (1to10)

«« Alice in Wonderland – A disappointment. There’s nothing wrong with a revisionist “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,’’ but Tim Burton’s 3-D version ultimately looks like every other CGI action-fantasy epic out there, despite a few goth touches. Johnny Depp is fun but overindulged as the Mad Hatter; Mia Wasikowska’s charming adolescent Alice gets lost under the sub-“Narnia’’ mayhem. The movie’s not insane, and that hurts. (108 min., PG) (Ty Burr) ««« Ajami – Israel’s nominee for the foreign language Oscar — and a huge hit at home — is a harrowing, affecting multiple-character drama about the gulf between Palestinians and Jews. Think “Crash’’ with fewer contrivances and bigger stakes. Co-written and directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, Arab and Jew, respectively. In Arabic and Hebrew, with subtitles. (120 min., unrated) (Ty Burr) «« Arabia – IMAX veteran Greg MacGillivray (“Everest’’) delivers that quintessential IMAX trip. Panoramic shots take us swooping over deserts, diving through Red Sea reefs, and hovering over cityscapes of modern and ancient Saudi Arabia. The affable narration by a young Saudi film student tempers the hype with poignant commentary, namely, that Americans “think we’re all extremists.’’(46 min., unrated) (Ethan Gilsdorf )

«««« Avatar – James Cameron’s long-game gamble pays off — for the most part. The film creates a planet called Pandora, a race of tall, blue cat-people called the Na’vi, and gives them both a dazzlingly colorful rain forest reality — part Rousseau, part George Lucas on inhalants. The 60 percent of the film that comes from the computer is tantalizingly realistic; the roughly 40 percent that’s live action is less convincing. With Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Zoe Saldana. (162 min., PG-13) (Ty Burr) ««« The Blind Side Sandra Bullock plays a Memphis woman who takes in an enormous, athletic African-American. He thrives. She thrives. The film is hard to resist. But it’s another Hollywood movie about a black male rescued from God knows what either by nice white people or sports. Here it’s both. How good we feel is directly proportional to how blind we’re willing to be. (125 min., PG-13) (Wesley Morris) «« Cop Out – A white-guy/black-guy buddy comedy with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as New York City cops. Only a fool would believe that this spit wad of potty jokes and F-grade storytelling is more than an occasionally funny staging of one of the fake movie posters in Morgan’s “30 Rock’’ dressing room. In other words: a joke. An image from this movie would hang just fine next to one of “Who Dat Ninja.’’ Directed, barely, by Kevin Smith. (104 min., R) (Wesley Morris) «««« Crazy Heart A familiar tale — fading country musician hits bottom, looks up — enlivened by a great, generous jewel of a performance by Jeff Bridges, our shaggiest of leading men. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a single mom who falls for him against her better judgment; Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall turn up, too. Songs by T Bone Burnett and the late Stephen Bruton. (111 min., R) (Ty Burr)Continued... ««« The Crazies – An unexpectedly solid remake of George Romero’s almostforgotten 1973 horror movie, about what happens to a small town when a top-secret government bio-weapon gets into the water supply. (Check the title.) It does what an exploitation movie should do: Gets in, scares you silly, and gets out, all while playing fair by the audience. (101 min., R) (Ty Burr) «« Dear John – Another calculated tear-jerker based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, author of “The Notebook,’’ “Message in a Bottle,’’ and “Nights in Rodanthe.’’ This time the star-crossed lovers are a soldier (Channing Tatum) and a college student (Amanda Seyfried) kept apart by war. Lasse Hallstrom directs without distinction. Tatum’s copper-toned abs and pecs get enough camera time to deserve their own casting credits. (102 min., PG-13) (Janice Page) «««« The Hurt Locker – This war film focuses on the work of an Army bomb squad and one particularly gifted soldier (Jere my Renner), who seems to have no fear of roadside bombs. We see and feel how when he disarms a bomb, it’s almost no different from watching a conductor seduce an orchestra or a chef produce a meal. (88 min., R) (Wesley Morris) ««« The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers – A meaty, suspenseful, Oscar-nominated

documentary about the government policy wonk who became so disillusioned with the Vietnam War he released 7,000 pages of classified material to the press in 1971. The film’s hardly even-handed — the 78-year-old Ellsberg narrates his own story — but it’s so convincingly damning it doesn’t need to be. (92 min., unrated) (Ty Burr) «««« Precious: Based on the Novel “Push’’ by Sapphire – Is America, in fact, ready for a movie about a poor, fat black girl (Gabourey Sidibe) who can’t read and is pregnant, for the second time, with her absent father’s baby? Who cares? It’s here, and it’s very much alive. In its own determined way, this is a work of immense, astonishing joy. It believes that in this girl’s wide, brown face and bleak little life there’s a reason to live. Mo’Nique brings down the house as her mother. (110 min., R) (Wesley Morris) ««« A Prophet – The thrillingly talented Jacques Audiard upends the racial power structure of French organized crime with tale of a young Arab (Tahar Rahim) and his cunning rise from petty thug to king of the underworld. This is a class of movie that operates on a higher plane than its peers. You wrestle with it. But it’s here to be wrestled with. In French, with subtitles. (155 min., R) (Wesley Morris) «« Shutter Island – Martin Scorsese proves susceptible to the chic of filming a Dennis Lehane bestseller. It’s an inspired extraction though not a terribly satisfying one. The mood, though, is eerie, and the supporting cast — including Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, and Patricia Clarkson — excellent. (140 min., R) (Wesley Morris) ««« A Single Man – Colin Firth has been our stalwart Hollywood Brit for so long you may have forgotten he can act. Based on the landmark 1964 novel, this casts the star as a closeted gay man mourning the death of his lover — it’s about the grief that dare not speak its name. Fashion designer Tom Ford directs sensitively but without much subtlety; Firth brings the latter. (99 min., R) (Ty Burr) «« The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D – Nine-time world champion Kelly Slater heads to French Polynesia for some serious surfing in this latest offering at the New England Aquarium’s Simons IMAX Theatre. The scenery’s spectacular, the storytelling rather less so. (42 min., unrated) (Mark Feeney) ««« Up in the Air From Jason Reitman, a warm, smoothly made movie about a man (George Clooney) who spends most of his time firing people. The movie concerns his attempt to settle down. At its very best, it invents new for old Hollywood sophistication. The sequined cocktail parties and crack banter are now happening in the Admirals Club lounge. With Vera Farmiga, Jason Bateman, and Anna Kendrick, who’ll rightly be labeled a discovery. (109 min., R) (Wesley Morris) «« The Wolfman – What are dignified, award-worthy thespians like Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Sir Anthony Hopkins doing in a piece of old-school hokum like this? Having the time of their lives while trying to keep a straight face. The movie is by no means good but it’s surprisingly enjoyable: a Saturday-matinee monsterchiller-horror special that alternates fog-machine atmosphere with spurts of trendy gore. (92 min., unrated) (Ty Burr)
