Eating out with Lindsey Langsden Fitzpatrick’s Crest Tavern is the place to go for great food, drinks, friends in a fun atmosphere
G
ood Food, Good Drinks, Good Times, Good Friends ... All at the Crest Tavern. That’s the motto of Fitzpatrick’s Crest Tavern and true it is. Just walk through the door and you’re immediately greeted with a warm, friendly hello. And whether it’s the bar you’re headed to or a cozy dining room booth, it’s a sure thing there will be good conversation with the either the wait staff or the bartender. Since the 1970s, the Crest Tavern has been a mainstay in Wildwood Crest. Lisa and Tim Fitzpatrick bought the establishment in 1995 and officially changed its name to Fitzpatrick’s Crest Tavern in 2004. The couple run it together, Lisa working days and Tim nights, creating, and carrying on the family atmosphere the tavern has always been known for. The menu is classic tavern fare, and says Lisa, freshly made. “We use nothing frozen, our seafood is local and the crab cakes are made daily.” In fact, the seafood dishes at the Crest Tavern are among the most popular. The steamers in a garlic butter sauce and the mussels marinara – also served with a white sauce – are two of the house specialties and customer favorites as are the Mardi Gras shrimp which boasts a dozen shrimp sauteed in a “secret” spicy sauce. “A Philadelphia newspaper did a feature on the Mardi Gras shrimp recently,” Lisa says. “The writer tried to figure out what our secret was and couldn’t. It’s really quite simple,” laughs Lisa, “And no, I’m not telling you either.” The crab portobello – a sauteed portobello mushroom topped with tomato, a crab cake and Swiss cheese and roasted and surrounded by roasted red peppers – is another favorite. And besides seafood, the Crest Tavern offers pizza and paninis, soups and salads, burgers and hot and cold sandwiches including a traditional liverwurst and onion served on rye bread. Appetizers include wings nachos, poppers, shrimp in the rough and fried mac and cheese wedges. Dinner entrees run the gamut from local flounder, broiled fried or stuffed, to grilled apple bacon pork chops topped with cinnamon Fugi apples and smoked bacon, to its “Awesome Chicken” which is a grilled chicken breast “smeared” with barbecue sauce ad topped with mushrooms, apple bacon and cheddar cheese served over rice. The Crest Tavern offers nightly specials and chicken pot pie in puff pastry every Wednesday night. Recently refurbished, the tavern hosts a full bar which, Lisa says, has “a Philadelphia sports-based atmosphere” with 18 televisions sets and “game on” draft beer and appetizer specials. The Crest Tavern has outside patio seating weather permitting, and a full-service package goods store including lottery tickets, and take-out service. So, if you’re looking for great food, a friendly atmosphere and a fun time, Fitzpatrick’s Crest Tavern is the place to be when in Wildwood Crest. Hope to see you there!

If you have had the opportunity to taste the difference in baking with high quality vanilla, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for homemade baking! One of the secrets to good baking is to use high quality ingredients like Vanilla from Madagascar. The majority of the world’s vanilla is the V. planifolia variety, more commonly known as “Madagascar-Bourbon” vanilla, which is produced in a small region of Madagascar and in Indonesia. Vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron, due to the extensive labor involved in growing the vanilla seed pods. Vanilla Orchid is native to Mexico, although Madagascar is the worlds largest producer, and is also grown throughout the tropics. Vanilla Imitations Most imitation vanillas contain vanillin, only one of 171 identified aromatic components of the real vanilla beans. Vanillin can be produced synthetically from lignin. Most synthetic vanillin is a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry, and is made from waste sulfate, which contains lignin-sulfonic acid. The vanilla bean grows quickly on the vine but is not ready for harvest until maturity — approximately ten months. Each bean ripens at its own time, requiring a daily harvest. To ensure the finest flavor from every bean, each individual pod must be picked by hand just as it begins to split on the endOver matured beans are likely to split causing a reduction in market value. Its commercial value is fixed based on the length of the pod. If the bean is more than 15 cm in length it belongs to first quality product. If the beans are between 10 to 15 cm long pods are under second quality and beans less than 10 cm in length are under third quality. Williams-Sonoma has a nice vareity, Nielsen-Massey Vanilla. An 8oz.bottle goes for $19.00, 4oz. $10.00 This vanilla is known as “bourbon vanilla.” The term dates from the time when Madagascar and several other vanilla-growing islands were under French rule and were called the Bourbon Islands.) Made from selected vanilla pods in an exclusive cold-process method, the extract has a rich, intense flavor. The vanilla beans are whole 7” pods, each equivalent to approximately 1 tablespoon of extract. If you buy Vanilla beans you only need three or four, place in an airtight bottle, like a empty, glass water bottle, slice the beans lentghwise, fill bottle with premium vodka( or rum combination) and place in a dark place like a kitchen cabinet. You will need to shake the bottle daily for about 1-2 months and you will have your own vanilla. Highly recomended, make your own or buy, but try it in all of your recipes, you will never go back to normal vanilla. Article by: Collette Myland

The success of her restaurant is built on the philosophy of making everyone who walks through the door feel special. Joanna came to the United States from Korea, where she worked in her parents’ sushi restaurant.
Although she wanted to become a comedian, she needed to work when she got here. However, no one would hire her into the male-dominated domain of sushi. She finally talked an employer into letting her work for him without pay. After just one week he was so impressed with her talent that he started paying her.

Nashville comes to Wildwood Article by Bruce McCausland. Photos by Tyler Golato
Think back to the years when Wildwood rocked. With artists like Kiss, Elton John, Alice Cooper, and many others making stops in Wildwood, it’s hard for the young people of this town to imagine what it was like. But there is one place where the music stills rocks on, and that place is here in Wildwood. Mako Recordings, located at 3208 Pacific Avenue in the heart of Wildwood, is keeping the music alive. Mako Recordings is a full recording studio that specializes in audio recordings ranging from commercial ads, to demos, to actual songs. This studio does it all. Founded by Wildwood natives Don Shaw and Bill Caterini, this studio has a lot to offer. Don Shaw is a Nashville session guitarist that has worked with some big names in the country and rock music realms. He’s from Wildwood and has strong ties to the Wildwood and Nashville music scenes. Bill Caterini is also a wildwood native. He is a big part of the Wildwood music scene, and he is apart of some big music industry organizations, such as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and the Audio Engineering Society. He recently hosted the Singer/Songwriter Convention in Cape May.
This isn’t some basement in your mother’s house recording studio; this is a full-fledged studio with professional software and equipment. Using the industry-standard recording program, Pro Tools, recording can be made easily, but more importantly, professionally. The studio also makes use of a variety of equipment. Mako Recordings customers are able to make use of the studios guitars, varying from vintage fenders and Gibson to more modern models, to studio drums, and studio amps, varying from vintage marshals, bogners, and fenders. All of this makes it sound like recording sessions would be pricey, but not to worry, the studios rates are very affordable. With packages to fit every budget, the studio will work with you. There are also special rates for high school and college students. Mako also offers full musical services and can lay down instrumental tracks for you. If you just have an idea, they can musically arrange and compose the entire piece. They also have access to Nashville session musicians, and can offer their services to the customer and highly discounted rates. No projects are too big or too small. So if you are getting the old band back together or just starting out, Mako Recordings is the place to be for your recording needs. If you have any questions you can reach Bill Caterini at 954-592-1030.

If you’re going to take advantage of the Buyer’s Market...
Do it right.
Right Now! From the bustling boardwalks to the peaceful sunsets there’s nowhere like the Jersey Shore. The beaches, the golf, the entertainment and the people make the Jersey Shore and the Wildwoods the perfect location. And there's never been a better time to buy. Check out the facts and see why it’s the right time to enter the Jersey Shore real estate market.
Pricing is Low! Home prices have lowered to reasonable levels and it’s time to take advantage of these prices.
Inventory is High! Right now, the selection of homes and condos in the Wildwoods makes it a buyers market.
Interest Rates are Low! The lowest in years, interest rates make buying a home very affordable.
Return on Investment is High! Even in an “off” market, real estate continues to appreciate in the long term.
