Wildwood Crest Centennial Celebration Weekend
Aug. 27-28 to include live music, bike parade, more WILDWOOD CREST – The summer season of the Borough of Wildwood Crest’s Centennial Year is set to come to a spectacular close as the borough hosts Centennial Celebration Weekend on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28. The event will take place at Centennial Park, Fern Road and Ocean Avenue and is FREE and open to all ages. The festivities begin Friday evening, Aug. 27, with a special free outdoor concert featuring the Joe Baione Group at 7:30 p.m. Also a music educator, clinician and producer, Baione is a professional jazz vibraphonist backed by a talented group of jazz musicians who is sure to deliver a highly energetic and creative jazz performance. Over the years, Baione and his band have played at various jazz festivals throughout the region and beyond and have performed at such venerable concert halls as the Lincoln Center in New York City and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. The rest of the Centennial Celebration Weekend activities will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, featuring live music from two bands, a performance by a popular string band from the Philadelphia area, children’s activities, a bike parade and more. Saturday’s schedule begins at 5 p.m. with a bike parade around the perimeter of Centennial Park. The parade is open and free to the public. All participants must decorate their bikes for the Centennial. Categories include: tikes on trikes (or training wheels): up to age 5; two-wheelers – up to age 12; tricksters – ages 13-29; the over 30 crowd – ages 30 and over; grandsters on trikes – ages 50 and over. Registration for the bike parade begins at 4:30 p.m. at the park. Ribbons will be awarded to the winners. Following the bike parade, local rock band Twelve:01 will take the stage on the park’s new entertainment pavilion at 5:30 p.m. Twelve:01 is a classic and contemporary cover/original rock and pop band that enjoys a strong following in Cape May County. At approximately 6:45 p.m., the Hegeman String Band, straight from Broad Street in Philadelphia, will march into the park and play everyone’s New Year’s Day favorites. A group of approximately 40 members that was first established in 1920, the Hegeman String Band regularly performs at various festivals, community parades, charity functions and more in addition to its annual appearance in the world-famous Philadelphia Mummers Parade on New Year’s Day.
Live Concert by “Bandstand”
The event culminates with a live concert performance by Bandstand at 7:30 p.m. A versatile band with a full rhythm and horn section, Bandstand performs all styles of music from the 1940s through today and has been one of the more popular acts to perform at the park over the last couple of summers. In addition to all of the activities on and around the entertainment pavilion, the event will also feature children’s activities such as a magic show, face painting and a moon bounce. Various food vendors will also be on hand. The Wildwood Crest Centennial Celebration Weekend is free and open to the entire family. Free parking for the event will be available two blocks south at Myrtle Road and Ocean Avenue. Wildwood Crest was officially incorporated as a borough in April 1910. The borough has been holding various special events to commemorate its centennial throughout the year. For more information concerning the Wildwood Crest Centennial Celebration Weekend, call (609) 523-0202 or log on to www.visitwildwoodcrest.com.

UNUSUAL FUNERAL A woman was leaving a convenience store with her morning coffee when she noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitarywoman walking a pit bull on a leash. Behind her, a short distance back, were about 200 women walking single file. The woman was so curious that she respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, “I am so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I have never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?” “My husband’s.” “What happened to him?” The woman replied, “My dog attacked and killed him.” She inquired further, “Well, who is in the second hearse?” The woman answered, “My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her.” A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two women. “Can I borrow the dog?” “Get in line.”

A man went into a confessional booth and discovered a fully equipped bar with beer on tap and a wall stocked with a dazzling array of the finest Cuban cigars. When the priest walked into the room the man said, “Father, forgive me, for it has been a long time since I’ve been to confession, but I must say the confessional box is much more inviting than I remember.” “Get out,” the priest ordered. “You’re on my side.”

Ask a saleswoman whether a particular shade of panties matches the color of your beard. 7. Sneak up on saleswomen at the perfume counter and spray them with your own bottle of Eau de Swanke. 6. Collect stacks of paint brochures and hand them out as religious tracts. 5. At the pet store, ask if they have bulk discounts on gerbils, and whether there’s much meat on them. 4. Hand a stack of pants back to the changing room attendant and scornfully announce that none of them are “leak proof ”. 3. Ask appliance personnel if they have any TVs that play only in Spanish.

Lincoln - Kennedy Similarities
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.
The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both were shot in the head. Now this is interesting… Lincoln’s secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy’s secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners. Both successors were named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908. John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy was born in 1939. Both assassins were known by their three names. Both names comprise fifteen letters. Booth ran from a theater and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater. Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials. And here’s the kicker,
Joe & Anita @ The Mango Men concert at Centennial Park
Just before Lincoln was shot he was in Monroe, Maryland. Just before Kennedy was shot he was with Marilyn Monroe.

www.ElitePublicAdjusters.com A young man goes into a drug store to buy condoms. The pharmacist says the condoms come in packs of 3, 9 or 12 and asks which the young man wants. “Well,” he said, “I’ve been seeing this girl for a while and she’s really hot. I want the condoms because I think tonight’s “the” night. We’re having dinner with her parents, and then we’re going out. And I’ve got a feeling I’m gonna get lucky after that.” “Once she’s had me, she’ll want me all the time, so you’d better give me the 12 pack.” The young man makes his purchase and leaves. Later that evening, he sits down to dinner with his girlfriend and her parents. He asks if he might give the blessing and they agree. He begins the prayer, but continues praying for several minutes. The girl leans over to him and says, “You never told me that you were such a religious person.” The boy leans over to her and whispers, “You never told me that your father is a pharmacist.”

A man was sitting quietly and reading the paper one morning when his wife walked up behind and hit him on the back of his head with a frying pan. “What was that for?” “Tell me about that piece of paper in your pocket with the name Heather written on it,” his wife exclaimed angrily. “Oh, honey,” he said. “Heather was the name of one of the horses I bet on when I went to the races two weeks ago.” Satisfied with his answer, the wife apologized and left him alone. Three days later the man was sitting in his chair reading when his wife again walked up and hit him the head with a frying pan. “Now whet the hell was that for?” he demanded indignantly. “Your horse called,” she replied.

The Girl Around Town By Natalie Cooper I remember coming into town around 11 PM on a Sunday night three months ago. I was tired. I had driven eight hours up from school in North Carolina. It was dark, and the roads were quiet, with the exception of my car radio, the volume kept high purposely to keep me awake. I remember being excited—excited to see my family and friends and excited to see what this summer had in store for me. But most of all I was excited to be home for good for a few months. But this excitement was blinded by my struggle to keep my eyes open and pay attention to the road. Around me was deserted. The only lights I saw were mine, my headlights shining on the road in front of me. Until I came to the bridge. And I remember coming over the bridge and looking out across the island, it’s landscape stretched out before me in a see of tiny white lights shimmering from houses and stores situated along the shorelines. I remember seeing the glow from the Ferris Wheel standing out against the dark night sky, it’s displays of swirling, flashing bright neon lights illuminating the coastline from the other end of the island. I remember seeing rippled reflections cast out by the moonlight onto the water of boats docked at the marina to my right. And I remember seeing Rio Grande Avenue before me, the strip lined with restaurants and stores and attractions, each one offering something different of their own unique quality and taste. And I remember thinking to myself…finally I’m home. But I think what I remember the most about that long, tiring ride home was the feeling—that feeling I get whenever I see the Wildwood skyline—that feeling of warmth, comfort, closeness. That feeling I don’t experience anywhere else besides this island. That feeling of home. And no matter how many times I leave, whether for school or vacation or what not, I always have that itching anticipation to come back, like I can’t be away for too long before I feel like a part of me is missing. That feeling consumed me today on my drive out of town at precisely 11 AM this Sunday morning. Except this time, nothing was glowing. It was bright and sunny, and people were out and about riding bikes and walking and shopping. And they were smiling. And as I watched them smile and have a good time, I couldn’t help but feel worse because I had to leave town to go back to school. I had to leave Wildwood. I had to leave home. Welcome Irish WeekI decided to take the long way out of town and leave the island via Rio Grande Ave. I figured this way I could have one final look at the Closed 9/22 & 9/25 Ferris Wheel, the boardwalk, the stores, the restaurants—including Beach Fri.-Sat.-Sun. Creek, whereOpen I spent most nights working.10/3, 10/4 & 10/5 Feeling somewhat upset, I then came to the bridge. It’s funny how three months ago I was excited to crossCOUPON it to go into town, but now dread to cross it to leave. With one final look around me, I was over FREE the bridge and slowly losing that feeling of home. But then the itching anticipation came, and my mind raced, trying to figure out when it was 3:30-5:30pm the next time I’d be back. And that’s when I remembered—I’d be home $ 95 starting at next weekend. With the simple thought of returning a few days, my mood Presentinwhen ordering. 3516 Atlantic Avenue, GoodI’d only was looking up. I wasn’t leaving for good. bewith backpurchase before Iofknew it. NORTH WILDWOOD – Remember when vacationing in the Wildwoods invariably included spinning a rack of postcards, finding the perfect one to send friends back home, and writing the fib “Wish you were here”? Today we’re more likely to click our cell phone and e-mail the image to friends on Facebook. But anyone who’s nostalgic about that simpler era will thoroughly enjoy the Giant Postcard Exhibition currently being installed at the Wildwood Historical Society/George F. Boyer Museum, 3907 Pacific Ave. in Wildwood. The exhibition features the “Designer Series Postcards” with scenic views of the beach and boardwalk (including things that aren’t there anymore, like the rides on the above photo of Morey’s Pier, circa 1983); sightseer boats like “The Flamingo”; local girls posing as pin-up girls; and even a beefcake photo of local bodybuilder and gym owner Mike Wuko (currently in another line of work). According to Hunsberger, “People who have strong, happy memories of visiting the Wildwoods 20-30 years ago, hone right in on these images, because they tie in to their experiences. They relate to their lives.” The postcards were originally produced by photographer and entrepreneur Douglas Hunsberger in the 1980s. From 1981 through 1988, you could choose from extensive selections on racks in gift shops, motel lobbies, and stores all over the island. The exhibit goes beyond merely displaying the postcards. Hunsberger has transformed them into giant 3-foot by 2-foot giclee prints, which means they begin as high resolution digital scans. Then they’re printed with archival quality inks and laminated. When finished and mounted, they have the appearance of a three-dimensional photograph. The unique and imaginative images were stored years ago by Hunsberger who, in the process of moving last June, examined his extensive collection of transparencies. Hunsberger began preparing the giant postcards for the exhibit at the urging of Robert Scully, Curator of the Wildwood Historical Society Museum, and Wildwood Historical Society President Anne Vinci. The exhibit will be housed in the museum’s fairly new addition, built in 2008. One postcard at a time will be hung, the first one going up Thursday, Aug. 5. Hanging the rest, a total of 20, will be an ongoing process through the summer. The public is welcome to come in now, and then visit often as the project progresses. When completed, the exhibit will remain in the Boyer Museum through the summer, but in winter months, will be available to travel. Other museums, schools, community centers, and so forth would be ideal places to bring this historic and artistic creation. Limited edition prints will be available for the public to buy. North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey said, “This exhibit will be lots of fun for everyone who lives in or visits the Wildwoods. The older generation will feel they’ve stepped back in time, and the young ones will have the chance to understand something of their parents’ history.” As you can imagine, the exhibit is quite costly. It is made possible by sponsors and many have already committed to the project. But more are needed. Anyone interested in being a sponsor, or finding out more about the exhibit, should call the museum at 609-523-0277.
