DOGTOOTH Dining You Can Sink Your Teeth Into Sometimes you know what you want, and sometimes you don’t. When you don’t, it’s usually best to wing it. So last Thursday, when we stopped at the Dogtooth Grill on the way out to meet friends, wings were the perfect anecdote to our indecision. The fact that it was wing night, and for just $0.35 a piece we could order a pile of pictureperfect wings for a tiny price made the choice easy. Then my dining partner and I ordered beverages to get us started and turned our attention to the huge menu for our next choices. Everywhere you look at Dogtooth, there are choices. The wine list includes 20 Wing Night means crisp, tender items, all available by the wings in a well-spiced buffalo glass for $5-8. There are 11 sauce, or choose teriyaki or barbeque for just $0.35 a piece. beers on draft and more than 20 in bottles, and the cocktail menu seems limitless and fun with drinks like the Tramcar-tini and the Dog’s Best Friend. But on this night, we didn’t feel like making decisions, so we went with our old favorites. I had a margarita on the rocks, which came in a pint glass with a salted rim, and my husband ordered his old stand-by, a Dogfish 60 minute IPA. Next it was time to decide what to order for dinner. The new flatbread pizza menu looked appealing with familiar classics like Pizza Margherita with fresh mozzarella and plum tomatoes, plus unexpected creations topped with arugula, goat cheese and proscuitto. But we had just eaten pizza the night before so we looked on. A special salad of tender blackened The Dogtooth Bites of chicken over arugula with goat cheese blackened ahi tuna with and roasted red peppers was big sesame and soy are one enough for two. of my favorite appetizers ever, but I still had wings on the brain. Somehow, I eventually decided on the Fontina Chicken, and my other half ordered a salad with grilled chicken that was on the specials menu that night.

His salad was a bed of spicy arugula, topped with a healthy portion of blackened chicken, goat cheese, diced sweet tomatoes, 10beautifully | WildwoodMag.com

and roasted red peppers tossed with a balsamic vinaigrette that added just the right bit of tang. It would have been enough for two of us. And the Chicken Fontina, honestly, it was enough to feed my whole family. Two huge, pan-fried breaded chicken breasts were topped with thinly-sliced proscuitto ham (Yum, my favorite!), tiny grape tomatoes, cut in half and marinated in balsamic vinegrette, sprinkled with big lumps of crab meat and finished off with a citrus beurre blanc and what seemed like a pound of melted fontina cheese. On the side was rice pilaf, and Donna, our friendly waitress, a medley of steamed veggies cut was knowledgeable and fast. julienne style into thick sticks. The plate was so heavy, I barely know how our waitress, Donna, carried it to the table with one hand. I barely made a dent in it. In fact, my son who has never met a leftover he couldn’t eat, only managed to down about a quarter of the Dogtooth doggie bag I brought home. That was good news for me. I enjoyed Chicken Fontina again for lunch the next day, and I was beginning to think it was like the miracle of the loaves and fishes, until alas, at dinner that evening, my friend and I managed to polish it off with a bottle of wine. NEW YEARS 2011 A man and his wife were working in their garden one day when the man looked over at his wife and said, “Your butt’s getting huge. I bet it’s bigger than the barbecue.” With that, he proceeded to get a measuring tape and measured the grill. Then he went over to where his wife was working and measured her butt. “I was right, your butt is two inches wider than the barbecue!” The woman chose to ignore her husband. Later that night in bed, the husband felt a little frisky. He made some advances toward her, but she completely brushed him off. “What’s wrong?” he asked. She replied, “Do you really think I’m going to fire up this great big grill for one little weenie?”

Three Live Bands will be Rock’n in the name of Education!

Sally & Bill @ Mike Callahan Beef & Beer

CENTER CITY VIDEO OUTLET

The Wildwoods will be rock’n this Saturday Night all in the name of Education! The Support Education in the Wildwoods Foundation will host the “Rock’n the Wildwoods” at the Bolero’s Blue Water Grill Saturday, November 13, 2010. A Beef and Beverage will be hosted from 7pm to 10pm with live music until 11pm featuring Three Live Local Bands! Headlining the event is South Jersey’s own Funny Bone, a high-energy band that captivated the Philadelphia and South Jersey music scene in the early to mid 90s. The band has not lost its touch and has received rave reviews since reuniting on a limited basis for some local charity events. Shoots N’ Ladders, a Cape May County favorite will Rock the Wildwoods with their upbeat tempo and wide variety of cover songs. Sloppy Jose, a newcomer to the Wildwoods Music Scene will be opening the night with their exciting brand of Rock and Roll music that’s bound to please the crowd. All three bands jumped at the opportunity to play this FUN-raising event as each band has a graduate from the Wildwood school system.

The Girl Around Town By Natalie Cooper My friend asked me if I wanted to carpool home from college with her for the upcoming weekend. Having not been back to Wildwood in over a month, I quickly jumped at the idea. Obviously, I couldn’t pass up the chance to be with my family and friends, if only for a few days, and to be on the island and to see it during the fall. It’s my favorite time of year, after all, for that’s when everything settles down and transitions from the busy summer months into the slower winter months. The streets get a little quieter, the weather a little cooler, the air a little crisper. The leaves change from greens to golden browns and burnt oranges before falling to the ground and leaving the trees bare, and the roar of the ocean waves crashing against the shore becomes more defiant, echoing down the streets blocks away from the beach. Everything seems to be calmer and relaxed now that the peak tourist season has winded down, and the small, tight-knit community finally comes back together. For me, fall at home always brought about new beginnings, not just for the atmosphere surrounding the island, but for other things as well. Fall meant the start of a new school year—going back to school and getting all new school supplies, meeting new friends, becoming involved in new activities, trying a hand at new classes. For me, fall at home meant other new beginnings, too—family beginnings, community beginnings, personal beginnings. Fall also brought about new beginnings around the island as well. As certain seasonal summer businesses closed for the colder months, including everything from boardwalk stores to restaurants to outdoor activity places, new businesses opened, always seeming to be sprouting up all over. And with new beginnings also came new goals. A new season represented a time for change, and it didn’t have to be changing something big or drastically. It was about changing the small things. The things that mattered to me most at the time, like pitching in around the house more, or going out for the school soccer team, or getting involved in the community, or finding a winter job. The Wildwoods also had new goals. There was always a new project in development, a new idea that the whole island patiently waited for, and the deadline date was the start of the new summer season. We’d watch the progression of the project all winter, seeing how it became more complete and one step closer to being finished with each passing month. That was the best part—watching. And it all started in the fall. But as some things changed in the fall, some things stayed the same, and I was okay with that because that’s one aspect I liked about growing up on a small island. No matter what changed, there was still always some sense of stability. I always knew I was going back to the same school, with the majority being familiar faces. I always attended the same annual events going on around town—ones that I anticipated and looked forward to every year. I always ate at the same, quality restaurants that still managed to stay open in the off months—the ones that were community favorites needed to stay open in order for us to make it through the winter. And the best part about the things that stayed the same was that these businesses, events and programs all gathered the Wildwoods community together. We were all in the same place most of the time because there were only a few certain places to go. It was like having one, big family. And perhaps that’s the point I’m trying to make: things can change, but still stay the same. And both are good. And just because I’m not home for majority of the fall doesn’t mean I’m not setting new goals for myself down here, at school. But, like I said, fall at home is my favorite time of the year, and I’ll be anticipating seeing Wildwood next weekend.

A traveling salesman’s car breaks down in the country, so he decides to call on the closest farmhouse. When the farmer opens the door, the salesman says, “Sir, my car died just up the road. Could I stay here for tonight?” The farmer says, “Sure, but I have a very handsome son and you’ll have to promise not to sleep with him.” “Excuse me,” says the salesman, “but I think I’m in the wrong joke.” Serving • Lunch • Dinner • Late Night Snacks
