For Great Homemade Italian Food, Carini’s Delivers Saturday was supposed to be date night, but a nasty cold descended upon our house, calling for a quarantine. We weren’t going anywhere. But what about dinner? The kids wanted pizza; we wanted a little bit something more. So of course, we called Carini’s in Wildwood Crest. Carini’s Ristorante and Pizzeria is great place for a quick lunch or a sit-down family meal in their cozy dining room. But their extensive menu is available for take-out, as well. That means you can enjoy Carini’s pizza and stromboli are crowd pleasers all the great homecooked food on their menu in the comfort of your own home... without all that troublesome cooking. Plus, everyone can get exactly what they like. So on Saturday, we passed around the menu and made the call. The kids wanted pizza, but they were feeling adventurous. So instead of sticking to old favorites like plain, or pepperoni, they wanted to try a Hawaiian pie with ham and pineapple. My husband feels pizza with pineapple is a sacrilege, so we compromised and ordered half plain. Our youngest still craved pepperoni, however, so she ordered a small Italian stromboli, as well. The grown-ups in the house had a harder time deciding. Carini’s has a huge menu with sandwiches, pastas, seafood, veal and other homemade Italian specialties like Eggplant Rollatini and Baked Ziti. We finally agreed on a Caesar salad and Chicken Francaise. Then we Something for everyone. settled into the living room for a Harry Potter movie marathon, while we waited for dinner. It arrived a short time later, piping hot and ready to eat. The pizza, of course, was a hit. Carini’s has been around for more than 20 years, and their pizza is an institution. The crust was golden brown and just crisp enough, topped with homemade sauce with a great sweet, tangy balance and bubbly mozzarella cheese. My older daughter and I loved the taste of the salty ham and sweet pineapple on top, while the rest of the family enjoyed the more traditional pie. The small stromboli was beautiful to behold, but way too big for our littlest girl to conquer alone. Luckily, we were all eager to help out. It was stuffed with quality cold cuts and mozzarella cheese, and it came with a side of Carini’s tomato sauce for dipping. The Caesar salad was as expected, a fresh bed of crunchy Romaine

with croutons and a creamy Caesar served on the side. The Chicken Francaise came with a fresh salad, which we ordered with the house vinaigrette, plus a Owners Papa Joe and Anthony Carini enjoy a meal together. side of pasta, so it was definitely big enough for two to share, especially after sampling the yummy pizza and stromboli appetizers. The chicken was delicious, three cutlets, dipped in an egg batter and sauteed in a white wine and butter sauce. It was just what the doctor ordered, tender, light, and delicious. It was a good a thing we didn’t order cannoli or cheese cake off the dessert menu because no one had room for dessert. We all agreed it was a great meal, and by the end of it we were all feeling much better. So we cleared our plates and relaxed over another a movie before heading off to bed. It wasn’t quite the date night my husband Wildwood Homecoming Queen Kirby Thornton and her friend Emily Tillotson catch up over a relaxing lunch. and I had planned, but thanks to Carini’s a night of take-out became something a little more special. In fact, it was so special, we plan on stopping by their dining room soon for another great meal. But this time, the kids will have to make other plans. IF YOU GO... A blonde goes into a library and cheerfully says, “Hi! I’m here to see the doctor!” In a stern, but hushed voice, the librarian says, “Miss, this is a library.” So the blonde lowers her voice and says, “Oh sorry!” Then whispers, “I’m here to see the doctor.”

F
or as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the remnants of the old North Wildwood railroad line that ran through Grassy Sound back in the day. From North Wildwood Boulevard, you can still see the tree line where the tracks were and two broken bridges. Supposedly, it was called the Mud Hen since the tracks sometimes shifted at high tide, stranding the train and its vacationing passengers until the rails could be set right. We wanted to do some exploring, so we parked the car on the side of Golf Club Road and started down the path into the woods that run behind Central Avenue in Burleigh. The path was wider and less overgrown than I had imagined, and clearly from the trash that littered the route we were not trailblazing. (My Laura Ingalls Wilder side was a bit disappointed…)

Still, it was interesting to get a glimpse into the landscape early visitors first saw as they crossed the wetlands, and it was cool to be walking in woods so close to Wildwood. The DooWop plastic palm tree may be just about the only native tree here nowadays, but 100 years ago, Wildwood got its name from the twisted trees that grew from beach to bay here. It felt like we were walking back in time. We could only go as far as the collapsed railroad bridge, built in 1918. For concrete, it didn’t last long, but I guess the ocean has its way no matter what we do. Same goes for the wooden docks that must have been torn from bay side houses until they crashed along the shore in the marsh.
What might last long, unfortunately, are the plastic bottles and huge pieces of Styrofoam that were piled up at the high tide line. Oh, and then there was the television…but there’s nothing good on during the day anyway.” Maureen Cawley

Wedding Planning Tips From
ThatsMyWedding.com 5 Tips for a Champagne Wedding on a Shoestring Budget The good news is this: there are many things you can do that will actually help you save money on your wedding. You can still have a beautiful day, without spending thousands of dollars in the process. Tip number one. Develop a budget. Be honest with yourself and your fiance about how much you can reasonably spend for your wedding. You can do some preliminary estimates by going to websites and seeing how much a three tiered wedding cake costs, a dramatic bridal bouquet, centerpieces, invitations, and so forth. Once you set a budget limit, stick to it. It’s easy to get carried away and decide that the darling tissue paper liners for the save the date cards are a must have and add only $100 to the total cost of the invitations. The problem is that if you keep adding $100 here and there you’ll end up thousands over budget. Tip number two. Decide what’s important to you. If you’ve always dreamed of a beautifully embroidered wedding gown with yards of lace then cut back in other areas. Or find a wedding gown that fulfills your dream but is second hand. Because most dresses are only worn once, opting for a ‘gently used’ gown is almost like purchasing a new one... for a whole lot less. Many bridal shops carry at least a small selection of used wedding dresses. You can also utilize online resources such as eBay. You will probably be surprised at the number of ‘designer’ gowns that are currently up for grabs, for a fraction of the price. Tip number three. Determine what you truly want. You might think that a sit down formal dinner is the only alternative for your wedding but what you really want is to share a wonderful meal with friends and family. There are alternatives to that sit down dinner. A buffet is a great idea and cuts costs, or what about an elegant boxed lunch picnic? Or perhaps consider a selection of appetizers instead of a full meal. Tip number four. Offer your guests the opportunity to help pay for your wedding as their wedding gift. Several of your friends could decide to pay for or supply the wine for your wedding. Others could participate in paying for the wedding cake, music, photographer, and so forth. This isn’t as crass as asking for cash donations directly and it makes your guests feel they made more of a contribution to your happy day than just showing up. Tip number five. Research, research, RESEARCH! There are many websites that provide information on low-cost weddings. Take the time to visit several of them. Chances are you will run across MANY great ideas that you may not have thought of on your own. Find more wedding help at www.thatsmywedding.com you can also follow us on twitter, facebook, and our blogger.

The Girl Around Town By Natalie Cooper
Starbucks started selling it’s holiday flavored coffee recently. This, alone, put me in a good mood today. When I walked in the store this morning and helped myself to a Grande Gingerbread Latte, I realized winter was officially around the corner—well, December, anyway. December is one of my favorite months. Despite the weather dropping a few more degrees to the point where you wake up in the morning to find frost gathered in the corners of your car windshield, and despite the sun going down a few hours earlier, and despite almost every business closing up, turning the island into a complete and utter ghost town, December does have its positives. For instance, the holidays, or Christmas, although sometimes the holidays can add a lot of unnecessary stress. But as I walked out of Starbucks and pondered over the possibility of when I should leave for home for Thanksgiving break, I happily jumped at the realization that the beginning of December was only a few days away. I have so many fond memories of growing up on the island in the winter, but one of my fondest has always taken place during the first week of December, every year, until high school. In the spirit of Christmas and the holiday season, the first week of December was always the week that people around the neighborhood started putting up decorations around their front yards and lining their houses with lights—and I’m not talking about the boring white lights—I’m talking about the big, colorful lights that scream, “Look at me!” This went for our house as well. We have a huge, leaning Mulberry Tree that covers the exterior of the front of our house. My dad would spend hours outside lining the branches of the tree with the biggest lights he could find at the store, along with the rest of the house, the fence we used to have, and the walkway leading to the front door. It would always be a fight between my mom and my brothers and me about the color of the lights, though. She always wanted the house to look nicely embroidered in white, contrasted against the black of the night sky. We, on the other hand, wanted the most obnoxious decorations you could find. And we always won. She always let us win. But when we were finally done decorating our house, my mom used to pile us in the car the Friday of this first week and take us sightseeing up and down the island. We started in Anglesea and worked our way down all the way to Diamond Beach. We didn’t have any particular stop in mind, we sort of just perused and awed and ogled at all the pretty houses with all of their different decorations. There was one house we looked forward to seeing every year, although I don’t particularly remember where it was. It was all of our favorites, and every year we talked about getting out of the car and meeting the people who lived inside, but obviously, we never did. It was a big house, though, with pine trees decorated as Christmas trees lining the perimeter of the property, a long, winding walkway with candy cane guardrails and Santa’s sleigh planted directly in front of the mailbox. My two little brothers always liked Santa’s sleigh—it was the absolute height of their trip. But I liked the huge, life-size figures of every single Disney character you could imagine standing up all over the front yard, mainly because I had an obsession with Minnie Mouse when I was little. I thought this was different. I had never seen a house decorated as extravagantly as this one, holding no contest compared to our house. So I returned every year since the first time I laid eyes on it, every first week of December, up until high school. And although I haven’t gone around the island Christmas light parading since I started high school, I’m thinking I may have to make an exception this year and bring back some good memories from my youth, even though I may be doing it a week early. So maybe Minnie Mouse will be in the front yard a little earlier this year than expected. You never know. Just saying...

Taking Flight:
The Israelis are developing an airport security device that eliminates the privacy concerns that come with full-body scanners at the airports. It’s an armored booth you step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on your person. Israel sees this as a win-win situation for everyone, with none of this crap about racial profiling. It will also eliminate the costs of a long and expensive trial. You’re in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter, an announcement: “Attention standby passengers — we now have a seat available on flight 6709. Shalom!”
