Harvesting October: Upcoming Events Preview The bikers have roared out of town, the firemen have taken down their ladders, and the last keg from the Irish Fall Festival has been drained. The 2010 events season in the Wildwoods is winding down, but it isn’t over yet. In fact, each of the four weekends in October will feature at least one major event. Here’s a rundown of what’s on tap: October 1-3 This Friday and Saturday, An Olde Time Italian Festival will be held at Fox Park. The celebration will feature crafts, games, rides, great Italian food and continuous free live entertainment. See www.soiwildwoods.com for all the details. The island will also play host to the Thunder On The Beach Monster Truck Race on Saturday and Sunday. Monster trucks will race for the “King of the Beach” title in quad wars, tough truck competition, stunts and more. Lined up to compete are: Gravedigger, Spiderman, Avenger, Brutus, Crustation, Gunslinger, Bad Habit, and Megasaurus. Visit www.ThunderMoto.com for tickets and more info. October 8-10 The action returns to the beach at Lincoln Avenue for the Fall Thunder in the Sand Pro/Am Motocross Races. AMA sanctioned races featuring beginners to pros. Head on back to www.ThunderMotor.com for competition times and tickets. October 15-17 One of the island’s signature events, Fabulous ‘50s Weekend, will be celebrating its seventh year... with a very special “Twist.” This year marks the 50th anniversary of the dance craze that took the nation by storm, first introduced by Chubby Checker at the old Rainbow Room. Jerry Blavat will host the annual ‘50s Record Hop at the Convention Center on Friday, followed by a street fair at Fox Park on Saturday, and the big concert on Saturday night. Checker will perform, in addition to Dee Dee Sharp (“Slow Twistin”), Joey Dee and The Starliters (“Peppermint Twist”), and The Marvelettes (“Twistin Postman”). For ticket info and further details, visit www.gwcoc.com. October 22-23 Over the past half-decade, Fabulous ‘50s Weekend has closed out the Wildwoods’ annual event schedule; this year, that honor will go to a brand new event. The Inaugural Wildwoods Country Music Weekend will kick off with the Starlight Roadhouse Dance Party on Friday night at the Convention Center. A free country festival will be held at Fox Park on Saturday, followed by the highlight of the weekend - a concert at the Convention Center headlined by Sawyer Brown that will also feature American Idol star Josh Gracin and duo Bomshel. For more information, check out www.WildwoodsCountry.com. ********************* Can we see your photos (“old” and “new”)? We have a number of special features lined up for the coming weeks, including an offshoot website project and a series of looks back at the Summer of 2010. Wildwood Memories & Nostalgia will debut at the end of October, after the final events weekend wraps up. The new site will host hundreds of profiles of Wildwood businesses and landmarks, past and present. To share your vintage and/or more recent photos and memories with us, drop us a line at wildwood365@gmail.com. We will have more info on these projects in the coming weeks...

what’s her problem?? Tom at Casey’s on Third
Kim Bishop at Casey’s on Third
As this proud happy father poses for a photo-op with his barracuda, his daughter looks like she’d rather be anywhere but there... enjoying the moment with her dad. See if you can guess why. Is it because: a.) The man next to her is not her father, he abducted her. b.) The barracuda actually jumped in to the boat and attacted her. c.) She just found out her mother was killed. d.) She was suffering from a heat stroke.

what’s her problem?? Solution from page 31
“Cut for a Cause” Helps Raise over $5000 for Life Rolls On Cape May, New Jersey - September 28th, 2010 - After raising well over $5000 for Life Rolls On (LRO) Todd deSatnick of deSatnick Real Estate LLC shaved his head last Saturday night at the 5th Annual Life Rolls On East Coast Golf Tournament. The haircut which quickly became known as “Cut for A Cause” was spurred into action after a group of volunteers for LRO challenged deSatnick to cut his hair off if he could raise $5000 in less than 48 hours. The fund raising campaign was supported by personal invitations, phone calls, e-mails, flyers and Facebook. deSatnick never had a “buzz” cut and hasn’t had his hair short in well over twenty years and was somewhat known for his long curly hair around town. “My friends have often joked with me about trying to shave my head but this seemed like a great opportunity to help with my brother with his fund raising efforts.” said deSatnick. Todd’s brother, Chad deSatnick, suffered a spinal cord injury while surfing in Cape May nine years ago and has become extremely involved with LRO. LRO is a subsidiary of the Christopher Reeve Foundation that has able-bodied individuals working in concert with those with spinal cord injury, to motivate each other with the inspirational message of achievement in the face of extreme adversity. Programs such as “They Will Surf Again” have become a staple of LRO. “They Will Surf Again” utilizes a surfing experience to allow those that have suffered spinal cord injuries to enjoy a day in the surf while enjoying a sense of freedom with the ocean.
Koral Wira, 14, was fishing with her parents and a friend near Venice, Fla., when a barracuda went for her dad’s bait and ended up biting her instead. Her dad, Rob Parker, submitted these photos and Wira told the story. After anchoring the boat 4 miles off shore, dad baited his rod with herring. Wira switched seats to get out of the hot sun, and watched as her dad cast. Moments later, she heard a splash and saw a long silver flash in the air. A barracuda jumped from the water and opened its mouth. As it hit her left arm, it clamped down with razor teeth. After the barracuda released her arm and fell to the floor of the boat, Wira’s dad killed the barracuda with a filet knife.

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

Two campers are hiking in the woods when one is bitten on the rear end by a rattlesnake. “I’ll go into town for a doctor,” the other says. He runs ten miles to a small town and finds the town’s only doctor, who is delivering a baby. “I can’t leave,” the doctor says. ‘But here’s what to do. Take a knife, cut a little X where the bite is, suck out the poison and spit it on the ground.” The guy ruins back to his friend, who is in agony. ‘What did the doctor say?” the victim asks. “He says you’re gonna die.”

The Girl Around Town By Natalie Cooper I couldn’t wait to get home this past weekend, and neither could my friends. We couldn’t wait to get home so much that we left late Thursday night after all of our classes, just to be sure the eighthour car ride back wouldn’t drag us down and take it’s toll on us for Friday. We’ve heard stories about this weekend and knew we needed to be on our A-game in order to keep up through Monday. We’ve been waiting for years to finally be able to experience Irish Weekend fully, and now that we’re all 21, we just couldn’t wait. I woke up Friday morning to three missed calls from my friend. She told me to get my act together and get ready because I was meeting her down at the festival by two o’clock at the latest. This was fine because I was ready to get started—and so it began. One of the best advantages to having the Irish Festival take place a few blocks away from my house is that I don’t have to drive there. Parking is miserable—so miserable that there were hardly any spots all the way up to eight blocks away on my street on 9th Ave. So I left my house and walked to my friend’s, meeting up with her on the way and making our way to the festival. I do remember the Irish Festival when I was younger. There really is something for people of all ages, not just the drinking and debauchery coming from the bars when the sun goes down. I remembered that when I approached the scene and saw the tents set up in the middle of the streets for blocks, carrying green t-shirts and Irish memorabilia and hand-made arts and crafts. The restaurants and food places were mobbed. People dressed in green were walking everywhere and parading the streets in their entireties. This was the Irish Festival I remembered. Except it was better. Instead of walking around like we’d usually do, we went straight to the bar. Westy’s was our first stop, and it was already mobbed. Instead of taking a seat at the bar, we stood and drank our beers, while watching the game they had on TV and standing shoulder to shoulder with the people next to us. This was my first taste of the Irish Fest, and I liked it already. Five beers in and five hours later, we decided it was time to head home for a little powernap and rejuvenation in order to come back that night. Around 9’clock, my brother, Brandon, knocked on my bedroom door. “It’s t-shirt time,” he said, quoting the TV show, “Jersey Shore.” This, naturally, put me in the mood to party, so I got ready and went downstairs to join Bran and my other brother and the rest of the crew walking down with us to continue the drinking. When my brothers found out that I’ve been 21 for an entire summer and have never had a Tully Nut from the Number 1 Tavern, or that I’ve never even been to the Number 1 Tavern, they knew instantly that would be our first stop. It was all a blur after that drink. What they say about it is true—all you need is one. But even after being forced to chug the Tully Nut in the Welcome Irish Weekmatter of five minutes, I certainly couldn’t stop then. Drinks at the Number 1 turned into shots at Keenan’s. We waited in line for 20 minutes to be let into the outside bar because the bar was at Closed 9/22 & 9/25 maximum capacity, but the wait was worth it. The outside bar was mobbed. I’ve Open Fri.-Sat.-Sun. 10/4 & a10/5 never seen so many people in Wildwood before,10/3, and I seemed to know lot of them. Keenan’s turned into the place to be, so we decided to stay majority of the night. COUPON About three whiskey shots in, I thought this was going to be our last stop. I was mistaken. Little by little the crowd started dwindling. I knew it was around 2:30 AM, so I figured people went home. But what I didn’t know was that they went to close the bar at Echos. Thankfully, my brothers, being a little older and3:30-5:30pm in their late 20’s, wanted to go home. I pleaded no contest to this, as long as we stopped at got something to eat. startingI at don’t remember much about the rest of the night, except that we decided to have pizza. A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later, there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says “What the hell was that all about?”
