CROSS EYE DOMINATION
HOW TO CURE CROSS EYE DOMINATION When shouldering the gun to your right shoulder and aiming with your left eye being your master eye, this is cross eye domination. It is the same story if you shoulder the gun to your left shoulder and aim using your right eye as your master eye. When doing so the line of the gun and the line of the sight are not in line (see the illustration), and as you are not looking straight down the barrel you will often miss your target. This problem has often been solved either by closing the dominant eye, using a piece of cardboard covering the dominant eye, or even using a pair of glasses blinding the dominant eye with tape or a marker. These solutions have serious disadvantages:

Cross eye domination can in most cases be “cured” by using Wiley X protective eyewear. Wiley X Ballistic, ANSI Z87.1-2010 and EN.166 rated lenses provide a true spatial relationship of objects in the field of view. By mounting a smoke grey colored lens in front of the dominant eye and a light rust colored lens (contrast enhancement color) in front of the other eye, the domination will in most cases change to the other eye and thereby solve the cross eye problem. My son has a cross eye dominance problem and when shooting he would normally have to shoot with one eye closed. By changing the lens in the shooting glasses to one black, one orange, it has shifted the master eye to the good side, looking down the barrel and he is now able to shoot with both eyes open allowing him to get better results. Wearing the adapted glasses, I set up a clay pigeon trap with the clay coming towards us. I thought that if I put skeet choke in, it would give him a bit of confidence. Once I had him shooting the clay, time after time, I screwed in a full choke and it didn’t seem to make any difference, he was still hitting every time. I then turned the trap round with the clay going away from us, it meant the target was 10 cm wide and 2,5 cm thick. Still shooting full choke. We stood beside the trap and stepped back 5 meters every 5 shots. We ended up 35 meters away from the trap, before he missed one. I must say, it was fantastic to see the smile on his face, when he was hitting every clay, when shooting with both eyes open.

I was posted at the end of a pheasant drive. In the distance I could see the dog handlers starting the drive. The drive was long, and to block the wind I tucked my neck in my jersey, put on my cap and my hood. The only thing left open in my face was my eyes, but they were covered by a pair of Wiley X shooting glasses. The drive was slowly approaching. Several pheasants were shot in the drive. When the dog handlers were within 80-100 meters of me, a pheasant took off and the sound of gunfire broke the silence. The shooter had not seen that I was on a post in front of him, and he shot directly towards me. The hail cracked against the tree behind me and at my face. The shocked shooter ran to me. Luckily I could inform him that in spite of the tremendous shock I got, when the hail cracked against my glasses, I was alright. Of course the experience was no fun for neither of us. I am sure that if I had not been wearing protective shooting glasses, my eyes would probably have taken permanent damage. As a final closure of the day the organizer of the hunt announced that from that day on, shooting glasses would always be required in the hunts to come. My appeal to all is – wear shooting glasses – they can save your sight…

My Wiley X shooting glasses probably saved my eyes. I was invited to a small game hunt nearby the German city Gräpel. I was excited about the hunt, because the area usually offers plenty of game. The weather was against us - a thick fog hanging over the area. Due to the weather the safety on the parole had been increased, so low shooting was banned – even so it almost ended fatally for me. I was placed on a bridge over a channel with a railing as my only cover. After a slow start the drive turned in our favour. The fog was so thick that I could see neither hunters nor beaters, and a deer passed close by me without even noticing me. Suddenly a bunch of pheasants took off and the shots fell close, I could feel how pellets hit my jacket, my face and my Wiley X shooting glasses. Luckily for me I had acquired my shooting glasses earlier in the autumn. I don’t know if the glasses saved my eyes, but luckily I don’t have to think about that now. To me they saved my eyes, and I will NEVER go hunting or clay shooting without them again.

I was on a hunt by the North Sea in Denmark. The hunters were walking in a straight line when two deer suddenly jumped up and started running towards me. At the moment the deer were passing me a hunter on my left fired his shotgun. I quickly threw myself to the ground screaming at him to stop firing. When I got up again the hunter fired yet another shot at a different deer, as it passed near me. He missed the deer but not my left eye. The shot reduced the sight on my left eye by 95%. After several surgical operations my eye healed successfully but my eyesight never improved. The pellet is still embedded behind my eye but luckily it didn’t reach my brain, which would have made things far more serious. Since the accident I have often suffered from headaches and I have to wear sunglasses most of the time. I’m getting used to having only one good eye, but it demands a lot more movement of my head when trying to get an overview. I have not lost my passion for hunting but I have had to teach myself to shoot from the opposite side. In the future I will always be wearing safety approved shooting eyewear to secure my remaining eyesight, if disaster should strike again.

I am an official tracking dog handler and I have on average 75 searches per year. The game we seek is both wounded game from a hunt or from traffic collisions. In the fall of 2014 I was on a routine search for a wounded red deer. Everything went according to plan and the dog had contact with the wounded deer. I ran after the red deer through the woods when I suddenly and without warning got a branch in my left eye. The next day I could not see anything with my left eye. After a visit to the doctor’s and to the hospital it was concluded that I had damaged my iris. I barely avoided an eye operation and after the ophthalmologist’s statement it was pure luck that I didn’t have further complications. I have learned my lesson - I never go hunting or search for wounded game without my Wiley X Eyewear.
