College of Law
Kenneth D. Peterson Jr. graduated from The College of William & Mary, with a bachelor’s degree with high honors in government, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 1976. In 1980, he graduated from Willamette University College of Law. Peterson actively practiced law in Oregon from 1980 to 1989, when he elected inactive status due to the demands of his business interests. He founded Columbia Aluminum Corporation in 1987 to acquire and
reopen a closed aluminum smelter in Washington state. He subsequently founded Columbia Ventures, which acquired and started numerous businesses in the United States and abroad, including building a greenfield smelter in Iceland in 1998. Currently, the major focus of Columbia Ventures is the telecommunications industry, where its largest holding, Hibernia Networks, recently completed laying a transatlantic fiber optic submarine cable designed to provide the lowest latency between New York and London. Peterson has also given back to Willamette in a way that has enhanced the education of each of our graduates. He has generously endowed the Ken and Claudia Peterson Professorship, currently held by Norman R. Williams, as well as the Center for Constitutional Government.

Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient Kate Brown Governor, State of Oregon Kate Brown is Oregon’s 38th governor. She previously served as Oregon’s secretary of state, where she was a leader in increasing government transparency and accountability.
to allow parents to stay home with their sick children without fear of losing their jobs. Brown has also been a longtime leader in advancing civil rights and marriage equality. In 2007, she helped to pass the Oregon Equality Act, which prohibits discrimination in employment and housing on the basis of sexual orientation, and she was instrumental in passing Oregon’s Family Fairness Act, which legally recognizes committed same-sex relationships as domestic partnerships.
Before serving as secretary of state, Brown served for 17 years in the state legislature: five years in the Oregon House of Representatives and 12 years in the Oregon State Senate. In 2004, Brown made history when she became the first woman in Oregon history to serve as senate majority leader, after being elected by her colleagues.
Before running for public office, Brown practiced family and juvenile law. She taught at Portland State University, worked with the Juvenile Rights Project and co-founded the Oregon Women’s Health and Wellness Alliance, which has been leading efforts to support women’s health for more than 20 years.
In 2007, she successfully spearheaded legislation that The Oregonian called the “state’s most sweeping package of ethics reforms in 34 years.” Brown successfully helped pass Family and Medical Leave, making Oregon one of the first states in the nation
Brown grew up in Minnesota and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. She received her law degree and certificate in environmental law from Lewis & Clark Law School.
Honorary Degree Recipients Marie Watt ’90
Alex L. Parks Distinguished Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts
Symeon Symeonides is the Alex L. Parks Distinguished Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus at Willamette’s College of Law. He received his first two law degrees from the University of Thessaloniki, graduating first in both classes. He also holds an LLM and a doctoral degree (SJD) from Harvard, and honorary Doctor of Laws and PhD degrees. Symeonides has taught at several American and European universities, including the Sorbonne and The Hague Academy of International Law. He has published 26 books and more than 120 articles, in seven languages. Reviewers have called him “the world’s leading expert on comparative conflicts law,” “a conflicts giant” and “the father of codification,” and his publications “brilliant,” “engrossing,” “masterful” and “indispensable.” His work has been honored with four scholarly prizes and cited by the supreme courts of the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel (22 times). Symeonides has drafted codifications for three states and the European Union, participated in drafting two international conventions, and provided legislative advice to four foreign governments. He is president of the International Association of Legal Science, past president of the American Society of Comparative Law and the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Marie Watt is a nationally recognized Portland-based mixed media artist whose work explores human stories and ritual implicit in everyday objects. Watt received her degree in speech communications and art from Willamette University in 1990 and earned a master of fine arts in painting and printmaking from Yale University in 1996. Watt’s work explores the historical and contemporary intersections of indigenous and Western/European cultures and draws from Seneca and indigenous principles, proto-feminist role models, oral tradition, biography and history. In 2004, an exhibit of her work at the National Museum of the American Indian included Blanket Stories, a sculpture made of two towers of wool blankets, many given to Native Americans in trade by the Hudson's Bay Company during the 19th century. One of the blanket columns is now at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. Another of Watt’s works, created in sewing circles with Willamette faculty, staff and students, hangs in Ford Hall. Watt is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. The book Marie Watt: Lodge offers a comprehensive view of her work and features life stories told through blankets, printmaking, sculpture and digital media.

2015-16 Alumni Award Winners Today’s graduates enter a community of accomplished, diligent and mindful alumni. Bearcats around the world continue to pursue their own hopes and goals while united by their shared experiences and Willamette’s enduring ethos of service.
D I S T I N G U I S H E D A L U M N I C I TAT I O N Given for exemplary performance or contribution in any field, cause or life pursuit.
Roy Chapin ’61
The following awards are made by the Willamette University Alumni Association Board of Directors and come from alumni nominations.
Distinguished Alumni Citation An international consultant in animal nutrition, Chapin has dedicated his life to making the world a better place by reducing hunger through improved animal agricultural production. By improving farm animals’ nutrition in more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern and Central Europe, he helped increase the milk and protein they produce for human consumption. Previously, while serving in the U.S. Air Force as officer in charge of space nutrition research, Chapin helped develop space foods for NASA. Chapin has served two terms as president of the Oregon Feed, Seed, and Suppliers’ Association and is a charter diplomate of the College of Nutrition of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists.
Nancy Weeks Federici ’60 Distinguished Alumni Citation Federici’s entire adult life has been devoted to music, community activism and philanthropy. Her Willamette degree in music education and her graduate work in 1963 in vocal performance and music led her to teach vocal music and training. She soloed, sang in musical ensembles, performed in musical theater and conducted choral groups and church choirs. She also worked tirelessly to better her community of St. Helens, Oregon, working in politics, schools and the retail community and on local and state service boards. In return, her community honored her with awards including Young Careerist, Oregon Retailer of the Year, Woman of the Year and Citizen of the Year. Federici continues to work in music in her retirement in Seattle.
Catharine Newbury ’66 Distinguished Alumni Citation Having majored at Willamette in political science and French, Newbury did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. She then conducted research on colonial statebuilding and the complicated processes of decolonization in Rwanda and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, becoming a close witness to some of the most painful events in recent African history. She has also written widely on the origins, processes and aftermath of political turmoil in the Great Lakes Region of central Africa. Through her publications, Newbury has sought to create deeper understanding of tragic events often misunderstood in the West. She has taught a wide range of courses on women, peasant politics and development issues at several universities. Newbury has served as president of the multidisciplinary African Studies Association and as academic director of the Five College African Scholars Program. She retired from Smith College in 2012 and lives with her husband in Vermont.

Amanda Helfer ’08
Donald G. Brown ’68 and Carol Anne Brown ’67
Young Alumni Leadership Award At Willamette, Helfer learned to lead through service to her community — an ethos she has put into practice ever since graduating. Through her work with AmeriCorps and the United Way of Larimer County (Colorado), she rallied thousands of volunteers to actively address and confront poverty, including mentoring at-risk youth, supporting lowincome housing residents and championing disadvantaged teens at a local safe house. Helfer also engaged volunteers to help their neighbors affected by wildfires and floods in 2012 and 2013. Recently, Helfer earned a master’s degree in public administration from the Evans School for Public Policy & Governance at the University of Washington and aims to put her commitment and compassion to work for a global humanitarian organization. Currently, she researches wage policy issues in Seattle.
Sparks Medallion The Browns have been active and loyal supporters of Willamette for almost 50 years, working with alumni relations, development, admissions and the President’s Office to further the mission of the university. Don received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science from Willamette, while Carol Anne — the daughter of alumnus Bill Smullin ’29, in whose honor Smullin Hall is named — studied here for two years before transferring to Stanford. Don is the retired dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento, and Carol Anne is the retired executive director of the Smullin Foundation. Don has served on Willamette’s Board of Trustees since 2004, including time as vice chair, and the Browns regularly host trustee, alumni and admissions gatherings in their home. In addition, they are leading supporters of Willamette Academy, the university’s academic program to help students from historically underrepresented communities advance to higher education.
Peter Wallmark ’68 Sparks Medallion A role model for alumni participation in the life of Willamette, Wallmark freely gives his time, energy and talents to various alumni association boards, committees and activities. With a wealth of business experience — both from his 35-year career as a senior executive at companies such as Nike, and currently as a certified executive coach — Wallmark is a frequent presenter at the alumni association’s career events, as well as a mentor for the Atkinson Graduate School of Management’s career management program. A member of the alumni association’s Portland Chapter committee, Wallmark also served two terms on the association’s board of directors.

Academic Regalia The style of academic regalia most commonly worn in the United States dates back to colonial times, although it was not formally adopted until near the end of the 19th century, when it was chosen as appropriate attire by the Intercollegiate Commission. It has remained the general standard in America since, although some variations occur at individual institutions. THE GOWN The gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, because it covers any dress of rank or social standing. In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions allow holders of doctoral degrees to wear robes in the university’s colors. Gowns have pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, long closed sleeves with a slit in the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, and full bell double sleeves for the doctor’s degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctor’s degree, the gown is often faced down the front with velvet,

THE CAP When Roman law freed a slave, it accorded the privilege of wearing a cap. And so the academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. The cap of scholarship is square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. THE HOOD The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college from which the degree was granted.

Willamette University President Stephen E. Thorsett was raised in Salem. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics, summa cum laude, from Carleton College and his doctoral degree in physics from Princeton University. As an astrophysicist, he helped develop two of NASA’s orbiting telescopes, and he and his team discovered the oldest known planet, called Methuselah. He has held research and teaching positions at Caltech, Princeton and the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was dean of the science division and founder of their California Teach program for training new math and science teachers.
Since 2011, Thorsett has been the president of Willamette University, where as a teenager he worked in the dishroom. At Willamette, his goals include strengthening the university’s historic connections to Oregon and the Northwest, solidifying its position as a leader in our region for rigorous, high quality undergraduate, management and legal education, and raising the resources needed to provide access to a Willamette education for the most talented high school graduates, regardless of their financial means. Thorsett lives in Salem with his wife, Rachel, also a physicist. Their daughter, Laura, attends Harvard College.

In Memoriam Bill “Dev” Devery
James Hitchman ’54
June 19, 1933–July 31, 2015
November 17, 1932–November 18, 2015
Bill “Dev” Devery, professor emeritus of psychology, taught at Willamette from 1970 until his retirement in 1992. After his retirement, he remained involved in Willamette through teaching and learning with the Institute for Continued Learning.
Jim was a member of Willamette’s alumni board and served as a trustee from 1977 to 1979. Perhaps his most enduring contribution to campus culture was in his role as formation leader for his class in four Freshman Glee victories, a feat shared with only one other class in the 96-year history of Glee at Willamette.
Leslie Bandfield
Dale Weight
September 24, 1958–August 1, 2015 Leslie worked at Willamette from 1987 until retiring from her position as document management tech II in 2014. She maintained very close ties with Willamette friends and colleagues in the months between her retirement and her death.
Richard Wright
Dale Weight became dean of the Atkinson Graduate School of Management in 1990 following a successful career that included working for the Federal Reserve Bank, as well as in private banking. He retired from Willamette in 1998.
