MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE 2
We can provide a professional advocacy service which is independent of NHS and Social Services and separate from other parts of the Charity. Advocates help the client to express their own views and needs to the people who make decisions about their lives. Advocates are here to: • Listen to you and respect your decisions • Represent your views to other agencies • Find out about services and benefits that you can apply for • Act on your behalf and protect your rights as an individual We work with adults living in Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and surrounding rural areas who have a mental health diagnosis, and with formal and informal patients. The person can contact us themselves, or be referred by GP, Trust staff, social services or carers.
It is important that the person feels that advocacy is beneficial to them, and agrees to our involvement. We can signpost people to other specialist services as appropriate. The advocate will then work in partnership with the client until the issue is resolved or the client decides on a different course of action. People who are subject to the Mental Health Act 1983, ie. Sectioned, under guardianship, or on Community Treatment Orders, have the right to receive help from an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA). We are here to help people understand the law as it applies to them and explain their rights of the individual.
