Welcome
to Bali
Bali the fabled island resort, needs no introduction, but the fact is that every destination, even the world’s favourite island (as rated by Travel and Leisure readers many times) continues to grow and change and Bali is no different.
•
Everyone assumes that change is always for the bad but we strongly disagree, the changes to Bali are for good and bad, and some of the good is really good, making Bali an even better destination!
•
The ‘bad’ as judged by very subjective measures, does need to be addressed, with development on arable land, obstruction to scenery, poor traffic conditions, parking, and other very serious issues very much in the forefront. Issues such as security and safety will never go away anywhere in the world and just need to be professionally addressed, and the Bali Hotels Association is a world leader in addressing them. The ‘good’ however is more than a compensation for anything negative that’s happened to the island and should be appreciated and enjoyed in full! Some of the things we think are notable are: • The opening of outstanding new hotels and resorts which are of world standard. See the directory section of this publication for more details.

•
The opening of more activities, more parks, more venues for family holidays. Bali now has an Elephant Park, a Safari Park, a Bird Park, a Zoo, a Botanical Garden, Treetop Adventures, a Waterslide Park and Balloon Ride to name just a few. More than enough to keep the most active kids happy. The are even more adventures to be had in the sporting world with a new Golf Course, more rafting, diving, riding, surfing, sailing, snorkelling and cycling companies than even before mostly providing really high standards of operation, but always ask your concierge first, to make sure you don’t end up with a poor operator. The traditional arts have not gone away but been housed in more luxurious museums, galleries and workshops. The dancing is better organised and better presented. The temples are still leaving visitors awed and humbled, the processions still leave visitors speechless (and their cameras full!). Then there is the culinary scene which has reached new heights both within the hotels and in the independent restaurants, and we enclose a list for you to try as many as possible! And finally the clubs and nightlife which Bali has now became world famous for are going full speed ahead.
Read on and find out for yourself the marvellous things awaiting you in Bali, all you have to do is book one of BHA’s outstanding hotels, and the holiday of a lifetime awaits.

Bali is My Life
As you drive through the villages of Bali you will see one thing probably more than anywhere else on earth. But you’ll have to look closely because sometimes it’s easy to miss. Almost every wall, every gate is made from carved stone. The people of Bali don’t just display their art for tourism – they live it – and the closer you look the more you’ll see! Not just stone carving but wood carving, masks, paintings and weaving. The artists of Bali and their work are everywhere, when into the fabric of life on the island. But it is the stone carving that creates the whole atmosphere, it is the background to everthing that happens in Bali – the processions, the funerals, the pagenty of life, and the ordinary acts of life. It starts in temples but spreads to every house, overy compound, every wall, until you can’t fail to be amazed at how much the Balinese are dedicated to enhancing their own environment. This is a lesson we can all learn, so take time to look at the way Balinese villages are planned and constructed. Each part is carefully aligned to give balance to their lives, the balance between God, Man and Nature that the Balinese call Tri Hita Karana. This balance is carefully preserved in each family compound where there is a family temple and in each village where the alignment of streets and houses reflects the balance as well. So take time to look and you will see a balance of life lost in so many cultures but preserved in Bali......in stone.
Stone sculptor Wayan Cemul is one of Indonesia’s national treasures. Even at 86 years old his spirit retains the youthfulness of the artist. Recognised as one of Bali’s most famous sculptors, he was the sole student of sculptor Kadir and developed his own unique primitive style, encouraged by foreign luminaries like Donald Fried, Arie Smit, Han Snel and Rudolf Bonnet.. He has been designing fanciful primitive art stone carvings for many years. His work has been picked graces galleries and gardens in many countries and his work has impacted many younger stone carvers. Now his primitive style can be seen in many places in Bali and around the world. Dragons, goblins, cute animals and downright scarey faces are the trademarks of his work although he also designs sculptures of great beauty. I Wayan has visited other countries but will always return to Bali. Now his traveling days are almost over, but Bali will always be his home.

Bali There is no point in going to Bali if you miss the temples. They are the centre of the religius and cultural life – and magnificant and inspiring places to visit as well. Here’s just a small sampling of the hundreds of temples across the island.
Besakih- The Mother Temple
This majestic temple complex nestles in the foot of Mount Agung. It is the place where the Hindus come for blessing and the tourists come for its unique ancient architecture and atmosphere. It is the centre of Balinese Hindu life and the source of spiritual energy. It is a must see on any visitors agenda Besakih is an extensive complex with 23 temples, the largest temple inside the complex is Pura Penataran Agung that is dedicated to Shiva. then there are Pura Kiduling Kreteg, representing Brahma, the Creator and Pura Batu Madeg, representing Visnu, the Preserver. Those three manifestations of God are known as Tri Murti. Besides those temples there are also temples representing Panca Dewata, God’s five manifestations that protect four directions and the centre. On the right and left side of Pura Penataran Agung, there are clusters of temples called pedarman where people come to pray and give offerings for their ancestors. The complex is vast and hilly. So it really is necessary to get a guide who is capable and has good knowledge about the temple otherwise you will not really appreciate it. Since there are so many things one can observe and appreciate in the temple complex. For example, one can marvel at the carvings which tell some epic stories such as Ramayana and Mahabrata which decorate the temple traditional architecture and the Kamasan style paintings which are very old. The temple is located in Klungkung Regency and is the inheritance for all Balinese. Besakih has its own

unique charm and it is believed that the temple area is filled with mystical supernatural power. In 1963, when Mount Agung erupted, Besakih was the only place which survived the lava even though it nestles at the very foot of the mountain. It is the dream of every Balinese to pray and give offerings in the temple, which has a very important role in the history of Balinese civilization.
Tanah Lot – Temple in the Ocean
When the sun is setting down and creates the mixture of magenta and orange colors on the sky and the tide rise, the beauty of Tanah Lot happens to be a very spectacular sight. The temple is one of the seven famous sea temples in Bali. It is said that each of the temples was to be within eyesight of the next and were made to give a level of protection to the island. Dated in 16th century, the shrine was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha (a priest from Java) during his travel through south-west coast of Bali. He saw a small island nearby the main land where spent the night. The next morning he asked the local fisherman to build a shrine to worship God of the Sea on the rock as he felt holy atmosphere on the rocky island. Tanah Lot means Land in the Middle of the Sea, is part of Tabanan Regency in the western part of Bali. It is only 33km from Denpasar. The temple is considered as one of the most sacred places in Bali. It is not accessible to visitors but pilgrimage only. However, superb views of the temple backed by the glowing sunset can be seen from so many points nearby. There is a line of souvenir shops and also a line of cafés where Es Kelapa Muda (Fresh young coconut with ice)
and variety of food and beverages are served. Some cafes even have panoramic sunset views from their terraces. When it is ebb tide, the crowd is usually centered at the beach between the rock where the temple laid and the cliff of the main land. If it is so, caves which part of the cliff become another famous attraction in the site. It is said that a giant snake lives in one of the caves. It is also believed that at the base of the rocky island there are poisonous sea snakes guarding the temple from evil spirit and intruders. The myth said that the snake was the scarf of Nirartha.
Uluwatu
Uluwatu, Ulu means land’s end and watu means rock, is about 45 minutes drive from Nusa Dua or one and half hours drive from Kuta toward Jimbaran. There are
jungles, cliffs, and the vast deep blue ocean. The southern tip of Bali is very famous for its magical sunset backed by the temple located on the edge of the steep cliffs. Uluwatu temple, its original name is Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is one of the Sad Khayangan (the six most important temples in Bali). It is dedicated to Rudra, the God of the storm, the wind, and the hunt. The temple is one of that Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh, a priest from Java who came to Bali in A.D. 1546, had built. The temple and its surroundings considered as one of the many sacred sites in the island. Best visited early in the morning or at sunset Uluwatu is a truly magical place perched on the very edge of the island. Not to be missed.

Bali is My Life
If you are scared of Balinese food, don’t be. The myths and legends about ‘oriental’ food are plenty, mostly revolving around monkey brains, beetles, locusts and the normally discarded parts of certain animals and fish. This is mostly nonsense and is anyway in China not Indonesia. In Bali the food is delicious, based on rice and meat or rice and fish in the main and you can’t go wrong with the usual fare of ‘nasi goreng’, ‘mie ayam’, sate, and ‘gado-gado’! But if you want to get more adventurous you can, just make sure that your choice of restaurant is 100% hygenic. Then ask for help to select what you think you may like. The chicken dishes and fish are usually the best but Bali, not being Moslem, likes its pork and there are some wonderful suckling pig restaurants around. Bon Appetite!
Ibu Mangku has run her Warung Nasi Ayam Kedawatan since 1984. Although the original family run warung has expanded in size and she has opened branches in Seminyak and Kapal, the quality remains unchanged. Everything is still cooked on wood fires and it is all cooked under her strict supervision in her original Kedawatan home. Selling the authentic food of her district she is the forerunner of many other warungs in Kedawatan, just outside Ubud. Her food is famous and people come from far and near to try it. Some people love her food so much that they eat there almost every day. She loves Bali. It is her home her family her place of business and her spiritual support. It is where she wants to be.

Bali is My Life
Bali’s rivers are not wild, they are exciting and have the occasional burst of adrenallin, but they are very pretty to float down. That was what one or two intrepid rafters discovered twenty years ago and what thousands have been enjoying since. The whole topography of Bali is based on the huge bulk of Mount Agung dominating the landscape with everything literally going downhill from there. This means that Bali is divided by rivers flowing down from the holy mountain. Many of them in deep valleys carved over the millenia and now overgrown by lush vegation. The perfect tropical rafting rivers. Typically the day on the river is a combination between fun, exercise and just sheer wonder at the beauty of nature, with the banter and knowledge of the guide and mentor an essential element in the success of the day. It well worth trying, many go for multiple trips it’s so much fun.
Dolphin the white water rafter works for Sobek White Water Rafting in Sayan just out of Ubud. For eight years he has guided thousands of happy tourists down the twisting and turning rapids of the Ayung River. When he was a boy in school he dreamed of working on the river and even after so many years he loves his job. “it is my hobby and my job” he says beamingly. Where did he get his name? Everyone at Sobek has an English style name as it helps the tourists to feel comfortable and to identify them. He became dolphin because he swam so well and so much while he was in training. He loves Bali because it has given him a good life and it is where he wants to be. Bali sustains him and keeps his life beautiful.

Sport To some Bali is surf, surf, surf and that certainly isn’t wrong. To be synonymous with the world surf scene isn’t half a bad reputation. But there’s a lot more to Bali than that sports wise. Let’s start with golf where there are five great courses: Bali Golf & Country Club in the very heart of Nusa Dua, Nirwana on the southern coast, the fabulous Handara up in the volcanos, the little nine hole Grand Bali Beach in Sanur and the new kid on the block, New Kuta on the Bukit. All worth a round – or two. Then let’s move on to sailing where we have cruises heading off not only to Komodo but to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida and just cruising the waters looking for dolphins. Of course many boats also provide diving expertise and equiptment and this is a booming sport with some great dive sites around the island. Increasingly riding is becoming popular as stables open all over the island providing a great (and natural!) way to see the island.

Leisure
Sticking to natural, there’s a quite a few companies offering cycling tours as well, which take you through villages, jungles and past temples, stopping of course for drinks and photos. A great idea – especially if you are going downhill! The beaches at Benoa and some parts of Sanur provide the more motorised sports with waterskiing, jetskiing, parachute flights and so on in profusion. A word of warning though – check the operator thoroughly for licences, some have not very good safety records. What else does Bali offer? Birdwatching and butterfly hunting in and around Ubud. Climbing Mount Agung. Trekking the national park, and walking virtually everywhere. You can play tennis in most hotels, head to Waterbom for the waterslides, go go karting on a minitrack and when all of that’s done hit the pool for a gentle swim. Bali has every sport you’ll want to do on holiday – and even cricket at the Canggu Club. Now you’re heard it all!

Bali is My Life
Bali is full of royalty and like the European countries where respect runs high in the people, Bali’s royalty are revered and venerated. The comparison doesn’t stop there though, since European’s royalty are now restricted to largely ceremonial roles, so too in Bali the royalty sits very high on the ceremonial ladder, making them visible elements in the conservation and preservation of Bali’s culture. The mixture of culture, custom and religion is a thin blurred line for most foreigners so if you find yourself watching any ceremonyerr on the safe side and assume its a religious ceremony and be very respectful. Throughout Bali are royal palaces, some absolutely marvellous, others needing a little care and attention, all of them are precious jewels in Bali’s crown with their occupants giving the dazzle and glitter! There are royalty from various dynasties spread across Bali so if someone says they are royal you’d better beleive them!
Anak Agung Ayu Haley Dwara Wati Karangasem is a great granddaughter of the last king of Karangasem, the last ruler of a once very powerful kingdom and the largest in Bali. He died in 1946. She lives in Denpasar where she is studying to be a dentist and hopes to study her specialist subjects abroad. She is always very happy to return to the ancestoral palace in Amlapura Karangasem for weekends and on big ceremonial occiasions. Her Aunt Anak Agung Mirah Sasatrwati has played a big part in the well being of her large extended family, making sure the children are educated, and that they are all well versed in Balinese traditions and particularly in the family traditions of the Karengasem Puri. She has taught them respect for their heritage. So even though Haley now follows a more modern path, she can bridge the gap between ancient and modern between the traditional and the new. Her love for Bali and its special ways will stay with her forever.

Parks
Attractions
Bali is quickly becoming home to some very professional and well organized attractions which are worth a visit. Far from being out of character with Bali, these are mostly designed to fit in with Bali’s style and culture and of very high standard.
Balloon
Located in the BTDC complex of Nusa Dua, Bali Eye has an enormous, colourful balloon that’s anchored to the ground. This bird’s-eye adventure is worth trying because only 25 balloons like this exist in the world. The one in Bali has a diameter of 24m. As soon as you leave the ground, your focus will quickly shift from your fluttering stomach to the postcard view of Bali. Good news! You can walk freely in the gondola, so you can take in the view from any and every angle you wish: the curving, green peninsula surrounded by blue water; the western and southern coasts of Bali bordered by cliffs and stretches of golden sand; the vivid, lush forest of Uluwatu; and the hotels and houses in Nusa Dua and beyond that gives an added touch to the colours of nature.Even though you cannot see the full extent of the island, 12 minutes of floating in the air still offers a spectacular view of one gorgeous part of Bali.
Waterbom This modern water world of myriad slides and many other attractions is located on 3,5 hectares land in the heart of Kuta just in front of Kartika Plaza Hotel. Here you can pump your adrenalin to the maximum or just be a lazy sun bather. Enjoying Waterbom means a whole day full of excitement. Experience a phenomenal ride on the only Boomerang in South East Asia. Afterwards jump to the neighboring line and get spun in the Superbowl, the latest attraction in

the park (just like the dice in the roulette). Need more challenge? Hit the highest and fastest ride, 25 m up and a ground speed up to 70km/h, it is called Smashdown will get you down like a flash! Boogie Ride is also another quick ride, best ridden with a friend since it has two lines side-by side, and is also pretty thrilling. With less speed but a fast drop and quick turns and a bit of twist here and there, Macaroni Tube is as curly as noodles. Raft River is there not to be forgotten as its gentle flow will leave a great memory. After you have finished all the fast rides, take a break by enjoying a relaxing ride in the surrounding tropical scenery at Jungle Ride. For lazy sunbathers, the park provides spacious open areas to get kissed by the sun or relaxing under the shade of trees. Lazy River is also a good choice to relax and have a glimpse of sun and get showered by the many waterfalls and fountains. In the pleasure pool, you can swim or play volley ball, there’s a pool bar to provide some cool drinks. As if that wasn’t enough, spa centre offers a variety of treatments on their extensive menu. This theme park is a one stop shop of leisure. It is a water paradise on paradise island. It is a tranquil place to relax yet at the same time a great place to scream out loud. Watch out when you are on the slippery slopes to happiness, it’s downhill all the way….
Elephant Park Hidden away from the bounds of modern life, great creatures live in the vivid green jungle surrounding a humble traditional village: Gianyar Regency’s Taro village is home to 27 elephants who live well under the care of the Elephant Safari Park. The nearly two-hour drive to the elephant park begins in the civilized heart of the Balinese capital, Denpasar, and passes through quiet countryside to end in a narrow lane surrounded by a dense tropical forest. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. through 6 p.m., and early-bird visitors can have a most tiring yet exciting experience in elephant bathing: These great citizens of the world are ridden by their mahout to the main pond to enjoy its cool waters, then go on to the elephant-size open bathroom. The elephant tour seems to be the most popular activity, in which up to two visitors can climb into the saddle safely attached to an elephant’s back. Once you’re seated securely, your mahout will drive the grey giant along a track that runs about a kilometre through the middle of the dense forest for a tour past farms, through village streets, and back to the park.
Bali Adventure Rafting Another popular family attraction is white water rafting. On the Ayung River, Bali Adventure is the original company to set up here and still among the best. The river
boasts just enough spills and thrills to provide a ‘soft’ adventure. The guides with Bali Adventure are fantastic with children, reassuring them and giving everyone fair warning of what lies in wait. There are waterfalls and places to stop along the way for a swim. By the end of the ride, lunch and a shower is well appreciated. Kids are almost guaranteed to fall asleep on the way home.
Treetops Further afield Treetops is a premier attraction. Run by a French company, the course is designed with a variety of levels that will introduce the whole family to the joys of swinging through the trees. Beautifully situated in the Botanical gardens in the mountains of Bedugul, you can really let go here as safety is a priority and the equipment is world class. Combine this with a trip to the garden markets and, a suggestion for lunch, the Australian-run Crackers Sports bar in the village of Bedugul.
Taman Safari Park Lions and Tigers and Rhinos aren’t what you expect to find in Bali, but they are here and the newly opened Taman Safari Park gives their guests the opportunity to get up close to the wild animals in complete safety. There is also a water park and an amusement park complete with roller coaster for thrill seekers. Staying here is a real treat as well, an opportunity to wake up in the midst of the magnificent wild life is a thrill.

The Dancer 28
Bali is My Life
No artificial light is allowed. You sit in darkness in the clean, clear air of Ubud, the stars twinkle overhead, the grass is damp below your feet but you are very comfortable, ready to see something exciting. You’ve heard that tonight’s performers are fantastic, unusual, even astonishing, but you’ll wait to see for yourself. Suddenly a massive troupe of wild and crazy men rush on the field, it’s like an attack of guerillas or you’re lucky you’re sitting down. Then a wild-eyed, longhaired, wiry man leaps in to the midst of the semi- naked troupe. This is Nyoman Rina and the show has begun. Balinese dance in the main, is gentle and artistic, it’s flowing and colourful, the girls are beautiful, the men dramatic and stage macho. Rina is not stage macho, he’s the real thing. He’s wild and dynamic, he leaps, he jumps, he rushes, he commands and the troops okay. This is kecak like you’ve never seen it before. This is knock-your-socks-off culture, so real it hurts. The man at the centre of the storm is an artist who has chosen the darkness of Ubud as his canvas, the muscle and chanting of the male dancers as his paint, and his little and distorted body as the brush. He forms a pyramid of bodies, and climbs to the top, he stamps on bodies, he tumbles down. The fire is lit and embers are thrown everywhere, the men pick them up in their hands, they kick them, they throw them at each other. It’s dance with a difference. It’s dramatic and dangerous. It’s Bali and you have just had another life changing experience. The chanting stops. Meet the master dancer. He smiles.
Kecak Rina is a legend in Bali as an innovative dancer of huge energy. His own Kecak troupe which plays at ARMA, every full and dark moon is a highly original and charged performance, which differs from the Kecak dance created with the help of Walter Spies in the 1930’s. He is also dances many other traditional dances as well as creating new versions of older performances.

The Dances One of the absolute must – do experiences on any trip to Bali is the evening dance peformance. There are many very authentic dances performed in hotels and resorts with the dancers and musicians often coming in from one village by truck! But if you go out into the countryside (and lose the comfort of your hotel!) you get the genuine feeling of the performance. It really can be a moving and inspiring experience and is always a fantastic photo opportunity. Here are the main dances of Bali so you know what to chose.
Legong There are various forms of the Legong, but the Legong Kraton ‘Palace’ dance is the most often performed. It’s the most beautiful and graceful of Balinese dances, performed by girls as young as eight or nine years of age and rarely by those older than their early teens. Baris The warrior dance is traditionally a male counterpart to the feminine Legong with a group of energetic and warlike soldiers parading in line holding spears or brandishing other weapons such as a bow or Kris, depending on the variant performed. Wearing dramatic triangular hats they form a line that represents the soldiers who serve the kings of Bali and look very powerful in their movements. Kecak Probably the best known of the many Balinese dances, the Kecak (pronounced “keh-chack”) is unusual in that it does not have a gamelan music accompaniment. Instead the background is provided by a chanting ‘choir’ of men who verbalise the words “cha-a-chak-a-chak” in different ways to represent the chanting of monkeys. In each Kecak perfomance, sometimes over one hundred dancers play the monkey army, while the beutiful female dancers portray the main characters of Dewi, Sita and Trijata. Ramayana Ballet Basically, this dance tells the same story as the “Kecak” but without the monkey ensemble. However, a dramatic gamelan musical accompaniment steps in to enliven the performance which is full of interesting characters,

including kings, princes and princesses, different gods and even clowns. Kris Dance In the Barong dance the battle between the forces of good and evil, as represented by the Barong and Rangda is so intense that many of the Barong ‘s supporters, who are all played by men, go into a state of trance. They are armed with a ‘Keris’ (a traditional dagger) and as the witch insults the Barong and taunts the men they attack her. But her power is so strong that they are repulsed until the men are so distressed by their failure that they try to impale themselves on their Keris. What is amazing is that their trance state prevents them from receiving any injury. Topeng A mask dance where the dancers have to imitate the character represented by the masks they wear. These can be single or group performances of up to 40 performers and show great creativity in expression due to the variety of the characters like, kings, old men, animals, etc. Jauk is the solo version of this form of dance. Sanghyang (Fire Dance) The Sanghyang dance originally developed to drive out evil spirits from a village. There are different forms, but all involve putting dancers into a trance through the use of chanting, incense and prayers. Inhabited by either demonic or heavenly spirits, they dance like nymphs or animals, some may even walk through fire. A priest is always on hand to help the dancers out of their trance at the end of their dance.

Bali is My Life
There’s something absolutely enthralling about Balinese buildings and compounds: something magical and calming at the same time, something you can’t quite understand though. If you were the owner of a Balinese house however, you would certainly know what the secret is. It’s the ultimate in ergonomics, the peak of personalisation. You see every part of a house is built according to the size of the owner! The builder measures the span of the hand, the length of the fingers, the breath of the shoulders, the length of the foot, and according to stricly laid down laws, creates the house to the exact scale of the owner. The width of the doors, the size of the pillars, the length and breadth of the rooms, the distance between buildings, the height of doors is all predetermined, and gives the owner his perfect house. If we add on to that the pre-arranged relationships between all the buildings in a compound and the whole alignment with Mount Agung, you have a magical, unshakeable formula. And the results really work. Sadly most modern buildings are only based on the size of the budget and the tradition is not passed on, but to some thankfully tradition is sacrosanct.
Popo Danes is one of Bali’s most renowned architects. Born in Banuwatis in North Bali he studied in Udayana University in Denpasar and has never looked back. He has designed award winning resort hotels, villas, and other interesting creations. The ever youthful Popo has traveled to and enjoyed working? In many countries but will always return to Bali. He loves Bali because it is his home island. He loves its position and the acess to international thought and influences while retaining its true Balinese identity. “So many things connect in Bali and the mix of modern and traditional suits his profession. “We can live as we are in Bali, we can be ourselves. In Jakarta you have to be someone else.”

Galleries
Museums
Bali is rightly known as the centre of Asia Pacific art and culture, so taking some time to wander through the galleries and museums is inspiring and an education. Here are a few to what your artistic appetite.
Museum Pasifika – Asia Pacific Ocean of Art
Art was part of life for ancient people in Asia Pacific region. Mask and sculpture were used in religious ceremony and textiles were made not only to cover body but also for magical purposes. Even now traditional art in some part of the region is continuously integrated to people’s daily life. Indonesia is one of the countries in Asia Pacific which is rich in art where art’s forms in Indonesia are mostly integrated with tradition and it’s aspects. There are so many places for art lovers to study and to appreciate arts but Museum Pasifika is one distinguished place you cannot miss. The museum is located inside BTDC, a colony of five stars hotel, in Nusa Dua. It takes only 45 minutes drive from Sunset Road towards the International Airport. BTDC is in the end of the By Pass Ngurah Rai.
Beside collections of painting, Museum Pasifika, which was established in August 2006, also owns a collection of premier art of Vanuatu, a collection of tapa, bark cloth, of Oceania, and textiles of Indonesia Archipelago. The museum lets you travel from one to another atmosphere that the artist’s imaginations had captured and visualized it on canvas. Besides exquisite landscape and everyday life, women also were the inspiration for several artists.
ARMA- More than A Museum
Tucked in the vibrant area of Ubud, Agung Rai Museum offers a tranquil atmosphere to appreciate the visual arts. Moreover, this is the place where one can integrate with the source of the inspiration itself.
The museum has 11 spacious rooms with different themes. The works of Indonesian artists, such as Dullah, Ida Bagus Nyoman Rai, Nyoman Gunarsa, Made Wianta, Regig, and others, that show how the colonialisation era had effected the acceleration process of art in Indonesia, can be studied and appreciated in the first room.
Agung Rai Museum of Art was officially opened on 9 June 1996; however the Arma complex was began in 1989. The museum boasts not only a collection of paintings from legendary Balinese artists but also works of prominent Indonesian artists from the Indonesian Archipelago such as Jeihan Sukmantoro, Affandi, Srihadi Soedarsono and others as well as foreign artists who drew inspiration from natural beauty of landscape and culture in Bali. Those are Walter Spies, Theo Meier, Le Mayeur, Rudolf Bonnet and others.
Pasifika does have plenty admirable collections of visual art. A collection of paintings by Indochina artists is displayed in the seventh room. Works of Covarrubias seen on the wall of the museum in the room number 12. Before that you can see Tahiti on canvas as well as Asia as a whole and the fascinating beauty of China in the room number 10 and 11.
There are two spacious buildings made from red bricks, lime stone and black stone, as the symbols of the natural colors, set among the grand garden completed with ponds and fountains. The first building, called Bale Daja, is where one can study and appreciate traditional paintings from Balinese artists. Here you can go through a journey of accelerating development of Balinese painting. The

collection starts from 1940’s Batuan style paintings by anonymous. Batuan style painting is reflection of all daily activities, put into canvas in such an immense detail. Crossing a well maintained green garden full of local plantation is Bale Dauh, the second building in the complex. It is the show case for modern paintings of several prominent artists from inside and outside Indonesia. Put on the display, a unique famous painting by Raden Saleh called ‘Regent of Magelang and His wife’. Further more, the works of Walter Spies which boast lighting and gradation techniques can be found in the Bale Dauh. Agung Rai, the founder, started collecting paintings from all over the world in the 1980’s. For him the Arma complex is a dream come true. His vision is to establish a space to conserve the arts and the source of the inspiration. The creation of ARMA is the manifestation of his vision. On 7 hectares land he built an art space that integrates nature and Balinese traditional daily life.
Museum Rudana
Established in 1995, Museum Rudana is located in the tranquil atmosphere of Ubud. The museum boasts an outstanding collection of Balinese and Indonesian
classical, traditional, and contemporary paintings. The collection is from Indonesian prominent artists; new talented Indonesian artists; and also prominent expatriates who made Bali as their source of creativity. The three-story museum building was designed according to the Balinese philosophy of Tri Angga (foot, body, and head) and Tri Mandala (inner court, middle court, and outer court). The main entrance takes you to the second floor where a collection of contemporary paintings by Indonesian famous artists such as Made Wianta, Nyoman Gunarsa, and Sri Hadi Sudarsono are exhibited. The museum is really a place for art lovers, collectors, and art critics either to appreciate the invaluable art as well as to enhance their understanding of art as the museum host a collection of 400 paintings including the works of legendary artists such as Affandi, Basuki Abdulah, Antonio Blanco, and others. The paintings are selected and collected by Nyoman Rudana and Ni Wayan Olasthini, who have dedicated a remarkable effort in promoting Indonesian art. The museum has successfully realized the vision of the owner, Nyoman Rudana, to promote the richness of Indonesian art to the local, national, and international as well as to provide cultural education institution for public.

Amanusa rests on a hilltop near to Bali’s southern most point, on the bukit, or peninsula. Geologically, the area is different to the rest of Bali, rather than lush rice fields or limestone cliffs, the vegetation is dominated by coconut trees, a band of green below a blue horizon that leads on to the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. This is the vista from Amanusa. Amanusa, “peaceful isle,” is located on Bali’s southern peninsula on a grassy knoll overlooking Nusa Dua, the Indian Ocean and the Bali Golf and Country Club. The resort commands spectacular views of the island of Nusa Penida and the distant volcano of Gunung Agung.
