DARKROOM An analog solution for the digital world. Team Milk presents Darkroom, a disposable camera app. It allows groups to reconnect through photos that have been taken and stored within a shared film roll for a designated length of time. The app targets SCAD students embarking on their college years. Students are able to reconnect with friends whom they may have lost contact with, celebrate close friendships, and relive pivotal moments throughout their college experience. The underlying purpose of Darkroom is to restore the value of photographs. Because of the instantaneous quality of camera applications, photographs are too often taken for granted. Darkroom creates a nostalgic, analog experience around photographs by masking them from immediate view. It encourages users to reminisce and reconnect through shared experiences from the past.

CAPTURE

Once users have captured 24 photos on their roll, or feel that they are finished with it, they may go to the Roll Settings and select the period of time they wish for it to develop. Spans other than a year are limited in quantity. The user will then tag the three friends they want to ultimately share the roll with.

From the Rolls screen, users can view the rolls that have finished developing (indicated in white), or view the progress of their currently developing rolls (pixelated and in grey). From there, they can “see the photos being developed by Dirk, who runs the titular Darkroom.

When a roll has finished developing, everyone tagged gets a notification. If anyone likes a photo in a roll, they can tap the scissors icon to claim it and save it to their phone. Doing this makes it unavailable to others, instead making it possible to connect with the person who claimed the photo. This is how Darkroom reconnects old friends and acquaintances through memories.

Proxima Nova was the best choice for a clean, pragmatic design and legible copy. The palette was chosen to both reflect the darkroom namesake and yield to the photographic content.

ICONOGRAPHY EDIT

The icons were created to lend the app a sense of animation and playfulness, while maintaining well-known visual metaphors.

ARGO A travel assistant for the 21st century. The assignment? To create an app that solved a real-world problem in an innovative and creative way. Many problems were found, and many solutions sought, but only one emerged supreme. Enter Argo. Sleek, highly contextual, and unabashedly social, Argo is a vision of the ideal travel app. It guides you all the way from booking to arrival, and if your travel plans change, Argo will change with them. Flight delayed? No problem: Argo will show you what’s going on where you are. It’ll even let you grab a cab and get there. Whether you’re a casual traveler or a business professional constantly on the move, Argo is the only virtual travel companion you’ll ever need.

Browse popular flights, or deals on your top destinations. If you already have your heart set on where you’re going, plan your own trip with the airline of your choice. With Argo, you’ll never need to jump between apps again.

Access flight information, weather, baggage status, and more. If your flight’s delayed or canceled, Argo is there to help you find and check into your hotel. Argo will even give you recommendations on events and entertainment, wherever you are.

PRIORI Heaven in the Emerald City. Priori is a vivacious concept for a set of condos inside of a converted church, located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. The concept revolves around the phrase “A Priori,” playing with the idea of predestination. As a result, each section is a different “A” pun. One of the best representations of this vision was the blackletter “P” of the logo – instead of going the easy, boring route of making it Gothic, it was filled to the brim with the stained glass motif that punctuates the entire project.

FRENCH PAPER Pop Tone Bar Crawl French Paper, a paper company (shocking, I know) based in Michigan, is renowned for their innovative designs in sample/swatch books. The goal of this project was to take that idea and go a little crazy with it. The solution that was ultimately reached was the Pop Tone Bar Crawl - taking the idea of getting drunk on color to its logical and very tipsy conclusion. Each color was represented as a bar, and going through the swatch book represented moving to the next bar on the crawl, ultimately resulting in total blackout.

POST HERBALISM The spice must flow. PostHerbalism – aside from being an incredibly excellent pun – was a concept for a mail subscription service that makes cooking great-tasting meals incredibly easy and – who knows – maybe even fun. The central product, dubbed the Spice Bomb, was essentially a blend of spices packed together into an adorable soap-bar-sized tablet that was meant to be broken apart and added to any meal (although using the included recipe was highly recommended). Other products include individual, fresh spices, as well as a premium subscription, which would include monthly gifts such as cookware and utensils. Of course, all of these vary from month to month - to spice things up.

MYSCAD A SCAD-themed design challenge. MySCAD was a self-motivated 24 hour design challenge from 2014. After changes in visual trends required a UI refresh, a further 24 hours were taken in 2015 to wrangle the app once again. The goal was to create an app that would be far more useful than the current MySCAD app, but that would still be on-brand and pitchable for SCAD. The features introduced here are not only technically feasible but would be easily implemented and represent a holistic approach to an app for a major educational institution.

Login screen displays artwork from SCAD Permanent Collection. Sign in is completed using SCAD NetID.

Home screen is an aggregate of personal and school email, along with messages from SCAD.

Hamburger icon opens a main menu, providing access to the most important features.

Course view is divided into cards, with icons denoting chat, roster, and map functions. Absences and class times are also displayed.

Chat function allows students in the same class to communicate on a single platform.

Transloc’s Rider app is used for SCAD’s bus system. In the MySCAD app, this would be licensed and the functionality embedded for a one-stop SCAD experience.

MOSAICS An exploration in geometry & expression. While initially created for a typographic calendar, these prints ultimately seemed best suited to stand alone. Like any visual project – be it digital or otherwise – they are intended to evoke certain moods and emotions, particularly those associated with their namesake months. For example, “March” is quiet, bordering on isolating, whilst “May” has all of the floral and aquatic splendor of a day by the beach.

PRISM A multidisciplinary, multisensory music experience. The product of a collaboration with Camille Sakoda-Chang and Marc Sylvester, this bluetooth speaker began life as an iPod dock built for a color theory class. When music is played through it, the internal lights respond by flashing, changing color, and creating patterns from the grid they’re placed in. This version differs greatly from the original, both in design and use of materials (though the circular design and diameter were maintained) – and, because it’s purely theoretical still, we added what might seem to some people like an unreasonable amount of LEDs. To that, we say “no such thing.”

TWITTER ANNUAL REPORT Print in the digital age. As one of the most ubiquitous social networking platforms in the world, Twitter lives almost entirely in the digital realm. However, at time of writing, Twitter’s annual report has yet to make the leap from print PDF to fully interactive digital experience. As such, the purpose of this project was to explore not only a more expressive version of Twitter’s annual report in print form, but to then adapt it to digital. While the two share many similarities, there are just as many differences – some subtle (buttons on digital), some not so subtle (the tactility of paper versus the glass of an iPad). The dichotomy between these two experiences then becomes just as interesting as their cohesion.

SPOTIFY APPLE WATCH A 24-hour design challenge. Spotify + Apple Watch was the result of a 24-hour, self-assigned design challenge. The prompt was deceptively simple: take a well-known service and condense it into its purest form for the Apple Watch. The solution removed all extraneous features while placing a focus on what matters most – for example, persistent volume control across the app. Not bad for 24 hours, huh?

Spotify for Apple Watch simplifies the Spotify experience, making it easier than ever to access the features that matter most. Search for millions of songs, or access your favorite albums, playlists, and Radio Stations. Use remote to see what’s playing now, and change it on any device it’s playing on.

Your Music has been pared down to its most important parts. A beautiful depth effect makes each category legible and distinguishable. Drag to scroll, or tap for more immediacy. Volume control is persistent, making it easy to adjust whenever you need to turn up – or turn down.

Radio provides access to the stations you’ve already created, in chronological order from the last time you listened.

Playlists are color-coded for clarity and further customization.
