Palimpsest

Palimpsest is a manuscript or piece of writing material on which later writing has been superimposed in earlier writing.

The brief of the project was to design accommodation and performance spaces for a set of 6 internationally recognised authors for the Liverpool Arts Biennial. The accommodation and performance spaces would be situated in Liverpool’s Festival Gardens, Otters-pool. A library featuring performance spaces and a wunderkrammer with a variety of objects linked to the authors will be included . The authors chosen will write prose over the course of a year. There will be an annual change of authors living in those spaces . Both sets of authors will perform at the end of the 2 years .

The main objective of the scheme was to demonstrate the notion of palimpsest ,through texture of materials and atmosphere of spaces. This will allow users to be inspired and comforted by those spaces .The spaces would feature nature daylight to illuminate those spaces. Solar shading and double skin facades would be used to prevent solar glare. Cross and mechanical ventilation through the building would allow the spaces to breathe. Interior finishes including laminate wood and hempcrete would give the building a sense of warmth and craftsmanship.

Creation from Crisis

Accra, Ghana

In an urgent response to overpopulation , the project acts as a study of material and human resources . Through the examination of local building practices in Ghana , a material palette for a montesorri pavilion was formed. This included a family of polycarbonate roofing , recycled materials and minimal amounts of concrete and steelwork .

The process of developing the building included researching the work of Cedric Price and Francis Kere.

The main structure is made of CLT (cross laminate timber) and a space frame roof with concrete pad foundations. The simple rectangular floor plan accommodate up to 40 students . Additionally, there is a small library and playspace. Composting toilet structures will be built on the site.

Flow Investigations: Oil from the North Sea

The investigations focused on the system of extraction & transportation of oil from the Brent oil platforms in the North Sea to the rest of the U.K.

The proposal examines how these oil platforms could be converted into cold water wildlife observation platforms at the end of their service life.

The unique mobile location , with the diversity of programs including accommodation and laboratories for scientists provides an opportunity to turn the platforms into a destination for deep sea divers ,scientists and informed members of the general public to further to this part of the world in a less damaging and environmentally friendly way.
