Biography As a native to central Pennsylvania I have grown to love the rich architecture of small towns and rural communities filled with deep history and natural beauty. Growing up in that environment instilled me with a passion to react to my world. As the son of a colonial cabinet maker I relish the creative process and high craftsmanship that comes with it. As part of my upbringing I have developed a deep love for history and historic architecture. Since boyhood I have worked in my father’s cabinet shop and helped to slowly renovate our 1890’s Pennsylvanian farmhouse into a 1790’s colonial. Moving to Chicago in the early stages of my academic career I developed a new appreciation for both design and urban culture. The ideals I have learned from both my time as an “urbanite” and a rural citizen drive me to pursue an integrity of design centered around community, family, and faith. An avid outdoorsman I love to recreate, specifically kayaking, hiking, camping, and hunting are all things that I enjoy doing with my friends and family. Other activities such as travel, music, and theater also engage me. I enjoy high culture and the arts whether it be oil on canvas or theater on stage. I have had the privilege to travel extensively in both North America and Europe. A choir tour to Ireland as a college freshman and later the Czech Republic as a study abroad student opened my eyes to cultures and ideas outside of my experience. All my travels have taught me more about the world and people than any other exercise. Every time I return home I emerged both enlightened and impassioned for my homeland the United States. Above all my faith in Christ has been the centerpiece of my life. Church going is not a social event for me, but rather an integral part of who I am as a Christian. My faith has taught me to be accepting of all peoples as an answer to the call to love thy neighbor as thyself.

The Center For Civil Liberties Charlottesville, VA

Project Narrative In August 2017, the death of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, VA, brought great attention to a series of protests surrounding the removal of public Civil War monuments. The situation revealed many racial and cultural segregations that have proliferated Charlottesville for decades. In a nation where we believe all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator certain unalienable rights, the very thought of some factions oppressing and even removing the rights of others is appalling. However, even more disturbing is the inability for all engaged parties to settle these tensions peaceably, with mutual respect for life and fellow man. Upon a class visit to Charlottesville, in September 2017, our studio was made aware of the greater context that lead up to those August events. Racial and economic segregation have been the consequence of a power struggle in that city for many decades. As a result the minorities both, racial and economic, have been repressed so as their voice is truly no longer heard. This repression has resulted in a volatile discord among differing communities in the city. Our resolve as designers was plain, to propose a space where people could hold no claim other than their rights as citizens to discuss and come to terms with all opposing parties. We needed to provide a safe haven for free speech. 8

The site was an abandoned parking lot across the street from the Albemarle County Courthouse. Two existing structures were also incorporated into the program. The old city hall, once restored, will serve as reception, museum, and class rooms, and a small residential house, which will house the executive offices for the center. Proposed are two new municipal office buildings, a speaking hall, titled an Oratorium, and finally a statuary pavilion where monuments to principles will be displayed.

Exterior Style The exterior of the buildings drew from several Virginian precedents. Aside from the use of load bearing masonry walls, the implementation of arcades, divided windows, classical balustrades, and hipped roofs can all be found throughout Virginia’s civic buildings. Looking to Neo-Paladian precedents this aesthetic pays homage to the classical vernacular present through Virginia.

West Rockford Community Development Center Rockford, IL

Project Description

Avon St.

Central Ave.

Johnston Ave.

The West Rockford Community Development Center is a facility designed to challenge the stigma associated with a conventional library or community center.

Pierpont Ave.

As part of a community outreach studio we worked with community stimulus groups in the city of Rockford, IL. Our project consisted of an urban development proposal and individual building proposals

The center seeks to serve the local State St. population by putting learning to action. This facility will house library spaces, economic development center, child care facilities, low cost rent-able retail, and office spaces. The intention is that this facility will educate and encourage small business growth in the community, serving as both a symbol and a means of new change in this community. 16

Precedent: West State Street Master Plan

State St.

The first portion of the project was to develop an urban master plan for West Rockford primarily along the West State Street corridor. The plan which we proposed KEY to the city of Rockford focuses on establishing nodes and landmarks along what is N Path Edge Node District Landmark a largely abandoned major corridor. Our study lead us to strategically place Major Element landmarks at distinct locations such as the intersection of Johnston Ave. and State Minor Element Street where the Development Center is proposed. Our objective was to increase habitability in this section of the city where points of interests are beyond reasonable pedestrian access. By encouraging development at the four locations shown, businesses and public institutions would be easily accessed by the largely pedestrian population. The Diagrams below demonstrate the rational behind this location and concept.

Artisan Tower A Vision For Elgin, IL

This vision for Elgin is to look towards the future through a creative lens of the past. Using local motifs to inspire the aesthetic design this building 24

seeks to combine traditional languages with advancements in technology.

luthier works, glass blowing, and ceramics could all comfortably reside in this facility.

Programmaticly, the tower features residential, office, and artisan studio spaces. These spaces are dedicated to the craft community who seek to make functional pieces of art that are not only beautiful but also useful. Crafts such as furniture building,

By placing these artisan spaces on the building’s extremities they receive window frontage exposing the artisans to the greater world. The hope is that these spaces will engage the local culture in craft, community, and commerce.

Castellum West Loop, Chicago, IL Re-envisioning The Merit School of Music

The Merit School Music offers an after-school K-12 music training program for the children of Chicago. The scope of this project was to propose a redesign of Merit’s existing facility, encompassing their existing lot and an adjacent site. Located on the corner of Monroe and Peoria Streets this neighborhood comprised of mostly residential condominiums featured a well used park across the street, as well as some local shops. Desiring to inspire a sense of culture and community my proposal for a new concert hall visible from the exterior, ample class and practice rooms, and an outdoor performance space all became integral to the design. Seeking to resemble the attributes of a Castellum or village I hoped to address the schools dual nature of public performance and private learning. The result was a 95,000 sqft. performance and educational facility designed to serve both Merit and its context.

East Elevation 28

South Elevation 29

Seeking to emphasize the village concept the program is designed around a central community space or lobby. One entrance from the south, facing the park, opens to a court yard featuring a sunken amphitheater. Another opens on the street to the east as did the existing school entrance. Thus, providing both public and private entrances.

This project gave much consideration to the acoustic qualities and design of the performance spaces. The specific scheme of the main concert hall was to modify the traditional shoebox style as an experiment in both sound and aesthetics. Most notable are the slips which serve as the entrance and the steeply racked right side which goes from the floor to the balcony as a singular unit like a Greek amphitheater.

Bubny Center For Constructed Art Prague, Czech Republic

This project re-purposed the front portion of a mid 19th century train depot located in Bunby, a district of Prague. During my time as a study abroad student in Prague, this proposal of school and gallery is dedicated to built pieces of art, such as furniture and sculpture. The concept was to demonstrate how old transitions to new through subtle influences and changes. Bisecting the space with a curving glass wall in the same profile of the original facade creates a parody to the existing facade demonstrating how the old changes into something similar, but different.

Urban Farm and Market Elgin, IL

The creation of an urban farm and market in Elgin, IL, was intended to help revitalize the declining downtown area. The market features a large market hall of over 6,000 sqft., other smaller retail space, and an educational wing where locals are taught the benefits of locally grown fresh food. The farm includes a series of green houses and livestock barns. The inspiration for the design came from the local industrial and agricultural buildings that make up the fabric of Elgin and its surrounding area.

World Vision Shelter Design Competition

During this project our studio devoted an entire semester to meeting the needs of wartorn Syrian refugees. Attempting to provide them with temporary housing conditions, these transitional shelters were then constructed at full scale and tested against other shelter designs at the World Vision Competition held at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. During the competition our shelter underwent, seismic, thermal, and wind load tests, as well as a timed build, and inhabitability test where volunteers spent the night in our shelter. Our goal was to bring people above their circumstances, consequently an occupiable roof became mandatory for our design. Using light gauge steel studs, aluminum composite panels, corrugated plastic, and camping tarps we completing our design capable of holding several adults.

Study Abroad Prague, Czech Republic There are few defining moments that really change someone’s life, but my four months in Prague had a tremendous impact on my life and perspective. During the spring of my junior year at Judson, I and four of my classmates embarked on an adventure in Central Europe, a place that only twenty years prior was sealed off from our culture. Living in a city that dated beyond a thousand years, there was much architecturally to drink in. Everything from the world’s largest castle complex to Frank Ghery’s Dancing House. The range of buildings left little to be desired for inspiration and excitement. However, I learned much of the value of culture, and though I loved the Czech culture, my time there instilled in me a deeper appreciation for my home here in the States.

Since boyhood I have been a part of my father’s colonial furniture business. As I have grown, my duties have gone from sweeping floors to building and finishing custom pieces of furniture. In the fall of 2016, I created a website showcasing my father’s work. Above is the cover menu from that website. You can see more of my father’s work by visiting dsmcabinetmaker.com. Working with my dad has taught me many things like how to hand cut dovetails or how to make a raised panel door with a mortised and tenoned frame. But mostly I’ve learned how to work with excellence and an eye for detail.

Strosser Architecture and Conservation Danville, PA My time as an intern with Ted Strosser has been a fantastic experience. I began part-time the summer of 2014, and have continued to work for him ever since receiving a full time position in May 2016. The work I have done has been varied to say the least. I have had opportunity to work on virtually every kind of building project such as residential, industrial, commercial, municipal, higher education, healthcare, assisted living, and restaurant design.

The Team

My duties have also been broad, often taking projects from design development right through to construction documents and construction administration. My favorite tasks are documenting existing buildings. Eighty percent of the work I did at SAC is either renovations or additions to existing structures. As a standard service we will often model in Revit the existing conditions of each project, this is one of my favorite challenges and is something in which I have become skilled. The subsequent pages are of both design and technical work from a variety of projects.
