My name is William Davis You can call me Will For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in design and all areas involving a creative process. This is undoubtedly the reason why I have fallen in love with Design, Photography, and Videography. The ability to work well within a group, particularly with fellow designers, is an invaluable skill to possess. Luckily, it is one which I enjoy. My confidence and ability in group work has been substantially boosted through my involvement in the Rio Tinto project. Take four masters students from the other side of the globe and one undergraduate from UTS, a complex design brief and only 4 weeks to complete the project; many would see this as a recipe for disaster. Rather, it was an opportunity for me to not only hone my design skills but also my ability to work well within a group. I recognised my personal strengths, such as photography, sketching and videography and used them to the benefit of the group and project. I also felt that I was able to help focus group discussion when there seemed to be a lack of direction. My approach to design very much focuses on lateral thinking. When presented with a design brief, my first instincts are to strip back the issue surrounding the design and what is being asked of me. This allows me to approach design with a sense of clarity and develop clear ideas of where my designs are heading. My time working in the field of design has given me the opportunity to develop a unique style which clearly shows in my work to date. My aesthetic style is dictated by my need to draw attention to key features in designs, all the while paying attention to the smaller details and adding in a touch of elegance and crispness along the way. I design with the intention to communicate complex ideas and functions in a simple, understated manner while still managing to convey a thoughtfulness at each designs core.

Pancake Shake Pen Cormack Innovation Awards Competition Finalist 2012 Pancake mix packaging designed to target children

The Brief: The competition design brief focused around the innovation of packaging focusing on a childs interest and using a child as a focus for the packaging. The product must be innovative and could fit will into the existing market. My Approach: I My attention turned to the memorable and ritualistic Sunday breakfast, which cantered upon pancakes. This encouraged me to look back at my childhood and asses how it could be come a more child oriented and exciting product. Most of the existing packaging followed a very utilitarian and simple approach, and I wanted to develop a more ergonomic and iconic form to pierce the current market. Final Concept: The final concept draws upon the idea of creating shapes out of the pancakes to entertain young children. The small nozzle allows a parent to create more complex pancake shapes. The double nozzle shape provides the ability to change between standard circular pancakes and intricate pancake shapes. Reflection: I feel the lid form and mechanism works well, however some refining of the hinge design could lead to a more streamlined shape.

The Brief: To design a product with the purpose of making football more accessible to a wider user group. This could encompass specific disabilites or the general public. Our Approach: Our group contained 5 people; 4 masters students and myself. We focused on blind football as a sport due to it’s novel appeal but also based on our interest of neuroplasticity within the blind and the ability to read braille. We wanted to try and provide a solution which could develop with the increasing of haptic feedback awareness through neuroplasticity. The approach was mostly experimental due to the small time constraint of 4 weeks. Final Concept: Basic navigation tools for the visually impaired such as the white cane have not changed significantly for over a century. Whilst being inexpensive and intuitive, they have been largely untouched by advances in science, design and engineering, and are particularly unwieldy for sports. Prescient aims to revolutionize this by equipping the visually imparted with a new ‘sixth’ sense of navigation.

Employing advances in neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to ‘rewire’ itself in response to changes in behaviour, or environment – Prescient offers real-time sense of physical space through tactile feedback. Macphersons + UTS A modular knife storage system with an iconic knife design

The Brief: To design a set of knives and corresponding knife block while being conscious of consumer needs within the homeware market. My Approach: I was initially led by the simple need of having a secure form of knife transport for young chef apprentices on public transport although the very small niche made me reconsider a broader need of safe knife transport and storage. While speaking to the staff of Macpherson’s, they were interested in developing an iconic image for the Wiltshire brand. Final Concept: The final concept follows the idea of a knife and knife sheath being sold as a singular unit. The knife sheath would serve as a cover which could be placed into a draw, or alternatively the user could buy a corresponding knife block to store both the sheath and knife.

Need Identification: Cluttered Draws and Counters, Varied Grips and Hygiene

The final knife handle design provides Wiltshire with an iconic image that can be identified by it’s geometric shape. Reflection: The form of the handle could be refined to be more ergonomic while the knife sheath locking mechanisms could be refined to provide a more secure fit.

GG Wheel

Kings Cross Sharps Unit + UTS A sharps retrieval system to reduce back strain and needle stick injuries

The Brief: To analyse and design a product and/or process to help sharps retrieval teams in being more efficient and safe. My Approach: The process to contain sharps waste on the street is disjointed while also being a consistent strain on the retrievers back. The retriever must place the sharps bin on the ground next to the waste, stand back up and use tongs to handle the waste into the bin. I wanted to provide a more streamlined approach that reduces the amount of bending needed. Final Concept: The GG Wheel provides the retrievers with a simple, safe solution by keeping the sharps bin low to the ground and away from the body while still having total control of it’s position. All the retriever must do is roll the GG Wheel next to the sharps waste, using the tongs to place the waste into the bin and then continue moving. The sharps bin is easily removed and replaced once it has been filled while also allowing the handle to be swapped for varied dexterities. Reflection: I think a more refined design for changing the direction of the handle would provide a more complete design solution.

UTS A 3D Chess Model Concept

The Brief: To design and model a full chess set. My Approach: I enjoy intricate small figurines as well as chess sets with two opposing sets of characters with different aesthetics outside of the traditional black and white juxtaposition. I envisaged what could personify the idea of a white angelic team and a black evil team clashing in a miniature world. Final Concept: The final aesthetic focused on flowing lines like a ribbon in the wind. The opposing teams reflected the concept of being on a battlefield with juxtaposing phsycial aesthetics while using the ribbon and soft surfaces as a cohesive feature Reflection: I belive the two sides provide adequate stylistics qualities for a virtual chess set, however refinement of each piece would be needed to produce a phsyical product.

YOUR Vodka UTS A 3D Modelled Vodka Bottle

The Brief: To design and create a life like render of a bottle of your choosing My Approach: Vodka is often packaged in incredibly glamorous bottles and I wanted to try execute a design with similar aesthetic language as existing bottles. The bottle was to be unique with elegant qualities that could fit into the current market Final Concept: YOUR Vodka has two openings; one for pouring and the other for air flow to produce a continuous flow of liquid. The corks provide an affluent aesthetic while the blue hue creates a calming sensation.
