Typological Urbanism: Bali as a Disaggregated City
FOREWORD.
My project started with a curiosity of the island city of Denpasar (Bali). I have been there more than five times. It has a mix of domestic cultural liveliness with its expanding western influences arriving over the past 10 years until now. As a local Indonesian from Jakarta, I have observed these conditions quite similar in major Indonesian cities, regardless if its a financial center like Jakarta or a touristy center like Bali. All Indonesian cities have become decentralized systems as an urban entity, where the government relies solely on government spending for infrastructure without seeing the big picture.
Bali is a dissagergated city, where touristy districts are separated with local districts. The rich and local culture of Kuta & Seminyak and the emerging Canggu district has become lost as touristy buildings and precincts are expanding and developing after the 2010s. Where, surprisingly Jimbaran and Nusa Dua are other touristy districts, but some of their sub-regions are underrepresented due to its low and medium class living with small offices and cheap accommodation. It was an interesting discovery despite its disorganization. Bali has some emergence in its typological adjacencies, where vernacular buildings include programs between public and private, a place to work and a place to live with a place for the community.
This piece of book serves as an observational study of Bali’s urban system. Looking the microorganisms and the macro-systems on what makes this city quite intriguing. Therefore, I have a interest in the urban system ; specifically between diverse range of building typologies and its relationship with the urban fabric of cities, which makes me interested in how these building typologies discovered relate well with the urban situation of the city.

Staying at the Alron Hotel in Kuta, I have walked around Kuta & Seminyak, It is surrounded with tourists activity due to the close proximity between hotel, resorts and bustling shopping centers. Architecturally, vernacular construction was commonly used with the use of bricks, traditional roofings . Only fewer locals have left these districts as most of the existing ‘kampung’ (village) land was developed in exchange touristy building typologies. Some remained in these districts and started small retail and entertainment businesses that help contribute to the economic profit of the tourism sector in Bali.

Seminyak Village & Seminyak Square - Seminyak.
Canggu is a developing distirct filled with international expats who mostly set up expanding touristy businesses, the development resulted in the city expanding rapidly in the upper regions. Overall Canggu has become a tourist and expat hotspot for a place to live and work for international businesses and workers.
Whereas Mengwi is still common in its locality, where it has vernacular temples, small offices, markets and affordable schools and housing complexes with agricultural rice farming adjacent to these settlements.
To sum up, I believe that these two regions are vastly different as Canggu is losing its locality similarly in terms of urban conditions in exchange for its international touristy economies, presuming that Mengwi is set to become the next threat of development.

Most tourists and local only notice the popular desitnations in Jimbaran & Nusa Dua, where hotels, night clubs are popular for international tourists. However, there are quite plenty of locals who are located in a sub-region or unpopular roads, where they work and live. These locals are deemed as a local low-class familes.
Jimbaran’s indigenous urban fabric is mostly filled with buildings that involved industrial manufacturing sectors as well as small businesses and administrative headquaters. Whereas the Nusa Dua region is filled with low-cost school and local institutions that teaches local students.
