A How-To Guide for Men's Fashion Accessorizing Accessorizing is one of those things most men would rather not discuss, much less do. If only they knew how easy it is to change their look or add an irresistible appeal that sets them apart with just a piece of cool men’s jewelry, a pocket square, soft neck scarf, or tie clasp. Here are some ways to effortlessly incorporate one or two well-chosen pieces of exclusive men’s jewelry and other accessories that make you a stand-out in any setting. Think of these as guidelines rather than hard and fast rules, so you can relax and have fun as you get comfortable with your accessorized self. Okay, there is one actual rule—be yourself. No one is asking you to start carrying a man purse or pierce your ear, unless that is who you are, in which case, rock on! Well, there is a second rule, too, and that is—less is more. You’ve probably seen guys who go all or nothing, and in an effort to show a little bling, layer on their entire jewelry collection with a stack of chains, a row of bracelets, multiple rings, and—why not?—a watch fob. Don’t be that guy—unless, of course, you are a rock star, in which case, see the previous rule. How you accessorize depends largely on the occasion, which tells you what your fashion boundaries are, from formal office attire, to casual workplace or hipster on the go. Formal Office If your working environment dictates an expensive, tailored suit, you have clear boundaries that make life simpler. Still, there are plenty of ways to accessorize your look. Start by varying your choice of fabric and shirt color (depending on your corporate culture). Darker shirt colors, like charcoal or black, convey a sophisticated, powerful, contemporary look. Choose a slender silk tie, and either coordinate with a contrasting dark color, or, if your shirt is a light color, accent with a brightly colored tie. Take advantage of that beautiful shirt as a backdrop for some high-end cuff links, the easiest piece of men’s jewelry to incorporate. Make sure your cuffs hit about one-quarter inch to onehalf inch below the edge of your jacket sleeve, and you’ll have just enough room to show off a stunning pair of gold-plated cuff links set with bright blue lapis lazuli.1 Casual Workplace Let’s say you go to work in your favorite jeans every day, or perhaps you rock a little hipster with bright colored denims or wingtips sans socks. Go for layered accessories, with a coordinating colored neck scarf. Rein in the color palette for your shirt, sweater, or jacket, keeping to neutral tones.

If there are too many bright colors in your outfit, you lose control of the total look and nothing stands out. Build on your controlled but casual image with distinctive men’s designer jewelry or a skinny belt. Tuck in a fitted shirt and show off a quality leather belt. Aim for a “matched metal”2 look by coordinating a brass belt buckle with a gold-plated watch, or a silver belt buckle with your bracelet of sculpted sterling silver.3 Keeping to one color of metal accent pulls your whole look together in a subtle way. Day to Evening If you go from either type of workplace to a night out, a few quick change-ups will have you ready to forget all about the day’s stress and just party. The formal look can be dressed down in under five minutes. Remove the tie, open two top buttons (don’t get carried away; this is no time to go for a plunging neckline), and roll up your sleeves to mid-forearm. Remember to tuck those cuff links safely away in your briefcase or pocket. Now you can show off your slender, sterling silver bracelet inlaid with 10,000 year-old Woolly Mammoth tooth. If you’re a fan of 50s cool, you just have to hook your suit jacket onto one finger and throw it over your shoulder—what an entrance! Hipster looks are ready-to-wear day or night, but, for a different mood, try toning down the color mix to layered neutrals, and throw on a retro visor cap with some shades.
