FROM EDITOR

photo by rachael horst. I’m very excited you decided to pick up this special edition of Sank Magazine. Working with young actresses and models is one of my favorite things to do, so this issue was a lot of fun. First we got together with Industrial Design major, Darby Cox. We styled her in some vintage glam pieces, but of course added a bit of an edgy flair. The rest of our shoots revolved around young budding actress, Lauren Tuma. As a model, I was attracted to her by her femme fatale bone structure and her ability to look sexy no matter the circumstance. These two girls are the epitome of what William Fancher Styling wants to achieve. Young, edgy, and fresh. This issue should reflect styles that make you want to go out in the middle of the summer and make some amazing memories. I enjoyed working on this issue more than most issues due to being able to jump into the reigns as stylist. I love a challenge and dressing a girl up and making her feel good is the ultimate challenge. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as I enjoyed making this issue. xoxo

As we all know, vintage is always in style. For whatever reason, we all have a love for old school fashion. Why keep everything so modern? Sometimes, a little vintage flair is all you need. And it does not have to be some huge statement. The right pair of John Lennon circle frame sunglasses can add a sophistication to your look that you could have never achieved before. Historians always tell us to remember the past unless we are doomed to repeat it, but the way I look at it, at least in fashion, there is definitely not a problem with repeating it. The history of fashion is so deep and diverse. There are hundreds of

thousands of different designers for you to pull your styling inspiration from. I personally always try to emulate three of my favorite artists: Diana Ross, John Lennon, and Janis Joplin. I throw in some seventies disco glam to counteract the hard British style that comes from The Beatles as inspiration. Do not be afraid to throw on that awesome jumper from the seventies, because for all you know, that could be exactly what people want from you.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR JEWELRY? “My grandmother is one of my main inspirations. She makes some of the most beautiful jewelry I have ever seen! Whenever I am wearing on of her pieces, I always get so many compliments. I want people to have the same reaction when they see my jewelry. I am also extremely inspired by the stones that I use. I have always been very intrigued by the way most of these stones are produced from the earth, each unique in its own way.”

WHAT ARE SOME EXCITING EVENTS COMING UP FOR YOU? “I am planning to do an open house back in my hometown of Huntsville, Alabama over winter break. This will give people a chance to see my jewelry in person, as well as be able to try it on and see how my pieces layer and work together. I love going to open houses and seeing what all is avaliable. This is also a great opportunity for those without social media to connect with me and see my creations, just in time for Christmas!”

HOW SHOULD PEOPLE CONNECT WITH YOU?

MKM DESIGNS IS AN EMERGING LEADER IN EASY-TO-WEAR JEWELRY FASHIONS. LOCATED IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, MARY KATHRYN MARTINSON HAS STARTED A REVOLUTION.

“The easiest way to reach me is either Facebook Message or Etsy Convo. Both are instant messaging platforms that gives me an easy way to look back on our conversation. Connect with me: MKM Design on Facebook, Etsy, and Instagram!”

After wearing this ensemble, Darby could not stop gushing about how sexy and confident she felt. The sequined dress gave her a sophisticated glamour, while the leather jacket, complete with studs, gave her that ifery edge she was looking for. To complete the look, Amelia gave her a bold lip and a sexy fly-away hairstyle.

o2 THE POWER OF PRINTS Prints can be a powerful asset to your colorful wardrobe. What else can explain your personal style while not becoming jumbled and tacky? The print can also be scary. There are so many options and it is very easy to pair the wrong ones. Do not fear! If the outfit makes you confident, then no one is allowed to say anything about the mixes of patterns. If we have learned anything from our time in styling, the oddest things come together to make a beautiful look. Be bold, be you.

WHO’S THAT GIRL? WHY LAUREN TUMA COULD BE HOLLYWOOD’S FUTURE

Lauren Tuma. You don’t know the name? Well, you will soon. Currently studying theatre at the SCAD, It seems that Lauren could be on her way to stardom at any moment. We took some time out of our lives to sit down and talk about her journey to now and her excitement for the future. “Well, when it comes to inspiration, I would have to cite the Spice Girls first. My parents introduced me to their music at a young age, and I was enamored with their energy and confidence.” The rest of the interview continues on page 11, and you should definitely check it out!

WHEN IT CAME TO STYLING LAUREN, I KNEW THE ESSENTIALS. SHE LOVES TO FEEL SEXY. SHE LOVES TO FEEL CONFIDENT. FINALLY, SHE LOVES TO PUT TOGETHER WEIRD COMBINATIONS. I KNEW WE WOULD GET ALONG INSTANTLY. WE PULLED PIECES FROM LOCAL CONSIGNMENT SHOPS, AS WELL AS SOME PERSONAL PIECES FROM HER CLOSET, AND WE BEGAN TO PUT TOGETHER SOME FUNKY ENSEMBLES. IMMEDIATELY, LAUREN BEGAN TO RESPOND TO THE FEMME FATALE STYLE OF CLOTHING. HARD METERIALS, BRIGHT PATTERNS, AND EDGY ACCESSORIES DEFINED THE STYLING FOR “THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.” DURING THE SHOOT, LAUREN COMMENTED ON HOW SHE WISHED SHE HAD THOUGHT OF THESE COMBINATIONS BEFORE. ONE THING LAUREN TALKED ABOUT OFTEN DURING OUR SHOOT WAS HER BELIEF IN SELF-CONFIDENCE PROPELLING SUCCESS. NOTHING IS ACHIEVABLE IF YOU DOUBT YOUR POTENTIAL.

MODELED BY ACTRESS LAUREN TUMA, THESE LOOKS FEATURE ECLECTIC ACCESSORIES AND POWERFUL FEMME FATALE LOOKS TO HELP YOU STAND OUT IN ANY CROWD.

BEING WEIRD AND BEING BOLD.

Sometimes it can be a little intimidating to let your freak flag fly while you’re dressing yourself. You worry that the people who look at your outfit are going to say you look bad, or weird, or strange... but, really, who cares? You should be excited to wehre whatever makes you feel like the best you possible. Lauren Tuma is a big proponent of this. “I believe self-confidence is all you need to succeed in an industry like acting. You have to be sure of who you are who you want, because rejection will always happen. The difference comes with how you feel about yourself.” As a stylist, I agree. What’s the point of looking good if you don’t feel good? Emphasis on the feel, if you please. The reality is this: would you rather look good and fit in or feel good and stand out? I choose the latter.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? “I just recently got finished with a show and am now trying to further my film training; I have a few auditions this week so wish me luck (“break a leg”).” ANY ADVICE TO PEOPLE PURSUING THEATRE? “My advice for anyone trying to pursue this career is, want it and go get it. This particular industry is all about work ethic so you have to want it and fully dedicate your time and heart to it. If it is your true passion you will find a way to be involved.”

WHO WERE YOUR IDOLS GROWING UP? “My inspirations for being a performer were definitely the Spice Girls. My parents introduced me to the Spice Girls when I was very young and I immediately decided that I wanted to sing and dance.”

WHEN DID THE ACTING BUG BITE YOU? “The acting bug bit me when I was first born, but I tried out many things before being fully aware. I came to the realization that this was what I was meant to do when I miserably failed at all sports and was using singing as a distraction to my opponents rather than using my actual sports skills and bowing to the audience when they would applaud a hoop being made (not by me). The first performance that sticks out in my mind as being the moment of truth that this was my passion was Godspell, which I performed with a competition troupe.”

FEAR IS A REALITY IN ANY PERSON’S LIFE. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT TAKES OVER? WE INTERVIEW A CURRENT PROFESSIONAL BALLERINA TO LEANR MORE ABOUT THE CRIPPLING NATURE OF AN EATING DISORDER.

DANCING IN THE SUMMER WHEN DID BALLET STOP BEING A HOBBY AND START BECOMING YOUR FUTURE? “I played just about every sport when I was little as well as ballet. At 12 years old I decided that I wanted to dance professionally because I loved it more than all my other sports. At 14 I moved to another ballet school to train intensely while completing high school online. At 19 I signed my first contract and moved to start my professional career.”

AFTER YOUR SECRET WAS DISCOVERED, HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO START DANCING AGAIN? “I was in denial at first and I kept dancing. It wasn’t until my body was giving out that I realized I had to do something if I wanted to keep dancing. I had an eating disorder for years before I ended up in treatment and I danced that whole time, but when I finally went to treatment I was limited on how much I could do. I was in treatment for about a year, and I was still able to dance some. It was extremely difficult to return to dancing after having to gain weight. I was miserable and couldn’t stand how I looked. It took a while to embrace a body that didn’t look sick anymore.”

WHO ENCOURAGED YOU TO OVERCOME YOUR FEARS AND TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS? “The therapists I met in treatment were the most influential people in my recovery as well as the therapists I have worked with since I left treatment. If it wasn’t for God and my faith I wouldn’t even be alive today and of course my family who paid for treatment and allowed me to keep pursuing my dreams.”

GIVE US AN UPDATE OF WHERE YOU ARE IN LIFE! “I am by no means recovered at this point. I have relapsed so many times since treatment, but I am a fighter and I am not giving up. I currently just came back from another pretty bad relapse, but I am determined to be okay one day. This is my third year as a professional ballet dancer and with God all things are possible.”

ANDRES, AS HIS FRIENDS CALL HIM, IS VERY EXCITED TO BE PRODUCING THESE PANTS FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. WITH DELIVERIES BEING MADE INTERNATIONALLY, WAKO WEAR IS POISED TO TAKE OVER THE FESTIVAL PANT MARKET.

WAKO WEAR: THE RISE OF THE FESTIVAL PANT. photography by katie bush, modeled by lauren tuma

FESTIVAL PANTS: YAY OR NAY? The rise of the festival pant was been an amazing adjustment in the fashion world. Slowly, fashion has begun to shift from skin tight and flashy to loose and comfortable. To emphasize this, we worked with Wako Wear Pant Company, a company that supplies these pants to the music festivals around the county, and did some shots with Lauren Tuma. Once she put the pants on, she was trandformed into a festival queen who was unable to stop hooping or posing for the people around us. The pants made her feel sexy and cool, adding vibrant prints onto a soft silk-like material. “These pants are probably the most comfortable pants I have worn in a long time,” expressed Tuma after the shoot. If you don’t trust a festival girl’s opinion, you will just have to try them on and see for yourself!
