Unbreakable bonds and bittersweet memories: a brief look at your sister’s role in your life and consciousness “Until at last our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.” - Edith Crawley, Downton Abbey You wished you were an only child. You hated sharing a bathroom, you always had to compromise on what to watch, the speed of the fan, and fought over who mom loved best. Growing up with a younger sibling can be annoying but there are some advantages. You learned to share, are more responsible, and there are even some proven health benefits. You are less likely to be overweight and having a sister in particular has been shown to be good for your mental health. The benefits just keep adding up as you get older. While you may have believed your sibling was cramping your style, weirdly enough, having a sibling of the opposite sex may actually make you more successful in relationships. You have a built-in confidante who knows about your most embarrassing moments and loves you anyway. Also, it’s nice to have someone to lean on when your parents get sick or old. Today your little sister is no longer the harbinger of the apocalypse (read ‘dad’s wrath’). The little pest is now a fun, fellow human who gives good advice and is a great designated driver. You will spend the rest of your life looking out for her. You can’t help it; it’s built into your DNA. But somewhere along the way she started looking out for you, too. So, how do you celebrate Raksha Bandhan with this person you (have come to) love and respect? She’ll always have your protection, so give her a gif to remind her that she is a strong, powerful, professional woman in her own right.
