The management of the sale will be under the control of the Williams Lake Bull Sale Association, made up of appointees from the following: B C Livestock Producers Co-Operative, B C Hereford Association, B C Angus Association, and B C Simmental Association An Annual Meeting shall be held each year to elect a Chairman and appoint a Secretary
Each contributor to the Bull Sale may make one (1) bid if he so desires Should this bid not be topped and the animal knocked down at the contributor’s bid, he must pay the normal commission on his bid
When animals which have been passed out of the ring unsold are sold on the premises by private treaty, the transaction shall be handled through the books of the sale and the commission paid
(NOTE: In the following clauses “purchaser” or “buyer” means the person who bids for the animal at auction, unless he (she) while acting as an agent, so signifies when signing the auction-form ) All purchases must be settled for within one hour of completion of Sale If any purchaser fails to settle for his purchase as stated, the Association reserves the full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further intimation, and any loss arising form such resale, together with keep and other expenses will be collected from the defaulter
(a) Contributor acting on behalf of absentee buyers will have their proceeds from that lot withheld until settlement of the purchases Immediately after each purchase is declared, the risk of the animal shall be exclusively with the purchaser, and it is declared that until a settlement shall be made in the terms of these conditions, the delivery of the animal shall be suspended
Entries will be catalogued and sold in four alphabetical groups: A to E, F to L, M to R, and S to Z These groups rotate annually, by moving the group selling last one year to first the next Further, the letters in each of the four groups will also rotate annually, with the letter appearing last one-year, becoming first the next The following will be conducted as one letter: “IJK”, “PQ”, “UV”, and “XYZ” In 2023 the entries will be catalogued and sold in the following order:
(M, N, O, PQ, R), (S, T, UV, W, XYZ)
(B, C, D, E, A), (F, G, H, IJK, L)
Entries: Each contributor will sell one bull from his string in the first round, in the order of sale; this shall be followed by the sale of the Champion and balance of that contributor’s string, followed by the Reserve Champion and the balance of that contributor’s string. The contributor of the Champion
& Reserve Champion have the option of not selling one bull in the first round. The sale shall then revert to the sale order with contributors selling the balance of their string. The only exception to these rules would apply to the Champion and or, the Reserve Champion, if they were a single entry, in which case they would sell in the Champion or Reserve Champion position respectively
7 The Bull Sale Association shall nominate two (2) sifters and a veterinarian These sifters are to work independently They shall be supplied with a selection sheet, showing only the lot number and date of birth Reasons for rejection shall be stated on this list These independent lists shall be signed and turned over the Bull Sale Association immediately following sifting The sifting calculation shall be based on the following: Any combination of 2 sifters or 1 sifter and 1 veterinarian giving a bull two (2) H’s, the bull goes home The veterinarian shall have final say in health matters Where in the opinion of the selection association, the defect is not considered sufficiently serious to warrant an animal being sifted for home, the association reserves the right to announce the defect in the Sale ring before the animal is offered for sale and to allow the animal to be sold either in the regular order of sale after all animals catalogued have been offered or to sift the bull out and not permit it to be sold at the sale All sifted bulls must be removed from the Sale Barn area forthwith to designated pens Such bulls may NOT be sold by private treaty on the Williams Lake Co-Op yards during the period of the Annual Williams Lake Bull Sale All papers of sifted bulls will be mailed to the contributor

When you get your newly purchased bull(s) home there are several management practices you should observe to get the best reproductive performance.
• FEEDING
Your yearling bull still has a lot of growing to do You should talk to the breeder on what ration the bull was on and feed accordingly with a feed of good quality hay or silage from now until breeding
Be careful putting your new bull in with other strange bulls Fighting and riding could injure him before he begins
•
Plan to use the bull in a restricted 45-60 day breeding season for the first time (if possible)
Observe him closely to ensure he is serving and settling females
• NUMBER OF COWS
A good rule of thumb is to turn him out with 1 cow for every month of age Thus, a 15 month old bull can be turned out with 15 cows
The bull should be put in a well fenced area prior to and after the breeding season A shed or other natural windbreak should be provided
Treat routinely for lice and worms
Run the bulls together with caution . Bulls of similar age or those which have bred cattle together will usually work
Check for any unsoundness which may develop
Vaccinate and semen test annually
Bulls are guaranteed by the breeder to be breeders if well managed

High reproductive efficiency is economically 5-10 times as important as rate of gain or carcass quality. Therefore, fertility is the foremost concern in bull selection. High fertility in bulls requires soundness in 3 basic areas: sex drive and serving ability, physical soundness and semen quality. Usually there is no assessment of sex drive in routine bull evaluations and some mating problems cannot be detected by a chute-side physical inspection. Therefore, producers must determine on their own whether bulls have adequate sex drive and serving ability.
The first semen a young bull produces has very poor quality and is low in sperm numbers. It takes 3 to 4 months from the onset of sperm production until a young bull reaches maturity and is able to produce good semen. In general about 45%, 75% and 95% of bulls are mature at 12, 14, and 16 months of age, respectively.
Scrotal circumference measurement is a highly accurate indicator of testis mass. Large testes are important for normal sperm production and adequate numbers of sperm for the high breeding pressure of short breeding seasons. In addition, large testes are strongly positively correlated with early onset of puberty in heifer offspring, early breeding of heifers, and high female lifetime productivity. Since scrotal circumference is highly heritable, producers should be careful to avoid bulls with below average testis size. In yearlings, scrotal circumference increases at about 1.5, 1.1, 0.8, and 0.4 cm from 11-12, 12-13, 13-14, 14-15 months of age, respectively.
The following tables show the average scrotal circumference for bulls according to age and breed. Bulls measured under cold conditions, or with excessive body condition, may have inflated measurements by 1 to 2 cm. The minimum recommendations in Table 3 eliminate bulls in about the bottom 10% for scrotal circumference.
