Welcome
From the President of the Board
T
he Colusa County Fair has been a part of me for nearly all of my life. It was an event to go to and meet friends, participate in exhibiting, and simply have a really wonderful, fun time. I have been honored to be involved with the actual workings and activities of the fair for 32 total years through my husband Chet’s years on the Board of the 44th District Agricultural Association and for the past ten, as a Director. As President of the Board, I care deeply for the Fairgrounds and the role it plays in the events and activities of Colusa County, bringing adults and children of all ages as participants and Fair-goers. To share in the activities, taste the food, take in the sights of children and adults on rides, showing animals, exhibiting all varieties of items (FFA, 4-H, mechanics, horticulture, crafts, photography, foods, etc.) with a real “old time county fair” atmosphere is a truly wonderful experience. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I invite you all to share in this joyful time and celebrate with us. Let’s create great fun memories and, as our theme says: ‘Sow It, Grow It, & Show It at the Colusa County Fair’! Hope to see you at the fair!

Step Right Up BY: ELIZABETH KALFSBEEK CONTRIBUTOR/WRITER

adies and gentleman! Step right this way to the big top to see the one and only Russell Brothers Family Circus! “It’s a show that’s been on the road for 16 years and features jugglers, magicians, hand balancers, illusionists, plate spinners and trained animals,” says Ed Russell. “We change the show every year, and this year’s show has gone over better than any show we’ve ever done. The audience loves it.” During the balancing act, a per-
former stacks chairs 18 feet in the air and balances on the top. Magician Ed Russell will perform a “Birds and Beasts” act, in which birds Hugo Birdini and Blizzard disappear, then reappear, and finally turn into Mr. Squeak the Magic Kitty! But birds are not the only animals to disappear during the show – a live person will, too. Russell Bros. Family Circus features the world’s only Avian Canon Ball, and audience members will be astonished watching Hugo Birdini shot out of a cannon and into a safety net across the 22-foot ring. “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had
watching people laugh and enjoy the show,” Russell, who doesn’t plan on retiring any time soon, says of his circus experiences. “It’s a very, very fun business to entertain people.” Ed and Steven Russell run the family and son operation. Ed, 74, has 43 years experience in the circus business, while Steven, 40, has been involved for 26 years. There will be seating for 400 people at each show, and the 30-minute show will be performed four times each day at the Colusa County Fair. It’s guaranteed to please children of all ages!

wooden coins back for fair SPECIAL TO THE WPR
T
he popularity of the woodencoin promotion for the Colusa County Fair has esired its return for next month’s celebration. Conceived a few years ago by fair CEO Carolan Meek, its success prompted the Western Fairs Association to name it the Small Fairs Best Single Day Promotion, and other county fairs have adopted the idea. Thanks the generosity of Central Valley Gas Storage (CVGS), $1,000 in wooden coins, redeemable at any Colusa County Fair food vender, are being handed out by fair “spies” around the county. A fair patron wearing a fair button or
overheard promoting the fair by a fair spy will receive a wooden coin. The coins are available at Bank of America, US Bank, Umpqua Bank, Butte Community Bank and Wells Fargo Bank in Colusa. In Arbuckle they can be found at the Umpqua Bank and at the U.S. Post Office. In Williams they are at the U.S. Post Office and at US Bank. In Maxwell, Stonyford and Princeton, the coins are at the U.S. Post Offices. Earlier this spring CVGS hosted the annual Fair Manager’s Dinner and now has agreed to sponsor the wooden coin project. Central Valley Gas Storage is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nicor Enerchange. Nicor is listed on the New York Stock

his year visitors to the Colusa County Fair will be able to have their own heart-pounding experience by looking into the eyes of live sharks at the Live Shark Encounter, the only travelling shark show in the United States. “The show time is announced, then the famous ‘Jaws’ music will start as the hydraulic door to the 7,000 gallon tank will slowly rise with smoke billowing out below,” explains www.haai. net on what visitors can expect from the show. As the smoke clears, people will see several species, including nurse sharks, lemon sharks, brown sharks, sand-tiger sharks and more, swimming around the tank. The announcer will offer educational information for spectators before an experienced diver enters the tank. “After watching the sharks for any aggressive behavior, the
diver will cautiously come in close contact with the animal that elicits more fear and fascination than any other creature in the sea,” states the Web site. As the show comes to an end, the audience is invited to head to the tank for a close up of the sharks with dedicated staff on hand to answer questions. Haai (meaning shark in Dutch), Inc., is owned and operated by two retired Ringling Brothers Circus daredevil stuntmen. “As young boys (Marco and Phillip) were fascinated by sharks and dreamed of having the first travelling live shark show,” states the Web site. “For years they studied, researched and experimented with the intricate filtration system that is used for the travelling 7,000 gallon saltwater tank.”
Exchange with the symbol “GAS.” CVGS is developing a natural gas storage facility between Princeton and Colusa. Project Development Director Jim Kiefer says it has been a pleasure getting to know and work with the people in the community. Collecting the coins has become competition among some coffee groups, and Meek says she anticipates that competition to spark again this year. She also reminds fair patrons only the 2009 edition coins will be redeemable at the fair. “Previous years’ coins are no longer redeemable, but they are still great collectibles,” she says.
The wholesome educational approach of Haai, Inc. includes photos and posters of many different species at the exhibit, information on sharks, and shark jaws of different sizes. The company has extensive knowledge of which species can survive in captivity and which ones will get along living together. They are also experts in filtration, water quality and feeding, and the divers are trained how to interact with the sharks in the water. When it comes time for the sharks to retire, Haai, Inc. donates the animals to various aquariums, ensuring their continued high quality of life. Come find out for yourself why Live Shark Encounter has been called “the ultimate attraction!”

orget the trip to the zoo this summer and experience the Royal White Tiger Discovery Education Experience and Exhibit at the Colusa County Fair instead! With no royal white tigers left in the wild, the animals are one of five tiger species left in the world. Only 40 royal white tigers are on exhibit in zoos throughout the United States, and there are less than 400 in the world. Fortunately locals will have the opportunity to see these animals in their element at the fair this year, brought by Zoo Dynamics. Visitors can experience the tigers by witnessing their majesty as they dwell in a 2,400 squarefoot controlled tropical jungle habitat,
including sound effects and chilled misting systems. According to Zoo Dynamics, “our exhibits and programs are a shift from the old style interpretation to experimental education. (They) are environments that are developmentally appropriate for children and adults, creating empathy and environmental consciousness for all wildlife.” The Royal White Tiger Discovery Education Program and Exhibit will promote conservancy efforts with interactive activities, daily shows and “tiger talks.” Visitors are able to watch the animal keepers feed the tigers and answer any questions. Zoo Dynamics also helps zoos by providing rotating
educational programs and theme exhibits including hard-to-maintain animals to other zoos, county fairs, resorts and other commercial events. “This program helps ensure the keeping of very exciting and entertaining exhibits all year round without the associated high costs of maintenance,” states zoopros.com. “This lets zoos (and other venues) provide their guests with animals they might not regularly see at their local zoo and also helps send the conservation message to guests for those species.”

Clown of Many Faces
L
inda is one of the finest, funniest female clowns in America. She is the “Clown of Many Faces” who brings a host of clown characters with costumes and props to provide a unique experience every time she performs. What does this mean? She has four characters with walk-around props to bring to your event: “PJ,” the total schoolgirl nerd; “Shylo,” the high energy cute one (at least she thinks so!); “Flo,” the diner waitress with pizzazz; and “Gladys Pumpernickel,” the forever cleaning mime, ala Carol Burnett. And, YES! THEY ARE ALL LINDA! Four clowns for the
price of one! Linda has the distinct good fortune to have spread her clowning antics for more than 20 years, from the West Coast of the United States to Russia, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Singapore. She has even toured with the Yankee Doodle Circus in New York and beyond. As an entertainer for children and families, she brings smiles to everyone she meets and greets. She has that lovable charm that makes every child, young or young-at-heart, feel special, and she treats them all with care and attention. Most fairs bring her back year after year because of her
willingness to provide the best show possible and her continual goodnatured attitude. Walk-around entertainment is second nature to her clown characters and is one of Linda’s strong points. She has won numerous awards for her creativity, enthusiasm and interactivity. Seeing her perform is a one-of-a-kind experience. Everyone who meets “PJ,” “Shylo,” “Flo” or “Gladys” never forgets the experience and talks about it long after she is gone. Her clown characters have even been used as models for paintings and figurines throughout the world. She has been featured in many of the original clown artwork pieces by the late Chuck Oberstein, and has posed for many statues by Ron Lee. She receives no royalties from the pieces. She just loves clowning!

Miss Colusa County
2008/2009
Karla Girimonte
B
eing chosen as Miss Colusa County is one of the top honors in our county. The winner is chosen for her hard work in school, community involvement, extracurricular activities, public speaking ability and beauty. Karla Girimonte was chosen last summer because she had all these qualities and more. The following is Karla’s account of what the experience has been like for her over the past year. Through winning Miss Colusa County in 2008, I have grown so much! The pageant itself and the preparation, it allows a person to meet new people and gain experience that so many young girls miss out on. The lifelong skills of public speaking and interviewing, learned through the pageant process, have helped me gain confidence in who I am and what I am capable of accomplishing. I am not a person that anyone would call pageant material. When I submitted my application I was never in it to win, I was truly there for the experience-- to do something out of the norm, and maybe along the way build a piece on to the woman I am growing up to become. I am surprised at how much I have grown this year and I have a lot of people to thank for that. The county has been so great to me this past year, thank you for inviting me to all your functions. The fairgrounds and all who are involved in the pageant, they make all of it possible. Most importantly I would like to thank my parent. They have seen me at my worst, but have helped me strive to be the best that I can be. Thank you! Finally, I would like to encourage other girls out there, even the girl who (like me) doesn’t feel she is pageant material, to try new things and step out of their comfort zone. When you do, that’s when the outcome may surprise you. Karla is 18 years old and is finishing her first year at Butte Community College. She loves working with high school kids through the ministries she is involved in, Young Life and the youth group at her church. She is working towards becoming a high school physical education teacher.

Mini Miss Colusa County 2009 mini Miss Candidates Eight hopeful girls will be competing for the title of Colusa County Mini Miss 2009. The contestants have been preparing for weeks for the June 3 pageant, learning public speaking techniques, interview skills, and developing poise and talent.
