Seasons Greetings The holidays can be a sentimental time for many people, a time to reflect on years past and to wonder about the future. It’s a time when people make a conscious effort to take time out of their busy lives to get in touch with family and friends with whom they may have lost contact. For many, it’s an optimistic time of year, an opportunity to take stock of our lives and give thanks for the many blessings we have been given. Don’t get me wrong. The holidays can also be a very stressful time. Especially in today’s economy, money is a constant worry for most. It’s at times like these when we need to remember that money can’t buy everything. Keep things simple. Spending time with family means much more than spending money

on trendy gifts.

now we can see the humor more clearly.

This year, and every year, I am always so very grateful to have such a wonderful husband and two happy, healthy children, and we can be together as a family. The years are flying by so quickly that I want to make as many special memories as we can. We have our little family traditions for future pleasant memories. Each year one of the kids gets to put the star on the tree, and when it’s time for the tree to come down, the other takes it off. They then switch the next year, and so far everyone’s happy. We go find our tree, haul it home and into the house, turn on the Christmas music and laugh about years past, especially the year our tree fell down right after we had just decorated it. Of course it wasn’t funny then, but

So, this year stop, take a deep breath and remember all that is truly important to you and your family. Start a new tradition or rekindle an old one. Hopefully you will enjoy what is a new tradition for the Williams Pioneer Review, our inaugural Colusa County Christmas Guide. We hope to expand on the publication next year and would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, stories, recipes and pictures. We at the Williams Pioneer Review wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous New Year. Sincerely,

Andrea Moore

“Does anyone remember Dommer’s Nursery at the end of Market Street in Colusa? You could go to Dommer’s and buy a big beautiful tree, have it flocked, AND have it delivered to your door. These are some memories and meanings of Christmas, shared by our friends and neighbors of Christmas’s past.” ~ Susan Gibbs

Megan Broderman

I Love the smell of a fresh Xmas tree permeating through the house. Most of the decorations for our tree we made in grammar school, so decorating our tree each year is like going down memory lane. One of my favorites was making Rudolph using one of our footprints for his body and our handprints for his antlers, he was so cute. I also loved being able to sleep in, but NOT wanting to.

Francene Tinkham Scoodles was my favorite toy. I put her in my wagon, sadly she fell out of the wagon....... a lot, and lost her little button nose, but I still loved her anyway. I still have Scoodles, she is now 74 years old. I also got nuts, hard candy, a tangerine, and 1 small toy in my Christmas stocking every year when I was a child. Thank heavens I never got coal!

Michael Harrington

My Mom traversed through the sleet and snow (we lived in New Jersey) to get me a guitar when I was 10, so I could pretend that I was one of the Beatles. I will never forget that Christmas. My sister got a Thimble City game that Christmas as well, and we played with that game for hours and hours. My Father and I always hung up the outside lights, my job was to hand him the lights while he was up on the ladder. “Hand them up soldier he would say to me.”

Aidan Sistrunk I Love my Nana’s English peas at Christmas dinner, and her cooking. I love opening my presents and we play games...I got a Driver 3 video game that I love to play.

The Mata Family Christmas is all about family. You can replace almost anything, but you can’t replace your family. Williams Pioneer Review: A Colusa County Christmas

Laurel Jobe I don’t have any children of my own, but I DO have a furry child, and she gets so excited at Christmas time. We brought home the tree yesterday and she was smelling and licking, and chewing off the bark (oops, Tawny no chewing the bark) hehe. She loves to look at the shiny decorations and hit them with her nose. She also gets her very own stocking filled with bones, chew toys, and squeaky toys. Happy holidays everyone!

Susan Gibbs When I was 5 years old, we had this huge tree in our living room and it was decorated with bubble lights. I loved the bubble lights because my parents would light up the tree, and we would wait and watch with excitement until they started to bubble. I started Old Tyme Christmas 12 years ago, to bring together the community and to encourage shopping in our very own downtown area. I remember the first year, all the committee members standing around the big tree by the courthouse waiting for the lighting of the tree, singing Christmas Carols, thinking I hope at least 25 or 30 people come this year, and when we turned around toward Market Street, hundreds of people all ages, had come out to attend. The sense of community at Christmas, what a great feeling.

Where have all my nostalgic Christmases gone? Christmas used to mean family, friends, closeness, now it’s shopping, cooking, and cleaning. You have to be thankful for what you have, like family and friends, not “things” you can buy.

What do you want for Christmas? Answer: I want a doll for Christmas What is your favorite part of Christmas? I like the presents.

A Soldier Is A Gift

As we celebrate Christmas, and we open our gifts, we realize what priceless gifts a soldier gives to our countrythe gifts of patriotism, service, and deep dedication to our nation. As we feast on a variety of fine Christmas delicacies, we acknowledge that a soldier personifies a variety of fine qualities: courage, good character, honor, fortitude amidst hardship, persistence in subduing evil, and bravery in the face of danger. A soldier is a cut above the rest of us, doing jobs we could not or would not do. While we are surrounded by Christmas comforts, we remember soldiers in places we would not want to be, bringing the gift of adaptability to any situation, no matter how harsh or difficult. As we “ooh” and “aah” over the Christmas lights and shiny ornaments we recognize that a soldier gives us the most cherished gift of all, the shining light of freedom. At Christmas, let us wrap our hearts and minds around our treasured soldiers. May they understand how very much their service means to us. Let us send the Christmas gifts of love, respect and admiration to our steadfast, loyal, magnificent warriors and their essential civilian support staff. They themselves are the most precious Christmas gift of all, our protectors-our soldiers. By Joanna Fuchs with permission poemsource.com 2008

Winter Wonderland Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland. Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown He’ll say: Are you married? We’ll say: No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town. Later on, we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the other kiddies knock him down. When it snows, ain’t it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland. Walking in a winter wonderland, Walking in a winter wonderland.

Oh Christmas Tree O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree! How are thy leaves so verdant! O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How are thy leaves so verdant!

Williams Pioneer Review: A Colusa County Christmas

Not only in the summertime, But even in winter is thy prime. O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, How are thy leaves so verdant! O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Much pleasure doth thou bring me! O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Much pleasure doth thou bring me! For every year the Christmas tree, Brings to us all both joy and glee. O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Much pleasure doth thou bring me! O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Thy candles shine out brightly! O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Thy candles shine out brightly! Each bough doth hold its tiny light, That makes each toy to sparkle bright. O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Thy candles shine out brightly!

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose, And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that Old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head, He began to dance around. O, Frosty the snowman Was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh And play just the same as you and me. Thumpetty thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, Thumpety thump thump,

Over the hills of snow. Frosty the snowman knew The sun was hot that day, So he said, “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away.” Down to the village, With a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all Around the square saying, Catch me if you can. He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop. And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the snowman Had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye saying, “Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day.” Thumpetty thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump, Thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow.

Little Drummer Boy Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum, When we come. Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum

I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum That’s fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum, On my drum? Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum Me and my drum.

Jingle Bell Rock Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun Now the jingle hop has begun. Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square In the frosty air. What a bright time, it’s the right time To rock the night away Jingle bell time is a swell time To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet Jingle around the clock Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet That’s the jingle bell, That’s the jingle bell, That’s the jingle bell rock.

Family Friendly Egg Nog

Ingredients 6 large eggs, plus 2 yolks 1/2 cup, plus 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 cups whole milk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg 1/4 cup heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks Additional grated nutmeg for garnish Cooking Instructions Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar, and salt in a heavy 3- or 4-quart pan, whisking until well-combined. Continue whisking while pouring milk in a slow, steady stream until completely incorporated. Turn on burner to lowest possible heat setting. Place pan on burner and stir mixture continuously until an instant-read thermometer reaches 160 degrees F. and the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Be patient. This should take about 25 to 30 minutes. Strain mixture through a fine sieve into a large bowl to remove any accidental small cooked bits of egg. Add vanilla extract and nutmeg, stirring to combine. Pour into a glass pitcher, decanter, or container and cover with a lid or plastic wrap. Refrigerate this egg custard mixture to chill at least 4 hours or up to 3 days before finishing. When ready to serve, pour heavy cream into a bowl and whip until it forms soft peaks. Fold whipped cream into cold custard mixture until combined. Serve eggnog in chilled cups or glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
