WILLIAM KING DESIGN
About Me I was born and raised in North Alabama. I was first introduced to Industrial design my junior year of high school when I discovered Spencer Nugent’s website IDSketching.com. Ever since then my curiousity and passion for design has grown and now I cannot imagine any other career path. I love design and that makes the long hours and constant work seem like nothing because I enjoy every part of the process. During the past year my passion for design has spread beyond the realms of Industrial design alone and I am very influenced by the graphic design discipline and try to work that into my projects. I am very flexible and would love to work with a company that offers opportunities to develop and explore both disciplines of design.

A Flat-Pack Lamp Collaboration With Ponoko User friendly assembly and lightweight materials build a good experience for this product, but it is still a lamp that makes a statement of beauty whether it is lighting up a room or sitting on a table unlit.
TargetMarket Ponoko is a website that caters to an audience who respect good design and enjoy the story behind the a product. People who also do not have the budget to spend on name brand designer appliances. Therefore, the design needs to be a inexpensive solution for a function lamp that also can be a stand alone piece of beauty whether in use or not.
Product that can fulfill small budgets.
Intuitive assembly eliminates frustration.
Design that is functional and beautiful.

IdeationSketching As the ideation phase began it was important to come up with viable designs that fit the criteria of my target audience and fulfilled key features I would classify in that market. Defy the material. To take the 2D materials and turn them into more. Into a lamp that you wondered how flat materials made the 3D form sitting in front of you. Geometric form that drew your eyes along it’s edges. A visually interesting product that is never dull to look at. isolate the main form.. Why have a beautiful 3D form when it gets muddled by the surrounding design.
ConceptIteration Iteration One The first model was a good starting point to get a foundation to figure out the basic form and from there move into the next models and figure out a frame and proper support. Iteration Two This model the frame and support system was explored but the frame did not flow with the main body shape.
Iteration Three The problems that arose with the base and the support were solved in this model. However, the frame needed to find a way to mirror the out side form. Iteration Four In this model the design was finalized enough to move into the final material. The full support frame was ironed out and did not distract from the main form and I was finally able to focus on the details of the design.

Screw the lamp cord in. The lip on the cord will lock the legs and bottom frame together.

Attach final supports into the bottom assembly.
FinalAssembly Slip the top assembly over that supports onto the bottom assembly. Snap the supports into the top like you did with the bottom and the lamp is complete.
9
TheDetails TOP RIGHT The lip of the light itself holds the legs in place when tightened. TOP LEFT The shpe of the supports inside mirror the form of the shade so that the shadows cast do not go against the form language. BOTTOM The material connections are clean and smooth to keep with the fluidity of the overall form.

Hangout MusicFest Avant Contract
Fall 2013 - Industry Projects For our 2013 fall semster we worked with three individual companies over a three month period. This forced me to learn how to balance multiple projects on one timeline and how to effectively allocate resources and time when each project needed it most to complete it on time without sacrificing quality of work. We also worked directly with the companies and I gained a lot of understanding into presenting and working with a corporate client.

UserResearch Grilling is commonly used in a social environment.
Trips between grill and the kitchen happen too often. Target Market (31-50)
Lack of space on grill for plates trays and tools.
No way to store the grill neatly to maximise outdoor space. Especially in urban areas.

ConceptIdeation Design Goals: Minimize number of trips between grill and kitchen. Grilling is a recreational activity. Promote it. Maximize efficiency of the space whether in use or not.

Initial Design Concept
I came to the conclusion that the problem of maximized efficient space lent itself to a rounded footprint for the grill where the focus was placed on the shelving to achieve the design goal. The following were key features of the first model:
1 2 3 4
Full length shelves for more storage during use. 360째 rotating shelving for a flexible workspace and clean storage.
3
1
Open front to store propane tank and an added shelf for trays. Flat-back for easy hinging on the lid.

Closed shelving took away all utility of the lower shelves when closed. Also research showed that users do not care to see the propane tank and deem it unsightly. These decisions were implemented as the second iteration of the model was made and resulted in these features in the design:

1
Open shelving to make use of the lower shelving. 360째 rotating shelving for a flexible workspace and clean storage. Rounded out for pleasing aesthetic and easier

and to manufacture. Closed lower body to hide the propane tank. Door added for easy access.

Delivered Design
After two rounds of presentations and critique we were nearing the end of the project so we needed to zero in on a final deliverable. I was able to zero in on a final design that met the design goals set out at the beginning and spent the final two weeks sketching and discussing final aesthetics then building the final model.

Postion Two
Further reductions on the shelving resulted in a very open design adding utility to from all angles.
3
Shelving no longer rotates but can be lifted from slots and moved into multiple positions. Still retaining the qualities that rotating shelves gave. Extendable shelving that creates large area of storage at a level that would be used.
Extended rim at the base for added support.

Char-BroilWing The Flexible & Functional Grill
A grill that performs to the standard and quality of the Char-Broil name. It has the same cooking area as other grills in the same class but provides more storage space. However, the added storage is not one sided. It is a flexible workspace and can be condensed to a smaller footprint when finished and be stored easily in smaller urban households.
