Welcome to the Apple Route! Only an hour east of Toronto by car, the Apple Route offers a vibrant range of activities. Highway 401 signs will direct you to the Heritage Route along old Highway 2, the core of the Apple Route, and “spurs” take the traveler to scenic Presqu’ile Park near Brighton, historical Lakeport, through Carrying Place and connects with the Loyalist Parkway. Numerous craft stores and roadside markets carry apple-theme items. This southern area of Northumberland County, pressed between the Great Pine Ridge and Lake Ontario has, for 200 years, enjoyed a rich agricultural history that brought both prosperity and continuity. Nestled in the rolling hills of Eastern Ontario’s “Apple Country”, the Apple Route meanders through pleasant orchards and friendly towns & villages between Port Hope and Trenton. The scenic countryside, pleasant orchards and friendly communities along the Apple Route are a haven for visitors with an appetite for the simple pleasures of a slower pace of life governed by the land, the water and the seasons. From several harbours you can sample trophy fishing on Lake Ontario. Museums and galleries flourish in all the communities along the route and more than sixty antique stores cater to tastes from the primitive to the formal. Beaches, public parks, wildlife sanctuaries and public footpaths all provide access to some of the prettiest landscapes in southern Ontario. Presqu’ile Provinical Park is an enormous resource for campers and birders. All along the Route you’ll be delighted by the range and sophistication of dining and accommodation facilities. The Municipality of Port Hope encompasses the quaint rural villages of Port Britain, Wesleyville, Welcome, Canton, Osaca, Perrytown, Campbellcroft, Garden Hill and Elizabethville. Why not take a drive into the country and discover their charms? Downtown Port Hope is a heritage conservation district and the main street boasts the best preserved streetscape in Ontario. There are over 280 designated heritage homes and buildings, more per capita than anywhere in Canada. Complementing the architecture are numerous antique, boutique, specialty and one of a kind shops. Self guided walking tour booklets are available at the Visitors Information Centre. The Capitol Theatre offers year round entertainment in music, dance, comedy, opera, and a professional summer season of plays. One of the last atmospheric theatres still in operation in Canada, the theatre was built in 1930 and is fully restored and barrier-free.

Architecture in Cobourg, OntarioVictoria Hall embodies the 19th century ambition of Cobourg. Built to compete with the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, city promoters hoped their edifice would lure government to the town. Now immaculately restored the town hall provides space for arts, culture and entertainment along with civic government.

Originally set tled by United Empire Loyalists, Cobourg blossomed as the holiday home of a number of wealthy Americans. Daily ferry service to Rochester, New York, allowed steel magnates from Pittsburgh to enjoy the healthful air. Town mansions from the Gilded Age are spotted throughout the town and many look out over the central park as if waiting for Gatsby to return.

The harbour, just a step south of Victoria Hall, is a modern yachting facility that keeps alive the trading traditions of the city. Types of apples Braeburn Orange to red in colour with a slight yellow tinge. Excellent for snacking and great for salads, pies, and baking. They also freeze well.

Cortland Red on top of a greenish yellow background. Sweet with a hint of tartness, this apple is good for snacking, pies, salads, sauces, and baking. Freezes well.

Empire Apples Green and red colored. Has a particularly sweet/tart taste. Mostly used in salads and excellent for pies as well as a snacking item. Good for freezing.

Fuji Apples Reddish pink in color. Was introduced into America from Japan. Good for snacking and for additing to salads. Good also for pies and sauces. Not good for freezing.

Gala Apples Yellow background covered with pinkish stripes. Is a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd’s orange red (a variety from New Zealand). Sweet tasting. Excellent for pies and snacking but not for freezing.

Golden Delicious Yellow in colour. Sweet tasting. Not related to the Red Delicious variety of apples even though the names suggest it. Compared to Red Delicious, this apple is sweeter, has a juicy texture, is rounder and the skin is thinner. Baking this apple brings out its unique flavour.

Granny Smith Green in colour. Mild flavoured with a nice balance of sweetness and tartness. Can be stored for as long as half a year. Great for baking, sauces and snacking.

Red Delicious Deep red in color. Taller and thinner in contrast to other round varieties. This apple is the most popular for snacking with its sweet, tart taste. The strong flavour is found in the thick and somewhat bitter skin. Although a great snacking apple, it is not the best apple for baking.

McIntosh Red in colour, Sweet, juicy and tart tasting. “Macs” were developed in 1811 by an Ontario farmer by the name of John McIntosh. They are one of the most popular and top selling varieties of apples in North America. Varieties such as Empire, Cortland and Spartan are produced by crossing McIntoshes with other varieties. Great for snacking, pies, sauce and salads.

Spartan Dark red over a greenish yellow. An all-purpose medium sized apple that is a cross between the McIntosh and the Newtown apple. Has a crisp texture with a uniquely sweet flavour. A great snacking apple. Excellent for sauce.

a large tract of land along the north shore of Lake Ontario to the British Crown. A number of villages sprang up along the shoreline, one of which was to become the village of Grafton. Originally called Haldimand Corners, the village was located at the junction of Danforth Road, (1800), the road leading southward towards Grafton Harbour, and the surveyed baseline road from Trenton (1790).

Heritage Honoured in Grafton Grafton ShopsGrafton probably has more buildings of historic and architectural significance per capita than any town in Ontario. Antique stores abound and just to the west of the town is Barnum House. Built in 1819, this remarkable neoclassical house is now operated as a museum with a variety of displays and activities that bring the area’s early history to life.

Be sure to drop in for tea One of the earliest inns in the area was Glover’s Inn, now the Grafton Village Inn. This property was later sold to Edward Pepper, and renamed Pepper’s Tavern. It was at a meeting of citizens at the Inn in the early 1800’s that the decision was made to rename the village Grafton.

Stretch Your Legs South of Grafton, the Nawautin Nature Sanctuary and public park allow visitors to enjoy the view over Lake Ontario. Take a break from driving by stretching your legs along the Waterfront Trail.

The Colborne Art Gallery Don’t forget to visit the Art Gallery in the attractive old Registry Office. A visit in the spring during the Apple Blossom Tyme Festival will give you a sense of the continuing importance of agriculture to the area. The Colborne Art Gallery is the home of the Colborne Society of Artists.which was founded in the spring of 1997 It is located in the historic East Northumberland Land Registry Office which had been sold by the provincial government to the village of Colborne for the sum of $8.00, on condition that it be maintained as a museum or library. A proposal that the building become an art gallery was made by Wilhelmina Kennedy, a Dutch immigrant then living in neighbouring Cramahe Township. This suggestion was welcomed by the Colborne Village Council. A group of local artists was organized by Wilhelmina into a co-operative to be known as The Colborne Society of Artists. The Society has succeeded
