Cypress Regional Hospital

The Cypress Regional Hospital (CRH)

in Swift Current, SK was completed in 2007 and quickly excelled into one of Saskatchewan’s leading acute healthcare facilities. The Cypress Regional Hospital offers a complete range of services including, but not limited to: general medicine, emergency, surgery, obstetrics/gynaecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, intensive care, lab servicese and on-site radiology. The Cypress Regional Hospital has emerged as one of Saskatchewan’s most innovative health facilities, adopting the National Health Institute’s Releasing Time to Care™ model and the International Health Institute for Healthcare Improvements Perinatal Collaborative. The facility itself has gained a reputation of being cutting-edge because of its strategic layout and innovative design. The spacious atrium upon entering the Hospital is unique and provides a nontypical hospital welcome. With a blend of natural ambient lighting and warm colour tones, the facility is as welcoming as it is highperforming. The Cypress Regional Hospital has been designed to provide an inviting and less stressful atmosphere for our patients, their families and friends, and staff. The Cypress Regional Hospital has been designed functionally and effectively. Departments are strategically positioned so the most common services are located centrally while complementing services are placed as close together as possible. For instance, the emergency room is located directly below the surgical and obstetrics/gynaecology departments and a large elevator provides direct and immediate access. The Cypress Regional Hospital is also on the leading edge of technology advancements. Digital storage systems like the Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) make distance irrelevant. It is able to instantly transfer patients’ digital images throughout Saskatchewan and beyond.

Our focus is to be a leader in rural health excellence. Help us achieve this focus. We are always looking to improve our services. If you have any suggestions, comments, or concerns about how to make your care more effective or efficient at the Cypress Health Region, please contact us. All comments are kept strictly confidential. Please forward all suggestions, comments, and concerns to the Cypress Health Region: Attention: Quality Care Representative 429 4th Ave. N.E. Cypress Regional Hospital

Welcome

A message from the CEO Staff, physicians, and volunteers throughout the Cypress Health Region are gifted, caring people who have devoted their time and careers to providing you, our patient and our customer, with high quality healthcare services. The Cypress Health Region is working to establish a culture that is based on excellence. We strive to provide you with the best possible experience from the moment you enter any of our more than 20 facilities, including the Cypress Regional Hospital. Delivering healthcare services in the Cypress Health Region is an incredibly complex undertaking. At any one time there are thousands of people in our facilities. Whether those thousands of people are requiring medical services, or are simply visiting a loved-one to wish them a speedy recovery, our goal is to provide a positive experience that exceeds expectations. While healthcare service delivery is complex, it is individually tailored to each patient. The Cypress Regional Hospital is a facility which is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days of the year. Acute care services are always available at this facility. Regional Health Authorities in the province of Saskatchewan are challenged to meet rigorous schedules, often with limited resources. This challenge is one which we believe is best met head-on. Through excellent people and excellent care, our health region has been able to reduce wait times in a variety of areas and is continuing to work to further improve wait times. A recent Patient First Review study has provided our health region with stories from patients and their families. This feedback helps drive change and allows us to achieve our vision of being a leader in rural health excellence. During your stay at the Cypress Regional Hospital you will encounter many Cypress Health Region staff members and volunteers. Each staff member and volunteer of our health region takes pride in making your stay as enjoyable as possible. The Cypress Health Region provides staff and volunteers with educational opportunities, including training specifically focused on providing you with the best service possible. Together, we commit to providing you safe, quality health services with compassion, respect, and accountability. Thank you for entrusting your care to us. Beth Vachon Chief Executive Officer Cypress Health Region

Patient Safety and Privacy Patient Safety Safety is the #1 value of the Cypress Health Region and we are committed to providing a safe environment for all individuals. As a patient you play a vital role in safety!

Patient Safety Tips:

• Ask a family member or a friend to be your advocate. An advocate is a friend, family member, or someone you trust. They can be your eyes and ears while you are in the Hospital. They can help get things done and speak up for you if you can’t. • When you visit any healthcare facility, make sure to wash your hands. Don’t be afraid to ask your healthcare professional to wash their hands too. Hand washing is the single most important thing that anyone, including you, can do to prevent the spread of infection. • Patient Identification. Do not let anyone give you medication or perform any procedure unless they check your identification (ID) band. Anytime an ID band is placed on your wrist always read the information and make sure it is correct. • Make sure the doctors and nurses know all of the medications you are taking, including over the counter medications (ex. aspirin) and dietary supplements (ex. vitamins and herbs). • Look at all the medications you receive. If the medications you are given do not look familiar, alert your doctor or nurse. • Falls can lead to serious injury. Tell your healthcare provider if you have had a fall at home or feel unsteady on your feet. • If you are having surgery make sure that you, your doctor, and your surgeon all agree on what will be done. Speak to a member of your care team about the Surgical Safety Checklist. • When you are discharged from the Hospital, ask your doctor or nurse to explain your home treatment plan. Make sure you know which medications to take when you go home. Your medications may have changed while in hospital.

These standards examine all aspects of health care, from patient safety and ethics, to staff training and partnering with the community. Cypress Health Region employees devote their time to learn how to improve what they are doing in order to provide the best possible care and service for their patients and clients. Patient Experience Survey The Cypress Regional Hospital participates in a Patient Experience Survey that was developed by the Health Quality Council of Saskatchewan. This survey has been implemented in hospitals throughout the province. The survey questionnaire consists of 10 questions, enabling the patients to voice their opinions on their care during their hospital stay, identifying both positive and negative aspects of their experience. All inpatients from Cypress Regional Hospital will be invited to participate prior to discharge. We hope you choose to take part in the Patient Experience Survey as we value and appreciate your feedback.

Daily Visual Management Cypress Health Region has implemented a Lean management system. A vital part of the Lean management system is a well-functioning visual management system, including daily visual management with visibility walls and huddles. As a patient or family member you will see staff gather at the visibility wall during the day. You will see them huddle for 10 to 15 minutes to discuss the daily work in the area as well as well as any improvement opportunities. Some of the benefits of Daily Visual Management include: Less ‘firefighting’ at the front line, more time for improving the daily processes because problems are identified and dealt with at the appropriate levels of the organization before they grow out of proportion, and less need for meetings and committees as they will be redundant, among others.

Your Admission Day Entering the Facility There are three main entrances to the Cypress Regional Hospital. The primary entrance is clearly marked ‘Main Entrance’ and has motion activated, automatic doors for patient convenience. This door is to be used for all non-specialty purposes (ie: lab, x-ray, etc.) by patients, families, and other visitors to the facility. The main entrance is open from 7:00am to 8:00pm. A second entrance is available to the right of the main entrance and is clearly marked ‘Emergency’. This entrance is to be used only in the case of emergencies or for after hour needs. The emergency entrance is open 24 hours per day. A third entrance is reserved exclusively for home care clients, chemotherapy/renal dialysis clients, and Meals on Wheels volunteers. This entrance is on the west side of the Cypress Regional Hospital and is open from 8:00am to 3:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Cellular Phones Cypress Health Region policy states that all persons entering our facilities shall have limited usage of cellular telephones, cordless telephones, and 2-way radios. There shall be a minimum of two (2) meters between the person and any medical equipment before answering a call. Patient and guests to the Cypress Regional Hospital may use their cellular phones in areas that are free from medical electronic equipment and instrumented clinical areas. These areas include, but are not limited to, waiting rooms, cafeterias, offices, lounges, and patient rooms where medical equipment is not in use. This policy has been implemented to minimize the risk of electromagnetic interference from the use of cellular phones and 2-way radios with the operation of medical equipment. Specialized medical equipment may be susceptible to interference from the transmitter’s power and frequency. Medical equipment or clinical laboratory equipment may exhibit unexpected behaviours such as altered display outputs and unexplained alarms when cellular phones or 2-way radios are used in close proximity to them. Generally the greater the distance between the medical equipment and the cellular phone or 2-way radio the less likely that the equipment will be affected.

The designated area is outside of the front entrance at the end of the sidewalk leading out from the main entrance. Please be respectful of your health, the health of others, and the property of the Cypress Regional Hospital while using the designated tobacco area. The no smoking policy is a part of our commitment to your health. While you are a patient in our Hospital you should be aware that smoking can potentially affect your care: it causes an increased risk of stroke, is responsible for 85% of all lung cancers and 85% of cases of chronic obstructive lung disease, and increases the risk of a number of other cancers and medical disorders.

Did you know the following facts about quitting smoking? • Within just 20 minutes, your blood pressure and heart rate decrease to normal levels • Within a few hours, your risk of having a stroke drops significantly by about 40% • Within 8 hours, the levels of carbon monoxide in your blood decrease while levels of oxygen increase to normal • After one day, your risk of a heart attack decreases • Within a few weeks, your smoker’s cough (that isn’t due to chronic lung damage) should clear up • You will feel less tired and won’t experience extreme shortness of breath while exercising • After one year, you are half as likely to develop heart disease as a smoker. You will notice that your overall energy levels increase - you feel better! • After 10 years, your risk of developing lung cancer decreases by almost half • Smokers who have illnesses and who quit smoking recover better and live longer than those who don’t quit Please let your doctor or nurse know if you would like to kick your tobacco habit. Smoking cessation packages are available to patients to assist in eliminating tobacco addiction. The Cypress Regional Hospital is tobacco free outside of the designated smoking area. No use or sale of any tobacco products is permitted inside or on the grounds of any facility owned by the Cypress Health Region. Tobacco can include cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, or other related products.

Spiritual and Religious Care A Sanctuary Room is available for anyone to use. The Sanctuary Room at the Cypress Regional Hospital is located on the second floor and through the doors located directly across from the elevators. Spiritual care providers are a personal preference. Patients are welcome to contact their spiritual care provider at any time, however, any spiritual care provider must go through the Cypress Health Region’s volunteer services program prior to providing spiritual care in the facility. This protocol is in place so that the spiritual care provider is provided with a volunteer nametag to be identifiable in the facility, as well as to have a criminal record check performed. Volunteer Chaplain services are available to you upon request. www.cypresshealth.ca

programs & services with physicians and nurses who have specialized skills in treating emergency patients. Critical Care is a 24 hour service open 7 days per week, treating approximately 22,000 patients per year. When you arrive, you will register at the ED Registration desk, you will then be assessed by a Triage Nurse to determine your care requirements. Those with serious injury or illness will be treated before those triaged as less urgent. The ICU provides the most intensive care and treatment for inpatients within the Cypress Regional Hospital. It is a four bed unit that serves approximately 500 patients per year. Each of the four rooms is electronically monitored, providing clear visualization to nursing staff when they are not providing direct patient care. This feature is for visual monitoring only; there is neither recording nor sound associated with this system. Families play an integral role in the patient’s recovery and length of stay in the CCU. To provide as much comfort and support as possible the Cypress Regional Hospital provides pull out chairs that can be used to rest during the visit and, if required, a family room is located outside the doors of the ICU. This room has a couch, table and chairs, phone access, TV, DVD player, and a small kitchenette. For patient safety the entrances to both ED and ICU are locked. For ICU family members, please enter the family room and dial “413” on the phone provided. This will connect you with one of the nurses in the unit. Families must state their name, the patient they wish to see, as well as their relationship to that patient. Restriction of visitors may be determined by the team if it is in the best interest of the patient.

Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation Inc. The Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation works hard to ensure the healthcare you deserve is here when you need it. With that in mind, the Foundation has purchased many pieces of medical equipment to Keep Healthcare Strong in southwest Saskatchewan, throughout the many facilities in the Cypress Health Region. Some of the more recent purchases include,

Cypress Regional Hospital: • • • •

Holmium Laser CT Scanner Panda infant warmer ‘Men’s Health’ ultrasound probe and biopsy equipment

The Foundation has also assisted and participated in community fundraising efforts in Maple Creek, Shaunavon, Ponteix, Gull Lake and Cabri to help outfit and equip facilities and meet the needs of healthcare in these communities. In fact, there have been purchases made for every single healthcare facility in the Cypress Health Region in the last two years. The Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation is proud to serve the people of southwest Saskatchewan. The partnership with our donors is making a difference in the quality and availability of healthcare within our region.

What does the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation do? The Mandate of the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation Inc. reads that “we will gather, administer and disburse funds to improve the quality and availability of healthcare for all residents of southwest Saskatchewan”. We accomplish this in two main ways: 1. Working with Cypress Health Region, we determine what healthcare equipment is needed to continue the current level of services for residents or can be used to expand available services within the Health Region. Once this is known, we structure a local or region wide program to gather funds and we use these funds to support the purchase of the equipment. 2. In 2001, a Donor helped us to create a Scholarship Endowment Fund that is used to support the training needs of existing healthcare providers or others wanting to become healthcare providers. Individuals apply for financial assistance and twice yearly, the Foundation reviews these applications and approves the disbursal of funds to support individuals as they train to provide quality healthcare within the Cypress Health Region.

Cypress Regional Hospital

foundation How can you help? There are a variety of ways that you can support the Mandate of the Foundation and by extension, healthcare within the Cypress Health Region: 1. You can participate in any Foundation hosted or third party event where the proceeds will be directed to the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation. Examples would be our annual Golf Tournament (normally held in early June); our annual RadioThon (normally in late September) or you can attend the annual Night out in Greece fundraising banquet (hosted by the Greek Orthodox Community of Swift Current and normally held in late October). 2. You can provide a financial or in-kind gift to any of the Foundation’s ongoing programs: a) our “In-Memorial” gift program; b) our “In-Honour of” gift program; c) our “Lens Implant” program; or d) our “Grateful Patient” program. Each of these programs are flexible to the point that you can designate which healthcare facility (within the Cypress Health Region) or which specific service or program you would like to support. You can also allow us to use your financial gift where we feel it will be of the most benefit to all residents. 3. You could allow for the health and wellbeing of future generations by establishing what is known as a “Legacy or Planned” gift. This type of gift takes some effort on behalf of the gift giver to establish, but they are invaluable to the Foundation as Planned/Legacy Gifts are normally larger and can therefore be used to fund the purchase of larger more expensive equipment pieces. Alternatively, these larger gifts can be used to re-equip a facility/program to ensure the quality of service remains strong and effective for the residents being serviced.

Where can you get additional information? The Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation operates out of the Habitat for Healthcare Building, located right across Saskatchewan Drive from the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. Our address is 2051 Saskatchewan Drive. Our Hours of Operation are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday and we would appreciate your visit or telephone call at (306) 7783314. Further, we would encourage you to visit our website at www.drirwinfoundation.com for additional details on who we are, what we do, what we have done, what we are currently working toward and how you can help and to be perfectly clear – your help is needed if we are to accomplish what needs to be accomplished.
