Community Health Guide
Site Manager’s message....... Warm greetings from the staff and volunteers of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. We are pleased to bring to you this Community Health Guide which provides information about our services. As a not-for-profit community health and social service agency we are grateful for the strong community support we receive from clients, volunteers, community groups and businesses. We also appreciate the generosity of our donors. This visible and tangible support enables the Victorian Order of Nurses to continue its mission of delivering quality services to the area. In the last year, the Victorian Order of Nurses in Lethbridge has developed the foot care program to help people remain mobile and the wellness program to help businesses maintain productivity through healthy employees. The Victorian Order of Nurses in Medicine Hat continues to offer several services including home support, foot care, flu clinics, wellness and community detox. These are just examples of how your support to the Victorian Order of Nurses directly impacts our local communities. We invite your comments on how we can help your community become healthier. A special thank you to our community supporters, listed in this guide, for making this guide possible. We also thank Willow Publishing for the professional manner in which they completed this project. Please call me at 1-403-529-1222 or 1-888-854-7785 with your suggestions. Foot Care Program VON ABS offers foot care in clinic settings, at home and at our office conveniently located in the Co-op Mall Healthy lifestyle, optimum mobility and independence are important for people of all ages. The average person walks approximately 200,000 miles in a lifetime and puts 700 tons of weight on each foot every day. Occupational activities, athletics, improper foot wear and individual differences in gait also impact foot health. Special consideration also needs to be given to individuals who have certain medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or neuromuscular disorders. Some medications also affect the structure and health of the foot.
18

The high standards of care are based on evidence and research. We use sterilized equipment. Information is kept current and monitored by the VON National Best Practice Team. An appointment with the foot care nurse may include: • A general overview of your health and a thorough assessment of your feet • Trimming of nails • Treatment of ingrown and/or thickened nails • Callus and corn care • Dry skin care • Foot care education • Comfort measures • Referral to other health care professionals where necessary The emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention in this program is just one aspect of our wide range of community health care solutions that meet the needs of Canadians from coast to coast.
