Year 5

Geography Children will learn about the history of space exploration. Learn about early astronomers. They will also look to the future, considering the possibilities of space travel for all. History This term, we are focusing on the history of space travel and chronology using timelines. Physical Education PE will be taught weekly by Live and Learn, who will focus on a range of outdoor team sports. The children will focus on improving their Cricket skills this term. We are particularly looking forward to Sport’s Day later in the term. PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) We will focus on hygiene and how important this is to our good health. Real Project This term the Y5’s hope to launch their own rockets and build space buggies.

Dear Parents/ Carers, The Summer term in Y5 will be full of exciting opportunities. As well as introducing our new topic: Earth in Space we also have a visit from a Planetarium booked for this term. This will give the children some idea of the vastness of Space. We will focus on a new class text ‘ The Jaimie Drake Equation’ by Christopher Edge. We will explore the Earth in Space through art, DT and French. Towards the end of this term, you will receive a report which will provide details of children current assessment levels, their progress over the year and their targets for moving into Year 6. Literacy Lots of our writing will be based on our class text – The Jamie Drake Equation. We will be developing our skills in researching and organising information to create non-chronological reports about our Solar System. The children will take part in preparing a balanced argument about whether the earth is flat or a sphere. Explanation texts will be written about how rockets are launched. The children will also be involved in writing and reciting their own poetry, based around space and its wonders. Numeracy In maths the children will be consolidating their previous knowledge and studying a range of mathematical concepts involving the four operations. ‘Bigger’ numbers linked to space and the planets will be manipulated. Data Handling will involve organising facts about the planets, the Solar System and the phases of the moon.

Science This will involve studying Space and Astronomy. Children will name and locate planets in the Solar System and understand the Milky Way. Exploring the contribution made to astronomy by the Ancient Greeks and Identifying star constellations. We will also learn about different types of force, including gravity.

ICT/ Computing Research to support the history and literacy aspects or our topic will be published. Spreadsheets and databases will be used to organise space information. Children will learn how to safely share information through email. They will begin to use programming software.

Design Technology/ Art Space will be represented through a variety of media. We hope to complete some sewing and fabric representations of space.

Music The children will have a range of musical experiences using the Charanga Music Program.

RE This term we will focus on studying Islam- How do Muslims use the Qu’ran.
