Dear Parent/Carer Reading Champion Celebrations

Willow Tree Academy celebrated the wonderful work of our reading champions. Time was taken to present the Hilary Ford Awards for the Most Improved Readers for the Spring Term. Well done to all the children who received an award this term, your hard work is paying off. Thank you to David Lawrence (author of books about the amazing adventures of “Bradley Baker) for attending our event.

Hathersage

On Tuesday, 7th May, 2019, over three days, Miss Sealey, Miss Johnson and Mrs. Ebbs classes were taken on an education visit to Hathersage to link to their work in the classroom about Victorians. The children first attended Abbeydale in their Victorian dress to discover what it was like to live, and go to school, in Victorian times. The children also visited Peak Cavern. Thank you to all the staff for giving up their time and children for their amazing dressing up and enthusiasm to take part and learn.

Year 6 A huge well done to all our year 6 pupils. You rose to the challenge this week and showed off your amazing abilities during your SATs. You should all be very proud of yourselves – we are!

Well being

We have recently held our first well-being week in school where we focussed on mental health. We discussed how mental health is about feelings, thinking, emotions and moods and that looking after our mental health is as important as looking after our physical health. Every day during the week the children explored one of the ‘5 Ways to Well-being’. These were simple task that were easy to remember and as well as making them feel better in the moment, and also help build good mental health for the future. Why not try giving them a go at home too – it would be lovely to hear about some of the things you have done to help keep healthy.

Five Ways to Well-being

Connect – Positive relationships (connections) impact and support us every day. Talking to other people makes us feel better. Take time to get to know people. Activity Ask the person next to you about their weekend. Tell the person next to you something they did not know about you. Get Active – Exercise is good for your body, but it is good for your mind too. Exercise can be a way to deal with negative thoughts. Activity 15 minute skip, Dance around for 15minutes, go for a walk. Be mindful – noticing what is going on with our bodies and minds is important skill for staying healthy mentally. Take time to check in with your thoughts and feelings. Activity Sit in a quiet space, close your eyes, focus on your breathing and take in the sounds that are happening around you. Keep Learning – Learning keeps our brains healthy and learning something new can be a great way to improve mood. Activity Pick a topic and see what you can learn about it in 5 minutes. Give to others – Helping other people makes us feel better about ourselves. ‘Doing good, does you good.’ Activity Offer to help someone. Mrs. Adams – Head of School
