Dear Parent/Carer

Crucial Crew On Thursday, 3rd October, 2019, the Year 6 children enjoyed a day at Crucial Crew, The Lifewise Centre at Hellaby. This event is organised by South Yorkshire Police, together with other emergency services, to demonstrate scenarios which happen in everyday life and how to cope with them; what to do in an emergency, etc.

Mental Health Week On Thursday, 10th October, the children supported Mental Health day by wearing something yellow. All week the children explored five ways to wellbeing: be active, take notice, keep learning, give and connect.

Grimm & Co Over the last couple of weeks Grimm & Co have been set up in our hall inspiring the children with their literacy - they have been learning about the founder Graham Grimm and helping him to uncover his memories.

The Year 3 children received a letter from Graham Grimm asking if they could help make a potion to get his memories back. They created a plan for instructional writing to help and followed the instructions carefully. On Friday, 18th October the Year 3 parents had a wonderful afternoon having been invited into school to see the Grimm & Co Project Space and looked at the children’s work.

Harvest Festival On Monday, 21st October, 2019 we held our Harvest Festival Assembly to celebrate and give thanks for this special time of year. Two of our Student Council Members rang our local food bank to arrange for them to collect all the wonderful donations you have kindly given to school for which we are very grateful. Thank you.

Gainsbrough Old Hall On Tuesday, 22nd October, 2019 the Year 5 children were taken on an educational visit to Gainsbrough Old Hall. The children were able to learn about the Tudors and work in a real Tudor kitchen.

Poppy Appeal The children will be selling poppies for a donation at break times. The children can also buy to support the Poppy Appeal: Zip Pull (50p), Reflector (50p), Silicon Wristband (£1.00) or a Snap band (£1.50). Last year Herringthorpe Juniors raised a total of £296.57p – thank you.

Our 4 Key Priorities this year This year we have decided upon 4 key areas for development through school. These are:: Priority 1: English. We will continue to focus on the development of reading. Looking at improving pupils love of reading, their understanding and fluency. Priority 2: Mathematics. Our main focus for this subject area is times tables. We will be working hard to improve pupils understanding and recall, especially those in lower school in preparation for national times tables test at the end of year 4. Priority 3: Science. We will be continuing to develop pupils knowledge of STEM in the curriculum and wider. We will also be looking at how we used ICT to support teaching and learning in this subject area. Priority 4: Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) and behaviour. We will be looking out our provision for those pupils with SEMH needs in school. Another focus for this priority is the implementation of a restorative practice approach through school – more information on this will be shared shortly.
