Dear Parent/Carer Magna On Monday, 25th February, 2019 the Year 3 children were taken on an education visit to Magna. The children were able to step back in time and see the life of a steelworker. The children looked at how the steelworks were once used and found out some interesting facts about the manufacturing of steel. Thank you to all our parent volunteers who came along to help.

Kelham Island On Tuesday, 26th February the Year 6 children had an excellent day experiencing life during WW2 at Kelham Island. The children dressed up as evacuees and took part in several workshops that gave them an insight into evacuation, air raids and the home front. Everyone had a great day especially the singing at the end of the day!

Jeff Rich Visit HJS Last week, we were extremely lucky to have a special visit from Jeff Rich the drummer from Status Quo. The children were engaged and enjoyed a wonderful performance by Jeff and even had the opportunity to join in.

World Book Day On Thursday, 7th March (World Book Day) we invited parents/carers/grandparents to join us having a reading breakfast. All children were encouraged to dress up as a character from a book. Everytime the bell rang, throughout the day, the children had to stop what they were doing and read their current or favourite book! Thank you to all our parents, grandparents and carers who helped their children dress up, there were some fantastic creative costumes – all the children looked amazing and enjoyed the day. Year 6 boosters The dreaded SATs are fast approaching and in order to make sure that all our children are well prepared we put on booster sessions on a Monday and Tuesday evening. All staff in school give-up their time to provide this opportunity for year 6 pupils pupil’s and it is hoped that all pupils in year 6 will attend. Please look out for a letter giving more detail about this. Author visit We have a very exciting visitor next week – David Lawrence (author of the Bradley Baker series). He will be leading an assembly and then later in the week there will opportunity for children to purchase one of his books. Look out for a letter providing more detail on this.

Sensory garden I am very excited to announce work has finally started on our sensory garden at the top of school. We have spent a long time planning this and the garden is the final phase of grounds development for us. Our inspiration for the garden was the Fibonacci sequence. This is a mathematical concept looking at sequence that can often be observed in nature itself. The space has been designed to allow for breakaway spaces allowing opportunities for reflection. Features are being included that will support with our curriculum such as sound and light scapes and fossils. Year 6 pupils have been up to the area already and have begun planting trees and are looking forward to being able to help with more planting once the main structure has been completed. Mrs. Adams – Head of School
