The Moanin’ Frogs

Saxophone sextet The Moanin’ Frogs are redefining chamber music. Rooted in the classical tradition and theater of the American vaudeville show, the group’s spirited arrangements, creative choreography, and technically precise performances of jazz, pop, and classical music delight fans across the world.

The first touring group of their instrumentation since the early 1930s, The Moanin’ Frogs demonstrate the full line of saxophones, including bass, baritone, two tenors, alto, and soprano. This gives them a big symphonic sound and the ability to perform highlights from the Vaudeville repertoire, as well as entire orchestral works, with only six players. Their name, a contraction of the 1914 and 1916 hit titles That Moaning Saxophone Rag and The Bull Frog Blues, hints at their ability to hop convincingly between genres: They are equally at home as concerto soloists, burlesque show musicians, jazz improvisers, and chamber ensemble players.

William Florian Trio, The John Denver Story

William Florian, world-renowned singer-songwriter and entertainer, weaves stories, songs, and humor in this tribute to folk musician John Denver. Sing along with him as he performs Denver’s most celebrated songs, including Take Me Home, Country Roads; Sunshine on My Shoulders; Annie’s Song; Leaving on a Jet Plane; and many more.

Florian’s amazing musical journey started at age 11, when he received his first guitar after watching The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. His road to fame is as much a lyrical journey as the folk songs he plays, and this type of wandering is exactly how he entertains. You will get an up-close-and-personal musical journey recounting the life and achievements of the legendary Rocky Mountain High minstrel, John Denver.

Jeannette Sorrell & Apollo’s Fire Perform Mozart & the Chevalier

Under the dynamic direction of founder Jeannette Sorrell, Baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire demonstrates the mastery that has won them great renown over three decades, performing a mix of longtime favorites and exciting (re)discoveries by Mozart and one of his illustrious contemporaries, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

The performance opens with the overture from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, then intersperses more of his music with that of another composer who is less known today but whose place in music history is essential: Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, sometimes referred to as “the Black Mozart.” Born in Guadeloupe, Saint-Georges rose through the ranks of French high society thanks to his exceptional musical gifts—but his way was often blocked by prejudice, and he has been relegated to relative obscurity in the history books. Join Apollo’s Fire and maestra Sorrell on this unique and unforgettable musical journey!

Exhibition On Screen— My National Gallery, London

One of the world’s greatest art galleries, the National Gallery in London is full of masterpieces, an endless resource of history, and an endless source of stories. But whose stories are told? Which art has the most impact and on whom?

The power of great art lies in its ability to communicate with anyone, no matter their background, beliefs, or art historical knowledge. This film gives voice to those who work at the gallery—from cleaner to curator, security guard to director—as they identify the one artwork that means the most to them and why. People from all walks of life make surprising choices of both well-known and lesser-known artworks, and a few beloved celebrities explain what they head for when they visit the gallery as well. These heartwarming, moving, and surprising stories are used as a lens through which to explore the 200-year history of the National Gallery and what the future may hold for the spectacular space.

Lahav Shani Conducts Prokofiev & Rachmaninov—With Martha Argerich

Living legend Martha Argerich joins Lahav Shani and the Wiener Symphoniker for an unforgettable performance of Russian masterworks. She brings superhuman technique and breathtaking expressivity to Prokofiev’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 3, a piece that has come to emblematize her genius, and his Third, a fiendishly difficult concerto demanding spontaneity and deliberation, playfulness and profundity, lightning dexterity and formidable strength. Argerich makes it look effortless: Her interpretation, polished to gleaming perfection over the decades, feels freer and more essential than ever.

The prodigious Shani, Rotterdam’s youngest-ever chief conductor, is also principal guest conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, whom he leads here in Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances. The great composer’s final work, self-referential and ecclesiastically inspired, is a gorgeous summation of his oeuvre, brimming with bold instrumentation and lush harmonies.

Domingo Hindoyan Conducts Wagner, Chausson & Dvořák—With Sonya Yoncheva

Sensational soprano Sonya Yoncheva and her husband, Domingo Hindoyan, join the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in this dazzling Romantic program. Chausson’s song cycle Poème de l’amour et de la mer, characterized by rich harmonies and lush orchestration, is a reflection on love, the power of nature, and life’s transience. Structured in two parts bridged by an orchestral interlude, it draws inspiration from Maurice Bouchor’s achingly beautiful poems La Fleur des eaux and La Mort de l’amour.

Equally poignant in its melodies and themes is Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, from which the featured Prelude and Liebestod mark the beginning and end of the opera. Richly orchestrated and psychologically profound, it was described by Friedrich Nietzsche as “overpowering in its simple grandeur,” while it elicited “wonder and terror” in composer Giuseppe Verdi. Concluding the program is Dvořák’s sunny Symphony No. 8, the calm after the storm—a joyous, lively, and lyrical composition honoring Bohemian folk music.

Exhibition On Screen— Pissarro: Father of Impressionism

Without Camille Pissarro, there is no Impressionist movement. Born in the West Indies, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris and, by the age of 43, corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. Their first show was scorned by critics, but the group acquired a new name: the Impressionists. For the next 40 years, Pissarro was the driving force behind what has today become the world’s favorite artistic movement.

Rightfully known as “the father of Impressionism,” Pissarro was a dedicated family man, generous with his advice, passionate about experimentation, well-read, socially aware, and an anarchist. He followed a dramatic path, and throughout it all, he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work.

Klaus Mäkelä Conducts Sibelius, Lindberg & Tchaikovsky—With Yuja Wang

Yuja Wang makes every work sound like it was written just for her—and in this case, it really was. Catch her in the French premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s Piano Concerto No. 3, composed to suit her many talents. Critics raved about this concerto, with The Wall Street Journal calling it a “work of formidable technical challenges and winning musical ideas…that must be extraordinarily difficult to play, [but which] Ms. Wang dispatches…with typically preternatural ease.”

She is joined by Klaus Mäkelä and the Orchestre de Paris, who also perform Sibelius’s gorgeous, ghostly Valse Triste and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Symphony No. 6. Perhaps his most beloved symphony, it is an outpouring of powerful emotion that has led to countless autobiographical interpretations since Tchaikovsky died under mysterious circumstances just nine days after its premiere.

James Michael Elia, Artistry by Night

Although a practicing family physician since 1997, James Michael Elia has always had a passion for making art. Grade school projects gave way to more through high school, and in recent years, he’s been teaching himself the creative process as well as taking courses and workshops “by night” at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, Lancaster Museum of Art, and Lancaster Art Association, and with local artist Steve Wilson and acclaimed contemporary artists Tom Lynch and Sterling Edwards.

James considers himself versatile in many mediums—such as graphite/charcoal, pastel, and oil—but is especially drawn to watercolor. He has also begun to promote his photographs as an art medium and has crafted ceramics with local artist Kevin Lehman and blown glass with Michael Peluso. His inspiration comes from his own life experiences, using photos from his vast archive as reference material to create something he hopes will have an emotional impact on the viewer.

Currently a member of the Lancaster Art Association and Lancaster Museum of Art, James has exhibited work at both, as well as at the West Lampeter Community Fair and the Rehoboth Art League in Delaware. His most recent large work, Reflections at the Pinnacle, was commissioned by and installed at the Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center.

Tamara Teets, Acrylics

Tamara Teets is a fine artist and teacher specializing in wildlife and landscape acrylic paintings. She started drawing and painting at a young age and began winning art awards while attending Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lancaster.

At age 38, after working with handicapped adults and children for many years, Tamara decided to go to college to pursue her love of art and earn her BFA. She graduated magna cum laude from the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in 2007. Although she started painting in oils, Tamara fell in love with acrylics in college. She also enjoys drawing in pencil, ink, and colored pencil.

“Over the years my love for nature, hiking, photography, and art have merged into my passion for vibrant, photorealistic paintings of wildlife and landscape that bring my canvas to life with bold colors and lighting,” Tamara says. “My other passion is teaching. I have been teaching art at Willow Valley Communities for almost 16 years and still get excited nurturing new and established artists in my classes. I think every painting I attempt is a learning experience that helps me grow as an artist and teacher.”

Dala Horse Painting Workshop

A Dalecarlian horse, or Dala horse, is a traditional carved, painted wooden statue of a horse originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna (Dalecarlia). Previously used mostly as a toy for children, in modern times it has become a symbol of Dalarna, as well as of Sweden in general. Several types are made, with distinguishing features common to the locality of the site where they are produced. One type in particular, however, has become much more common than others. It is stoutly carved and painted bright red with a harness and other details in white, green, yellow, and blue.

To honor the Nordic Heritage Festival at Chautauqua Hall, paint your own Dala horse, and learn the history of why they are painted the way they are. Be sure to take your horse to the event on June 28 at Chautauqua Hall (see Chautauqua Hall Flyer for full details) to show it off!

Life of the Mind

“The difficulty lies not in grasping the new ideas, but rather in escaping from the old ones.”

— John Maynard Keynes

Socrates Café

“It is better to change an opinion than to persist in a wrong one.”

— Socrates

“Not life, but good life, is to be chiefly valued.”

— Socrates

Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion.

If you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions, even your own, and if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café.

Socrates Café meets in the Cultural Center Education Room on the second Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Registration is not necessary.

Identity

“In the egoic state, your sense of self, your identity, is derived from your thinking mind—in other words, what your mind tells you about yourself: the storyline of you, the memories, the expectations, all the thoughts that go through your head continuously and the emotions that reflect those thoughts. All those things make up your sense of self.” — Eckhart Tolle

How do you feel about your sense of self? Do you understand it as evolving or static?

Monday, August 12

Devotion

“True strength lies in submission which permits one to dedicate his life, through devotion, to something beyond himself.” — Henry Miller

Are there some things in your life now that receive your devotion? How do they make you feel?

NATO’s Future

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has come under increased scrutiny, not because NATO troops are involved in the conflict, but because of its role in relations between Russia and its neighbors. Will expanding membership in NATO protect countries, or will it further provoke Russia?

Invisible Indonesia

Despite its large size, Indonesia remains virtually invisible to most Americans. But as one of the world’s largest democracies, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, and an economic driver of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), why does it fly below the radar? What are current issues in U.S.-Indonesian relations, and what role can the country play in Asia?

A History of Gaming: From Pinball & Monopoly to Minecraft & Wordle

In the 19th century, Milton Bradley created The Checkered Game of Life, launching the board game industry. Meanwhile, an inventor named Montague Redgrave submitted a patent for “Improvements in Bagatelles,” creating the precursor to the modern-day pinball machine. Today, games are everywhere: in your home, at the arcade, and in your pocket!

In this fun class, Professor Howard will examine the history of games, from the first coin-operated amusements to the rise of digital entertainment in the late 20th century. We’ll look at how the 19th century gave us our first true game designers, the Prussian war game that influenced every video game today, and the circus worker who turned the world upside down by creating Atari. Not only will you learn where the games we play come from, but you might just learn something about why we play them in the first place.

Presented by: Robert Howard Purdue University

Robert Howard is Professor of Practice in the Computer Graphics Technology Department at Purdue University, where he teaches game design and game history. Previously, he worked for 21st Century Fox and Disney at Cold Iron Studios and was a designer on hit video games such as Despicable Me: The Game, BioShock Infinite, and Batman: Arkham Origins. A 200 -Year Problem: The Environmental Effects of the Industrial Revolution

Industrialization caused many environmental problems. For more than 200 years, a pall of coal smoke hung over most industrial cities, and toxic dust shortened the lives of miners and mill workers. Rivers that flowed through industrial cities were so polluted that fish could not live in them, and the smell of the Chicago stockyards nauseated generations of residents and visitors.

When citizens’ environmental groups protested these conditions in the 1960s and ’70s, Congress responded by passing clean air and water acts. Industrialists warned that complying would be ruinously expensive, but they were wrong. In the years since, we have enjoyed a combination of better environmental conditions and continued economic growth. Grave environmental problems still confront us, including climate change, but the same ingenuity that led to industrial advances is now leading to inventions that will mitigate the environmental problems they caused.

Inventing Broadcasting: The Early History of Radio

In 1899, 25-year-old Irish Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi sailed to the United States to demonstrate his new method of communication: wireless telegraphy. He proposed to set up his invention on a steamship and, without any connecting wires, relay the progress of the America’s Cup to a receiver in The New York Herald’s offices. On the first day of the race, the front page proclaimed, “Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Triumphs!” A new technology that would revolutionize communications, culture, politics, and the economy was born. By 1922, it was known as radio.

Surrounded by so many communication devices today— especially one right in our pockets—it can be hard to imagine the sheer wonder that greeted wireless telegraphy. In this talk, Susan Douglas relates the hopes, dreams, and fantasies it evoked between 1899 and 1922, laying out how wireless telegraphy became radio, the battles between inventors over developing the device, the role of the Titanic disaster in demonstrating the need for radio regulation, and how the rebellious subculture of “ham” operators was crucial to what became radio broadcasting.

Six Television Shows That Changed the Rules

Americans have been watching TV for nearly a century, and what we see on the screen has changed a lot since the late 1940s. Usually that evolution was gradual, reflecting historical developments in society, politics, and culture. But sometimes the change was radical and sudden, thanks to important individual shows that introduced new possibilities to the medium. In this course, Professor Thompson will examine six pivotal shows that transformed television in ways that can still be seen in the programs we watch today.

Presented by: Robert Thompson

Thompson is Founding Director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture and Trustee Professor at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. The ’ 70 s: Defining the Decade

Inflation? Stagnant economy? Rising energy prices? Embarrassing withdrawal from a foreign war? Battles over abortion and affirmative action? Declining faith in institutions? A general feeling of malaise about the country? Sounds like life in America today, but it actually describes America in the 1970s. No, Americans aren’t wearing bell bottoms or polyester leisure suits today, but many of our contemporary issues sound like the problems the nation faced in the 1970s. Join Professor Vincent Cannato to hear about this pivotal, but sometimes overlooked, decade in American history and learn about how it influenced our current condition…and how it might provide lessons for escaping it.

Meet the Real Vikings!

Despite their cartoon image, the Vikings never wore horned helmets, but they did leave a fascinating cultural legacy to Western civilization. Based in Scandinavia, they supplied mercenaries for the Byzantine court in Constantinople, Viking traders ranged as far east as Baghdad, and hardy adventurers founded Viking settlements as far west as Newfoundland. This program goes beyond myth and legend to paint a colorful picture of the real Vikings: sailors, craftsmen, warriors, and—by the 11th century—converted Christian kings of northern Europe.

Humpback Whales: Fifty Tons of Fun

See why this species of whale is the most popular of all. Meet several grandmothers—and one great-grandmother— and review their family trees. Be amazed by Salt, the first humpback whale to be named, and her first female calf, Thalassa, who had her own calf in 1992. Other whales with unique personalities will also appear: Reggie plays a game with his flipper, Mars likes to blow on people near the railing, Thorn blows almost perfect smoke rings, and Colt sings right beside the boat. Learn how photo identification of individual whales revealed more about the mammals than centuries of whaling.

Tuesday, July 9

Whales: Meet the Great Ones

Now that you learned about humpbacks, meet more baleen whale species. Did you know that blue whales are the largest creatures to ever live on Earth? That fin whales were safe from whalers, as they could swim faster than any ship before steam power? That one northern right whale’s baleen was so valuable it guaranteed an entire voyage’s profits? You’ll also meet many of the toothed whale species. Sperm whales are champion divers who can hold their breath for more than an hour. The extended family groups of white-sided dolphins can include 1,000 members. We’ll also discuss the natural and man-made threats facing whales today.

Tuesday, July 23

Let’s Go Whale Watching

Take a virtual whale watching trip from the historic harbor of Provincetown, Massachusetts, the first landing place for the Pilgrims before they sailed for Plymouth Rock. You will see many species of whales and dolphins, as well as several species of sharks, including one without teeth. You’ll meet pelagic birds, who spend most of their lives at sea, and see them fly onto the boat—one even walks into the wheelhouse. And you’ll witness a baby harbor seal eating fish, a bluefin tuna chasing bluefish, and a mola-mola who weighs 800 pounds. On the trip back, a whale breaches out of the water against a beautiful sunset.

How to Listen to Classical Music

Pre-Webcast Talks

How are we to make any sense of classical music? It comes in so many forms and styles, colors and languages, traditions and nationalities that it can be difficult to understand all its facets.

In these two talks, listeners will be offered ideas on how to listen and what to listen for as they prepare for two corresponding webcasts (pgs. 10, 11). We’ll also consider what messages these symphonies might be trying to convey, and what performance challenges the musicians face. These lectures are intended for everyone, whether or not you plan to attend the webcasts. If you have never attended a webcast, come to one of the sessions and then attend the corresponding webcast. This session is an overview of the important role played by the plants we grow in our gardens, plots, and pots— helping to support the bees, butterflies, and birds we love (and other critters too). You’ll see great photos that will help you to identify common visitors to our garden.

The second part of this session is for learning, fun, and fitness—an optional walking tour (approximately 45 minutes) to some nearby Willow Valley gardens designed to support pollinators. Visit the nearby Mylin House pollinator garden, a SouthPointe Resident’s “Containers for Pollinators” garden, a new SouthPointe demonstration pollinator garden, and our SouthPointe pollinatorfriendly rain gardens. If you are going on the walk, wear a hat and good walking shoes!

What’s New with Willow Valley’s In-House Audiology Services?

A New Name… and New Leadership

Now as a part of Resident Health and Wellness Services under the direction of Pamela K. Bailey, FNP-BC, we are IntegrityForward Hearing Solutions VIA Willow Valley. Our approach and priorities remain the same. We will partner with you for the best and most comfortable care with an emphasis on education. We respect your decisions as a patient. And, we are committed to helping you take advantage of your insurance benefits and to offering competitive prices when insurance is unavailable—or actually more expensive.

A Second Audiologist Has Joined Our Team

We are pleased to introduce audiologist Dr. Kerry Herrmann, who joined our team in December 2023. Dr. Herrmann brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of nearly 17 years in the audiology field working primarily for otolaryngologists. She has a strong background in diagnostic testing and hearing aid fittings, maintenance, and repairs, as well as practice management.

Dr. Heather Eck remains a dedicated part of the IntegrityForward Hearing Solutions team and is pleased to continue offering personalized, patient-centered care.

Heather is a licensed audiologist in Pennsylvania, a fellow of the American Academy of Hearing, and a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

A Second Location on the Lakes Campus

Located in apartment E-300 in the Lakes Community, our practice now has a second fully outfitted office suite to better serve our patients. All types of services are available at this location, including hearing evaluations.

The North Audiology Suite remains our main office location. Find us on the 3rd floor near the bank and Overlook Cafe. Here, you will find Tammy Brown, our exceptional assistant, who schedules appointments for both offices and both doctors.

Join us on a quest for better hearing , better health , and a better life .

If you would like to schedule an appointment for our services— from something as simple as a baseline complimentary screening to having us take over your care or maximize the benefits of your current hearing aids—it starts with a simple phone call to 717.464.6411 for an appointment at either of our locations.
