V18 Monument Competition A design competition launched by the Valletta 2018 Foundation for the design of a monument commemorating Valletta’s European Capital for Culture in 2018. The proposal was carried out in collaboration with local graphic designer Adrian Gauci as his consultant architect and urban designer. The site comprised of an unused patch at the junction between the busy thoroughfare St. Anne Street and Gerolmu Cassar Road which leads to the Auberge de Castille, the house for the Office of the Prime Minister. The sensitivity of the site was attributed to the two nearby monuments, the phallic War Memorial commemorating the fallen during WW2 and the delightful watch tower at the edge of St. James Counter guard.

The proposed design included the excavation of the site in order to immerse the pedestrians below street level, in an attempt to isolate them from the busy street above, whilst still being able to admire the two adjacent monuments. The intervention was to include a mural formed from locally procured limestone, cut to form a blended inscription IZRAHSAD, a maltese term, promulgating the nurturing of talent for the benefit of future generations. The design incorporated a bench that transforms into the mural which, in turn, re-transforms back into another radial bench to eventually integrate itself with the soft landscaping. We are currently awaiting the final results, which will be announced towards the end of February 2014.

City Gate project

Valletta, Malta Project architect obo. CFF Filiberti, Bedonia, Italy 2012 - 2013

Engaged by Italian facade engineers CFF Filiberti, I formed part of the site management team overlooking the construction of the stone-clad facade for Malta’s new parliament building. The design for the project was awarded to Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) and consisteWd of the design for a new parliament building, together with ancilliary offices over what was previously known as Freedom Square. In its latter years, the site was primarily used as a car park. Other works included in the City Gate project include the re-design of the entrance to city gate with improved access to the two cavilliers, St. James and St. John respectively on either side of the gate, and the restoration and reappropriation of the old ruins, which were once the Royal Opera House originally designed by British architect Edward Barry, as an open air performance space.

Valletta, a once thriving capital, witnessed a mass exodus of its inhabitants with the news that the war had broken out in nearby Sicily. Following World War Two, Valletta failed to recover and efforts by subsequent governments to increase the capital’s population consisted of a number of social housing projects, which was counter to the upgrading of Valletta’s reputation. However, in the past 15 years, efforts focused around the rehabilitaion of Valletta as a centre for culture, arts and commerce, have resulted in a number of regeneration projects sprouting up all over its historical grid planned streets. In 2007, works were carried out on a 45 square metre studio apartment which included total re-design of its interiors and building services in accordance with today’s living standards.

Sampusa lane

Tucked away in a winding alley, an old village townhouse was remodelled to accomodate a comtemporary lifestyle. The addition of a floor at roof level, the closing off of the traditional courtyard to unify the ground level into one space and the introduction of varied materials all helped mould the residence into a comfortable living space.

Urban beach

architectural design programme SCE, Parsons New School for Design June 2013 site analysis A four week studio project dealing with spatial analysis, model building and site exploration. It involved the interpretation of volumes as spaces, which were developed into a network of rooms connected by circulation spaces and a series of staircases or bleachers, to finally form a functional pool house. Group work consisted of the analysis of Pier 52 along the Hudson River and the presentation of proposals for an Urban Beach. The master plan included three pool house typologies and a number of pools, varying in dimension and functionality, and the design of public spaces along the Pier.

urban design thesis project University of Malta 2004 - 2005

This project sought to regenerate an industrial area that has been abandoned for a number of years. New urban design solutions were introduced, improving the built environment around this part of the island. Social and Environmental improvements were envisaged, as well as the generation a new form of industry in the area. Blue chip industries, innovation drivers, business start-up incubator projects, and a number of other initiatives currently being promoted by regional governement will be housed within the park.

site analysis

Sustainable building technologies, landscaping, and a low density built up footprint were proposed in order to enhance the working experience for its users, whilst also improving the general environment of its surroundings and re-using a row of disused warehouses, that date back to the 1800’s. The site is located at the inner-most part of Malta’s Grand Harbour, which is a strategic location as it is situated along the main national transport routes.

art & architecture sketches

2013

A series of sketches from 2013 following exploratory studies on themes encompassing architectural typologies, both historical and contemporary, urban landscapes, vehicles in movement and the human anatomy. Mediums used include pencil, charcoal and acrylics. The author believes that sketching is the primary tool of the architect, through which ideas and concepts may be communicated. It is also his belief that a deep understanding of the proportions of the human anatomy is essential for the development of excellent architectural design skills.
