Manufacturing Process
Two shot moulding is used to create the promotional orange and black RAC Ice Scraper Keyring. Location Pin
Top Mould Block
CNC The CNC Machine was used to produce the top mould block, bottom mould block and three of the more complex inserts. Prior to cutting the parts we had to create tooling paths using Creo.
6mm Pin Keyring Insert
The five main proccesses we used during manufacture were: 1) CNC Milling 2) Center Lathe 3) Milling Machine 4) Surface Grinder 5) Brazing 6) Pilar Drill
3mm Pin
Insert 1
Insert 2 Second Shot Insert Insert 3
Lathe The seven pins, including location pins, were turned using a center lathe. These are fundamental parts of the mould tool, as they hold the inserts in place during injection. It was therefore important that they were accurately made, which is why the lathe was used. Milling Most of the inserts were manufactured via manual milling. This was due to the simplicity in the shapes.
Female Groove Insert
Male Groove Insert Widget
Surface Grinder It was vital that the inserts were manufactured to high accuracy, so we used the suface grinder to ensure the correct tolerances were met for all of the necessary inserts. Brazing One insert had to be manufactured in two parts, as a shelf was needed around the edge, which was impossible to create in one go. The parts were then brazed together to ensure there was no flashing during injection and also made it easier to remove from the mould.
Bottom Mould Block
Mass Manufacture For mass manufacture, a radial layout would require the male groove insert to be removed from two sides, which would be difficult and more time consuming.
Shot 1
5 widgets per injection (10 cavities) to produce 3,038,961 widgets
A parallel layout is more viable for our cavity layout as it leaves two sides clear to remove the insert. The bottom block, pins and inserts are removed in one, leaving the widget in the top block to be easily removed.

Material Selection
HDPE has been chosen for the following reasons: Coloured easily - RAC black and orange colour added. High stress, crack resistance - withstands pressure when used as ice scraper. High impact stress - doesn’t shatter when dropped. Cold resistant - performs in cold down to -100°C. High surface release characteristic - easily stick to the mould block.

BRIEF| Research a problem found by myself and design a product that will help to aid this. PROBLEM| August 2016 at Manor Farm Fishery 65 fish died averaging 15lbs per fish, costing roughly ÂŁ20,000 to directly replace. The lake was closed for a month, loosing revenue and bad publicity gained. PROPOSAL| Autonomous dissolved oxygen and temperature sensor that relays information back to the user in real time using their smart phone.

Product Proposal
Scenario of Use
Place charging dock on the lake.
Power product on and place in the lake.
Product docks and charges while the induction charging plate raises the product out the water. Change Navigation
Product moves to positions on the lake ready to take readings.
Damsel Lake
Click to add points
Product lowers probe into the water and takes the dissolved oxygen and temperature at different known depths in the water.
Data is sent to the user in real time, who can easily see trends.
Data informs the user so they can make decisions before anything drastic happens, therefore preventing loss of fish.
Aerators can be placed on the lake in most effective areas as a result of data.
