BARCELONA 2002-2009
Mercabarna has opened the new building for the flower market, an innovative market for flowers, plants and accessory wholesalers. The market aims to become one of the leading markets in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, and a reference for facilities at a European level. The projects mantains the image of a traditional market on the exterior, where the roof turns into the real protagonist, a public architecture icon. The roof configures itself through a combination of folds between floor, walls and roof, dissolving these elements to create entrances, loading areas and restricted areas around the entire perimeter of the building. It’s analogy with shells gives the building an organic character, associated with the activity and movement taking place on the inside. While the roof is the market’s big integrating element, internally three conceptually different markets are located, each one of them with it’s own characteristics, logistics and specific technical conditions, according to the product on sale. Industrial cooling systems, where temperatures must be maintained between 2ºC and 15ºC, passive heating systems with radiant industrial floors, one of Europe’s largest, with more than 4.000m2, passive cooling systems that introduce humidity, maintaining the environment between 15ºC and 26ºC or exhaustive fire prevention and control systems in the dry flower storage area, highly flamable. This subsector was specifically and consciously designed, as a result of the traumatic experiences which took place in the market, when it burned down in 2001. The complex also includes 500 parking spaces, a restaurant, a specialized florist education centre and multi-purpose spaces for events. Finally, the market is framed within a series of singular operations being carried out between Plaza de España and the Airport, with works by Toyo Ito (Fira Barcelona), Richard Rogers (Hesperia Tower) or Ricardo Bofill (Internationa Airport Terminal).

The Saint Petersburg Urban Resort is a perfect example of how to incorporate the structure of a building with it’s sorrounding environment. The building creates reconcilability silhouette at the boundary of the city. The shape of the construction equals an artificial landscape, with its different ondulations where the membrane equals mountains that are able to accrete and accumulate snow, which is omnipresent and representative of the city. Meanwhile the white covered roof shows a contrast to the envolving colours and materials that enclosures the rest of the whole resort complex.

BARCELONA 2002-2009
DREAM CITY, a meeting point for VIP customers, in search of the rare and exclusive product, a truly unique oasis in the past of the world. A major project of the Western Northern zone, near Montecristi, city where time seems to have stopped, solidifying the wooden houses and its inhabitants in an “offbeat” environment, appearing far from modern concerns. DREAM CITY is characterized by the exceptional natural quality of the site, surrounded by remarkable and unique ecological specificities in the Dominican Republic: a hot and dry climate, a particular vegetation, a characteristic fauna and flora, an incredible ecological purity. This most unique place in the Caribbean will be reminiscent of Porto Cervo (Sardinia) or of St Bartholomew, with privacy and security still unknown in the Dominican Republic. DREAM CITY will offer to VIP customers, products and services making the project one of the world’s market leaders. DREAM CITY, is firstly a unique site through its situation, its dimension, its beauty and through the variety of its landscape. The white sand beaches extend as far as the eye can see, the rock cliffs slope into the ocean, and the corals animate the crystalline water. After unforgettable sunsets, enjoy the soft embracing coolness of the nights… Here, everything contributes to the slenderness of the views and the wakening of the senses…

DREAM CITY PUNT VERD MERCABANA
CASINO TOWER The Casino tower concerns an essential item in the seaside skyline, in which the intention to represent anunderwater world on earth is reflected. It’s height allows an important green sorrounding area that will provide a luxurious and free aspect and an enviromental wild quality. The tower reconfigures itself depending the identity of the hosted uses, being splited or joined due to the surface needs. The program hosted in the complex consists in the Condominium Tower Hotel with more than a thousand beds, a convention center, meeting rooms, and ball rooms for weddings and feasts. Besides that, also a VIP spa, luxurious shops, hairdressers, fitness, piano bars and restaurants offers an extra value. The casino tower is places in the center or the whole project site, close to the village, the marina and the great white sand beach. It’s also a massive node inside the communication axis. The project area offers alternative services that make sure that it’s possible to have a high occupation rate all year long, avoiding the temporality that holiday tourism usually represents, by focusing on the sector of conventions and events and as a second residence combination. Holding a dual property title, will set the chance to rent your apartment/room while you are not using it, offering an extra money income to the owner and a chance of new business with low mantainance costs to the hotel administration. The possibility of living with local people would be an attractor to possible visitors, giving an extra value, rare and exhotic, not seen in any previous turistic resort.

BARCELONA 2002-2009
Punt Verd is the most important building in Mercabarna’s New Integral Plan for Recycling Waste. For the first time in the recycling plant’s context, the two different waste types, organic and inorganic, are combined into one loading unloading area, so that the truck’s movements are rationalized. The whole structure was thought as the reflected movement of the circuit that the different materials carry out, from the dispersion to concentration of inorganic materials, from the solid to liquid state of organic ones, and more recently, the classified repartition for new cycles. The shape of the folds, which consists of two big elements that cover the loading area, emulate and suggest the activity of the recycling plant in syncopated ascending and descending movements, opening spaces or turning into a single piece, curved and soft: sliding, poured or liquid. The structure is less evident: the big porch of the loading platform hides the real structural frame in the center of the building, held by huge pairs of pillars, distributing the structure in volumes and voids accordingly to the two different types of wastes: organic in the volumes, lodged in a hopper, and inorganic in the voids, from which they are unloaded towards the transporting strips. The skeleton which functions with a 6.5m cantilever on one side and one of 4.5 m on the other, is covered with metallic sheets on the outside and with plaster and polycarbonate plates on the inside, which intentionally turn the building into a graphical composition of green and silver colours as well as white letters. The curves of the building are converted into logotypes for the related activity, and into inverted power lines which echo the purpose of the installation: to reverse the tendency in recycling in order to reach the newly established standard of 70%. Finally, a pattern has been applied to the surrounding walls and urban elements of the construction. The control area emerges regardless the pact.

BARCELONA 2002-2009
Not long ago, Barcelona’s central fruit and vegetable market suffered from chronic overcrowding. An unremitting increase in trade and need for new services meant that market activities had outgrown the warehouse spaces they occupied. Officials realized that if they couldn’t find a solution, their only alternative was to relocate MercaBarna. A curious example of industrial architecture, the building is an exact copy of the pavilion that the Shah of Iran built for his coronation three decades ago. The roof has an autonomous, projecting structure, with tensile masts that leave the floor below, completely free of columns. Markets officials came up with the idea of building a suspended footbridge across the central hall - a structure that would present an alternative circulation route and ease congestion. A sufficiently wide bridge could also accommodate a much-needed restaurant, a cafeteria. From the perspective of design, the brief asked for a restaurant with an abundance of light, an interesting view of activities in the hall below and a large enough seating capacity to satisfy the potential growth of the marketplace. The finished product covers aprox. 300 m2 and sits 800 customers. Aesthetically, the restaurant is a rather simple green glass box, but structurally it is far more complex. The scheme relies heavily on coloured glass and, given the propensity of a bridge to flex slightly, a sketelon of lightweight aluminum. To maintain the equilibrium, we carefully calculated the weight factor of each individual element (the restaurant can survive a minor earthquake undamaged). The ceiling is an opaque glass membrane and the floor a collage of recycled glass blocks. The rest of the furniture is portable and lightweight. The artificial lighting used is geared to the time of the day. The kitchen, a closed volume of matte glass at the rear of the restaurant, gives the building it’s only opaque façade, a feature that conveniently conceals mechanical systems.

Our building is a pile system structure with minimum floor occupation. The entire structure behaves like a mushroom in a rural area: minimum occupation, minimum impact, maximum efficiency. Each floor organizes its spaces around the central circulation tube, therefore freeing up the boundaries. The skin folds itself along the shape of the different surfaces to acquire spaces, climates, textures and activities: from the green surfaces to the photovoltaic plates, from climatic diaphragms to allotment-balconies. The core organizes the whole circulation system of people as well as the waste system. We intend to create a building which recycles from the beginning, in which each occupier will take part in the recycling process. The programme combines flats with a recycling plant and a supermarket, deforming each floor to allocate the different uses: expanding the supermarket on the square, connecting the street to the recycling plant and piling up the flats on a parallel line to the folds of the faรงades. The building is an Acacia: an organic model but organized vertically, in the middle of the orange anarchists. The allotment: can it be an Eden?

Sociopolis Masterplan was developed by Vicente Guallart Architects during 2002 as a living ecotone, is still alive and adapting. The question to be answered was simple: considering we live in the age of knowledge, and considering that in order to act the world has to invest in research, should we not devote part of our production of public housing to researching and developing new kinds of buildings that respond to our presentneeds and prefigure future situations?
SOCIOPOLIS
This elementary question has been formulated dozens of times, but only very rarely has there been sufficient cultural and political support for the response to be affirmative. In Valencia it was decided to take the Biennial of the Arts as an opportunity for generating a project that would provide a basis for this universal reflection.

Sociopolis is a project supported by the Generalitat Valenciana for the construction of a new model of an affordable social housing scheme, following modern research traditions and proposing new living environments that respond to society’s contemporary requests. The project promotes the construction of social housing responding to the new family units needs both in ownership and lease, in a quality urban environment where green areas and equipments
enhance social interaction and quality architecture boosts urban excellence. Sociopolis was exhibited in Valencia Biennale 2003, with the collaboration of thirteen internationally known architects. A new urban development model was proposed, where housing, multi-function equipments were integrated into an agricultural environment, following the mediterranean “hortulus” model.

Buildings that represent social groups, religions or specific moments in human history should be seen from a typological point of view –and not only aesthetical- different from already defined typologies which are functionally concrete and abstract, as seen in banks and large corporation office towers that are populating the skyline of every important city today. These buildings should be capable of becoming global and international icons, and at the same time objects of an extraordinary beauty. In this terms we think that the O.I.C Headquarters building, would, could and should be a singular project, not only for the place where it stands, but for the people that it represents around the world. The Cupola is seen as a visible and powerful icon from the vast and rich culture and history of Islamic architecture, appearing for a long time in very different parts of the world but always under the same common identity. An architectural element that has always been reason for defiant construction solutions, technological and scientific breakthroughs, throughout human history. The final shape, slightly asymmetric or in movement, the oval plaza and the “towers” that conforms it, the general “Orbits” that this project proposes, suggests an actual vision of this ancient culture, proud and alive, that demands its place and part in our modern globalized world. Jeddah has successfully combined the dignity and traditions of the past with the dynamics of the modern world. It is also the most important port and the entrance door of the pilgrimage. This building should also be a perdurable and timeless icon of that identity: “port and door”, a place to pass through, learning the historical background and at the same time building the present.

To construct a monumental Cupola, where the 5 “pillars” that support it transform into buildings themselves. It will be a new technical challenge, that not only summarizes a functional program with a formal reference, but will be a demonstration of vanguard with tradition, of risk and faith, and singular ideas against a globalized understanding, simultaneously.
OIC - ORGANIZATION OF THE ISLAMIC CONFERENCE
The shape of the building is a meditated typological decision. Each one of its “limbs”, represented in an orbital ring that like any alliance symbolizes the union of Muslim nations under one common cupola, define the functional and inside spaces. Even more important that the building itself is the monumental plaza, confining and opening like a gateway the sense and purpose of the project, and a great

covered Garden, ancestral and renewed at the same time, a place of contemplation where we can see the city, the sea and the mountains. The presence of this building is reinforced by the abstract image of its structural skin made by steel, glass and concrete, in contrast with mirror of water that multiply the visual, formal and aesthetical
aspects, and by the subtleness of the interior garden that behind a structural mesh, embraces a delicate and peaceful space where the most important buildings of the program are located: The Plenary Hall and the Secretary General, in accordance with the character that those two entities should evoque: Leadership and Popular Representation.

BARCELONA 2002-2009
The main reflection we must be aware of while analizing cities by the sea is that, during previous centuries the ports were the origin of those cities. Some of them developed into big cities because of that, and then, kept on developing in order to be able to compete against other cities and still stand as big cities. The ports, meanwhile, due to their oversizement, became places of low interest due to their proximity to those large cities which they contributed to create. And the cities started a slow regerenation process along their waterfronts as a revitalization strategy. What would happen if the port idea definition guides us to other conclusions? Could we nowadays dare to think that the port is not a continental platform, but a maritime platform? And that the ships should not come to us, but we come to the ships? This concept would create a new idea about how to take advantage of the docks, recycle the buildings, occupy and create new infrastructures: We have to redefine a new future for that, a new ambitious plan. 1@CREUER A matter of industrial recycling, to reconvert old structures with new containers, the opportunity to an European Research Center for Renewable Energies. An area used for knowledge, experimentation, design and fabrication for a new business related to sea, sustainability and technologies. To work with the recycling concept, proposing a building as an icon of that movement. A symbiosis between Factory and housing.
1@ICTINEA A singular and diferent piece is proposed, with a ludic charm, a space design to enjoy the sea and the port at the same time, a demonstration of the upcoming XXI century architecture, selfsufficient, didactic and sustainable. Barcelona will have to make up positions in creativity and innovation. 2012 is the 150th anniversary of Monturiol’s Ictinea. A massive mediterranea balcony, a ludic image as an alternative to the beach, beting on elegance in a high-value site.
1@TMED The new Mediterranean ship terminal. We propose to move BaleĂ ria and Transmediterranea Terminals here, creating a terminal hub, offering services to all international east terminals and connecting them with the city. We consider to maintain the old structures and connecting them with a new building, making passenger logistics easier and adding new support uses.

The new Barcelona library must take the unique chance and opportunity given by its privileged urban location: As the most important Mediterranean libraries, and it’s vocation of looking towards the sea. Opening itself and showing off to visitors coming from overseas as well as local users. The main objective of the proposal is to develop the functional program inside a stepped container, creating balconies and terraces, both interior and exterior, where we are able to look towards the park, the city and the sea. To offer open public spaces above closed public uses. Thereby, we understand that building as a sloped prism, symbolically sunken on the plot, as an archeology tool that discovers new city interpretations, not only of its past history but observing the future from a recovered horizon: the Mediterranean sea. To take advantage of its urban location to create a big amphitheater: an unexpected opportunity for Ciutadella park to have a new sloped public space carpet looking towards the sea. To solve though an inclined building the porch continuity coming from Picasso Avenue along the park, placing the library main entrance in its ending point. That entrance, with a protective descending scale will grant urban scale to Passeig Argenteria. To introduce standalone programs (children’s program, a restaurant in the roof with an independent access from level zero, an auditorium for presentations, reading rooms and so...) in order to create certain use intensity in the main floor, independent from library uses, contributing with a crossing passage that will minimize paths from side to side and introduces the park to the interior space, creating a hall between Estació de França and the library, focused in expositions and shows. To revalue the ruins, exposing them as an open air museum, covered and lightened with the proposed building. To reduce the impact on the existing Estació de França’s façade, which partially maintains the existing views and gains new views towards the new terraces.

BARCELONA 2002-2009
We are talking about a privileged site in Costa Brava, more specifically in Calonge, a site with strong slopes and amazing views towards the sea in Palamós Bay, surrounded by a pine forest. The house, a family house is around 450 square meters big and is to be a summer house. The program is divided in three levels, according each section point, ground floor with shared day spaces and first floor with bedrooms that deform themselves in order to adapt the building to the sharp site slopes. That asymmetric movement allows hosting on the roof the third level which contains the studio and the panoramic terrace. Basically, the house is a section, dealing between regulations and natural slopes, establishing a draw between open and closed areas, between glass openings and concrete walls, with the explicit will to exaggerate the created offset in between levels and inner continuity. In the other hand, the house has to respond to a summer house functionality, simple and diaphanous, not only in uses but also in views, and assuming certain informality with interior and exterior uses, moreover being easy maintainable with non sophisticated spaces. The project develops starting from a structural concrete envelope with flows along an established path tour through the house, staying, passing by, getting to one place to another, gazing at the amazing Costa Brava sea sights. Each face of the house has one “leg” touching the ground, which is big if compared with the plan, but not that big if compared with the elevation. We thought its performance as a rotational direction, turning around to go from a place to another, or to turn around the same direction as the stair do: to provoke visual paths which lengthens in time and space the house possibilities: contradictory in its sensations, as heavy and light a the same time, a white elephant standing in one foot, as Botero’s paintings do.

The big voids and glasses lightens the mass, against one unique and monolithic heavy element. It’s really interesting to see how does the small feet idea work in a big body. The Colombian artist Fernando Botero represented those obese figures with small feet and hands, contributing with a lightness fresh air, that even though their obeseness they could fly, dance and spin around. We loved that reference to express some ideas coming out of that small object. The linking stairs fold along the space boundaries and transform onto diagonal elements which flow along the envelope, marking as a sculpture double or triple high spaces, mainly they’re turning around the house in order to show all spaces from the angle we wanted them to be observed. In that sense, more “Corbusier-
like” stairs are our eyes, architect eyes floating in its idea. Ground floor interior spaces are thought as an exterior and garden extensions, massive glassed surfaces, covered porches, transition spaces etc... in order to grant a fluent use of the house during summer. We like and prefer to think that inside and outside are the same think, with different climates. The most technically interesting topic in that house, was the external concrete shell construction at once, in order to avoid the joints problem when arriving to each slab. The shell was constructed with a thirty centimeters bearing wall, non stopping pouring concrete during several days...and nights. The slabs were poured after the house façades, and joined with metallic pins. 235

BARCELONA 2002-2009
The building is a result of the integration of PREINDUSTRIALIZIED MODULES, both across and lengthwise, already imposed from the beginning into the project, and the dimensions are stipulated by this modulation. There has been searched the MAXIMUM STANDARTIZATION of the project’s elements. However, although the prefabricated modules were taken, there has been searched, with collocation of these modules in DECALAGE, a singularity of this school. The composition quality comes from the richness of the double heights of the circulation spaces. The resulting building is of rectangular shape. The school is organized by collocation of the infantile program on the ground floor and splitting that of the primary school between the first and the second floors. The infantile classrooms have their own exterior zone. It is a compact building that is integrated better into its CONTEXT as the extension of the yet existing school took place in this case. The construction is completed within only 3 MONTHS, in a time when the school is closed for holidays. The school is oriented towards North-South. The priority was to orient the classrooms towards the South. They are protected with lames and dispose of the crossed ventilation. We orient toward the North the block of installation, teacher’s rooms, the classrooms for the small groups and the audiovisual room and that of informatics. That’s to say, the rooms where not so much time is spent. Besides that, the classrooms dispose of the CROSSED VENTILATION, and the access to them from central places has ventilation via chimney flue.
