01 RIVER COTTAGES REVISION CHICAGO,IL (RESIDENTIAL)

M.ARCH GRADUATE THESIS MAY 2017 This project revisions the River Cottages designed by Harry Weese. While the original project aims to celebrate its context and create a new way of urban waterfront living, the main goal of this interpretations to elevate such recognitions to its site and at the meanwhile, to challenge the possibility of a more diverse spectrum of waterfront lifestyle in a metropolitan setting. By treating the slanted facades from the existing structure as opportunities to accommodate a new system of “landscaping” using parts from the original structure, the design creates a building that gives birth of a secondary “site” for a new architecture layer to sit on top. By using the arches and having them following the slope of the origial structure, a strong gesture of reaching out to the water is demonstrated, which, as the origianl architect would like to archive, largely strengthens the relationship between architecture and its context. The individual units are united as larger communal living spaces with more diverse programs to provide more choices in lifestyles, and brings architecture back to its social and cultural roles.

River Cottages is a townhouse complex designed for the bank of the Chicago River, made up with four downtown attached single-family dwellings facing east towards Wolf Point. The design is often refered as nautical with the references throughout the building such as portholes, decks and abundance of triangles that allude to the sails of boats. The east(back)- facade and the west(front) elevation are treated differently for their context of the river and the street. Weese’s inspiration for the cottages came from a trip he took down the Danube River in Hungary thirty years prior to their completion in 1988. There he had seen a collection of unique cottages where people were able to build whatever they wanted with minimal government interference. Weese took that memory and adapted it to the Chicago River as a great example of contextual architecture.



TRANSFORMATION The “slope” shaped by its original slanted facades and floor plates gives opportunities for a new “site” on top of a building itself. Adding arches as a primary layer of the new architecture formation provides the “site” for new structure to sit on top. The horizontality and continuaty of arches allows parellal interactions to happen throughout the architecural spaces. The tiers of arches reaching down following the slope also gives an intuitive representation of the relationship between architecture and its context.

Arches are introduced on top of the original structures, their openings are assigned to correspond to the programs and circulations, as well as a visual guidence while people moving through the building. New living volumes are placed on top and in beween the arches, they tiely follows the geometry of the arches to create intriguing space for both exterior representation and interior uses.

02 LAR GREEN TECHNOLOGY PARK (URBAN) LOS ANGELES,CA

M.ARCH DESIGN STUDIO DEC 2016 An urban project that explores the idea of “modern utopia� with its own interpretation of the subject.The proposal aims to solve the problem for the lacking of urban activities in traditional industrial zones and the long unoccupied hours of space and lands after regular working hours. The design seeks ways to transform such urban condition into a 24-hour coummity that is shared and occupied by a different user groups. By introducing green technology conduction, the traditional industrial activities are replced with a smarter and cleaner way of manufacturing. Because of the flexibility and adaptibility of green-tech industry, this design launches a brand new public-fridenly industrial zone.


CREATING A 24-HOUR COMMUNITY

truck turn-overs for factory spaces are inserted into the main assigned volume, with day & night prorgams to make sure the maximum occupancy for both live & work situations.

parlkings are located at the outer raneg of the parking to encourage bikability & walkability.

major green landscaping are introduced to the park, providing recreational space & biodiversity.

The scheme replaced high-density traditional industrial infrastures with smarter and cleaner green-tech industrial campus by reshaping the entire neighborhood. The main factory volumes are divded and embedded with sections of different programs and functional areas to provide a higher livability and spontaneity for the work-live community, more importantly, to activate all parts of the community throughtout different time of the day.

By infilltrating through the major structure, the spontaneity of the interactions between and the user activities brings a lot more possibility to this community than the traditional industrial areas.

03 USC WRIGLEY MARINE SCIENCE CENTER CATALINA ISLAND, CA (INSTITUTIONAL) M.ARCH DESIGN STUDIO DEC 2015DESIGN STUDIO M.ARCH DEC 2015

The projec visions a new institue building for the USC Wrigley Marine Science center in Catalina Island. The mai goals of this design is to connect activities and movements on the site, which includes movements from manmade infrastructures to natural elements, from researching activities in labs to discovering under the water. Connections between manmade and nature create routes which demonstrate the force flows of activities. This new building serve as a connector that captures these flows and transform them into visual and spatial representation. Meanwhile, the architecture follows the landscape while setting up another layer in beween the eixisiting and the new structures, given the force by the landscape, the architecture reflect itself back to its contents while trying to blur the boundary of inside and outside without losing both identites.


BUILDING SYNTAX The offsetting volumes create in-between space that provides public uses. The terraces are treated as the reflection of the geometry, at the same time, creating a dialogue beween the nature and the built.

INSIDE VS OUTSIDE By shifting and pushing planes of each volume, folded-facet skin with large openings are introduced, overhangs and extension shifting to the outdoor space are also brought by such gestures. The use of vertical rods helps to maintain the continuaty of geometries while alongside with curtain walls.

04 BROADWAY ART GALLERY LOS ANEGLES, CA (CULTURAL)

M.ARCH DESIGN STUDIO MAY 2016 Located in Downtown Los Angeles, Broadway Art Gallery provides a dynamic experience for art viewing. Forming by interlocking volumes, the main gallery gives audiences great oppotunities for exploring arts within different settings and contexts. The walkway above the ring galler allows audiences to perceed the intriging in-between space in a direct and daring way. The facade/wrapper surface is penetrated through and pushed by the inner volume to represent the connection between inner contents and outer reactions. Perforated-framed paneling with parametric pattern is used to manipulate the sunlihgh throughout the day, also gives a synesthesia presentation alongside the to visiting experience for the gallery space.

Buildable Area & Chosen Site SITE ANALYSIS The site sits in a valley topography in between mountain ranges, existing conditions scatter along the gully forming a linear rural aggregation.By analysing the buildable areas, the team chose the north-west side of the existing condition for constructing the new village for a easier accessibility to water source and water collection. The new structures will connect and merge with the existing condition to enable resources sharing and social diversity.

River-tail Village expresses ideas and solutions for net-zero villages as a part of new chinese rural-urbanism development. Situated in a rural region of Northern China, the formation of the hillside agri-village is primarily driven by the need of efficient and smart way of utilizing water which will be obatian from local resources and rainwater to enable a self-sustain system for living and agriculture. The housing aggregation is formed with consideration of the specific topography of its site and the social and cultural diversity it could provide that meets the needs of different lifestyles while providing commual and private agriculture programs.
