The Aluminum Cabin
Architects JVA Location Vestfold, Norway
JVA+ Arkiteker MNAL
Lead Architects Einar Jarmund, Håkon Vigsnæs, Alessandra Kosberg, Ane Sønderaal Tolfsen
Site Area 90.0 sqm Project Year 2013 Located in an amazing archipelago, The Aluminum Cabin is made from a worn-out cabin that was located on the site. The area’s building code and its obstructions have formed the cabin’s size and form, as well as an enhanced the adaption to the landscape. The plan is divided in two by the roof ridge. One side is subdivided into bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen , while the other side is one large living room. The cabin consists of three interconnected volumes where three outdoor spaces is created. It is located between two rocks which makes the cabin appear low in the terrain. The cabin is built with seawater resistant aluminum and has folding doors that make two of the facades completely open towards the surroundings. The aluminum façade plays along with the shifting daylight and appears altered in its expression during the day.

Bed One Block Hostel A MILLIMETRE
After the completion of Bed Station Hostel in 2014, A MILLIMETRE work on their new project that will be a typical one-block-shophouse with a unit of 4m. width by 16m. depth, and will be name Bed One Block Hostel. To design a hostel, a space for guests’ social interaction plays major role. The common area was designed to have a staircase that connects the ground floor to the intermediate floor above, where everyone can meet up or use as a place to relax. The exterior which greets all pedestrians had a buffer to hide the house facilities, such as air conditioning and other systems. A distinct pattern for the facade was intended to relate with Thai-element. White perforated steel sheets with various hole sizes were arranged diagonally which created contrast to the adjacent blocks. A welcoming and friendly service might not be enough to make a good hostel, but with a good design to support guests’ behavior can make it a great one.

Right in the heart of the Landes region of France, this hotel installation interacts with a landscaped tableau The first stage of the project consists in transforming the existing lake into a landscape of dunes crowned with slender pines. Built with wood, these are characterized by a arrangement which favors openings onto the lake while conserving the privacy of the occupants. Placed over the water that mirrors them, these small, autonomous units are a point in the landscape and allow nature to form a continuous milieu. The harmony between the constructions and the environment is not built on imitation, but defined by a contrasting homology. Different pathways snake between the hills and, through the variety of perspectives on offer on the site, this feeling is confirmed.

FLOW Hostel occupies the second floor of a more than hundred-year-old downtown historic building in Budapest. This hostel consist of 98 beds for young tourists traveling on a budget. In addition to rooms with capacities of four to eight people, a chain of communal areas was designed comprising of an entrance hall including the reception, a lounge, a canteen with self-service kitchen and a media area. The building has a longitudinal layout with a load-bearing wall in the middle dividing the floor plan into two tracts, that are further divided by walls perpendicular to the facade. These walls had created a chain of interconnected generous spaces called emphilade. With the homogeneous linoleum flooring, the uniformly white walls and the arrangement of cable trays below the ceiling for the various mechanic systems and other permanent elements that is easy to adapt. Each public area was given a unique character through the design of furniture and other easily changeable elements of the interior custom designed by us.

The strategy for the intervention was to keep the original support walls from the old building much as possible, and extend one extra floor in the roof. To archive this, they used a structural light steel framework system for part of the first floor and for new second floor. The original space distribution revealed a simple frame organization along a corridor that crossed the building in half. This organization grid was kept in both original floors. The materials chosen reflect cost-efficient strategy where only three materials cover all finishing surfaces. In the ground floor the common areas; reception, common kitchen; lounge area and a bar. The first floor holds the mixed dorms with shared bathrooms; and in the second floor holds the double rooms with private bathrooms.

Historically, the Parisian urban fabric has been characterized by its' deep vertical interior courtyards which provided light and ventilation to the buildings. However, this solution was rejected by the building standards The first thought for the new improvement was to build a compact building not too far from the idea of the geometric simplicity of the surrounding buildings, while at the same time enriching it with an energetic constructive expression using modern materials and techniques. One of the aims of this project is to allow natural light and fresh air) into the horizontal circulations spaces, this is thanks to the judiciously distributed openings. The higher floors are placed on top of these three blocks which constitute the ground floor. They are broken down into two programmatic super-imposed stratums. On the structural plan, this shift is eased by the floors which transfer the charges. The external plan, a transparent veil of corrugated stainless steel sheets interrupts the regularity of the facades giving a feeling of lightness and depth.

Jim Olson Cabin
Architects Olson Kundig Location Longbranch, USA
Olson Kundig Architects
Lead Architects Jim Olson Eileen, Fisher Contractor, Tom Harris, Mark Ambler, MCE, Structural Consultants
Site Area 111.5 sqm Project Year 1959
What began as a 14-foot-square bunk house built in 1959 has morphed through subsequent remodels in 1981, 1997, 2003 and 2014 into a modest livable weekend retreat. Each successive addition and remodel has reused and integrated the previous structure rather than erasing it to reveal the cabin's architectural history. At the age of eighteen, Olson began work on a bunkhouse for his family in Longbranch and has continued to expand the small structure into both a private retreat and a touch point for his work worldwide. Simple, readily available materials are used throughout: wood-framed walls are sheathed in plywood both inside and out; doubled pairs of steel columns support. The rooms themselves are essentially a set of boxes set underneath a unifying roof; together, they create a single form that projects out over the landscape.

The cottage holds a special place in contemporary Norwegian culture because of it’s modestly sized and a sustainable structure both in terms of material usage and energy consumption. The building sits amidst marshland, sea-adjacent..The consideration in the project was to avoid interfering with this sensitive surrounding terrain. It heals slowly due to climatic factors. The cottage lies 21 meters above sea level, and the distance to the sea front is 100 meters. Some marsh had to be cleared in preparing for the building phase, exposing bedrock and thus aiding in integrating the cottage with the terrain. The exterior of the building is clad in spruce harvested .This untreated material fades rapidly, attaining a light and silvery shimmering hue. The outside detail is kept to a minimum to ensure an even patina for the walls.

Linear House Patkau Architects
Linear House is located on a sixteen acre farm on Salt Spring Island. The new house slips into the narrow space between the line of fir trees to the north and orchard to the south The full extent of the house is never directly experienced from the exterior. That experience is of a dark stealth-like figure sliding in and out behind the screens of trees on either side. At a parting of the trees on either side the length of the house is subdivided into a principal dwelling and guest quarters by a breezeway. The exterior rain screen of the house is clad in charcoal-colored fibre-cement panels which render the house almost invisible when seen against the dark green foliage. The Interior is luminous inner lining made of translucent acrylic panels. Areas within this overall luminous surround are subdivided and defined by the insertion of reinforced concrete.

The isolated mountain location mandates the greatest possible self-sufficiency. The ambivalence between a sense of security and being exposed defines the building’s structure: below are the communal areas with surrounding ribbon glazing, above the closed sleeping quarters. The cascading spiral stairway opens panorama views when ascending, follows the course of the sun, captures the solar irradiation, and distributes the warmth of the sun throughout the entire house. The Native Hostel, Bar & Kitchen is a boutique hostel, bar, cafe, and event space designed for the epicurean traveler and locals alike. It is nestled in an existing 2-story late 1800’s stone building and a mid-century brick warehouse right in the middle of the upcoming transit-oriented development adjacent to downtown. By merging all periods and styles, they were able to create something that feels timeless; a place that could have been relevant many years ago is relevant today and will be relevant for many years to come. With utilized a rich palette and textured materials, a theme aptly referred to throughout the design process as ‘dark and stormy’.The result is a truly unique communal experience that offers affordable rates with impeccable style at the nexus of development in Austin.

The architectural challenge for Atelier LAVIT was to create a functional and comfortable hotel room, being faithful to the first inspiration of a bird-nest. Meeting point between poetry and carpentry mastery, the tree house discreetly stands out among the centenarian oaks of the Château de Raray forest, as if it had always been part of the scenery. It integrates and completes an already impressive landscape, sublimating it by offering a shelter. The octagonal plan organizes the space around the oak trunk, incorporating it into the inhabited volume as the protagonist of the space that is the entrance to the tree house. Around the patio the living spaces develop in succession; from the entrance to the living area and the sleeping area, till a narrow corridor with three sliding doors that give access respectively to accommodation rooms.

This Polycarbonate Cabin is a small house for rent, just beside another bigger house for holydays in the coast of Guanaqueros village. The owner lives on renting this two houses for people that are left outside the main beach resorts of the country. It’s a small scale personal enterprise to offer a place to stay and enjoy the beach, so in the beginning there was a very tight budget to build, so in that case they tried again working with low tech design, working with just one carpenter, with the techniques he knew, assimilating all this conditions in the beginning of the design process. The polycarbonate cabin gets its name from having a long polycarbonate wall on the setting sun side. This white wall can reflect light and be translucent. As was told before, this little cabin is located in a site that has already a house. Being so close to each other, this polycarbonate wall gives light both the inside of the cabin, and the walkway between the houses. The structural system is done with standard boards of raw pine wood. All the house was built just by one craftsmen within 2 months.

The building features 4 sharp and asymmetric gabels, reminiscent of a mountain panorama. It stands out and departs from the traditional local architecture, while simultaneously defining it for our times. Apart from exposed concrete, wood is the key player. With a clean design, without the traditional playful elements that are characteristic of the Upper Bavarian alpine building style. The only concession are ornaments of rough sawn spruce, that extend vertically along the hotel’s dark grey south façade. These tastefully continue the carvings eminent in the old villa, which has been respectfully renovated and connected to the quartier. The lodges are connected with an arcade adorned with akebia, and takes on the traditional Alpine hut.

Site Area 18.6 sqm Project Year 2008 The Rolling Huts are several steps above camping, while remaining low-tech and low-impact in their design. The huts sit lightly on the site, a flood plain meadow in an alpine river valley. The construction of each hut is simple. It is, in essence, an offset, steel clad box on a steel and wood platform. Walls are topped by clerestory windows, over which a sips panel roof floats in an inverted, lopsided V. At the north end of the hut, a double-paned sliding glass door opens to the outside. Living occurs not only in the 200 square feet inside the box, but on the 240 square feet of covered deck space surrounding it. Interior finishes are simple, inexpensive, and left as raw as possible. Exteriors are durable, with materials like steel, plywood and car-decking. The huts are grouped as a heard, while each is sited towards a view of the mountains, their proximity unites them.

Signal Shed Ryan Lingard Design
The Signal Shed is located within walking distance of the Eagle Cap Wilderness Preserve in Northeastern Oregon and acts as a short-term residence and outdoor adventure outpost. In an effort to respect these natural surroundings, the Signal Shed was conceived as a small home, which provides access to the outdoors and causes minimal disturbance in doing so. For its foundation, the structure was built on a series of pier footings. The blackened rain screen cladding helps it recede into the shadows of the surrounding mountains and trees. Also, the shed’s ‘charcoaled’ exterior references the burned trees found on site and recalls the past use of Signal Mountain as a smoke signal point for the Nez Perce tribe. The Signal Shed can be closed and fully secured when left for long stretches of time.

The Tent House was an experimental project designed to challenge the expectations of what a weekend house may be. It is not tiny but it is compact and very liveable The house comprises of 70sqm of floor space including the mezzanine sleeping area, there is compromised floor space due to the compounding angles running to the point. There is one bedroom, one bathroom, a fully functioning kitchen with the rest of the space being open plan or some what of a gallery for the living. The front deck has been designed to 'fan out' giving the illusion of a 'shadow' cast by the structure. The tent house has been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival in Berlin 2017.

UNPLAN Kagurazaka is a newly opened hostel, built to accommodate various guests such as international backpackers and domestic business travelers. The hostel houses 78 bunker styled beds and three fully enclosed rooms along with an open lounge and other supporting functions. As the sole tenant of this new three-story building, our aim was to simply insert elements for accommodation in furniture form into a rather banal looking building. As the result, the faรงade with a large glass opening is characterized with a series of cubic wood bunk beds facing the street The design intention of these bunk beds was to create a minimal yet comfortable and private environment for guests. While natural light and views to the streets are provided, each guest is able to control the level of privacy by using the curtain of each unit. Each bed is also equipped with a headboard containing a security box, a lighting fixture for both direct and ambient lightings, and an electrical outlet. The hostel wants to become a place for encounters between the travelers.

Location Vashon Island, Washington, USA
Lead Architects Swenson Say Faget
Project Year 2009
Vashon consists of the remodel of an existing one story cabin with a daylight basement. Given a program calling for additional floor area, the design concept evolved into making a small addition, replacing a previous exterior deck. The addition is a wood box "insertion" which extends into the main structure; it slides in over the existing floor structure and cantilevers out over existing basement walls, thus not affecting the existing drain field. The wood box contains the master bedroom, bath and kitchen. The exterior form and finish of the box continues into the interior; clerestory windows separate the box from the main structure's shed roof above. Aluminum clad wood window walls provide for extensive glazing on the main floor. Large sliding doors open onto a rebuilt wood deck to the west and expanding the interior outside for entertaining.

Writer's Retreat Architectare
The shape of the construction was defined by the small build able area on the lot. This configuration enables a cozy and protected interior, allowing, at the same time, a great connection with nature. Through the large window one can clearly admire, in several scales, the passage of time, from the hours, to the seasons of the year. Built in steel frame and clad with stones found on the lot, the volume houses a bedroom, a bathroom and a small pantry. It´s covered with metal roofing and has aluminum and glass frames. To warm the interior, wood was used both in the ceiling as in the floor. The idea is, once a writer is in it, he/she is cozy and protected. They have everything they need and are secure enough to get in touch with all of their most inner thoughts, demons and illusions, so it will be easier to bring out ideas.

X-Float is a creation that enhances the fascination of the River Kwai’s floating houses with a different paradigm of design and comfort. The unique accommodation is designed in addition to the Project X2 River Kwai Resort. X-Float’s design resembles a volumetric evolution of a raft, a primitive man-made floating platform, from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional livable unit. This makes X-Float a crossbreed of vernacular and modern architecture. X-Float’s floating units were built offsite and only towed for installation once completed. Situated at the river bend, all units are oriented such that their river views are maximized and such that they are as much as possible shielded from the harsh, tropical afternoon sunlight.
