Student Experience We know that moving from the comfort and familiarity of school to a new college setting is an exciting time but it can also be a little daunting too. Don’t worry, at WCUC we are committed to creating an environment that all students enjoy and thrive in. The majority of our courses are designed around hands-on practical learning, meaning you will put into practice all the skills required for your chosen future career. Alongside this, there are opportunities for enrichment activities, trips and visits, allowing you to extend your learning beyond the classroom. As part of our ‘We Are Ready’ Personal and Social Development programme, learners will be prepared for employment and also learn about communication, reading and writing, mathematics, independent living, skills for the workplace and engaging with the world around them.

Campus Life At WCUC, we are sure we have everything available to ensure your enjoyment and participation in student life extends well beyond the classroom. You may well have free time on campus outside of your timetabled lessons and there are plenty of options to keep you busy. Our Learning Resource Centres are a great place to catch up on your studies, while we also have student common rooms and gyms and there are lots of clubs and societies you can join. You’re free to head off campus and into town but we do offer food and drink options on campus. Our canteens are home to Costa Coffee, while Costa Express machines are also dotted around each campus. Our canteens accept cash, card and Apple and Android Pay. Student Alliance WCUC is home to its own Student Alliance. The Alliance is there to be a channel of transparent communication between WCUC and its students, ensuring the student voice is heard and acted upon. The Alliance is also there to promote, encourage and coordinate campaigns, student clubs, trips, sports, and social activities.

Qualifications & Entry Requirements WCUC offers a wide range of subjects from Entry Level through to University Level. Based on your qualifications, you can enrol on a course at a variety of levels. Enrolment on any course at Level 1 or above requires GCSEs in both English and maths.

If you don’t achieve the required GCSE results to do your course, don’t worry, we will support you to find the right course – this may be the same subject but at a different level or a different subject. If your GCSE grades are better than predicted, we may offer you a course at a higher level. Listed are WCUC’s standard course entry requirements, although some courses may have additional specific qualification entry criteria. Entry Level These courses are designed for a wide range of students and aim to provide support to encourage independence and enable progression onto further study or employment. There are no formal entry requirements but applicants are required to attend an interview and initial assessment. Level 1 These courses are the first step towards a vocational qualification and are designed to help you develop knowledge of a specific job in industry. Usual entry requirements are four GCSEs at Grade 1 or 2 or equivalent experience but entry is determined on an individualised basis and subject to an interview.

12

wiltshire.ac.uk

Level 2 These courses will expand on any existing knowledge or experience gained from your Level 1 course or GCSEs. The courses will include a range of activities and allow you to take responsibility for your own learning. Entry requires four GCSEs at Grade 3 (or equivalent), including English and maths, or successful completion of a relevant subject at Level 1. Level 3 These courses are alternatives to A-Levels and will enable you to develop a broader knowledge of your chosen subject area and prepare you for employment or progression to university level study. The range of activities and level of study is more demanding. Entry requires four GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or equivalent), including English and maths, or Merit or Distinction in a related subject at Level 2. T Levels These new courses are an alternative to A-Levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses. A T Level focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. Entry requires five GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or equivalent), including English, maths and science.

How To Apply 1 – Research our courses and campuses Take your time to explore what courses we offer and check entry criteria and locations. Come to an Open Day to view our facilities and talk to our staff to see why we’re such a great place to learn. 2 – Apply for your course online Once you’ve decided on the course you want to study, apply via our website. Make sure you add your predicted or achieved GCSE grades (or other qualifications) and your parent/guardian details if you’re under 18.

5 – Grades check You will receive information on what to do when you receive your GCSE results. If your GCSE grades are better than predicted, we may offer you a course at a higher level. If your grades were not what you were expecting, there is no need to worry, we will have a conversation with you about your course options. Our Careers Team will be available to provide any additional advice or guidance you may need.

3 – Visit us for a course interview Once we have your application, you will be invited to an interview where you will learn more about your course. If you are unable to attend, please let us know so it can be re-arranged.

6 – Enrolment Over the summer, we will email you to let you know how and when to enrol on your course. You will also receive additional information that you will need before your first day, such as your course start date and time.

4 – Receive your offer of study If your interview has gone well, you will be given an offer for your course, which may be conditional on you achieving the required GCSE grades.

7 – Start your course Everything is in place and you are ready to begin your journey at WCUC. When you arrive on your first day you will be met by your course lecturer and be given your timetable.

What Are

?

T Levels are new post-16 qualifications that WCUC offered for the first time in September 2022. Designed by industry, endorsed by employers – T Levels will help take your future to the next level. They offer a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience through an industry placement. T Level qualifications are the equivalent of three A-Levels and offer invaluable and meaningful work experience, with students spending at least 315 hours (roughly 45 days) in the workplace. Although placements for each course may vary, you will likely spend four days a week in the classroom and one day a week in the workplace. After completing the course, you can go straight into employment, move onto university or start an apprenticeship. To support these courses, we have developed new study areas across our campuses, ensuring you will hone your skills with industry ready equipment. These include the creation of a hospital training ward in Trowbridge and a nursery in Salisbury as well as new science labs and engineering workshops across multiple sites.

14

wiltshire.ac.uk

We are already planning to launch new T Levels in September 2024 in the following sectors: • Accounting • Agriculture • Animal Care • Beauty Therapy • Civil Engineering • Land-based Engineering These go alongside our existing T Levels in: • Business • Digital • Education & Childcare • Engineering & Manufacturing • Health • Science Please see the relevant subject area page for specific course details.

Apprenticeships An apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to gain a recognised qualification whilst getting paid for a job with structured training. At WCUC, we work with around 700 employers and deliver more than 70 different apprenticeships across a wide range of sectors and skill levels. Gaining an apprenticeship is subject to securing relevant qualifications in English and maths. As an apprentice, you will receive a wage and will need to work at least 30 hours per week, which can include studying at WCUC. By undertaking most of your study in the workplace, you will learn alongside experienced industry professionals and build real, transferrable skills of your own. Every apprentice will complete high-quality ‘off-the-job’ training to help them gain the skills and knowledge required for their chosen occupation. Depending on your apprenticeship, you may attend WCUC via day or block release. Our apprenticeship growth has been phenomenal in recent years and shows no signs of slowing down.

Our dedicated Apprenticeship Team, Student Recruitment Consultants and Careers Advisors are available to offer you the support you need to be a successful apprentice, as well as career advice and guidance to match you with appropriate employers. Once you complete your apprenticeship, the next step is up to you. You can progress to the next apprenticeship level, study for additional qualifications, go onto university or work towards a promotion with your employer. Many of our apprenticeships work with industry leading employers in a wide range of roles, including; the NHS, Center Parcs, Wessex Water Services, Babcock, Wiltshire Council, Cross Manufacturing, Mander Duffill and Selwood Housing.

Future Developments At WCUC, we strive to create realistic learning environments and deliver the best possible experience for all of our students across our campuses. As such, we aim to launch regular development projects that will ensure our courses are supported by the most up-to-date facilities, resources and equipment. We currently have a number of schemes either already under way or due to start soon across our campuses that will lead to dynamic new learning spaces. At Salisbury, we are investing £500k to create an innovative healthcare zone to enhance training provision in the sector for young people. New resources will include a healthcare training ward, a mock ambulance training facility, a single-bed observation room, a domestic care room and an associated teaching room. Work on the healthcare project is already under way with a planned completion date of Easter 2024. More than £22million has been invested at Salisbury in recent years, and work to complete the re-cladding of all existing buildings is due to finish by October 2023 and other internal refurbishment work by summer 2024.

Lackham House – the magnificent Georgian manor house that is the central hub of our Lackham campus – is also to undergo a major interior renovation, creating a series of modern learning spaces within a stunning architectural setting. As part of a £2.2million project, Lackham House will become home to a bespoke Agri-Business Centre and feature flexible teaching, conference and breakout spaces as well as innovative VR teaching and simulation rooms. Work is due to commence in early 2024 and be completed that summer.
