COURSE TYPE

COURSE TYPE ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA

FOUNDATION DEGREES

These are intended for adults who do not have A Levels or Level 3 qualifications. The course enables you to prepare for, and gain entry to, degree and other Higher Education programmes. You may have some qualifications already, such as GCSEs or an A Level, but not enough to get into university.

Foundation Degrees (Fd) can offer a more accessible route into university. They are equivalent to the first two years of a degree course and a qualification in their own right. Usually designed with input from employers, these courses ensure that on completion of their foundation degree, learners can make an immediate contribution to their workplace. Students often then choose to top up their qualifications either by joining the third year of a degree or a specifically designed ‘top up’ qualification.

DEGREES

A full degree is a three year full-time study programme and includes research projects in the final year. The title of the degree depends on the subject you choose and the education institution.

A top-up year is normally one year of study at Level 6 which is the final year of a full degree programme.

Higher National Diplomas (HND) are a practical vocationally-focused qualification, usually studied over two years (full-time) or three years (part-time) and like foundation degrees can be converted to a full degree by completion of a final year.

HIGHER/DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS

HNCs

These are a great alternative to university with many now offering training up to degree level. You will receive training both on and off the job, a salary and the opportunity to move your career forward - all without paying hefty tuition fees.

Higher National Certificate (HNC) courses normally take one year full-time or two years part-time and can be used as entrance to the second year of a degree course or more commonly, topped up to an HND with a further year of study.

WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN?

WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN? UCAS TARIFF POINTS

INSURANCE CHOICE

UCAS tariff points are a means of comparing post-16 qualifications used for entry to higher education.

An insurance choice in your application is an offer you accept as your second choice – just in case you don’t meet the conditions of your firm offer.

UCAS EXTRA CLEARING

UCAS Extra is a service you can use to apply for alternative places if you do not hold an offer from your first five choices – it is open from February until the end of June. FIRM CHOICE

A firm choice in your application is an offer you accept as your first choice.

Clearing is another service you can use to look for alternative courses if you didn’t get a place on a course. This could be for many reasons; whether you didn’t receive any offers, you declined your offers or didn’t get the grades you needed, Clearing allows you to apply for courses that still have vacancies. Clearing opens from mid-July.

FEES AND FUNDING SUPPORT

FEES AND FUNDING SUPPORT GOVERNMENT LOANS

Fees vary, but Government tuition fee loans are available to eligible applicants for both full and part-time courses. The fees are paid directly to the College or the university on your behalf every year from the Student Loan Company. Repayments for the loans won’t start until the April after you finish your course providing you are earning over £21,000. The amount you repay each month only depends on how much you earn, not how much you borrowed. For example, a monthly repayment on a salary of £25,000 is £30. Further information on funding Higher Education courses can be found on the website under the Finance section of the University Level pages at: www.wiltshire.ac.uk/unilevel or visit the education section of the Government website at www.direct. gov.uk/studentfinance. Applications for funding can be made from the January before the course starts through the Student Finance England website at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. ACCESS TO LEARNING FUND

This is a hardship fund for all full-time or part-time students and it is used to support students when they are worried that they might not be able to continue their course because of financial concerns. For application forms please contact our HE Admissions team on 01225 756200 or HEAdmissions@ wiltshire.ac.uk. BURSARIES

The College has a non-repayable bursary scheme for full-time and part-time students. The amount can vary and depends on the course and the individual circumstances of the student. Further information can be found on our website: www.wiltshire.ac.uk/ unilevel or if you would like to discuss please contact

74

wiltshire.ac.uk

our HE Admissions team on 01225 756200 or HEAdmissions@vwiltshire.ac.uk. Partner universities also offer bursary schemes and they should be contacted separately. DID YOU KNOW?

You don’t start paying back your student loan until you are earning over £21,000 - if you never earn over this amount, you will never pay it back. A student loan does not affect your credit score. The average graduate starting salary is £25,000 a year. If you haven’t paid off your student loan after 30 years, your student debt is cancelled. Part-time students are also eligible for Government tuition fee loans.
