YOUR GUIDE TO WORK PLACEMENTS HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW…

A STUDENT’S GUIDE TO 50-DAY WORK PLACEMENTS New requirements for students applying to LEVEL 3, YEAR 1 study programmes in the following areas:

AGRICULTURE ANIMAL MANAGEMENT HORSE MANAGEMENT LAND & WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT (COUNTRYSIDE) LAND BASED ENGINEERING BUSINESS COMPUTING & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING SPORT TRAVEL & TOURISM LIFE SCIENCES

From September 2018 you will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills in a real working environment through a compulsory 50-day high quality work placement.

If you are accepted onto your course, part of the condition of your offer will be that you will commit to completing the full programme including the 50-day placement.

You will be expected to complete your 50-day placement on non-college days - this can be flexible such as one or two days per week or block weeks during the holidays.

You will develop highly desirable professional communication skills that employers are seeking, as well as confidence and hands-on industry experience.

We encourage you to try and find a placement you feel comfortable working in - if you find a placement before you enrol, we will help you get everything in place to start your placement as soon as you begin your course.

We will help you find an employer and support you via a dedicated Work Placement Co-ordinator who will work with you during your placement to make sure you are getting the best from the experience and deal with any concerns you may have.

OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE POSITIVE DESTINATION OUTCOMES!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I would like to work for a company but it’s quite a distance to travel, is there any financial help with that? Yes - the College may be able to support you with travel costs. This will be considered on an individual basis, so speak to your Work Placement Co-ordinator before you agree to start the placement. What do I do if I already have a part-time job? The College is making it very clear that it is a compulsory requirement of this course. If your paid part-time job is in an industry directly relating to your course of study, we may be able to consider it towards your 50-day requirement. Contact the Work Experience Manager by email on workexperience@wiltshire.ac.uk who will discuss this with you. I have a disability, what help will there be for me to attend my placement? The College is committed to providing high quality work placement opportunities for all our students. We support students with disabilities, learning difficulties and health related issues to complete placements. We have good relationships with employers, who support our ethos of inclusion and equality. Your Work Placement Co-ordinator will discuss your individual circumstances with you so we can consider the best placement options to meet your needs. I can complete some work placement hours with a company based abroad, will this count? Yes – so long as it is in a relevant industry and we can complete our checks by phone and email, then you can complete your placement anywhere. In fact, we have previously had students complete placements in the USA, Greece, France, Tenerife and Italy!
