MESSAGE FROM OUR MAJOR SPONSOR
“The Festival plays a key role in Salisbury’s culture and is instrumental in bringing together people from different communities and from all walks of life. I’m delighted that it’s back this year and that Wilsons can once again support what promises to be the best Festival yet.”
Stephen Oxley, Partner & Business Development Director
SALISBURY INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL IS BACK!
Welcome to the 2022 Salisbury International Arts Festival. Fascination, fear and love of islands has long fired our collective imagination and this year they will provide the inspiration for our packed Festival programme. We celebrate the distinctive cultures of islands around the world with performances such as The Great Jamaican Songbook with Cleveland Watkiss and with events such as our Panigiri, a celebration of food and music inspired by the Greek island tradition.
isolation, of adventure and of magic and enchantment. As the Festival unfolds, join us on treasure
We are proud to present a number of Wiltshire Creative Productions, made possible by the forming of Wiltshire Creative. These productions are conceived, commissioned and created by us for you, in Wiltshire.
We are especially delighted to welcome back acclaimed violinist Harriet Mackenzie as our Associate Artist. Harriet performs throughout the Festival, including the world première of a new violin concerto from Julian Joseph, especially commissioned by Wiltshire Creative.
Harriet also performs with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra who return to Salisbury Cathedral with a concert celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Over the jubilee weekend we also offer a dynamic programme of free dance, circus and theatre in the streets and spaces of the city for all to enjoy.
After the challenges of the past two years, we are particularly excited to celebrate younger voices through Nightwalks with Teenagers, our collaboration with Canadian theatre company
It’s a full and brilliant programme brought together by our outstanding team of producers and programmers. Events will take place over an extended period in and around Salisbury between 27 May and 18 June. We can’t wait to see you there!

DAILY PROFUNDIS SIMON BUTTERISS
DIGITAL | Listen from home
Online | Tue–Sat throughout the Festival | FREE
Simon Butteriss reads Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis in its entirety in daily episodes of around 20 minutes. While in prison, Wilde wrote his astonishing, book-length love letter to the young man who had destroyed his life. Allowed one piece of paper at a time and no revisions, he nevertheless produced an unfaltering, forensic analysis of their uniquely destructive relationship; part confession, part accusation. Listen in to discover how Wilde survived his long isolation through an unwavering belief in love and the resilience of art. See website for further details.

This exhibition brings together artists who address the political, social or economic conditions of living on islands, and whose work intersects with their activist concerns. The island as a concept has held a particular idealised space in the European imagination, whether utopian or dystopian. Through the work of contemporary islander artists, in particular artists who explore concerns of the Global South, Island Life offers a counterpoint, questioning and expanding the perception of issues such as climate change, artistic solidarity, colonisation and the struggle for identity.
